Garland E. Frost, Sr.
8/24/1914 - 11/29/2004
THE LIFE OF GARLAND FROST
Garland was born
on August 24th, 1914 in New Hampton, Mo. His parents were divorced shortly after his birth and his mother (Essie) moved to Omaha to help support her son who stayed in New Hampton with his Grandmother White. When his mother remarried he joined her in Omaha. They moved to New York City, but after several months decided to return to Omaha. They lived in the Benson area and Garland attended school at Rosehill Elementary (in later years his granddaughters would attend the same school). Then his parents moved to north Omaha and he attended high school at North High (his daughter also went to North for two years and had some of the same teachers he had had). His parents had two more sons, Ralph and Jack. In his last year of high school his stepfather passed away and Garland dropped out of high school to help support his family. In his youth he loved to ice skate in the winter on Fontenelle Park lagoon and in the summer he played horseshoes. He played horseshoes into his adult years on city leagues and won many championships. In later years he loved to bowl and was on several leagues. Fishing was also something he loved to do. Many a weekend was spent fishing and picnicking with family. These events usually included Margaret, his mother, brothers and his children.
He started work with Eastman-Kodak for a while but left there to become a printer. He worked as a printer at the Fontenelle Hotel for over 30 years until they closed. Then he went to work for Douglas printing until he retired.
He met his future wife, Margaret and they were married on November 26th, 1944. It was a small wedding because the government drafted him but when he arrived to Ft. Riley, Kansas, he was notified the war was over and he could return home. Garland and Margaret had a daughter, Judy born
in 1946 and a son, Sonny born
in 1952. Garland spent many hours with his children and doing activities with them. When his daughter was in high school he attended every high school football games. He was also a tried and true Husker football fan. He loved to attend NU football games with his son-in-law, Jerry.
After his retirement Garland and Margaret took several trips with his brother, Ralph to Washington State to visit relatives. But the two of the greatest joys in Garland and Margaret’s life were their granddaughter, Kris and Karen. Garland and Margaret spent many a weekend traveling around Eastern Nebraska for horseshows to watch their two granddaughters show their Arabian horses.
In the past years of his life he took great joy in his flowers and gardening. He loved birds and started building birdhouses and bird feeds and loved giving them to friends and family members. He would also build butterfly houses, tulips, whirly-gigs and many other projects.
On of the saddest times of Garland’s life was the passing of his beloved wife Margaret seven years ago. Until a few months ago and the failing of his health he lived life to the fullest. He will be missed greatly by everyone in his live.
