Hulda L. Barr, 78, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, on Monday, December 16, 2002 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Timothy White officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at the Gass Haney Funeral Home on Sunday, December 15, 2002 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Hulda was born icon March 24, 1924 in rural Platte County, Nebraska to Gottifred J. and Eleanor (Lindemann) Marty. She was baptized, confirmed and attended Christ Lutheran Church and school. She later attended Kramer High School in Columbus. She married Alfred Olson in Platte County, Nebraska and later married Wallace Barr in 1956. She worked in Quality Control at Becton-Dickinson for over 30 years. Hulda was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus where she had been active as a greeter and working with the Ladies Aid. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, enjoyed reading, crafts, sewing and music.

Clara R. Bargmann

Clara R. Bargmann, 105, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

Services will be held on Friday, September 28, 2001 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Burial will be in Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2001 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday, September 28, 2001 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM at the church.

Clara Bargmann was born icon September 13, 1896 on a farm 8 miles north of Columbus, Nebraska to Hermann and Meta (Hinrichs) Garms. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She married Roy Bargmann on May 8, 1919. Roy and Clara bought the Garms home place and farmed there until 1936, then moved to a farm south of Columbus where they farmed until they retired in 1950, then moved to Columbus. Clara was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Country Ladies Guild.

Arthur S. Roth

Arthur S. Roth, 99, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Jane Ellefson officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Arthur S. Roth was born icon March 1, 1904 at Columbus, Nebraska to Paul F. and Bertha (Heibel) Roth. He attended parochial schools and graduated from Kramer High School in 1922. In 1927 he joined the National Guard and was a Staff Sgt. in the medical department. He attended a non-commissioned officer school at Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania. Arthur married Helen Hoppe on April 18, 1931 at Christ Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. From 1928 to 1940 he was employed as a production superintendent at the Columbus Baking Co. He learned the baking business at a very early age. He then began working for the Postal Service in Columbus as a substitute clerk, carrier, regular carrier, window clerk, superintendent of mail and assistant Postmaster, retiring in March of 1970. After his retirement he was the manager of the Van Berg Municipal Golf Course for three years.
He was a member of the Wayside Country Club and served two terms on the board of directors and two terms as president. He was secretary of the Columbus Bowling Association for 25 years and elected to the Columbus Nebraska Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a former member of the Elks Country Club and Elks Lodge. Arthur was a member of the Federated Church, the Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Pawnee Shrine Club and Sesostris Temple in Lincoln, Nebraska. His hobbies were golf, bowling, photography and world traveling.

Alice Wetjen

Alice Wetjen, 84 of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday November 30, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be on Thursday, December 4, 2003, 2:00 P.M. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery in rural Columbus. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 1:45 P.M.

Alice Wetjen was born icon February 16, 1919 in Columbus, Nebraska to Edward and Hermine (Brakenhoff) Krumland. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Kramer High School in 1936. She married Loren Wetjen on August 17, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. They moved to California where they lived until after WWII. Upon returning to Columbus, Alice worked at various retail stores throughout the years.
Alice was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in the evening guild and the couples club. She was a member of the "36" Club and the "Sambo" card clubs, and the Pinochle Marathon Club. Alice enjoyed bowling, crafts, sewing, and crocheting.

Herman A. Waak

Herman A. Waak, 88 of Columbus, Nebraska (formerly of Schuyler) died Thursday, December 25, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2003 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Ernest Smith and Rev. Thomas Volker officiating. Interment will be on Monday at 1:00 PM at the Schuyler Cemetery in Schuyler, with military graveside honors by American Legion McLeod Post 47 and VFW Hespen-Mitchell Post 4836.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church. There will be a family prayer service Monday, 10:15 AM at the church.

Herman August Waak was born icon August 3, 1915 in Schuyler, Nebraska to John and Maria (DeBower) Waak. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1933 and attended Concordia College in Seward for one year. He served in the US Army in the European Theatre, from August of 1942 to December of 1945. He then was in the reserves from 1945 to 1949. Herman married Arnella Johannes on April 27, 1947 in Columbus. She preceded him in death on October 14, 1980. He farmed northwest of Schuyler until he retired. He was a former member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schuyler, where he held various offices in the church and school. Herman married Evelyn (Hellbusch) DeWitt on February 19, 1994 and then moved to Columbus. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He loved studying history, reading and playing cards.

Adela Runge

Adela Runge, 93, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, December 22, 2003 at her home.

The funeral service will be Saturday, December 27, 2003, 2:00 P.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek, with Rev. Peter Jark-Swain officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 1:45 P.M.

Adela Augusta Runge was born icon September 28, 1910 in Bloomfield, Nebraska to John Dietrick and Catherine Louise (Dicke) Siefken. She attended rural District 44 School and Columbus High School. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. Adela married August G. Runge on June 12, 1929 at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. She was a homemaker, and was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. Adela loved flowers, gardening, sewing, crafts, and playing cards. For many years she was a member of the Birthday Club.

Vivian M. Simms

Vivian M. Simms, 90, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, August 17, 2003 at the Merrick Manor in Fremont, Nebraska.

Services are Friday, August 22, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus with the Rev. Mike Neely officiating. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2003 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church. Interment will be on Friday, August 22, 2003 at 2:30 PM at the Grand Island City Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Vivian Mae Simms was born icon October 24, 1912 in Guthrie County Iowa to Arthur and Minnie Edythe (McNary) Paullin. She attended a country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1932. Vivian accepted Christ as her savior at the age of 14 at the First Baptist Church in Guthrie Center. She was a faithful worker at the church. She married Charles E. Simms on November 28, 1952 in Omaha, Nebraska. She moved with her husband and children to Nebraska in 1954 and to Columbus in 1961. She was a member of the Highland Park Evangelical Free Church, where she was in charge of the White Cross for 25 years. Vivian was a hairdresser and enjoyed walking.
