Lawrence E. Trofholz

Lawrence E. Trofholz, 79, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, October 7, 2002 at his home.

Services are Friday, October 11, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Michael Klatt and Rev. Ernest Smith officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM at the church.

Lawrence E. Trofholz was born icon January 25, 1923 in Columbus, Nebraska to Edward and Bertha (Ingold) Trofholz Sr. He attended Columbus schools and graduated in 1941 from Kramer High School. After graduation he worked for Council Oak grocery store in Columbus. On January 15, 1943, Lawrence entered the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945.
Upon returning from the service, Lawrence went back to work at the grocery store. Shortly after that, Lawrence went to work for the natural gas company. He retired from there after 31 years of service as a service man. He married Geraldine (Gerry) Welch on September 1, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus.
Lawrence was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, bowling and playing softball.

Memorials may be directed to family choice.

Alice Schulz

Alice Laura Loseke Schulz, 90, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, November 3, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at 1:30 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Revs. Roland A. Jank and Andrew Alberts officiating. Interment will be at the Christ Lutheran Cemetery in rural Columbus. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Wednesday from 12:30 -1:30 P.M. at the church, with a family prayer service at 1:15 P.M.

Alice Schulz was born icon on April 8, 1912 in rural Platte County, Nebraska to Herman and Minna K. (Hespe) Loseke. She attended Christ Lutheran School and was a graduate of Columbus High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society. Before retirement she worked as a bookkeeper at Anderson Floral Company in Columbus. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed traveling and gardening.

Norman L. Thompson

Norman L. Thompson, 68, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare Center in Columbus.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2002, 11:00 A.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus on Saturday at 10:15 A.M. with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post # 84. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Thompson was born icon January 28, 1934 to James & Ferne (Lance) Thompson at Mount Ayr, Iowa. He was a ROTC member in high school and enlisted in the Navy on September 4, 1951. He served as a corpsman at Atsugi, Japan and the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, California. After his discharge on January 27, 1955, he returned to Mount Ayr, Iowa and married Blondena Kirby. They and their son, Greg, moved to California in 1957. He finished his schooling and attended college. In 1966 he received a BA degree from San Fernando Valley State College. He then was a programmer on computers which operated the simulator capsule for astronauts in training. He met some of the early astronauts there and later at U.S.A.F. Aerospace Research Pilot School in Houston, TX. On December 11, 1977 he suffered second and third degree burns over 30% of his body rescuing a woman and her son from a burning apartment. In 1986 he moved to Bailey, Colorado, near Denver, and worked as a computer teacher. He married Nancy Brown at that time. In July 1989 he moved to Columbus, Nebraska and was employed by Nebraska Public Power District in the Information Services Department. On October 22, 1996 he married LaVonne Stone. He was a member of the American Legion, Post # 0144 in Genoa, NE and the Flatland HOG Chapter in Columbus, NE. His hobbies were gardening, woodworking, and riding his Harley.

Max M. Staley, Jr.

Max M. Staley, Jr., 51, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, June 10, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Columbus, NE on Thursday, June 13, 2002 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at First United Methodist Church on Thursday, from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM with a family prayer service at 9:45 AM

Max M. Staley, Jr. was born icon July 19, 1950 in Wichita, Kansas to Max & Virginia (Smith) Staley, Sr. Max attended and graduated from High School in Belle Plaine, Kansas and then attended Wichita State University. In 1981 he moved to Columbus, Nebraska and on September 12, 1981 he married Brenda Nickels in Columbus. Max worked as a machinist at Fleischer Manufacturing for 8 years. Max enjoyed going duck hunting, bowling, and working on his cars.

Lillian Wennekamp

Lillian Wennekamp, 66, of Humphrey, Nebraska died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at her daughters home in Humphrey. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Fr. James Buckley officiating. Interment will follow at St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery, Columbus, Nebraska. There will be a memorial mass at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church at a later date. There is no visitation.

Lillian Wennekamp was born icon in Columbus, Nebraska on April 18, 1936 to Harold and Sophie (Pachunka) Miller. She graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in 1954. On July 20, 1955 she married Eugene Wennekamp at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. The family lived in a variety of midwest towns and states including Brainard, MN; St. Paul, MN; Jamestown, ND; Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Eugene passed away in 1975 and Lillian moved back to Columbus. Lillian worked at several local business including Becton Dickinson and Behlens. She enjoyed playing cards, shopping, knitting, dancing and polka music. Above all Lillian enjoyed visiting with family and friends. In 2001 Lillian was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She primarily spent her final year at her daughters home in Humphrey.

Jaqueline M. Schmid

Jaqueline M. Schmid, 68, of Monroe, Nebraska, died Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, Nebraska. Services will be held at the Monroe United Methodist Church, Monroe, NE on Friday, January 25, 2002 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, January 24, 2002 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at the Monroe United Methodist Church on Friday, January 25, 2002 from 9:00 AM until service time.
Jackie Schmid was born icon August 30, 1933 in Clarks, Nebraska to Clyde and Mildred (Britten) Mustard. She graduated from Clarks High School in 1951. She then attended St. Catherine's School of Nursing in Omaha and graduated from there in 1954. On April 3, 1955, Jackie and Paul Schmid were united in marriage at the Congregational Church in Clarks.
She worked at the old St. Mary's Hospital in Columbus from 1954 until it merged with the Behlen Hospital. She retired from nursing in 1989. For several years she worked under Dr. Bruce Cowgill at the ESU #7 unit as a traveling school nurse.
She was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, and the Monroe American Legion Auxiliary. She had been active as a Cub Scout leader and a Brownie Scout leader. She loved knitting, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, reading and spending time with her family. She gave elderly people home care. She helped take care of her granddaughter after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Martin Wennekamp

Martin Wennekamp, 84, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus. Services are Friday, February 22, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Richard Bringewatt and Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be Friday, February 22, 2002 at 1:30 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Leigh, Nebraska. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2002 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home and on Friday, February 22, 2002 from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Martin Wennekamp was born icon February 20, 1917 in Creston, Nebraska to George and Frieda (Wendt) Wennekamp. He attended schools in Platte County. Martin married Elsie (Korte) Sieh on June 1, 1963 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He was a farmer and livestock feeder in the Bismark township. Martin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served on various boards and sang in the choir for many years. He also sang in the Columbus Apollo Club. He served as a Platte County Supervisor from 1982 to 1994. Martin was board member of Consumers Co-op of Columbus and also of the Platte County Feeders Association. He as a committee member of the Platte County Farmers Home Administration. Martin was a member of the Lutheran Layman's League.
