Lenore Narant of Chadron died May 29 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was 79

Graveside services will be Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Narant was born icon on July 25, 1929 in Chicago, Ill.

Survivors include her cousin Tom and Elaine Meldrum of Boiling Brook, Ill.

A memorial has been established for the Chadron Chapter of the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Dr. Harry Holmberg
Feb. 5, 1917 - May 13, 2009

Dr. Harry Holmberg of Chadron died May 13 at Chadron Community Hospital. He was 92.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at Chamberlain Chapel with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Holmberg was born icon on February 5, 1917 in Chicago, Ill.

Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn Holmberg of Ainsworth.

Dorothy L. Schultz
Aug. 5, 1932-June 7, 2009

Dorothy Louise (Martin) Schultz of Chadron, formerly of Gresham, died Sunday, June 7, at her home in Chadron. She was 75.

Graveside inurnment will be held at a later date at Gordon Cemetery for family friends.

Dorothy was born icon Aug. 5, 1932 in Goshen, Ind. She moved with her family to Gordon in 1944. She graduated from Gordon High School in 1950 then earned a degree in home economics in 1955 from Chadron State College. She began her teaching career at Gresham Public Schools for two years.

She married John Schultz Jr. on August 11, 1956.

Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gordon and Gresham, Member of Merry Mix-up 4_H club, and the Wesley Foundation. She belonged to the Alpha Phi Pi Sorority, Home Economics Club, and was chosen as Blue Key Sweetheart at Chadron State College. Dorothy was a member of Daughter of the Nile, and while teaching at Gresham, she coached volleyball and sponsored pep club.

Dorothy’s loves were her gardens, rose gardens, her family and friends, solving crossword puzzles, and baking Christmas breads for neighbors, family, and teachers.

Her survivors include her husband John Jr. of Chadron; Trudy Winter of Rushville, Tami Mak of Hemingford, Terry and Donna Schultz of Gonzales, La.,; four grandchildren; sisters Phyllis and Troy Green of Gordon, Nancy and Marv Maul of Colorado Springs, Colo., sister-in-law Janet Kee of Humboldt, Tenn. and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Mabel (Weaver) Martin, brother-in-law Jimmy Kee, and James Schultz and several relatives from Indiana.

Memorials may be sent to Chadron Fire Department, Chadron Home Health & Hospice or the donor’s choice in lieu of flowers.

Lloyd A. Softley, Jr
April 28, 1932-May 16, 2009

Lloyd A. Softley, Jr., 77, of Alliance, died May 16, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Cremation is planned and memorial service details are pending.

He was born icon April 28, 1932, to Lloyd and Alice (Kleinschmidt) Softley at Grafton, .

In spite of crippling polio in childhood, Lloyd earned academic honors at Kearney High School and Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney. Lloyd worked in the finance department of an Iowa insurance company following graduate study at the University of Nebraska, and then pursued a career in public accounting. His practice as a CPA took him from Scottsbluff to Ogallala, Kimball and then to Alliance.

After retirement, he was president of NW Nebraska Community Action, served on the Statewide Independent Living Council, was a VITA volunteer tax preparer, participated in the western Nebraska Polio Survivors group, and was active advocate for accessibility and compliance with Federal ADA legislation.

Survivors include son, Steven Softley and wife Vanessa of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Franco Favela of Alliance; eight grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands and one brother.

Marie Abigail McKinnon
June 18, 1919-May 18, 2009

Marie Abigail McKinnon, 89, of Rushville, died Monday, May 18, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born icon June 8, 1919, in Converse County, Wyo., north of Douglas, to Dode and Lottie Muck. As a young girl she moved with her family several times and eventually moved to the rural Gordon Area.

On May 39, 1936, she married Tommy Glenn McKinnon in Gordon. Following their marriage they moved around the country until their daughter was ready to start school and then settled in Gordon.

She worked at several different jobs during their lifetime but her main job as she considered it was to care for her family. She enjoyed attending events in which her grandchildren were involved and in later years frequently traveled to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lived out of the local area.

She was an avid reader and liked to read anything and everything she could get her hands on. She also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her daughter: Glenna Vodica (Edward), of Rushville, half brother: Willis Harris (Carol), of Cozad, sister-in-law: Ethel Muck of Gordon, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, at 7:00 p.m., at Chamberlain Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs.

Services will be on Saturday, May 23, at 10:00 a.m. at the Rushville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Rodney Heilbrun officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville.

Pall bearers will be Brad Vodica, Alisha Vodica, Andrew Niemack, Courtney Niemack, Benjamin Etuk, Gary Muck and Marty Muck.

The family suggests memorials to the Rushville Ambulance Service.

Larry Dean Bertsch
Oct. 23, 1941-May 29, 2009

Larry D. Bertsch died May 29, 2009, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron at the age of 67.

Services will be graveside at the Harrison Cemetery, Tuesday, June 16 at 10 a.m.

Larry was born icon with a rare and serious genetic disorder, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, which largely determined the direction of his life. Although his speech and physical abilities were greatly impaired, he was happy and had an infectious laugh. He could communicate with the staff at Crestview and with family and usually had a smile on his face. He loved to joke with the staff and tease by turning lights off and on.

Larry was born icon October 23, 1941, to Harrison residents, Benjamin Bertsch and Margaret Mendenhall Bertsch. He and his brother Robert (Bobby) Bertsch, also born icon with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, were home-schooled by their mother who had taught school in Sioux County for several years.

Larry was the grandson of Sioux County pioneers Clyde A. and Mina Wurtz Mendenhall.

Survivors include: cousins, Beth Wells Carlson of Ardmore, Okla., Connie Wells Nowlan of Boulder, Colo., Katherine Thompson Tillery of Belleville, Ill., Steve Thompson of Indio, Calif.; and a large extended family, including Lewis Mendenhall of Chadron, Marian Beutler of Hay Springs, Helen Mendenhall of Sacramento, Calif., Mark Mendenhall of North Platte, Jane Mendenhall Smith of Newberg, Ore., Elton Mendenhall of Malcolm, Carolyn Mendenhall Worden of Louisville, Ohio, Ellen Mendenhall Strasburger of Ellsworth, John Strasburger of Lakeside, Myra Strasburger McCullough of Moses Lake, Wash., DeEtta Owens Kerr of Jordan, Mont., Elton Owens of Lewistown, Mont., and Darla Owens Jones of Lewistown, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1953, his brother in 1970, and his mother in 2006.

He lived at Crestview Care Center for over 39 years and, in many ways, the staff at the Crestview was his family. His survivors wish to pay tribute to the staff for the care and companionship given to Larry for those many years.

Although Larry is no longer with us, he lives on through organs and tissue donated for research that will lead to a better understanding of the disease that afflicted him his entire life. Hopefully, this donation will contribute to an eventual cure for Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease.

A memorial has been established for the Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease Foundation. Contributions may be made to The PMD Foundation, 24 Devalinder Drive, Newark, Delaware, 19702.

Shirley M. Kaiser
Aug. 10, 1922-June 2, 2009

Shirley Mae Kaiser went to her eternal rest June 2, 2009 to be reunited with her waiting husband Red. Shirley was born icon August 10, 1922 the daughter of James and Alice (Camp) Moore in North Fond Du Lac, Wisc. Shirley married Harold Kaiser July 23, 1943. They enjoyed fifty-one happy years together living both in Fond du Lac Wisc., and Chadron. Shirley owned a ceramic shop and volunteered at the Chadron Public Library, was a member of Lady Elks and Eastern Star of Chadron.

Shirley was the loving mother of Barbara (Peter) Tadych, Mary Lee (Ron) Fedenko, Dean (Deb) Kaiser. She also leaves to mourn sister in law: Marjorie Kaiser, a brother in law: Robert Bird and numerous nieces and nephews. Survivors also include five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Shirley’s life was held Monday June 8 at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Fond du Lac, Wisc. A private burial will follow at a later date.

Kathleen Hawk Norman

Kathleen Hawk Norman, age 54, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday April 15, 2009.

Kathleen was born icon in Belle Fourche, S. D., and graduated from Edina High School, Edina, Minn. After her graduation the family moved to Chadron, while she stayed behind to attend the University of Minnesota. She spent summers in Chadron attending Chadron State College. She was a 1974 graduate of the University of Minnesota.

Kathleen made New Orleans her adopted hometown and her passion.

A fierce and lifelong advocate against injustice, Kathleen awed everyone who knew her with her tenacity and her tenderness. At age 15, when she was working with a young man who suffered a brain injury, Kathleen took it on her self to plan a fundraiser for people struggling with traumatic brain injuries and stroke. It was a pattern of activism and achievement she followed for the rest of her life.

Kathleen has served as the chairwoman of the board of the Innocence Project of New Orleans since 2004, representing prisoners who were wrongly convicted. She served as a longtime Commissioner of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, a board member of the World Trade Center, ACLU and the International Hospital for Children, and as past president of the Louisiana Motor Transportation Association of Greater New Orleans and the World Trade Club of Greater New Orleans.

Kathleen was an expert in freight logistics and transportation and a railroad fanatic. She owned and operated H.C. Freight Systems with her son, Thrace Barton Norman.

She is survived by her son Thrace, her mother Teresa Hawk of Chadron; seven siblings: Thomas Hawk of Baton Rouge, La; Dennis Hawk and wife Carol of Kansas City, Mo; Jim Hawk of Chadron; Mary Hawk of Lincoln; Patty Hawk and husband Rod Diercks of Crete; Marty Hawk and wife Kerri of Minneapolis, Minn.; J.J. Hawk and wife Kimberly of Austin, Texas; many nieces, nephews and countless friends.

A memorial service celebrating Kathleen’s life and accomplishments will be held at 10 a.m. June 20 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Nebraskans Against the Death Penalty, Terminal Bldg., 941 “O” St., Suite 725, Lincoln, NE 68505 or the Innocence Project of New Orleans in Kathleen’s name. Vivian Ann Boyd
May 22, 1928-June 4, 2009

A memorial service for Vivian Ann Boyd of Chadron was held Saturday, June 6, at Chamberlain Chapel with Dr. Russ Seger officiating, with a reception following at the American Legion Hall. Her remains will be interred with those of her late husband at the National Cemetery of the Pacific (“Punchbowl” in Honolulu.

Mrs. Boyd died June 4, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was 81.

She was born icon May 22, 1928, in Hay Springs to Reuben and Opal (Gibbs) Wood. The family moved to Chadron when she was seven or eight years old. A hard-working young lady, she held employment though most of her teen years and graduated from Chadron College High School in 1947.

She married Cecil Ray Boyd on August 26, 1948, and the couple raised four children together in Chadron. In addition to her roles as a wife, mother, and homemaker, Mrs. Boyd cooked and bartended for a number of local establishments over the years. She was a member of the Elks Club, VFW Auxiliary. She volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs.

Taking great pleasure in her family, she helped plan and organize many reunions. She loved to travel and visited family in Germany and Hawaii, as well as several other locations. She enjoyed walks, puzzles, playing cards, bowling, and spending time with her girlfriends.

Survivors include two sons, Carman of Chadron and Thomas of Perry, Ga.; two daughters, Donna Jinbo of Mililani, Hawaii, and Roxie of San Francisco, Calif.; brother Edgar “Pete” Wood, of St. George, Utah; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother’s Eugene, Clifford, LaVern, and Virgil.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department, with special thanks to the rescue squad.
