Viola Zlomke

Viola Zlomke, 93 of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at St. Joseph's Villa, Omaha, Nebraska.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, April 15, 10:30 A.M. at St. Isidore Catholic Church with Father Joe Miksch officiating. Interment will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. with a Vigil Service at 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church.

Viola M. Zlomke was born icon March 2, 1911 in Ansley, Nebraska to Merton and Norah (Holley) McMillan. Viola graduated from Ansley High School and also from the St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island, Nebraska. On December 29, 1941 she married Glen Zlomke in Grand Island. Viola was a nurse in Grand Island for many year before they moved to Columbus in 1960. In Columbus, Viola was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church where she was very active in many parish organizations, including the Legion of Mary, Pro Life, the Blue Army, Christian Mothers, and the Franciscan Missionary Union. She also worked for 10 years at Dale Electronics before her retirement.

Marcella M. Kaufmann

Marcella M. Kaufmann, 86 of St. Edward, Nebraska died Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be on Friday, August 16, 2002, 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 15, 2002 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday, August 16, 2002 from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 1:45 P.M.

Marcella M. Kaufmann was born icon April 15, 1916, north of Monroe, Nebraska, to Carl and Anna (Lammers) Brandt. Marcella was raised on a farm in rural Platte County, Nebraska and attended District 32 (O'Kay) school. On April 18, 1937 she married Fred Kaufmann at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Monroe. They lived south of St. Edward for 10 years, and in 1947 they purchased a farm northeast of St. Edward and continued to live there. Marcella and Fred were married for 62 years and celebrated their 50th anniversary at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Marcella enjoyed traveling and playing cards.

Edith J. Nansel

Edith J. Nansel, 93, of Manassas, Virginia died Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at the Marshall Manor in Marshall, Virginia. Services will be held at the Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, May 10, 2002 at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Bev Minor officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, May 9, 2002 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and on Friday, May 10, 2002 from 9:30 AM until service time. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM on Friday.

Edith Jean Nansel was born icon June 4, 1908 in Meadow Grove, Nebraska to George & Manie (Crook) Muffly. She graduated from Wayne State College in 1941 and married John Nansel on December 20, 1941 at the Methodist Church in Meadow Grove, Nebraska. She taught school in the Meadow Grove and Norfolk, Nebraska area and for many years was a teacher in Monroe, Nebraska.

Leroy Herman Kapels

Leroy Herman Kapels, 64, of Creston, Nebraska, died October 10, 2001 at the St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois. Services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church (14 miles north) on Monday, October 15, 2001 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Pieper Post 306 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Sunday, October 14, 2001, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at St. John's Lutheran Church on Monday, from 9:30 AM until service time. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM, Monday at the church.
Leroy, twin son of Adolph and Elvira (Osten) Kapels, was born icon June 14, 1937 on the family farm, south of Creston, Nebraska. He attended St. John's Lutheran grade school and graduated from Creston High School. He enlisted in the Army on April 24, 1959 and was honorably discharged on March 17, 1961. He received his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and spent twelve months in Korea with the 1st. Division 8th Cavalry.
Leroy married Lorna Loseke, a twin daughter of Otto and Anna Studnicka Loseke on September 15, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Church, Leigh, Nebraska. They lived for 5 years south of Creston on the former Oscar Sander farm, which was owned by the Kapels, and then moved to the home place (El Crest Farms) in the fall of 1968.
The home farm place where Leroy was born, known as the El Crest Farms, is the original home place of 240 acres owned by Hinrich and Meta Kapels and then Adolph and Elvira Kapels. The dairy department was operated by Leroy and his twin brother, Elroy. Leroy was thirteen years old when he started his dairying career and retired from the dairy in 1995. Leroy was active in 4-H, a 4-H leader, served on the Diary Herd Improvement Association Board, past Lions Club member, member of the Extension Council of Platte County and the National Farmers Organization. He also served on the Lower Elkhorn Board, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He also served on the Farmers Coop Board of Creston. He and Lorna served as FHA parents for several years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church (14 miles north of Columbus).

Anna Ernst

Anna Ernst, 90, of Duncan, Nebraska, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at Beverly Health Care in Columbus, Nebraska. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2001 at 10:30 PM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Columbus, with the Rev. Nancy Peebles officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, Columbus. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 2, 2001 at the Gass Haney Funeral Home, Columbus from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday, November 3 from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM, Saturday at the church.

Anna was born icon March 19, 1911 in Columbus to Christian and Margaret (Zybach) Schupbach. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. She married Reinhold Ernst on February 15, 1933 in Columbus. They farmed together west of Duncan. Anna was a homemaker. She loved to play cards and was a member of the Wil-Es-Lor-An card club for more than 50 years. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing and traveling. She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ and the Anna Circle at St. Luke's.

E. H. "Bud" Oppliger

E. H. "Bud" Oppliger, 77, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 18, 2001, at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 21, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus with Rev. Mike Neely officiating. A private family interment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 21, 2001, from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church.

E. H. "Bud" Oppliger was born icon February 4, 1924 in Polk County, Nebraska to Ernest and Louise (Winkelman) Oppliger. Bud attended school in Polk County and also went to Kramer High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on January 17, 1945. He served in the Philippines and earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on November 27, 1946. On November 26, 1955, Bud married Winnie Olson in Columbus, Nebraska. They lived South of Columbus in Polk County where Bud enjoyed being outdoors and hunting, especially duck and deer hunting. Bud was also known for raising his "Oppliger Melons". For the last 12 years, Bud and Winnie would spend their winters in Texas. Bud was a member of Highland Park Evangelical Free Church.

Cheryl M. Keith , 56, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, May 08, 2001 at her residence in Columbus .
Services will be held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus on Monday, May 14, 2001 at 10:30 AM with Father Tom Weisbecker officiating. Interment will be at the Belgrade Main Cemetery in Belgrade, Nebraska on Monday, May 14, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 13, 2001 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM vigil service and on Monday, May 14, 2001 from 9:30 AM - 10:15 AM all at Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Cheryl M. Keith was born icon April 15, 1945 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to George and Hilda (Rupp) Bollig. Cheryl attended St. Bonaventure Grade School in Columbus and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in North Platte in 1963. She moved back to Columbus in 1963 and on February 27, 1965 Cheryl married Lyle Keith in Columbus at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. They lived in Columbus and Cheryl worked at Dales and also at Becton Dickinson. Cheryl was active in Christian Mothers at St. Bonaventure and she was also a Girl Scout Leader.
