Lawrence Lusche

Lawrence Lusche, 76, of rural Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at the family farm.

Services will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2003 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek with Rev. Peter Jark-Swain officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Lawrence Gustave Dietrich Lusche was born icon November 9, 1926 at Columbus, Nebraska to G.W. and Elsa (Siefken) Lusche. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. He attended grade school at District # 2, and graduated from Kramer High School in 1944. Lawrence married Marion Ahrens on September 4, 1949 at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. He farmed his entire life northeast of Columbus. He was president of the Bismark Township Board, treasurer of the Calvary Cemetery Board, and president of Followers of Christ at St. John's. Lawrence was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, playing cards and gardening.

Virginia I. Ewert

Virginia I. Ewert, 83, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2003, 12:30 P.M. at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Michael Klatt officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus on Saturday at 11:30 A.M. Visitation will be on Friday, June 6 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Virginia I. Ewert was born icon February 16, 1920 in Colfax County, Nebraska to John L. and Eunice V. (Witters) Rickert. Virginia attended District #12 school and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1936. She married Milton Ewert on February 1, 1939 in Columbus. Virginia worked as a clerk at Becton-Dickinson for many years before her retirement. Virginia was a member of the Golden Keys Extension Club , where she also served on the Extension council, and she was also a member of the Merry Mixers Card Club. Virginia was a 4-H leader and council member and was active in the Ladies Aid at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. She enjoyed her crafts especially fixing and repairing dolls. Memorials may be directed to the Leukemia Association, American Heart Association, or Peace Lutheran Church

Janice Niedfeldt

Janice Niedfeldt, 71, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at the University Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, with Rev. John E. Nelson, Jr. officiating. Interment is at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitations will be held on Friday, March 21, 2003 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday, March 22, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church.

Janice Niedfeldt was born icon April 27, 1931 in rural Richardson County, Nebraska to Frederick & Ethel (Bauer) Krueger. She attended numerous rural schools in Richardson County and graduated from Dawson High School in 1949. She then attended Peru State College where she received her teaching certificate. Janice taught for three years in various schools in Richardson and Nemaha Counties.
On June 15, 1952, she married Kenneth Niedfeldt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Falls City, Nebraska. After Kenneth's military service, they settled near Verdon, Nebraska. They moved to Columbus, Nebraska in 1969, starting Mid-Nebraska Communications in 1973. Janice was an active partner of the business and was the company bookkeeper.
Janice was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where she had been active in LWML, AAL, LLL, Altar Guild and Lay Shepherds. She was a member of the Sugar & Spice Extension Club, the election committee, loved to travel, collect bears, enjoyed flowers and birds. She followed her grandchildren's programs and activities.

Leonard R. Richards

Leonard R. Richards, 67, of Creston, Nebraska died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, Nebraska. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 10:30 AM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Creston, with Rev. Marsha Jark-Swain officiating. Interment will be in Osceola, Nebraska at 2:30 PM with Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. There is no visitation.

Leonard Richards was born icon April 9, 1935 in Osceola, Nebraska to Earl and Nettie (Wolfe) Richards. While he was still a youth, the family moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska where Leonard graduated from high school. He moved to Hastings, Nebraska and worked for Western Land Roller, Hastings Irrigation and later drove truck for Conoco. Leonard was an independent trucker for 4.5 years. He married Charlotte Bower in 1955. Two children were born icon to this union - Gregory and Judy. He later married Pamela Boden on August 9, 1963 in Hastings. Three children were born icon to this union - Todd, Jan, and Amber.
Leonard moved to Creston, Nebraska in 1977 and worked for and later owned Foxes Upholstery in Columbus. In 2000, he and Pam moved the upholstery business to Creston. Leonard served two terms on the Creston Town Board. His first term was that of mayor. He was a past member of the Lions Club, had worked as a janitor for the school for 13 years and for 25 years served as a volunteer on the fire department.

Theodore (Jim) Frederick, 86, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus.

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at 1:30 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 11 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Wednesday from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Theodore LeRoy "Jim" Frederick was born icon May 29, 1916 in Genoa, Nebraska to Everett and Ida (Gustafson) Frederick. He attended Nance County rural schools and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1935. He farmed in Nance County and moved to Columbus in 1996. He married Lorraine Keith on October 12, 1947 at the Methodist Church in Albion, Nebraska. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Fullerton. He was a 4-H Club leader for several years and a school board member for many years.

Duane M. Ernst

Duane M. Ernst, 84, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Beverly Healthcare of Columbus. Services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church Columbus, NE on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at 10:00 AM with Rev.'s Thomas Volker and Ernest Smith officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus with Military Honors by the American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84.
Visitations will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM and at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM. There will be a 40 & 8 service on Friday night at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 AM Saturday at the church.

Duane M. Ernst was born icon March 15, 1919 in Columbus, Nebraska to Julius and Anna (Schwank) Ernst. He was a 1937 graduate of Kramer High School in Columbus. On December 23, 1940 Duane entered the US Army and was honorably discharged on October 11, 1945. He married Alyce Becher on February 20, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. Together they farmed southwest of Columbus until the late 1980's. They continued to live on the farm for several years after retiring from farming. Alyce passed away on June 14, 2001.
Duane was a member of the American Legion as well as the American Legion Honor Guard for many years. He received the Honor Guard Award in 1995. He was also a member of the 40 & 8 Club. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, the Columbus Izaak Walton League, the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department, and various agriculture organizations. He was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus and had served on many boards and had been active in the Second Milers group.
Duane enjoyed traveling, gardening, hunting, fishing, antique engines, and spending time with his family.

Margaret H. Edmison, 92, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, May 11, 2003 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the Gass Haney Chapel with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. A private graveside service was held on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at the Columbus Cemetery.

Margaret H. Edmison was born icon June 16, 1910 at Leigh, Nebraska to Adolf and Anna Marie (Echtenkamp) Marty. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, Nebraska. Margaret attended Christ Lutheran School and graduated from Columbus High School. She married Thomas H. Edmison on June 24, 1943 at Columbus, Nebraska. Margaret worked as a receptionist at Becton-Dickinson Company for many years, until her retirement. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a former member of the Evening Guild.
