ALFRED MILTON GOSSMAN JR.

Alfred Milton Gossman Jr., 62, of Columbus, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, in rural Platte County.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. John Hellwege officiating. Burial is at Columbus Cemetery in Columbus.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service.

Mr. Gossman was born icon Jan. 18, 1938 in Columbus to Alfred and Frieda (Rohweder) Gossman Sr. He attended District 12 grade school. On June 19, 1960, he married Marian Goedeken in Columbus. He was in the U.S. Army Reserves from April 9, 1961 to October 8, 1961.

He was a life long resident of Platte County and farmed the land that had been in his family since 1925. He raised beef cattle, hogs and corn. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Platte Center, where he had served as an elder. He helped organize the building of Lakeview High School. He enjoyed traveling, landscaping, working in his yard and farming.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Cynthia (Jim) Gonka and Tammy (Steven) Sliva, all of Columbus and Janet (Dale) Jaixen of Platte Center; one son, Gary of Columbus; four sisters, Helen (Rudy) Scholz of Wahoo, Dorothy (Melvin) Schmid and Isabelle (Gunnar) Claussen, all of Columbus, and Jeanette (Lawrence) Schmid of Bellwood; one brother, Howard (Evelyn) of Lansing, Ill.; and nine grandchildren - Amber Gonka, Miranda Gonka, Justin Gonka, Thomas Jaixen, Carrie Jaixen, Lindsey Jaixen, Mandy Jaixen, Kelsey Sliva and Nathan Sliva.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Larry L.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church in Platte Center or donors’ choice.

EDNA R. HUSMANN

Edna, 85, of Columbus, died Monday, June 05, 2000 at Columbus Manor in Columbus, Nebraska. Services will be held at Creston Baptist Church, Creston, Nebraska, on Thursday, June 08, 2000 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Eric Heisel officiating. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Creston.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Creston Baptist Church on Thursday, from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM.
Edna R. (Moser) Husmann was born icon October 19, 1914 in Hudson, Colorado to Christian and Eva (Ginther) Moser. She lived on a farm near Hudson and attended school at North Wentz, Colorado. Edna married Herbert A. Husmann on October 1, 1952 in Greeley, Colorado, they moved to a farm near Creston, Nebraska in 1952, then moved to Columbus in 1988. She was a member of the Creston Baptist Church and the Dorcas Society. Edna enjoyed gardening and sewing.

E. FERNE KATHKA

E. Ferne Kathka, 82, of Sun City, Arizona, died Thursday, June 22, 2000 at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Columbus, NE on Friday, July 14, 2000 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2000 from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM.

E. Ferne Kathka was born icon September 15, 1917 in Ipswich, South Dakota to Leslie and Laura (Jones) Wilcox. She attended schools in Ipswich and graduated in 1935. Ferne attended Grand Island School of Business. She married Arlin A. Kathka on June 14, 1938 at Ipswich, South Dakota. She worked at the First United Methodist Church as a secretary and education assistant for 12 years, until retirement. Arlin and Ferne moved to Sun City, Arizona in 1998. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sun City, the United Methodist Women and Wesleyan Service Guild and the First United Methodist Church Keystone Group in Columbus.

Ferne is survived by her husband Arlin Kathka of Sun City, AZ, sons, David of Rock Springs, WY, and Timothy of Littleton, CO, 5 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.

Ferne was preceded in death by her parents and son Michael.

PAUL J. KUMMER

Paul J. Kummer, 72, died May 25, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services are Tuesday, May 30, 2000 at 2:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, Nebraska with the Rev. Tim White officiating. Burial will follow at the Gruetli Cemetery, southeast of Monroe, Nebraska. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Monday, May 29, 2000 at the funeral home and from 1:30 PM until service time Tuesday at the church. A family prayer service will be held on Tuesday at 1:15 PM at the church.
Paul J. Kummer, was born icon in rural Platte County (the Gruetli community) to Albert and Louisa (Schneider) Kummer on January 8, 1928. He attended District #37 school and graduated from Monroe High School. He married Esther Benning on September 19, 1951 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek.
A life long resident of Platte County, Paul was a grain and beef farmer, where the farm has been in the family for over 100 years. Paul was active in many groups and organizations and had served on many boards and committees including the following: District #73 School Board, Board Member of G & T, Cornhusker Public Power, Platte County Agricultural Society, Platte County Feeders, Platte County Extension Board, NRA, Platte County Weed District and was a substitute Postal Carrier. Paul served nine years with the National Guard. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as an usher for many years. Paul was also sexton for the Gruetli Cemetery. Paul enjoyed reading, loved farming and especially loved his family. Memorials may be made to the donors choice.

James L. Kaspar

James L. Kaspar, 59, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 19, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus. Services will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 22, 2000 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus on Friday, November 24, 2000. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM .

James L. Kaspar, 59, was born icon on October 31, 1941 in Columbus, Nebraska to Otto Lewis and Henrietta Irene (Kroeger) Kaspar. He attended school in Columbus. He served in the US Navy from June 16, 1959 to December 21, 1961. He traveled the country for many years. He later attended a trade school and learned about auto body work. He returned to Columbus in 1982 and opened O.J.'s Body Repair and Paint Shop. On June 20, 1987 he married Barbara Branstetter. He later owned and operated the Bobber Shop for eight years. Memorials may be directed to the families choice.

VERONA HASSEBROOK

Verona B. Hassebrook, 83, of Platte Center, Nebraska, died November 8, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, Nebraska. Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie, rural Platte Center, Nebraska, on Saturday, November 11, 2000 at 10:00 AM with the Rev.'s Scott & Charlotte Anderson officiating. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Grand Prairie Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie on Saturday, from 9:00 AM until service time.

Verona B. Hassebrook, 83, of Platte Center, Nebraska, was born icon January 29, 1917 to Fred and Emma (Bitter) Husmann in rural Leigh, Nebraska. Because of the farming economy, the family moved to Madison, South Dakota, where Verona graduated from high school. She went on to become a school teacher. She taught for many years back in Platte County, Nebraska at Districts #22, #28 and #84.
As a young teacher in Nebraska, she was housed by one of the local families. One of the families that she lived with was that of John & Mary Hassebrook, parents of Johnny Hassebrook, whom on May 27, 1938, Verona married in Madison, South Dakota. She continued teaching after her marriage and helped her husband on the farm. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie, rural Platte Center, Nebraska where she belonged to the Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Nebraska Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Dr. Harold H. Koch

Dr. Harold H. Koch , 78, of Columbus, NE died Sunday, May 19, 2002 at Bryan LGH Hospital - East in Lincoln, NE.
Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Columbus NE on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Richard Bringewatt officiating. Interment will be on Thursday, May 23, 2002, 1:00 PM at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE with military honors by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM with a wake service at 7:30 PM and at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Wednesday, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM with a family prayer service at 10:45 AM.

Dr. Harold H. Koch was born icon October 26, 1923 in Hanover, Kansas to Henry & Frieda (Walker) Koch. He graduated from Hanover High School in 1941. He taught country school at Farmers Country School in Washington, County, KS. Harold also played in the Ban Johnson Baseball League in Marysville, KS. Harold entered the U. S. Army on February 26, 1943. He served in the Italian Campaign and also in Northern Africa and in Italy. He was a German prisoner of war on Anzio Beach in 1944. He escaped after a short time in captivity. Harold received the EAME Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945. On August 27, 1950 he married Delores Niemeier at the Hermansburg Lutheran Church in Bremen, Kansas. He graduated from Midland Lutheran College in 1953. In 1956 he received his M.S. Degree from Omaha University and his Ed. D. Degree from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964. Harold spent his entire life in education. He taught math and science at North Bend, NE, where he was also the Principal. He then served as superintendent at the schools in Scribner, Crawford, and Gering, NE . He went to Chadron State College, Chadron, NE where he was Director of Student Teaching, Chairman of the Division of Education & Psychology, and also Dean of the School of Education & Physical Ed. He was a County Superintendent of Schools and Personnel Director, Scotts Bluff County. Harold was a member of the NE Assoc. of School Administrators, NE Council of School Administrators, NE School Masters Club, Phi Delta Kappa, Blue Key, and the NE State Education Association. Harold earned the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teacher Education Program - American Assoc. of Colleges for Teacher Education, Outstanding Leadership Award - NE Association of School Administrators, Distinguished Service Award - NE School Masters Club, and the Presidents Award for Distinguished Leadership in County Government - NE Association of County Officials. In 1997 Harold was also inducted as an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy.

Arnold H. "Buck" Fuehring

Arnold H. Fuehring, 92, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, September 15, 2001 at the Prairie Village Retirement Center in Columbus.

Services will be Tuesday, September 18, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Monday, September 17, 2001, from 3:00 - 6:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Tuesday, September 18, 2001, from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.

Arnold H. Fuehring was born icon September 22, 1908 in Seward, Nebraska to Fredrick & Anna (Rogge) Fuehring. Arnold was raised by his mother and step-father, John Gembler, and attended school in Tomora, Nebraska. He married Lydia Thaut on October 4, 1930 in Hastings, Nebraska. They lived in Hastings until 1948 when they moved to Columbus where he went to work for Loup Public Power District. He later went to work for Nebraska Public Power District for he was a Lineman Foreman and worked for 25 years before retiring in 1973. Arnold enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially traveling after his retirement.
