Dorothy Settje, 66 of Creston, Nebraska, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2003, 10:30 A.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh with Rev. Terry Timm officiating. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Creston. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 1 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.

Dorothy E. Settje was born icon October 5, 1936 in Columbus, Nebraska to Walter & Erna (Johnson) Leffers. She attended St. Johns Lutheran School and graduated from Columbus High School. On September 1, 1956 Dorothy married Stanley Settje at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Columbus. Dorothy worked for several years at Consumer Public Power. She also did home improvement work, which included painting and staining. Dorothy was very active at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. She was a Sunday School Superintendent for 17 years and was also involved in the Orphan Grain Train. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and her flowers.

Marcia D. Smith

Marcia D. (Schreiber) Smith, 87 of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2003, 10:30 A.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 16 from 4:00 - 7:30 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home with an Eagle's prayer service at 7:30 P.M. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:30 -10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M. Memorials may be directed to the church.

Marcia D. Smith was born icon July 22, 1915 in Weed, California to Coit & Eva (Deland) Everson. She attended schools in California and Oregon before moving to Columbus, Nebraska in 1927 and attending Kramer High School. On April 3, 1932 Marcia married Walter K. Schreiber in Genoa, Nebraska. Walter died on November 27, 1969. On June 23, 1973, Marcia married John G. Smith in Columbus, Nebraska. John died on October 21, 1995. Marcia worked as an LPN at the Columbus Clinic and also at the Columbus Community Hospital. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. Marcia was a 42 year member of the Eagles Auxiliary #1834, where she was past Madam President and a past state officer. She was named the State Auxiliary Mother and had a perfect attendance record for 39 years.

Ruth M. Wilke

Ruth M. Wilke, 98 of Columbus, Nebraska died July 1, 2003 at David Place in David City. Services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, on Saturday, July 05, 2003 at 10:30 AM with Rev. John E. Nelson, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the Christ Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM and at Christ Lutheran Church on Saturday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Ruth M. Wilke was born icon February 20, 1905 in Lyons, Nebraska to Rev. J. Paul and Marie (Ruhland) Kuehnert. At the age of 13, the family moved to rural Columbus where her father was a minister at Christ Lutheran Church. She attended District 15 grade school and graduated from Columbus High School. She married Gottlieb Wilke on September 16, 1925 at Christ Lutheran Church with her father presiding. They made their home in the Christ Lutheran area. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Christ Lutheran Ladies Aid and a member of LWML.

Verla J. Rogers, 78, of Bellwood, Nebraska, formerly of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at the Beverly Healthcare in Columbus. Private family services will be held.

Verla J. Rogers was born icon July 31, 1924 in Columbus, NE to Sid and Vesta (Sodders) Crouse. Verla attended school in Columbus. On May 13, 1967 she married Royce Rogers in Yankton, SD. They lived most of their lives in the Columbus area. Verla owned and operated several restaurants in the Columbus area.

James A. Woodhead

James A. Woodhead, 72, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, September 23, 2001 at his home. A Memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Private family interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, Columbus.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church Columbus, NE on Thursday, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. A family prayer service will be held on Thursday at 10:45 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society or Donors Choice. There will be a lunch served after the service at the VFW.

James was born icon July 18, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska to Joseph and Myrtle (Johnson) Woodhead. He graduated from Omaha Benson High School in 1946. While in high school, James participated in football and track. He attended the University of Nebraska - Omaha, and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Business. He married Lee Wildfang on September 12, 1949 in Omaha. In 1951, James joined the US Army and was stationed in Japan in the Finance Corp.
Upon his discharge in 1953, James went to work for Mobil Oil Corporation as a Marketing Representative. During his career with Mobil Oil, James and his family lived in Omaha, Lincoln, Chadron, McCook, Kansas City, Des Moines and finally in 1969 the family moved to Columbus. He retired in 1984 after 31 years with Mobil Oil.
James was an avid outdoors man. He enjoying hunting, fishing, golf, gardening and woodworking. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW, American Legion and the Eagles. He was very active in the lives of his grandchildren.

James is survived by:

Lester Wurdeman

Lester Wurdeman, 74, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at Columbus Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Saturday, November 03, 2001 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Gil Karges officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 03, 2001 at Gass Haney Funeral Home from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Lester G. Wurdeman was born icon on February 10, 1927 in Columbus, Nebraska to Louis and Alma (Garms) Wurdeman. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School and Kramer High School. Lester served in the US Army from May 5, 1945 to March 23, 1947. He married Mary Lou Clark in 1949, she preceded him in death in 1953. Lester married Barbara Jean Allison on August 1, 1964, she preceded him in death on February 26, 2001.

Lester worked for Watson Bros. Transportation Co. from 1950 to 1962, then for Bee Line Motor Freight from 1962 until he retired in 1985. Lester was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
