Clarence W. (Ted) Brohman

Clarence W. (Ted) Brohman, 93, of Arnold, Neb., died July 30, 2003 at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow, Neb.

Clarence Wendell Brohman was born icon on a farm seven miles north of Clarks, Neb., near Prairie Creek, on July 29, 1910, to Joseph Francis and Amelia Louise (Dickman) Brohman.

The family resided in and around Clarks until 1921, when they moved to a farm northeast of Callaway on Rhyno Table, where he continued his education.

Ted was the oldest of four children, Harold (Pete), Helen (CoonStreet) and Isabell (Toots) Chad. Upon a confining injury to his father in 1925, he took charge of running the farm until his marriage to Mabel Goldie Gross on December 19, 1930 in Broken Bow.

They resided in and around Arnold and Callaway. To this union was born icon one son, Larry. Ted drove a school bus for 25 years. After a stroke resulting in lingering complications, Mabel died July 5, 1990.

In April of 1995, Ted married Teresa Nielsen in North Platte, Neb., where they resided until her death on February 24, 1998. At this time, he returned to Arnold.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Marilyn; his only grandson, Travis; and one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Louise of Broken Bow. In addition, he leaves to mourn two stepsons and their wives, Melvin and Liz Nielsen of Omaha, Neb. and Micheal and Lynn Nielsen of Charlotte, N.C., and nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his two wives.

Service were held at the United Methodist Church in Arnold on August 2, 2003 with the Reverend Doug Smith officiating. Burial was in the Arnold Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.

Arnold Funeral Home of Arnold, Neb. was in charge of arrangements.

Alma Bowers

Alma L. Bowers, 93, Arnold, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.

E. Irene Tarleton

E. Irene Tarleton, 82, formerly of Sargent, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2003 at Jennie M Melham Memorial Hospital in Broken Bow, Nebraska.

Born February 15, 1921 in rural Custer County, Irene was the daughter of Kem and Maud Wolf Hatch. She was a graduate of Broken Bow High School.

On July 20, 1942, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Irene was united in marriage to Hubert Tarleton of the Walworth community. Following World War II, they lived and farmed in the Walworth areas.

After her children grew up, Mrs. Tarleton worked for Farmers Co-op in Sargent for several years.

In 1976, the couple retired and moved from the farm to Sargent. For many years, they spent winters in Scottsdale, Arizona. They had recently moved from Sargent to Broken Bow.

Mrs. Tarleton was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sargent and was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary. Her greatest joy was in caring for her family and doting on her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Hubert, of Broken Bow; daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia and Larry Link of Harlan, Iowa and Janice and Richard Buroughs of Gretna, Nebraska; sons and daughter-in-law, Gary and Susan Tarleton of Corvallis, Oregon and Thomas Tarleton of Santa Barbara, California; brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Mary Sue Hatch of Omaha; one grandson and wife; two granddaughters and husbands; and one great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Tarleton was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pauline Skinner; and an infant daughter, Nancy.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church of Sargent or the donor's choice.

Funeral services were held September 25 at Sargent United Methodist Church, with Pastor Vonnie Phillips officiating. Music was provided by Pastor Don Schauda.

Burial followed at West Union Cemetery.

Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent was in charge of arrangements.

Martin Leonard Minton

Martin Leonard Minton, age 29, of Broken Bow, Nebraska died Friday, October 24, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Martin was born icon to Charles and Brenda Minton on July 4, 1974, at the Women's Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended elementary school at Myrtle Tate. He attended Brouen Junior High and graduated from Indian Springs High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Martin furthered his education by attending Vo Tech Culinary Arts Institute in Las Vegas, graduating in 1992 with honors. He continued his culinary practice working at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

In 1997, Martin assisted in opening the Cello Restaurant in New York. From there, he moved to Lanai, Hawaii, where he worked for a year and a half. Martin then moved to Wailea, Hawaii and worked for the Grand Wailea Resort as an executive chef.

In September of 2001, Martin moved back to Merna, Nebraska where he made his home until meeting Teresa Barta in December of 2002. Martin went to work for McDonald's Corporation in February of 2003.

Martin and Teresa were united in marriage on June 4, 2003. They made their home in Broken Bow, Nebraska until the time of his death on October 24, 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa, of Broken Bow; parents, Charles and Brenda of Merna; a brother, Michael of Kreebs, Oklahoma; grandparents, Joe and Jenny Lindner of Mesa, Arizona; five stepchildren, Eric and Jaime Steinke of Bellevue, Nebraska, Brandon Blake of Kearney, Nebraska, Kimberly Blake and James and Jordan Barta all of Broken Bow; two stepgrandchildren, Timothy Steinke of Bellevue and Bradley Blake of Broken Bow; parents-in-law, Connie and Lyle Stewart of Broken Bow; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Jo and Mark Huntley of Cozad, Nebraska, Deborah and David Cornelius of Lincoln, Nebraska, James and Alonda Smith of Augusta, Georgia, Rick and Beth Smith of Kearney, Nebraska and Douglas Smith of Broken Bow.

Martin was preceded in death by his grandmother, Betty Ault Lindner; a grandfather, Leonard Å. Minton; a half brother, Jimmy Melton Clark; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were held Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow, with Father Todd Phillipsen officiating.

Music was furnished by pianist Mary Yarrington and soloist, Sister Bernita Hessling.

Casket bearers were Mel Valenzuela, David Cornelius, Mark Huntley, Henry Lindner, Eric Stewart and Colin Stewart.

Honorary casket bearers were McDonald's personnel.

Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Broken Bow.

Govier Brothers Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Dale Davis

Donald Dale Davis, age 81, of Taylor, Neb. passed away at home on Nov. 26, 2003. Donald Dale was born icon Mar. 23, 1922 to Freeman and Gladys (Pike) Davis at Long Pine, Neb., the oldest of five children.

Don attended District 72 Ewing until the 7th grade and finished 8th grade at Tucker school. Don received his high school education at Rock County High in Bassett, Neb. where he participated in football, basketball, track, and in the Golden Gloves Boxing program. Don graduated with the class of 1939. Upon graduation, Don moved to the Scottsbluff area where he worked on the Burlington Railroad, on a beet run, as a fireman.

Don enlisted in the Navy in November of 1942, where he proudly served his country as a gunner's mate on a merchant marine ship during World War II. Don was discharged in December of 1945. He gained faith in the Lord while serving his country and continued this faith until death. After his discharge, Don moved back to his parents' ranch at Rose, Neb.

On June 1, 1946, Don married Margaret Ellen Dilsaver of Taylor, Neb. during a double ceremony with Harold and Geneva Davis in Valentine, Neb. Don and Margaret moved to her parents' place west of Taylor in the Madison Square community and helped on the ranch.

In March of 1947, Don and Margaret purchased the Hubbard place, where they still reside.

To this union were born icon two children, Rex Lee and Donna Rea. Don and Margaret celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996. They had celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this last June. Don loved his wife and family and enjoyed all family gatherings to visit and play cards. Don enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's school activities and, after they all graduated, continued to attend the local school's activities. He enjoyed reading history, western novels, watching sports on television, and a good friendly game of cards.

Don and Margaret began raising Black Angus cattle. Don took great pride in his cattle, working with horses, and being a good steward of the land. He practiced good range management, planted many shelterbelts and worked very hard on genetics to upgrade his cattle.

In the early years, Don and his brother-in-law, A. W. Dilsaver, worked together, shared equipment and hired men to get their respective ranches going. Don loved to attend the Burwell Livestock Auction to visit with neighbors and look at their livestock. Don enjoyed the many historical tours and looked forward to them each year. In the later years, he spent many enjoyable days at the Burwell Senior Center. Don was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He served on the Conservation Board and the Telephone Board for many years. Don was a great supporter of the 4-H and FFA programs.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Doris, of North Platte; daughter, Donna, of Dunning; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lyle and Pauline of Bassett and Lawrence and Teena of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and Dale Caskery of Bassett and Lois and Ivan Stewart of Valentine; six grandchildren, Stacey Spencer of Phoenix, Ariz., Kendra and Chris Tordrup of Eustis, Neb., Michaela and Brandon Keith of Sargent, Neb., Brett Spencer of Brewster, Neb., Justin Davis of Kearney, Neb., Ashley Spencer of Broken Bow, Neb.; and three great-grandchildren, Monica and Shelby Keith and Wade Scriptor.

Services were held Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent, Neb. with Don Studley officiating. Music was provided by Kathy Fowler and Kent Lewis.

Pallbearers were Justin Davis, Brett Spencer, Chris Tordrup, Brandon Keith, John Dilsaver and John Schroder.

Honorary pallbearers were Ted Cole, John Hyde, John Rush, Bob Kraus, David Hyde, Melvin Hyde, David Henry, Jack Harris, Joyce Dowse, Claude Croft, Gerald Larson, and Elmer Swanson.

Interment was in the Madison Square Cemetery in Loup County, with military graveside services.

Rhoad Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elva Vanek, 85
January 20, 2011

Elva May Vanek, age 85, of Sargent, died Jan. 7, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services were Jan. 12, 2011, at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial will be at the West Lawn Memorial Cemetery and Mausoleum in Eugene, Ore.

Elva was born icon Feb. 27, 1925, in Sargent, to Noel and Minnie (Drapper) Amos. She attended school and graduated from Sargent High School in 1942.

Elva married Charles Vanek. Charles died in 1982. Elva enjoyed gardening, collecting dolls, and spending hours working in her yard.

Elva Vanek is survived by her brother, Larry Amos of Oregon; sister, Delores Kuma of Ord; sister-in-law, Ella Jane Amos of Sargent, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; brothers, Alvin and Wilber; sister, Etta Jane; and two sons, Terry and Rodney.

Marjorie Oxford

Marjorie Oxford, age 79, of Broken Bow, Neb. died Nov. 24, 2003 at Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Marjorie Edna Glendy was born icon April 16, 1924 to Ed and Lela Glendy on a farm ten miles north of Oconto, Neb. She attended grade school at Happy Hill and two years of high school at Ryno Table.

On April 26, 1939, she married Laurence Wilburn Oxford at Taylor, Neb. After their marriage, they farmed south of Broken Bow in Custer County.

They retired from farming in 1978, moving into Oconto, Neb. They always enjoyed their neighbors in every community they lived in. In 1994, they moved to Sargent, Neb. and in 2002, Marjorie moved to Off Broadway in Broken Bow.

During her life, Marjorie enjoyed many things. Among her favorites were playing the piano for sing-alongs, crocheting, playing cards, writing poetry and fishing. She always had stories to tell about "back then".

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Earla Oxford of Burwell, Neb., Eddie and Vicki Oxford of Sargent, and Clayton and Julie Oxford of Albany, Ky.; one daughter and son-in-law, Farrall and Gary Fitch of Grand Island, Neb.; eight grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons; her parents; two sisters; and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Rev. Keith Williams officiating.

Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Oconto Community Center.

Govier Brothers Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
