Rose Navrkal

Rose Navrkal, 97, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at her home.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 at 11:00 AM at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Father Tom Weisbecker officiating. Interment will be at the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM with a 7:30 vigil service and continue on Tuesday, from 9:45 AM - 10:45 AM all at Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Rose Navrkal was born icon December 27, 1906 on a farm in the Wilson Township area of Colfax County, Nebraska to James and Rose (Zoubek) Horejsi and attended Wilson School. She met Stanley Navrkal at a dance at the Wilson Church Hall and on January 5, 1931. They were married at St. Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They farmed near Leigh and Clarkson, Nebraska until 1950 when they moved to Columbus. They returned to farm near Richland in the early 1960's and later returned to Columbus. Rose worked at Montgomery Ward's, Scott's Store, and made custom draperies.
Rose enjoyed dressmaking, crocheting doilies, painting landscapes, flowers, gardening, canning, and baking kolaches and rye bread. She collected dolls, pitchers, salt & pepper shakers, and many other interesting and unique items. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

David H. Cook

David Cook, 57 of rural Monroe, Nebraska died Monday, July 12, 2004 as a result of a truck accident in New Mexico.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 17 at 10:00 AM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Bringewatt officiating. Interment is in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 4:00 - 8:00 PM and continues on Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time, all at the funeral home. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 AM on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to donors choice.

David was born icon December 28, 1946 in Columbus, Nebraska to Harold F. and Lena W. (Goedeken) Cook. He was baptized on February 9, 1947 at Christ Lutheran Church and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Monroe, NE. David attended District 32 school in Monroe and graduated from Monroe High School. David was a member of the National Guard in Columbus from 1966 to 1972. David was a career trucker, most recently driving for Hunt Transportation, Inc.

David is survived by:

Velma Frese

Velma Frese, 92, of Belgrade, Montana, formerly of Columbus died Sunday, January 05, 2003 at Edgewood Vista in Belgrade, Montana.

Services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, Columbus, Nebraska on Friday, January 10, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Michael Klatt officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. at 10:00 AM on Friday.

Velma Victoria Frese was born icon November 26, 1910 in Colfax County, Nebraska to Emil Henry and Rosa Sophia (Wilke) Grotelueschen. Velma attended Christ Lutheran School and graduated from Leigh High School. She attended Wayne State Normal School and earned a teachers certificate, she then taught at Langley School in rural Colfax County. On March 1, 1936, Velma and LeRoy Adolph Frese were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus, Nebraska. The couple farmed north of Columbus until 1998.

Esther Tessendorf

Esther Tessendorf, 92, of Platte Center, Nebraska, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, October 20, 2003, 10:00 A.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Platte Center with Rev. John Hellwege officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 19 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday from 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 9:45 A.M.

Esther L. Tessendorf was born icon August 29, 1911 in Platte Center, Nebraska to Ernst & Martha (Nitz) Fischer. She attended school in Platte Center and the Omaha School of Business. After her schooling, she worked as a bookkeeper at the lumberyard in Platte Center and also at a bakery in Columbus. She married Wallace Tessendorf on June 27, 1937 in Platte Center. Esther was a lifetime resident of Platte Center and was the cashier of the Platte Center Bank. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Platte Center and the Ladies Aid. Esther was also a 50 year member of the Platte Center American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the birthday club.

FRANCES E. FERRIS

Frances E. Ferris, 86, formerly of Columbus, died October 30, 2000 in Berthoud, Colorado. Services will be held on Saturday November 4, 2000, at 2:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Dorsie Ivey officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Silver Creek Cemetery, Silver Creek, Nebraska.

Frances E. Ferris, 86, of Berthoud, Colorado, formerly of Columbus, was born icon January 10, 1914 to James & Josephine (Anderson) Buchanan in Genoa. She graduated from Genoa High School. On October 9, 1934 she married Lester Ferris in Fullerton, Nebraska. She assisted her husband in running a gas station/cafe in Wyoming and the Columbus area. She worked for five years at B-D in Columbus. She moved to Colorado in 1999. She attended the Federated Church in Columbus, Nebraska.

ARTHUR W. FEYE

Arthur W. Feye, 85, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward, Nebraska. Service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Lunch will be served in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Interment will take place at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Leigh, NE, with Military Honors by American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 1, 2000 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 A.M. Saturday at the church.

Arthur William Feye was born icon April 2, 1915 in Sherman Township (Creston), Platte County, Nebraska to Fred & Alma (Wurdeman) Feye. He attended Boheet School in Sherman Township through the seventh grade when his family moved to Columbus, NE. He graduated from Kramer High School in 1933.
On April 14, 1940 Arthur married Marie Hassebrook of rural Platte Center, NE. They were married at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie, rural Columbus, NE. Following his marriage he worked at Swift Company in Columbus until called to duty with the U.S. Army in WWII on August 27, 1943 where he served with the 977th Army Corp. of Engineers in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. He was honorably discharged on November 18, 1945. After the war he continued his military service in the National Guard and the Army Reserve. For 28 years he worked for the U.S. Post Office in Columbus, first as a mail carrier and later as a rural carrier. Following his retirement in 1974, he worked for Gilmore and Assoc. for several years.
Arthur was a member of the VFW, a member and past-president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), and served on the Board of the Platte County Museum. He was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus where he taught Sunday School and directed the Choir for many years. He was a member of the Apollo Club for many years. He enjoyed music, travel, woodworking, and sports, especially baseball and Husker football.
Memorials are suggested to Family Choice.

Robert E. Brega

Robert E. Brega, 78, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday, October 8, 2004 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska after a long battle with Parkinson's.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Episcopal Church in Columbus with Rev. Nancy Idenden officiating. Interment is in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 12 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church, Columbus Public Schools Foundation, or Parkinson's research.

Robert was born icon September 28, 1926 in Callaway, Nebraska to Everitte and Grace (Chiles) Brega. He attended school in Callaway and graduated from Grand Island High School, Grand Island, Nebraska. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1952. In 1957, Robert received a Master of Arts in Industrial Arts from Colorado State College of Education at Greeley, Colorado.

Robert served in the US Navy during WW ll from January 17, 1945 to July 8, 1946. He returned to active duty during the Korean War from September 29, 1950 to July 13, 1952.

He began his teaching career in Palmer, Nebraska where he taught Industrial Arts and Mathematics for two years. In 1955 he moved to Giltner, Nebraska and was High School Principal and taught Industrial Arts and Mathematics for five years. In 1960 he moved to Columbus and taught Mathematics for two years in the Columbus Junior High School. He then moved up to the Senior High School and began teaching Drafting and Mathematics. He later taught in the shop area teaching Woodworking and Metal Shop. Until his retirement in 1989, Robert taught Vocational Machine Shop and Welding and was the coordinator for students in the Trades and Industry Internship Program. He also taught adult classes in Welding and Machine Shop for Central Community College. Bob was vocationally certified by the State of Nebraska to teach Industrial Arts, Trade and Industrial Metals, Trade and Industrial Drafting and Diversified Occupations.

While teaching, Bob worked during the summer months for Dale Electronics, Middlestate Manufacturing, Johansen Construction, and Fleischer Manufacturing. After his retirement he held temporary jobs with Becton-Dickinson, Paige Electric, Nebraska Irrigation, Douglas Lomason, and HyVee.

Robert married Marilyn "Mardi" Discoe on August 6, 1959 in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where he was active in the choir. He was a member of the American Legion and the Legion Chorus, and helped with 4-H Clubs and girls softball. He was a life member of the National Education Association, Nebraska Education Association, Columbus Education Association, American Vocational Association, American Industrial Arts Association, and the Nebraska Industrial Education Association where he had served as president. Robert enjoyed bowling and woodworking.
