Marion L. Lusche

Marion L. Lusche, 74, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, June 20, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2003 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek with Rev. Peter Jark-Swain officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Marion L. Lusche was born icon June 16, 1929 in rural Columbus, Nebraska to Emil & Alvina (Klug) Ahrens. She attended schools in Platte County and graduated from Kramer High School in 1947. On September 4, 1949, Marion married Lawrence Lusche at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek. They lived on the family farm since 1949. Marion was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was also active in the Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Followers of Christ, the Lamplighters Extension Club, and the Birthday Club. Marion enjoyed cooking, playing cards, visiting with her friends, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Esther P. Wurdeman

Esther P. Wurdeman, 94, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the Beverly Healthcare in Columbus. Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus on Friday, March 07, 2003 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Leigh, Nebraska at 1:30 PM on Friday. Visitations will be held at the Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Friday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Esther P. Wurdeman was born icon October 27, 1908 in Leigh, Nebraska to Wilhelm and Anna (Loseke) Hespe. She graduated from Leigh High School in 1927 and attended State Teacher's College in Wayne, Nebraska. She taught in Genoa for 2 years. She worked in the Rynearson bakery in Leigh until she married. She married Elmer Wurdeman, July 16, 1935 at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh, the same church where she was baptized and confirmed.
After her marriage, she worked for 15 years in her father's hardware and furniture store, Hespe Hardware in Leigh. She also worked and co-owned B&W Manufacturing, Co. of Columbus, a family owned business, since 1958.
She resided in Leigh all her married life, moving to Columbus in 1982. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh and currently a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. During her life she was active in Walther League, Sewing Circle, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Zion choir in Leigh. In Columbus, she was an active volunteer of the Columbus Hospital Auxiliary.

Irene Schupbach

Irene Schupbach, 90, of Columbus died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Sabetha Hospital in Sabetha, Kansas.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus with Rev. Nancy Peebles officiating. Interment will in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service Thursday, 10:15 AM at the church.

Irene Schupbach was born icon December 28, 1912 in Columbus, Nebraska to Fred and Margaret (Herchenhan) Staub. She graduated from Kramer High School. Irene married Edward C. Schupbach on November 8, 1937, they farmed west of Duncan for many years. She lived in Platte County until December of 2002, when she moved to Sabetha, Kansas. Irene was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a member of the Women's Fellowship and a circle at the church. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the Wil-Es-Loran Card Club for 60 years. Irene enjoyed knitting and spending time with her family

E. H. "Bud" Oppliger

E. H. "Bud" Oppliger, 77, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 18, 2001, at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 21, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus with Rev. Mike Neely officiating. A private family interment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 21, 2001, from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church.

E. H. "Bud" Oppliger was born icon February 4, 1924 in Polk County, Nebraska to Ernest and Louise (Winkelman) Oppliger. Bud attended school in Polk County and also went to Kramer High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on January 17, 1945. He served in the Philippines and earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on November 27, 1946. On November 26, 1955, Bud married Winnie Olson in Columbus, Nebraska. They lived South of Columbus in Polk County where Bud enjoyed being outdoors and hunting, especially duck and deer hunting. Bud was also known for raising his "Oppliger Melons". For the last 12 years, Bud and Winnie would spend their winters in Texas. Bud was a member of Highland Park Evangelical Free Church.

Robert E. Olson

Robert E. Olson, 76, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, January 18, 2001 at the Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. Services are Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at the funeral home and from 9:30 until service time Wednesday at the church. There will be a Masonic Service on Tuesday at 7:30 PM at the funeral home.

Robert E. (Bob) Olson was born icon September 24, 1924 in Omaha, NE to William E. & Bessie Pilcher Olson. He graduated from Omaha Tech. High School and entered the U. S. Army in March of 1943. He served in the Philippines and Okinawa in the infantry and was wounded on May 5, 1945. He was discharged January 5, 1946, receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and other medals of that operation. He attended Omaha University and married Gloria M. Kuppig on September 4, 1948. Bob was employed by Mutual of Omaha while attending school, and then worked for Planters Peanut Co. from 1948-1959. In 1959 he purchased Hadley Braithwait with Don Kiser where he worked until his retirement. He was also co-owner of K.O. Vending Co. since 1964. Bob was a member of the Great Plains Candy & Tobacco Assoc. from 1945-1959 & served as Secretary/Treasurer from 1952-1959. He was president of the following groups: North Park PTA (1963), NE Tobacco Wholesalers (1965-1966), Columbus Chamber of Commerce (1968-1969), Platte County Ag. Soc. Board of Managers (1983) & served on their Board of Directors from 1978-1984, Platte College Foundation (1984-1986) & served on their Board from 1976-1987. Bob was Trustee for the Elks Lodge from 1966-1973 and was Exalted Ruler in 1971. He was also involved in the following organizations: Charter member of the Pawnee Shrine Motor Corp. since 1964, Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite, Sesostris Shrine Temple, Pawnee Jolly Wagon, Rotary Club where he serve as Board of Directors for 3 years, American Legion, V.F.W., Touchdown Club, Rebound Club, and was an Elder for the Federated Church. Bob was elected Board of Directors for Equitable Savings & Loan Assoc. from 1971-1990. Bob also received the following awards: Paul Harris Fellowship Award (1989), Good Citizenship Award (1990), and was inducted into the Platte County Ag. Soc. Hall of Fame in 2000.

IRENE C. OLESON

Irene C. Oleson, 88, formerly of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, September 18, 2000 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Columbus, NE on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Richard Bringewatt and the Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be at the Iowa Valley Cemetery 12 miles west of Madison, NE at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday. Visitation will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church Columbus, NE on Thursday, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM.
Irene C. Oleson, 88, was born icon September 4, 1912 in rural Lindsay, Nebraska to Herman and Clara (Scheer) Nathan. She attended grade school in Lindsay. On May 14, 1931, she married Lyle W. Oleson in Lindsay. Together they farmed in the Madison area for many years. They later moved to Norfolk and 1954 moved to Belflower, CA. In 1974 they moved back to Columbus.
While living in Norfolk, Irene worked for Omaha Cold Storage. In Belflower, Irene worked as a baker. Upon returning to Columbus, Irene baked pies for Godfathers Pizza. She loved to play cards, cook, travel and visit with friends. Memorials are suggest to the American Cancer Society for research.
