Jerome Leo Mark

Jerome L. Mark, 81 of Platte Center, Nebraska died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, Nebraska.

The funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church Grand Prairie on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Theresa Meyer officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Monday, from 3:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and at Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, from 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. with a family prayer service at 10:45 A.M. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.

Jerome Leo Mark was born icon January 8, 1923 in rural Platte Center, Nebraska to Leo and Gertrude (Kuehnel) Mark. He attended District #22 school and graduated from Platte Center High School in 1940.

Jerome married Margaret Janssen on September 5, 1945 at Zion Lutheran Church Grand Prairie. He lived his entire life on the "Mark" family home and engaged in farming until his retirement. The homestead has been in the Mark family since 1888.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in teaching Sunday School, Sunday School superintendent, and served as a church councilman. He was also active on Synod Committees and the Lutheran Men in Missions. Jerome worked with the National Farmers Organization for many years. He also served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 117 of Platte Center for 11 years. He was a member of the Gideon's.

Jerome was very active in the activities and fund raisers that took place for the community of Platte Center. He worked on the formation of District #84 school as well as the planning committee and the Foundation Board for Central Community College. He also served on the ESU board for a number of years. Jerome enjoyed his fishing trips to Gavins Point Dam and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jennifer Lynn Reese

Jennifer Lynn Reese, 31 of Columbus, Nebraska died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, Nebraska, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at 10:00 AM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Will Sanborn officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, July 5 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Red Cross Blood Bank.

Jennifer was born icon January 22, 1973 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Connie Reese and Carolyn (Peterson) Allen. She attended Columbus Public Schools and graduated from high school in Chadron, Nebraska after joining the Job Corps. Through her years with the Job Corps she worked in Chadron, then in Ogden, Utah where she was a graphic artist doing work on auto bodies. Her connections then took her to Missouri, Iowa, Florida and finally to Portland, Oregon where she worked as a customer service representative at Nextel Wireless. She returned to Columbus in May, 2004.

Herman D. Ernst

Herman D. Ernst, 71, of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly of Columbus) died Monday, March 15, 2004 at Homestead Healthcare in Lincoln.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2:00 P.M. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln (3825 Wildbriar Ln. - south of Hwy 2 off of 40th St.) with a family prayer service at 1:45 P.M. Military Honors will be conducted by the Columbus American Legion, Hartman Post #84. There will be a private family burial in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery in rural Columbus. There is no visitation.

Herman David Ernst was born icon May 3, 1932 in Columbus, Nebraska to John & Enola (Hall) Ernst. Herman attended school at the District 16 school in Polk Country and graduated from Kramer High School in 1949. On August 19, 1952 he entered the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged on July 20, 1954 after attaining the rank of Sergeant. Herman continued his service in the reserves until 1960. He was awarded the National Defense Services Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Good Conduct Award, and the Korean Service Medal. On August 6, 1954 Herman married JoAnn Frese at the Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus. He was employed at Lindsay Manufacturing as a supervisor of Safety and Security until his retirement. After retirement, Herman worked part time at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. In 2001, they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to be near their three children. Herman was a member of the Columbus American Legion, Hartman Post #84 where he served on the Honor Guard for 15 years, and a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Memorials may be directed to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice.

Lisa L. Bock

Lisa L. Bock, 43 of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Klatt and Rev. Thomas Volker officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorial are suggested to the American Breast Cancer Society or donor's choice.

Lisa L. Bock was born icon January 23, 1961 to Martin E. and Catherine J. (Rash) Wharton in Evreux, France. After her fathers tour of duty in the US Air Force, they returned to the United States in 1962 and settled in New Mexico. In 1964 the family moved to Virginia and then in 1969 moved to Rock Port, Missouri where Lisa graduated from high school in 1979. She attended Creighton University for one semester and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in May of 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.

She married Tom Bock on November 26, 1987 in Rock Port. She taught in Rockport until 1994 when they moved to Brookfield, Missouri where she worked for the school system for two years. They then moved to Columbus in 1996 where she was a Language Art Instructor at the Columbus Middle School.

She was a member of the Columbus Educators Association, Nebraska State Educators Association, National Educators Association, and the Nebraska State Reading Association. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. Lisa enjoyed interior and exterior decorating, flowers and supporting her boys in their activities.

Katherine Byrnes

Katherine Byrnes, 92 of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, May 10, 2004 at the Edgewood Vista in Fremont, Nebraska.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 13 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Tom Weisbecker officiating. Interment is in St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 6:30 - 7:30 P.M. with a 7:30 P.M. rosary service at Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Katherine A. Byrnes was born icon June 30, 1911 in Columbus, Nebraska to John C. & Anna (Gietzen) Byrnes. Katherine attended school at the St. Francis Academy and graduated from Kramer High School in 1930. She went to work as the Clerk of Platte County Court in 1931 until 1959. In 1959, Katherine was elected as the Register of Deeds and served 5 terms until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries and also of the Platte County Historical Society. Katherine was a member of St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church where she was active in Perpetual Adoration Society, and the Guild. She enjoyed traveling and playing Bridge. Memorials may be directed to St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

Martha A. Navrkal

Martha A. Navrkal, 84 of Columbus, Nebraska (formerly of Bellwood, Nebraska), died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at her home.

The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, 10:30 A.M. at the Bellwood United Methodist Church in Bellwood with Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. Interment is in the Bellwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:00 - 8:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM at the church. Memorials are donors choice.

Martha A. Navrkal was born icon August 1, 1919 in Prague, Nebraska to Frank and Anna (Mach) Vanek. She graduated from Prague High School in 1937. She worked as a nanny and a telephone operator after high school. On March 17, 1942, she married John A. Navrkal in Wahoo, Nebraska. While John was serving his country during WW II, Martha worked as a nanny in Omaha and Wahoo. Upon John's return from military service, they dairy farmed in the Prague, Schuyler and Bellwood, Nebraska area. They moved into Bellwood in 1966. Martha moved to Columbus in 2000.
Martha enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning and playing cards. She was a member of the Bellwood United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's group.

Viola I. Stack

Viola I. Stack, 95 of David City, Nebraska, formerly of Bellwood, Nebraska, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at David Place in David City.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 28, 2004, 1:30 P.M. at the Bellwood United Methodist Church in Bellwood with Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. There will be no visitation.

Viola I. Stack was born icon September 29, 1908 in Merriman, Nebraska to Wallis & Claire (Allen) Benedict. She graduated from Bellwood High School in 1927 and from the Nursing School at Lincoln General in Lincoln, Nebraska. On September 22, 1951, Viola married Leslie V. Stack in Bellwood. She was a hospital nurse in San Francisco, Imperial, Ogallala before moving to Bellwood and working at the Columbus Lutheran Hospital. Viola was a 52 year member of the Bellwood United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Bellwood Rebekah Lodge and a former member of the Bellwood Legion Auxiliary, Post #326. Viola enjoyed knitting for herself and her family and friends.
