Freddie C. Bates

Freddie C. Bates, 89 of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at Mory's Haven in Columbus.

The funeral service will be on Monday, November 29, 10:30 A.M. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Michael Klatt and Ernest Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church with a 10:15 A.M. family prayer service.

Freddie was born icon October 2, 1915 in Waverly Hall, Georgia to Lazarus and Ethel (Webster) Storey. She graduated from Waverly Hall High School. On December 31, 1939 she married William Bates in Atlanta, Georgia. As a wedding present, they were given a franchise to open the Coke Bottling Company in Columbus, Nebraska.

Freddie worked for a number of years at Behlen Manufacturing as a service clerk. She enjoyed cooking and playing Bridge. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Henry Borst

Henry Borst, 40 of Leigh, Nebraska died Saturday, November 6, 2004 in rural Columbus, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 12, 2004 at 1:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Leigh, Nebraska with Rev. Theresa Meyer officiating. The visitation will be on Friday from 12:00 - 1:00 P.M. at the church.

Henry Borst was born icon March 31, 1964 in Owosso, Michigan to Irwin W. & Josephine (Waterous) Borst. Henry graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School in Michigan. Henry joined the U.S. Army on May 6, 1983 and served his country until he was honorably discharged on May 5, 1989. On August 15, 1992 Henry married Naomi Criss in Norfolk, Nebraska where they resided for many years. In 1998 they moved to Leigh, Nebraska where Henry worked as a craftsman. Henry was a jack-of-all-trades and did all types of work. He was very particular about his work and took great pride in his accomplishments. Henry loved to refurbish and restore old items and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid Harley Davidson rider and enjoyed spending time riding.

Lawrence A. Osten

Lawrence A. Osten, 84, of Madison, Nebraska died Monday, April 5, 2004 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be on Friday, April 9, 2004 at 10:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church 14 miles north of Columbus, with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Creston, Nebraska. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM with a family prayer service at 9:45 AM at the church.

Lawrence A. Osten was born icon August 1, 1919 in rural Platte County, Nebraska to J. Otto and Ida (Hoefelman) Osten. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. He attended St. John's Lutheran School. Lawrence married Marjorie Bachmann on December 29, 1943 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Creston, Nebraska. He lived and farmed in Platte County until 1991, when he retired and moved to Columbus. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had served on the board as a trustee and was an elder. He also served on the school board and was a member of the Lutheran Layman's League.

Mildred Bruhn

Mildred Bruhn, 85 of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment is in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is on Wednesday from 3:00 - 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Thursday from 9:30 until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mildred Bruhn was born icon April 4, 1919 in Leigh, Nebraska to Dan and Minnie (Greaser) Bauman. She attended Colfax county District 41 school. She worked as a hired hand for several farm families in the Leigh area. On September 30, 1939 she married Earl Bruhn in York, Nebraska. After her marriage, Mildred worked at Columbus Laundry, Jordon's Bakery and then retired from Becton-Dickinson.

Mildred was a member of the church and was active in the Ladies Aid and the Naomi Circle. She was a member of the Navy Mothers and did volunteer work at the Columbus Senior Center. She helped raise many nephews and nieces.

Esther A. Sharpe

Esther A. Sharpe, 95, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Morys Haven in Columbus.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the Federated Church in Columbus with Rev. Don Wilson and Rev. Jane Ellefson officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 18 from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. There will be a private family interment at the Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus.

Esther A. Sharpe was born icon December 26, 1908 in Buffalo, New York to Rev. Herman H. and Lydia (Heyer) Achtermann. When she was six months old she moved with her family to Klemme, Iowa, then to South Dakota and then moved back to Aplington, Iowa. She graduated from Aplington High School in 1928. In 1931 she received her registered nursing degree from Marshalltown Evangelical Hospital in Marshalltown, IA. Esther moved to St. Louis, MO, where for two years she was a governess for three children in a millionaire's home. She then did general and private duty at St. Louis' Barnes Hospital. Later she moved back to Hampton, IA and worked in a doctor's office.
Esther married Wilbur E. Sharpe on December 26, 1941 at Chapin, IA. While her husband was on overseas duty during WW II, she obtained her anesthesia degree at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. She then worked in the hospital in Hampton, IA. Upon her husband's return, they lived in Reno, NV and Dayton, OH, before settling in Detroit, MI, where their three children were born. Later they moved to Battle Creek, MI, then to Omaha, NE and finally to Columbus, NE in 1964, where her husband purchased an accounting practice.
In Columbus she worked for nine months as the Assistant R.N. at the Columbus Manor when it first opened. From 1968 to 1970 she was a school nurse in the Columbus Public Schools, working at the Columbus High, North Park, West Park, Emerson and Lost Creek schools. For many years she worked in her husband's office.
Esther was a member of the Federated Church, where she served as an Elder, sang in the chancel choir, and was a member of the Women's Fellowship and Circle 1. She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in which she was a former officer and Girl of the Year. She was a member and former officer in Chapter FJ of P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a former member of the Hospital Auxiliary and sang for three years with the Mother's Singers. Esther loved gardening, reading, music, traveling, and things to do with colors. Memorials may be directed to the Federated Church Building Fund, Morys Haven Nursing Home, or donor's choice.

Lilly Benes

Lilly Benes, 91, of Clarkson, Nebraska, formerly of Creston, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Norfolk.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at New Zion Presbyterian Church in Clarkson, Nebraska at 10:30 AM with Rev. Earl F. Underwood Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Creston, Nebraska at 1:30 P.M. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM at New Zion Presbyterian Church.

Lilly Benes was born icon February 27, 1912 in rural Platte County to John & Mary (Brunken) Brunken. She attended rural Platte County grade school and attended Shell Creek Baptist Church. She married Henry Hellwig on August 10, 1938 in Omaha. Henry passed away on March 19, 1947. She then married Joe Benes Jr. on February 23, 1949 in Columbus. Lilly farmed with Joe in the Creston, Nebraska area from 1949 until 1987 when they retired and moved to Clarkson, Nebraska. In 1998, Lilly entered the nursing home where she remained until her death. Joe passed away on August 7, 1999. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, and sewing.

Dean M. Klug

Dean M. Klug, 76 of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, April 26, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, rural Columbus on Friday with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a family prayer service at 10:45 AM at the church.

Dean Klug was born icon April 26, 1928 in Leigh, Nebraska to Louis and Irene (Hunteman) Klug. He entered the US Army on December 14, 1950 and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1952. Dean was united in married to Marilyn Asche on April 12, 1953. Dean farmed for a number of years. He was a truck driver before going to work for D & L Manufacturing. After his retirement from D & L, he worked for Wayne Feeds. In 1983 Dean and Marilyn moved to Kellogg, Iowa where Dean worked for the State Division of Natural Resource, Parks & Recreation Department. They returned to Columbus in 1989.

Dean was a resident of Platte County and enjoyed traveling, woodworking, playing cards, metal crafts, golf, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion and an usher at Trinity Lutheran Church.
