Valetta Kluever

Valetta Kluever, 80 of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at the Alegent Health - Immanuel Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be on Monday, September 13, 2004 at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating. Interment is in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 - 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Monday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Cancer Society.

Valetta Kluever was born icon September 28, 1923 in rural Platte County, Nebraska to Raymond and Bertha (Jones) Lewis. She attended Postville School in rural Platte County. Valetta worked at Cushman War Industries in Lincoln and at the First National Bank of Nebraska (First Trust Department) in Lincoln. She married Allen Kluever on June 16, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Columbus. In 1963 they opened Central Parts and Machine, Inc. where she was the office manager. In 1983 a satellite location in Albion, Nebraska was opened. She served on the Advisory Board for American Parts Systems.
Valetta had been involved in: 4-H leader for 10 years, Cub Scouts leader for two years, Brownie leader for three years, Girl Scout leader for one year, PTA president for one year, Art Gallery docent for four years, charter member of the Apartment Association for two years, organized the first garden club in Columbus, campaign volunteer for the Platte County Republican party, area coordinator for the American Cancer Society Reach to Recover Program for 13 years, Methodist Church Board of Trustee member for five years, Endowment Committee secretary for seven years, Sunday school teacher for 10 years, dinner chairwoman for Methodist fund-raisers for 10 years, paraphernalia director of Jobs Daughters for three years and City Golf Board for two years.
She was a member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for over 20 years, has a life membership in the PTA, a life membership in Methodist Women Society, member of American Business Women Association, was honored twice as "Woman of the Year" by Beta Sigma Phi, held offices in the local Beta Sigma Phi Chapter and was involved with the ladies senior golf league. She was Queen Isabella in 1999. She enjoyed golf and playing bridge.

Vernetta Barrington

Vernetta Barrington, 74, of Leigh, Nebraska died Monday, April 12, 2004 at the University Of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh, Nebraska with Rev. Terry Timm officiating. Interment will be at the West Lawn Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska at 2:30 P.M. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. with a 10:15 A.M. family prayer service at the church.

Vernetta Barrington was born icon June 28, 1929 in Columbus, Nebraska to Herman and Mildred (Stevenson) Muhle. She attended Christ Lutheran grade school and was confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church Shell Creek. Vernetta graduated from Creston High School in 1947. She attended Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha. She married Harold Barrington on December 30, 1964 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Creston, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on September 1, 1986. Vernetta worked at Bekins Van and Storage and the Salvation Army. She lived in Leigh and Omaha, Nebraska.

Ora Bakenhus

Ora Bakenhus, 84, of Elberon, Iowa died January 20, 2004 at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 24, at 10:30 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Columbus with Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt officiating. Interment is in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post # 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be Friday, January 23 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM at the church.

Ora Bakenhus was born icon October 2, 1919 in Leigh, Nebraska to Oscar & Martha (Otte) Bakenhus. He attended Christ Lutheran School in rural Columbus. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII with the 696 Petroleum Distribution Co. He married Evelyn Rammelsberg in 1946. Ora worked as a machinist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was a life long farmer.

Alice Blaser

Alice Blaser, 86, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday, September 3, 2004 at the Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, September 7, 10:30 A.M. at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Rev. Nancy Peebles officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.

Alice Blaser was born icon July 1, 1918 in Duncan, Nebraska to John & Grace (Born) Nyffeler, Sr. Alice attended school at District #8. On January 15, 1941, Alice married Allan Blaser in Columbus. Alice was a homemaker and stayed home to raise her family. Alice was very active in her church and participated in many church circle activities. She was a member of the Peaceful Valley Club and the Swiss Ladies. Alice enjoyed her flowers, sewing, crafts, and spending time with her family.

Marvin Bakenhus

Marvin Bakenhus, 79 of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday, October 29, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev.'s Michael Klatt and Ernest Smith officiating. Interment is in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Columbus, with military honors by The American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 - 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Monday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to the following: Peace Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran Church, or the donor's choice.

Marvin was born icon December 6, 1924 in rural Leigh, Nebraska to William and Frieda (Korte) Bakenhus. He attended District 23 and Christ Lutheran Schools. Marvin served in the US Navy, during World War II in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. New Orleans from April 21, 1943 until January 16, 1946 when he was honorably discharged. He married Hilda Kant on April 20, 1948 at Christ Lutheran Church.
Marvin was a dairy farmer in the Leigh area for a number of years, before moving to Columbus in 1982. From 1991 to 1995, he worked for Columbus Feed & Hatchery. Marvin enjoyed fishing, playing cards, traveling, and delivering Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the American Legion and Peace Lutheran Church.

Harold L. Brandt

Harold L. Brandt, 89, of Madison, Nebraska, formerly of the Humphrey and Creston, Nebraska area, died Friday, October 8, 2004 at the Countryside Home in Madison.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2004, 10:30 A.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 14 miles North of Columbus, with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 11 from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.

Harold L. Brandt was born icon July 21, 1915 to Henry & Mary (Osten) Brandt at home in Monroe, Nebraska. He was baptized August 15, 1915 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monroe and was confirmed May 12, 1929 at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, where he also attended school. On July 28, 1936 he married Alice Margaret Reins of Leigh, Nebraska, in Clarinda, Iowa. This past July they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
He was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church and farmed in the area until his retirement in 1978 when they moved to their home in Columbus. He was recently residing at Countryside Home in Madison, Nebraska.
Harold served as Congregational President, Elder, and a School Board member at St. John's. He was on the school remodeling and the parsonage building committees. Harold also held several offices in the St. John's Lutheran Layman League. He served on the School Board of Platte County School District #49, the Farmers Co-op Board of Directors in Humphrey, Nebraska, the Soil Conservation Board for Platte County, and on the School Re-districting Board for Platte County.

Arlo E. Bakenhus

Arlo E. Bakenhus, 70, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church on Thursday, July 15, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. with Revs. Michael Klatt and Ernest Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Columbus with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 3:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and at Peace Lutheran Church on Thursday, from 9:00 A.M. - 10:00 A.M. with a family prayer service at 9:45 A.M. Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.

Arlo E. Bakenhus was born icon July 30, 1933 in Leigh, Nebraska to William and Freida (Korte) Bakenhus. Arlo attended school in Leigh and graduated from Kramer High School in 1951. On April 29, 1953 Arlo entered the U.S. Marine Corp. and served in the Korean War. He was Honorably Discharged on April 28, 1955.

On September 18, 1955 Arlo married Mary Ann Lange at the Christ Lutheran Church in Rural Columbus. Arlo started the Bakenhus Construction Company. He owned and managed the company until his retirement in 1995. Arlo was a past president of the Columbus Home Builders Association, a member of the VFW, and a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodcarving and spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends.
