Marilyn Williams

COLUMBUS -- Marilyn Jean Williams, 56, of Columbus, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at her home.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Federated Church in Columbus.

Visitation is Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home.

Marilyn Jean Ambrose was born icon May 8, 1951, in Holdrege to Clayle Eugene and Anne (Frisell) Ambrose. She grew up in Gothenburg, McCook and Columbus, graduating from Columbus High School.

She married Craig Williams on January 24, 1969, in Columbus. The couple lived in Columbus all their life, where Marilyn has worked at Hy-Vee for 23 years.

Marilyn is a member of Federated Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren, going to their sporting activities and NASCAR. Marilyn was active in various soccer organizations and kept statistics for Columbus High Girls Soccer for many years

She is survived by her husband, Craig Williams of Columbus; daughters, Chris Wiese of Columbus and Mindy (Jeff) Linden of Gardner, Kan.; mother, Anne McLoughlin of Lincoln; sisters, Jan (Terry) Sprieck and Linda (Dick) Harr, both of Lincoln; mother-in-law, Vera Williams of Fremont; brother-in-law, Jim (Pat) Williams of Irmo, S.C.; sister-in-law Loretta (Gary) Meistrell of Fremont; grandsons, Jake Linden of Gardner, Kan. and Mitch Flash and Josh Flash, both of Columbus; and granddaughter, Maddy Linden of Gardner, Kan.

She is preceded in death by her father, Clayle Eugene Ambrose; stepfather, Jim McLoughlin; father-in-law, Dean Williams; and her grandparents.

Memorials may be directed to Touched by Cancer Foundation at 2905 S. M-291 Frontage Rd, Independence, MO, 64057 or the donor’s choice.

Joseph Eckstein

SCHUYLER -- Joseph D. “Joe” Eckstein 66, of Schuyler died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at the Butler County Health Care Center in David City.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler with the Rev. Laura Hollister officiating.

Visitation will be noon-8 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Kracl Funeral Chapel in Schuyler. Visitation will continue 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Burial will be in the Schuyler Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or the Schuyler Cemetery.

Lunch will be at the First Presbyterian Church Hall.

Joe was born icon March 6, 1942, in Schuyler, to Joseph Cyril and Antoinette (Reznicek) Eckstein. He graduated from Schuyler High School. Joe worked for Johanson Cleaners, Didier Grocery, Parr Furniture, Rydel Lawn and Garden Center, managed the Schuyler Manor for many years and recently worked at the Power Wash Car Wash in Schuyler.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder and two terms as a Deacon. Joe also was very committed to the Schuyler Cemetery where he served on the board since 1978 as Secretary/Treasurer. He received the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award in 1983 and the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award 1993. Joe enjoyed gardening, listening to Czech music and painting ceramics.

He is survived by his sister, Betti and her husband, Leonard Podany of Fremont; two nieces, Denise and her husband, Stan Blair of Granby, Colo., Teresa Podany of Hastings; and one nephew, Mark Podany of Vermillion, S.D.; and four great-nephews and nieces.

Joe was preceded in death by his father in 1948 and his mother in 1996.

Harrison Everett "Shorty" Walters

Harrison Everett "Shorty" Walters, age 94 of Schuyler, died Thursday September 19, 2002, at the Ambassador Care Facility in Lincoln.

Funeral services are Saturday, September 21, 1:30PM, at the First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler. Reverend Dana Stout officiating with burial in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation Saturday from 9AM until noon at the funeral chapel and from 12:30 to 1:30 at the church.

Shorty was born icon July 4, 1908, in Danbury, Nebraska to Marion and Eunice (Townley) Walters. After graduating from Lebonon High School and attending the University of Nebraska, he joined the United States Army , serving in England during WWII. On June 23, 1940, he married Wanda LaVonne Warren in McCook. They operated a bar and grocery store until moving to Schuyler in 1955. They owned and operated the Valley Court Motel. Shorty also worked at the Last Chance Bar, Grubbs Grocery Store and later at the Ordnance Plant in Grand Island. He was a member of the church and the American Legion. He is survived by 2 daughters, Cheryl (Vesi) Maae of Honolulu, Hawaii, Susan (Joel) Engel of Schuyler, one sister, Mary Hawlken of Johnstown, Colorado and his former wife, LaVonne Walters of Schuyler. 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, John and Sam and a sister, Beth Walters.

Robert O. Kohler

Robert O. Kohler, age 77, of Schuyler, died on Thursday, January 16, 2003, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services for Bob were held Monday, January 20th, 2:00PM, at the Kracl Funeral Chapel. Lay Minister Jerry L. Kracl officiating. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery with Military Honors by Hespen-Mitchell Post 4836 of the V.F.W. and McLeod Post #47 of the American Legion. Visitation on Sunday from noon-8PM with the family receiving friends from 4-6PM. There will also be visitation on Monday from noon until time of service.

Bob was born icon March 30, 1925, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Henry and Mabel (Van Housen) Kohler. He served in the United States Navy from June 1, 1944--May 29, 1946. He married Vi Vitamvas on February 14, 1947, in Kansas. Bob spent his entire life in Schuyler and owned and operated Kohler Transfer, with his brother Emerson, from 1939-1982.

He is survived by his wife, Vi, Of Schuyler, one daughter, Sharon (Jim) Huffman of Henderson, Nevada, brother, Emerson (Nadine) Kohler of Schuyler, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Robert H. Kohler in 2000, 2 brothers, Anson and Roy Kohler and a sister, Lucille Higgins.

Lester F. Schindler

Lester F. Schindler, age 78, of Schuyler, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Schuyler. Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 20th at 10:30AM at Kracl Funeral Chapel with Reverend Peter Jark-Swain officiating. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation Sunday from noon-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM. Visitation continues Monday from 8:30AM until time of service.

Lester was born icon on the family farm northwest of Schuyler on May 31, 1924, to Frederick and Laura (Lueke) Schindler. On June 21, 1945, he married Darlene Bohac at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek. He farmed northwest of Schuyler his entire life and also worked at the Excel Plant in Schuyler.

Lester is survived by one son, Ron (Jan) Schindler of North Bend, two daughters, Sandie (Bob) Friesen of Lewellen and Deb (Jess) Kucera of Leigh. 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Darlene in 2002, and one sister, Loretta Klug.

Audrey Anne (Myers) Baker

Audrey Anne (Myers) Baker, age 89, of Schuyler, died Wednesday, December 18th, 2002, at Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler. Funeral services for Audrey were held Saturday,December 21st, with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Reverend Gerald Leise officiating. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday from noon-8PM at the Kracl Funeral Chapel with a 3PM Rosary for the Study Club and 7PM Scripture Service.

Audrey was born icon November 15, 1913, in Wright County, Iowa to Jack and Emma (Matern) Sherman. After graduating from high school she continued her education and worked in St. Louis during WWII as a nurse anesthetist at the Jewish and Missouri Pacific hospitals. After 1946 she lived in Schuyler and worked at both the Schuyler and Columbus hospitals.

On June 24, 1939, she married Dr. H.D. Myers in Minneapolis. Dr. Myers died July 7, 1977. On November 20, 1993, Audrey married Paul Baker at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Schuyler.

Audrey was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Little Flower Altar Society, Civic Club, Book Clubs, Bridge Clubs, Extension Club, was a former Girl Scout Leader, first woman board member of the Schuyler Golf Club, first woman lector at the church, Secretary of the Diocesan Committee and was in charge of lectors at the church.

Audrey is survived by her husband Paul of Schuyler, one daughter, Marilyn (Dr. Robert) Laugen, of Spokane, Washington, 2 brothers, Carney (Kathleen) Sherman and Gerald (Mildred) Sherman, all of Fort Dodge, Iowa. 3 grandchildren, R. Todd (Zoe) Laugen, Boulder, Colorado, Annie (Michael) Laugen Murray, Chicago, Illinois and Christian M. Laugen of Seattle, Washington. 2 great-grandchildren, Evan G. Laugen and R. Trevor Laugen, and 3 step-daughters, Susan Sundeen of Schuyler, Barbara (Robert) Woodruff, York, Nebraska and Nan (Dwight) Miller of Sheridan, Wyoming, and 3 step-grandchildren, Blake, Chase and Sydney Woodruff.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, son Ron Myers in 1968, and six sisters, Sister Edmund, Ethel Connor, Edna Sherman, June Benedict, Doris Sherman and Rita Sherman.

It was Audrey's wish that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to St. Augustine Catholic Church or the Columbus Area Hospice.

Miriam L. Welton

Miriam L. Welton, age 81, of Wilburton, Okalahoma, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at the Latimer County Nursing Home in Wilburton. Funeral services for Miriam were held Tuesday, 2PM in the Kracl Funeral Chapel. Lay Minister Jerry L. Kracl officiating with burial in the Edholm Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday from 10AM until time of service.

Miriam was born icon February 22, 1921, in Butler County Nebraska to Frank B. and Maude (Hahn) Davenport. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wilburton and a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Nancy (Neal) Wood of Wilburton, Oklahoma, Sally (Michael) Foisey of Omaha, 2 cousins, Bob (Connie) Davenport and Nadine (Emerson) Kohler of Schuyler, granddaughter Wendy Wood of Wilburton and 2 grandsons, Trevor Wood of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Adam Foisey of Shellknob, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne Welton, daughter, Suzanne Welton and brother, Arlo Davenport.

Martin R. Shonka

Martin R. Shonka, age 76, of Schuyler, died Friday, October 4th at his home. Funeral Servcies for Martin were held Tuesday,October 8th, 10:30AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler. Reverend Gerald Leise officiating. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery with Military Graveside Services by Hespen-Mitchell Post 4836 of the V.F.W. and McLeod Post #47 of the American Legion. The United States Marine Corps Burial Detail will also participate. Visitation was held from noon-5:30PM on Monday at the Kracl Funeral Chapel and from 6-8PM at the church. There will be a combined Rosary Service for the Parish and Knights of Columbus, at 7:30PM. Visitation continued Tuesday morning from 8:30--10:15, at the funeral chapel.

Martin was born icon June 2, 1926 in Schuyler to Robert W. and Clara (Jonas) Shonka. He served in the United States Marine Corps in China from 1945-1946. He farmed near Schuyler for nearly 40 years and was a Pork Producer. He worked at Wagner Mills, Schuyler Coop, owned and operated Four Seasons Lawn Service and was recently a courier for First National Bank of Schuyler. Martin was past President of the Placo Pork Producers, member of NFO, Past Commander of the American Legion, member of the Knights of Columbus, Former Grand Knight and 4th Degree Knight, Schuyler VFW, Last Man's Club, the 40&8 and Schuyler Rotary. On January 8, 1988, he married Elva "Jean" Finley in Columbus and lived in Schuyler until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Jean of Schuyler, a daughter, Marta (Bim) Gilson of Schuyler, son Doug (Michelle) Shonka of Savage, Minnesota, 2 sisters, Katie Havelka of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Roberta (Dr. Robert) Ortwein of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, nieces and nephews as well as 4 step-children, Linda (Mike) Follmer of Grand Island, Jim Finley of Hastings, Steve Finley, Idyllwild, California and Chris (Kurt) Bogus of Millard. Six grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Danny in 1968 and brother-in-law Smokey Havelka. Family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or St. Marys' Catholic Church in Schuyler.

Ella Hamata

Ella Hamata, age 85, of Schuyler, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at the Beverly Health Care Center in Schuyler. Funeral Service Saturday, April 12, 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schuyler. Reverend Tom Hallowell officiating with burial in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation Friday from noon-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM, at Kracl Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to services Saturday, at the church.

Ella was born icon March 1, 1918, in Millerton, Nebraska to August and Ruth (Fadschild) Ladwig. She married Hector DeBaets January 2, 1940, in Seward. He died October 7, 1947. On January 14, 1965, she married Frank Hamata in Seward. Frank died December 21, 1991. Ella lived in Schuyler and worked at Gaeth Produce and Hatchery, Dubsky IGA and Grubbs Food Store. She was a member of the church, the church quilting group and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed cooking and making homemade noodles.

Ella is survived by one son, Larry (Carolyn) DeBaets of Marian, Iowa, two daughters, Doris Ann Ahrens of Schuyler and Donna Eilers of Fremont, one sister, Lucille Burkholder of Schuyler, 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.

Agnes L. Jonas

Agnes L. Jonas, age 90, 0f Schuyler, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler. Her sister, Martha C. Balak, age 93, of Clarkson, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler. Funeral services Saturday, April 5th, 10:30 AM, St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Schuyler. Reverend Gerald Leise, Monsignor Andrew Meister and Reverend Mr.Marvin Capoun officiating. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation Friday from noon-8PM. Study Club Rosary 3PM and Knights of Columbus and Parish Rosary, 7:30, all at the funeral chapel. Visitation Saturday morning 8:30-10:00, also at the chapel.

Agnes was born icon June 5, 1912, in the Heun area of Colfax County to Albert and Mary (Brichacek)Lodl. She grew up in Howells and graduated from Howells High School in 1929. She worked as a beautician in Howells until 1936. She married Lambert Jonas November 9, 1936 at St. John's Catholic Church in Howells. They made their home in Schuyler. She worked as a receptionist for Dr. H. D. Myers from 1964-1977.

Agnes was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church, a charter member of Our Lady of Fatima Study Club and was active in the Altar Society at the church. She also was involved in Extension Club and Bridge Club. She has been a resident of the Extended Care Unit of Alegent Health since September 28, 2001.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary (James) Kracl of Schuyler, one son, Tom (Mary) Jonas of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sister, Martha Balak of Clarkson and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lambert Jonas November 19, 1995 and a sister, Marie Glazier.

Martha was born icon July 29, 1909, in the rural Heun area to Albert and Mary (Brichacek) Lodl. She graduated from Howells High School and attended Wayne State College. On September 16, 1933, Martha married William John Balak at St. John's Catholic Church in Howells. They lived in Howells, Clarkson, Hastings and moved to Schuyler in 1945. She taught school for a short time, worked for many years as a cook at Schuyler High School, worked at the Schuyler Library and loved to volunteer at the Schuyler Senior Center. She was a member of the church, the Study Club, Little Flower Altar Society, PTA, Civic Club and was a Gray Lady at Schuyler Memorial Hospital.

Martha is survived by two sons, William (Carol) Balak of Omaha and Samuel J. (Sheri) Balak, of Schuyler and 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 17, 1966,and two sisters, Marie Glazier and Agnes Jonas.

Libbie Kucera

Libbie Kucera, age 89, of Bellwood, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the Birchwood Manor in North Bend. Funeral Service Saturday, 10:00 AM in the Kracl Funeral Chapel. Lay Minister Jerry L. Kracl officiating. Burial in the Linwood Hill Cemetery. Visitation Friday from noon-8PM, and Saturday morning 8:30-10:00.

Libbie was born icon September 28, 1913, in Morse Bluff, Nebraska to Joseph and Katerina (Kohout) Bobek. She attended school at District 77 in Saunders County. On February 22, 1938, she married Leo Kucera in Clarkson. They farmed in the Linwood, Bruno, Abie and Bellwood areas. She was a homemaker and a member of the ZCBJ Lodge of Morse Bluff.

Libbie is survived by one son, Dennis (Eileen) Kucera of Bellwood, one daughter, Ruby Wesely of Cedar Bluffs, son-in-law Richard Schutt of Omaha, 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 9 step-greatgrandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter-Darlene Schutt, grandson-Daniel Kucera. brother George Bobek, sister Josie Semrad, and 2 sons-in-law, LeRoy Matthies and Eugene Wesely.

Lillian P. Shuster

Lillian P. Shuster, age 93, of Schuyler, died Friday March 14, 2003, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral Service Tuesday, March 18th, 11:00 A.M. at the Kracl Funeral Chapel in Schuyler. Lay Minister Jerry L. Kracl officiating. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation Monday from noon-8PM with family present from 6-8PM, and Tuesday from 9AM until time of service.

Lillian was born icon may 15, 1909 in Clarkson, Nebraska to Rudolph and Pauline (Klinsky) Hobza. On May 20, 1926,she married Harvey E. Shuster in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She lived most of her life in the Schuyler area and was a homemaker. She also worked at Dale Electronics for several years.

She is survived by one son, Harvey (Julie) Shuster, of Blair, two daughters, Lillian (Donald) Balmer of Lincoln, and Margaret (Robert) Kirchoff, of Fort Myers, Florida. Two sisters, Mildred Wendt and Ruth Callies, both of Leigh and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Hobza of Leigh and Libbey Hobza of Clarkson. 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962, daughter, Phyllis Koci, son and daughter-in-law Rudy and Donna Shuster, 2 brothers, Rudy and Bohous Hobza and a great-granddaughter, Christine Turner.

Arlene Dorothy Poulas

Arlene Dorothy Poulas, age 82, of Schuyler, died Thursday, February 27, 2003, at the Extended Care Unit of Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler. Funeral services, Saturday, March 1, 11:00 A.M. in the Kracl Funeral Chapel. Burial in the Schuyler Cemetery.

Arlene was born icon February 9, 1921, in Schuyler to Charles and Gusta (Mensik) Vanicek. She graduated from the 8th grade at District #61 in Colfax County. On February 21, 1944, she married John Poulas in the manse of the Presbyterian Church in Clarkson. They farmed 10 miles north of Schuyler and moved to Schuyler in 1976.

She is survived by several cousins and her many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
