Leon A. Went, 39, of Columbus, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska .

Services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Leigh, Nebraska, on Friday, April 13, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Kristi Rockswold officiating. Interment will be at Leigh City Cemetery in Leigh, Nebraska.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, April 12, 2001 from 3:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Leigh, on Friday, April 13, 2001 from 9:30 A.M. until service time.

Leon A. Went was born icon January 15, 1962 in Columbus, Nebraska to Arlyn and Bernice (Hansen) Went. He grew up on a farm near Leigh, Nebraska. Leon graduated from Leigh High School in 1980 and was a self-employed truck driver.

Ronald O. Switzer

Ronald O. Switzer, 79, of Columbus, Nebraska, died December 15, 2001 at his home. Private family services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery on Monday, December 17, 2001 with Rev. Gary Main officiating. There will be no visitation.

Ronald was born icon December 10, 1922 in Clearwater, Nebraska to Amos and Iva (Babcock) Switzer. He graduated from Clearwater High School. He served in the US Navy from 1941 to 1945. He married Agnes Rothleutner on January 10, 1941 in Center, Nebraska. They moved to Columbus in 1954 where he worked as a technician for the General Telephone Company.

Charles 'Chuck' Nash Stinson

Charles 'Chuck' Nash Stinson, 79, of Columbus, NE, died Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at 10:30 A.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Visitation will be from 8:30 A.M. until service time on Wednesday, November 29, 2000.

Charles N. "Chuck" Stinson, 79, was born icon on September 13, 1921, in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Charles A. and Frances M. (Slivka) Stinson. In his early years, Chuck endured three tragic events as his mother, father, and sister were killed in separate accidents before he was twelve years old. In 1933, Chuck moved to Idaho to be raised by an aunt.
In 1939, he graduated as the salutatorian of his Nampa, Idaho, high school class, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the battleship Idaho and was fortunate to have his ship leave Pearl Harbor four days before the Japanese attacked.
Chuck was very interested in flying and was able to become a naval aviator. From 1943 to 1946, he was a naval flight instructor at Pensacola, Florida.
On February 28, 1944, in Frederick, Maryland, Chuck married a girl, Christine "Tina" Dadds, that he had met while stationed at Annapolis, Maryland. This marriage lasted for fifty-three years until the death of Tina in 1997.
After the war, Chuck enrolled at Iowa State University to study electrical engineering. After completing three years of studies, he decided to take an offer to be a flight instructor and manager at the Columbus, Nebraska , airport.
In 1953, Chuck became the company pilot for Dale Products and he also worked in the engineering department. 1957 saw Chuck moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be the plant manager of a new Dale factory. Returning to Columbus in 1961, Chuck became the Division Director of the Wirewound division of Dale. In the next twenty-four years in Columbus, he was promoted several times and eventually became a Senior Vice President of Dale Electronics with responsibility for factories in Columbus & York, Nebraska, Juarez, Mexico and Kaufbeuren, Germany. Altogether these plants employed more than 1000 people.
Chuck retired from Dale in 1985. His retirement years were spent visiting the children and being with his beloved wife. Chuck was also an avid golfer and Husker football fan.
Chuck was a positive, caring individual. He touched many people and unknowingly, was a role model for numerous people at Dale Electronics and in the community. Having been a wonderful husband, father, and granddad, Chuck will be dearly missed.

Gerald Clem Sliva

Gerald Clem Sliva, 59, of Platte Center, Nebraska, died November 21, 2000 at his daughters home in Mukilteo, Washington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Platte Center, Nebraska, on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 10:30 AM with Father Rodney Kneifl officiating. Interment will be at the St. Joseph-St. Patrick Cemetery in rural Platte Center.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM and after 6:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Vigil Service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2000 at 7:30 P.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Gerald C. Sliva, 59, was born icon September 6, 1941 in Genoa, Nebraska to Clement and Frances (Vetick) Sliva. He graduated from Platte Center High School, Platte Center, Nebraska. He married Maxine Foltz on May 29, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center. On July 21, 1960 he entered the Marines and was honorably discharged on July 20, 1964. For 18 years he worked in the maintenance department at Camaco, in Columbus, Nebraska.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center. He loved hunting and fishing and the out doors. He especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren, bike riding, fishing, and playing games with them.

Thomas G. Sumner

Thomas G. Sumner, 53, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, December 11, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Monday, December 10, 2001 from 3:00 -8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 from 9:30-10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.

Thomas G. "Tom" Sumner was born icon December 26, 1947 in North Bend, Nebraska to LeRoy & Ardith (Stubbert) Sumner. Tom attended grade school in Rogers, Nebraska and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1966. On April 13, 1968, Tom married Kathy Bock in Bellwood, Nebraska. They lived in Columbus since they were married where Tom worked as a welder. He was employed by Columbus Hydraulics and then by Behlen Manufacturing. He was a past member of the Auxiliary Police Force and enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and fishing.

Barbara Jean Wurdeman

Barbara J. Wurdeman, 72, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, February 26, 2001 at Columbus Community Hospital.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be at Columbus Cemetery.

Barbara was born icon on October 26, 1928 in Columbus, Nebraska to Edward and Lorene (Bruns) Allison. She attended grade school and Kramer High School in Columbus. She married Lester Wurdeman on August 1, 1964 in Columbus.

Harold Edward Schwarz

Harold Edward Schwarz, 96, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at Countryside Home in Madison, Nebraska. Services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, on Friday, July 13, 2001 at 10:00 AM with Rev. John E. Nelson, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 12, 2001 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM and at Christ Lutheran Church on Friday, July 13, 2001 from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM.

Harold was born icon September 8, 1904 in Humphrey, Nebraska to Fred and Lena (Friedrich) Schwarz. He was baptized on October 16, 1904 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humphrey. He attended rural district grade school and Trinity Lutheran parochial school in Madison, Nebraska. He confirmed his Christian faith on April 1, 1917 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. After school, Harold worked on the family farm. He married Lorna Loseke on June 4, 1938 in Parker, South Dakota. Together they farmed in the Humphrey area from 1938 to 1946. They then purchased a farm north of Columbus where they raised grain and livestock. They farmed there until 1968 when they moved to Columbus. He worked at Wilke Landscape Center in Columbus from 1970 to 1981. He was a member of various farm coop's.

Harold was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in rural Platte County where he had previously served as an usher and a trustee. Harold was one of three from Christ Lutheran that planted the blue spruce trees along the property line on the north side of the church and the teachers home. He enjoyed playing cards, manicuring his lawn, reading, traveling, listening to music and doing craft work.

He was loyal to his wife, his children, his brothers and sisters, to his country and to everyone for whom he ever worked. He liked to work - it was a way of service and a form of stewardship. Modest in dress and modest in the way he set out to get a job done. His affection for his children and grandchildren was surpassed only by his affection for his wife.
