Alma M. Semmler, 86, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus, Nebraska.

Services are Friday, September 21, 2001 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, September 20, 2001 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, September 21, 2001 from 9:30 AM until service time. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Alma M. Semmler was born icon January 10, 1915 at Armour, South Dakota to Carl and Christina (Drefs) Grosz. She married Jonathan Semmler on March 22, 1936 at Armour, South Dakota, they moved to Columbus in 1958. Alma worked at Jackson Cleaners and at St. Mary's Hospital and Columbus Hospital in the housekeeping departments, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Alma adored her children and grandchildren.

Ralph H. Schmidt

Ralph H. Schmidt, 84 of Norfolk, Nebraska, formerly of Monroe, Nebraska died Monday, October 29, 2001 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska. Services will be held at Monroe United Methodist Church, Monroe, Nebraska on Thursday, November 01, 2001 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Bev Minor officiating. Interment will be at the Okay Cemetery north of Monroe. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Monroe United Methodist Church on Thursday, November 1, 2001 from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM, Thursday at the church.
Ralph was born icon January 31, 1917 north of Monroe, Nebraska to Nicholas & Emma (Janssen) Schmidt. He was baptized on March 25, 1917 at Zion Lutheran Church in Platte Center, Nebraska. He attended Wattsville School. He was a member of Wattsville church before it closed and moved to Monroe. On July 3, 1939, he married Esma Truelove in Monroe. Ralph worked on the construction of the Monroe and the Brady, Nebraska Powerhouse's. He and Esma lived in Brady for 1.5 years before moving back to Monroe.
Ralph joined the US Army on February 19, 1943 and was honorably discharged on November 5, 1945. He was a PFC in the 110 Medical Battalion. He received 5 campaign ribbons: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.
After returning from the service, Ralph worked at the Monroe Elevator, D.H. Ziegler for 9 years and for 28 years for the Monroe Powerhouse. He was a member of the Monroe Fire Department for 20 years and had served on the Monroe Town Board. He was a charter member of the American Legion, Swanson Post 322 of Monroe for 56 years, a lifetime member of the VFW in Columbus and attended the Monroe Methodist Church.
He was a great fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He also loved to go hunting and fishing. For the past five years, Ralph lived at "The Meadows" in Norfolk and enjoyed his family and friends.

Melva Thavenet

Melva Thavenet, 83, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services are Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in St. Edward, Nebraska at 1:30 PM on Saturday. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 12, 2001 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday, October 13, 2001 from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service 10:15 AM Saturday at the church.

Melva Thavenet was born icon January 17, 1918 in rural Primrose, Nebraska to William Harvey and Hallie Irene (Ayers) Johnson. She was the youngest of four children. Melva attended the "Red School House" in Boone County. She married Russell Thavenet on April 7, 1949 in Columbus, Nebraska. They lived in Boone, Nebraska for seven years, then moved to Columbus, where Melva worked at the J.C. Penney store. They then moved to Fremont, Nebraska, where Melva worked for 23 years at the Campbell Soup Co., she retired in 1980. Russell and Melva have lived in Columbus since 1980. Melva was a member of the First United Methodist Church and loved animals.

Luella Urish

Luella Urish, 71, of Columbus died Thursday, October 25, 2001 at the Tabitha Health Care Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. The funeral service will be Monday, October 29, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 28, 2001 from 2:00 - 5:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 10:15 A.M. at the church.

Luella A. Urish was born icon June 25, 1930 in Wausa, Nebraska to Carl and Millie (Coulter) Strivens. Luella graduated from Hartington High School. On July 29, 1951, Luella married John E. Urish in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. In 1952 they moved to Columbus and Luella went to work for Becton-Dickinson. She retired as an inspector after 38 years of service. Luella enjoyed helping at Trinity Lutheran Church and spending time traveling.

Bonnie Sandahl (Mrs. Carl), 83, of Bloomsburg, PA, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday, October 7, 2001 at her home in Bloomsburg. Services are at the David Brady Funeral Home in Danville, PA on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Edmund Minnich officiating. Interment will be at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Danville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2001 from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Bonnie was born icon September 7, 1918 in Wayne County, NE to Jens and Mabel (Anderson) Christensen. She married Carl Sandahl and they formerly resided in Columbus, NE. She was a homemaker and she especially enjoyed gardening.

Helen C. Skorupa, 88, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, November 4, 2001 at Morys Haven in Columbus.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 9, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church with Father Tom Weisbecker officiating. Interment will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 8, 2001 from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M., with a vigil service at 7:00 P.M., and on Friday from 9:00 - 10:15 A.M. all at Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Helen C. Skorupa was born icon January 1, 1913 in Richland , Nebraska to Joseph & Anna (Wielgus) Sturek. She attended schools in Colfax and Platte Counties. On May 2, 1932, she married Dennis Sokol in Columbus. Dennis passed away on July 28, 1947. Helen then married Edward Skorupa on June 4, 1966 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. They lived in Scottsbluff until 1976 when they moved back to Columbus. Helen worked at Jordans Bakery, Anderson Floral Company, Froemel's Jewelry, and First National Bank and Trust Company. Helen enjoyed gardening, doing crossword puzzles, and baking pies. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Ladies Guild, and Catholic Daughters of America.

Clifford V. Jensen

Clifford V. Jensen, 92, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, September 20, 2002 at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Columbus on Monday, September 23, 2002 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at the St. Ansgar Lutheran Cemetery, Rosenborg in rural Lindsay, Nebraska at 1:00 PM on Monday. Visitation will be held at the Gass Haney Funeral Home on Sunday, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM on Monday at the church.

Mr. Jensen was born icon in Lindsay, Nebraska on November 2, 1909 to Chris and Anna (Paulsen) Jensen. They sold their farm located south and west of Lindsay the same year and on March 1, 1910 moved to a farm south and west of Newman Grove, Nebraska, in the community known as Rosenborg, Nebraska. Clifford lived on this farm for 72 years. Clifford attended school at Dist. 27 and Dist. 40 Platte County. He graduated from St. Edward High School. After graduation he farmed and raised pure bred livestock.
He married Evelyn Christensen on April 17, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, Nebraska. For 50 years he sold Purebred China hogs in Nebraska and bordering states. He was an officer and member of the Purebred Breeder's Association for many years.
He was active in his church at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, Rosenborg; Trinity Lutheran Church in Newman Grove and Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus where he was a member since 1982 after retiring from the farm and moving to Columbus. Clifford was a 4-H leader and also took part in numerous civic organizations. He loved gardening and raising roses.
