Harvey J. Foley

Harvey J. Foley, age 62, of Merna died Friday, Nov. 28 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney after a short illness.

Harvey was born icon January 30, 1941 at Broken Bow to Daniel and Elsie (Whiteman) Foley. He attended grade school at Sunshine Country School and graduated from Merna High School in 1959. Harvey served four years in the United States Air Force and returned to Nebraska in 1965. Harvey was engaged in farming, ranching and carpentry work.

In 1983, Harvey was married to Dee Adams of Merna. Three children, Shane, Bridget and Kelsey, were born icon to this union.

Harvey was an active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church at Merna. He was a good neighbor, always willing to lend a hand to his church, friends and neighbors. His favorite pastime was attending auctions.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Dee, and his children, Shane, Bridget and Kelsey, all of Merna; one brother, Ed Foley of Kearney; three sisters, Veronica Foley of Denver, Colo., Nellie Jane Moles of Amherst, N.H., and Dianna Kuszak of St. Paul, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo with Father Todd Philipsen officiating. Burial was in the Dale Catholic Cemetery west of Merna.

Govier Brothers Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Laurence Owen Price

Laurence Owen Price was born icon Mar. 2, 1919 in Berwyn, Neb. to Ray and Bula (Brisbin) Price. He passed away Nov. 22, 2003 in McMinn-ville, Ore.

Laurence was raised and schooled in Nebraska. After high school, he went to work in farming for two years.

He joined the Army in 1941 and served in the European Theatre. After the service, he returned to Berwyn to the family farm.

On Feb. 23, 1946, Laurence married Jane Howell in Fairmont, Minn. In 1954, they moved to Kirkland, Wash. and he worked for Boeing for five years.

They moved to Hoodriver, Ore. and he worked for the school district. In 1985, they moved to McMinnville, Ore.

Laurence was a member of the United Methodist Church of McMinnville.

He enjoyed raising animals, gardening and out-of-doors.

Laurence is survived by his wife, Jane; three sons, Larry of Bend, Ore., Terry of McMinnville, and Dennis of LaGrande, Ore.; sisters, Pearl Loy of Broken Bow, Neb. and Doris Chelewski of Rifle, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and his parents.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 in the United Methodist Church in McMinnville.

Interment was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Macy & Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Carl L. Schneidereit

Carl L. Schneidereit, age 77, of Brewster died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at his home near Brewster.

Carl Louis Schneidereit was born icon Oct. 30, 1926 near Ainsworth to Louis F. and Marie (Chrust) Schneidereit. Carl grew up in the German Valley Community north of Brewster.

On June 3, 1956, Carl was married to Roberta Neben at the First Lutheran Church in the Buffalo Community north of Lexington. Carl spent his entire life in the German Valley Community where he ranched and had dairy cattle. Carl was very gifted in creating sculptures and metal work. He was also a skilled mechanic.

Roberta died on June 3, 2001.

After Roberta's death, Carl continued to live in the German Valley Community. On June 19, 2002, Carl was married to Jeanette Stevens in the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

Carl is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Brewster; one son, Ivan Schneidereit of Brewster; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Reniece and Joel Shult and son, Daniel of Nicollet, Minn., Janine and Joe Roye and son, James Cole Roye, of Alford, Fla., Brenda and Daryl Oster of Crystal River, Fla., Karma Schneidereit of Omaha, Clarinda and Bill Marty of Olathe, Kans.; and three sisters, Elaine Martelle of Kearney, Elsie Hughes of Lincoln, and Esther Zeigler of Ainsworth.

Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Roberta (Neben) Schneidereit.

Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN EMERSON, 99

John Edward Emerson, 99, was born icon February 21, 1914 in Custer County near Comstock, Neb., to Edward and Melissa (Irwin) Emerson. He passed away Nov. 23, 2003.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Agnes; children, Duane and wife, Connie, Merry and husband, Warren Snodgrass, and Arthur and wife, Chris; his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Nov. 26, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth with Reverend Galen Wray officiating. Interment was in the Ainsworth Cemetery.

Hoch Funeral Home of Ainsworth was in charge of arrangements.

Bethany June Barefield

Bethany June Barefield of Madison, Ala., was killed in an automobile accident near Huntsville, Ala. Dec. 22, 2003 at the age of 16.

Funeral services were Dec. 24, 2003 at Capshaw Baptist Church, Capshaw, Ala.

Bethany was born icon March 13, 1987, in the Noble Army Hospital at Fort McClellan, Ala. She attended elementary school at Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley, Kan., Wuerzburg, Germany, Harker Heights, Texas, and Madison, Ala. She attended Sparkman High School in Madison, Ala.

She was a member of the girls JV Volleyball team and choir. She was active in her church at Capshaw Baptist participating in the youth group and mission projects. She will always be remembered for her disarming ever-present smile, outgoing personality, love for others, and her unique laugh.

Bethany's pervasive zeal for life and her daily walk with Jesus; her Savior, serves as an example to us all. Her compassion for those in need and her friendship and understanding to those close to her will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Jan (Albin) Barefield of Madison, Ala.; her sister, Rebekah Barefield; and grandparents, Don Albin of Broken Bow; and Ms. Lillian Barefield of Ozark, Ala. Other relatives are Roger and Carlene Albin of Broken Bow, Ron Horton of Ft. Worth, Texas and James and Renee Albin of Norfolk. She was preceded in death by her namesake, granny June Albin, and her grampa, Ray Barefield. The family would like to invite everyone to view pictures of a video tribute of Bethany that was shown as part of the funeral services by going to www.cbsm.net (Capshaw Baptist Student Ministries).

Doctor Leon Donald (Lon) Cunningham

Doctor Leon Donald (Lon) Cunningham was born icon Aug. 23, 1940, in Loup City, to Lester (Babe) Cunningham and Gwendolyn (Gwen) Cunningham. He passed away Jan. 21 , 2004 in his home in Colorado Springs, Colo. at the age of 63. Memorial services will be today, Jan. 29, at First Presbyterian Church, 219 East Bijou Street, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Lon grew up in Ansley, attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the University of Nebraska School of Medicine in Omaha. He interned at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln. He served as flight surgeon in the United States Air Force and was in general practice in Buffalo, Wyo. Lon completed his residency in Dermatology at the University of Iowa School of Medicine in Iowa City and came to Colorado Springs in 1974 to practice dermatology with Doctor Larry Cole at the Colorado Springs Dermatology Clinic and in Pueblo until his retirement in 2001. Lon was a member of the EI Paso County Medical Society and served as president in 1988-89. He was also a member of the Colorado Medical Society, Colorado Springs Dermatology Society, Colorado Dermatology Society, American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and American Medical Association.

Lon married Sharon Bartlett June 17, 1962. Lon and Sharon raised three children, Andy Cunningham, Ann Cunningham Smith and James Cunningham. Lon's great love of the outdoors was passed on to his family.

His passion was fishing and he found pleasure in teaching others to fish. He loved Nebraska football, played a mean game of poker, and rarely lost a bet. Lon was destined to be a caregiver and followed that path through life. He was dedicated to the old fashioned practice of medicine. Friends and family were important to him. His sense of humor, his tall tales, his generosity, and his caring will be remembered fondly by all those he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Babe and Gwen Cunningham. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, Andrew Scott Cunningham and wife, Cinda; Ann Cunningham Smith and her husband, Tim; and James Cunningham and his wife Kristin; grandchildren Shelby and Andie Kay Cunningham and Elizabeth and Michael Smith.

Forrest Blauvelt

Forrest Blauvelt, 92, of Thedford died Jan. 24, 2004, at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen. Funeral services were Jan. 27, 2004 at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Thedford. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Thedford. Forrest Earl Blauvelt was born icon Feb. 17, 1911, in Alexandria. He moved as an infant with his parents, Leslie and Ethel (Woods) Blauvelt to a homestead six miles southwest of Thedford, which belonged to his grandfather Sylvester. One had to live on a homestead three years before you could claim ownership. He graduated from Thomas County High School. As a youngster, Forrest helped his father drive hogs (50 sows at a time) and cattle into Thedford where they were loaded onto a train and shipped to Omaha.

In 1930, Forrest married Ruth Harrell. They lived one mile west of Thedford on the O'Dell place, now belonging to Noah Nutter. After one year they moved seven miles west of Thedford to Norway and settled on the Harrell homestead. Forrest built his first house without plumbing, running water or electricity. He bought their first car, a 1924 Ford.

To this union two children were born. Forrest ranched and worked on the Burlington Railroad until 1955 when he moved into Thedford and built their home and a house on either side of theirs.

Forrest built many homes in and around Thedford, Brownlee, Stapleton, Mullen, Seneca, and Purdum along with his good friend John Armstrong.

Yearning for a break from the Sandhills, Forrest and Ruth moved to Rawlins, Wyo. where he became a union carpenter. They loved the mountains and fishing in the streams. Later he bought a camper and a boat. He enjoyed many fishing trips with Ruth and his grandchildren. He taught each of them how to catch fish and cook them over an open fire.

Forrest also was the city umpire for many ballgames during the 50's and 60's. He loved to travel. One of the highlights was his mission's trip to Panama, Central America. He supervised building a church and taught a local Panamanian boy the art of laying cement blocks. As he was leaving Panama he gave all his tools to the boy.

Forrest and Ruth flew to Alaska on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Time was spent catching many large halibut.

Forrest received Jesus Christ as his personal savior in 1928 and became a charter member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Thedford. He served on the church board and used his carpenter skills to keep the church in good repair.

Forrest was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include: Ruth, wife of 73 years (married Nov. 9, 1930 in Mullen); two children, Melvin (JoAnne) Blauvelt of Thedford and Eleanor (Vern) Gillett of Lincoln; six grandchildren, Doug Blauvelt, Elaine Kramcha, Dave Blauvelt, Blaine Gillett, Jonae Jacks, and Janelle Nosal; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Greta Madron, 94, of Twin Falls, Idaho and Mildred Bunner, 91, of Starkville, Miss.; two brothers, Keith, 89, of Thedford and Eldon, 85, of Casper, Wyo. Many nieces, nephews and special friends.

This Family Is Blessed By Longevity.

Memorials are suggested to the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen or the NE/Bethel Assembly of God Church in Thedford.

Tommy J. Loughran

Tommy J. Loughran, 87, of Anselmo died Mar. 27, 2004, at the Callaway District Hospital. Funeral services were Mar. 31, at Govier Brothers Chapel with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Interment was in the Gates Cemetery.

Tommy James Loughran was born icon Nov. 9, 1916, at Milburn to Michael and Edna (Leep) Loughran. He graduated from Milburn High School in 1937. On June 2, 1941, he married Catherine (Kate) Zeigler. Tommy and Kate have lived on the Loughran Homestead for 61 years, and they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in June of 2003. Tommy's greatest loves, besides his family, were his land and the raising of registered Quarter Horses. He was a lifetime member of the Broken Bow Elk's Club, served on the Gates School Board, volunteered as the Gates basketball coach for many years, and participated in area rodeos all his life. In 1976 the Loughran Homestead was honored by AkSarBen for being 100 years old.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; three sister and their husbands; Rose and Rudy Pohlreich, Iris and Emil Mannel and Ruth and Bob Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Kate, three sons, Allan (Jolene) of Sterling, Colo.; Mick (Ellen) of Hastings; Randy (Janet) of Broken Bow; two daughters, Joan (Jerry) Rush of Cozad, and Sue (Don) Schauda of Milburn; 17 grandchildren; Jeff Loughran, Teresa Gilligan, Christina Brakeman, Matt (Misti) Loughran, Jodi (Steve) Hirsch, Jamie (Stephanie) Rush, Jarod (Nicole) Rush, Troy (LuAnn) Schauda, Travis (Amy) Schauda, Tauni Sue Schauda, Todd (Mandi) Loughran, Amy (Marty) Ramsey, Jessica Loughran, Katie Jo Loughran; stepgrandchildren, Ty (Sherry) Penfold, Troy (Stephanie) Penfold and Shane Freeman; great-grandchildren Jeremy and Daniel Loughran, Heather, Justin and Antonia Gilligan, Brittani, Chelsey and Chad Hirsch, Jacob and Sadie Rush, Jordan and Jack Rush, Lindsay Schauda; step-great-grandchildren, Justine, Travis, Kori and Jadin Penfold; great-great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hanna Rowland.

Memorials are suggested to the Callaway District Hospital or the Gates Cemetery Association.

Dennis Hopkins

Dennis Hopkins, 55, of Ravenna, died Mar. 26, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. A memorial service will be April 1, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Gary Schulte will officiate.

Dennis was born icon Aug. 14, 1948, in Pendleton, Ore., to Clifford and Lorraine (Geist) Rayno. He was adopted at the age of eight by his stepfather Dale Hopkins.

Survivors of the immediate family include wife; Sherry of Ravenna; one son and daughter-in-law, Tech. Sgt. Scott and Lisa Hopkins of Wichita Falls, Texas, one daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Scott Pierce of Grand Island; four grandsons, Airman First Class Brian "Joe" Hopkins of Keesler AFB, MS, Austin and Colton Hopkins and Brandon Pierce; his dog Abby; and one brother Clinton Hopkins. Dennis graduated from Doniphan High School in 1966 and later attended UNK for two years.

He married Sherry Shultz July 15, 1967, in Grand Island. They lived in New Mexico before returning to Ravenna in 1979. Dennis was employed at the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island for two years. He then went into sales for Ulry-Talbert & the Thompson Company grocery wholesales. He later worked for General Tobacco and Candy as a salesman until 1993 when he retired due to ill health.

Dennis was a devoted husband and proud father to his loving children. He enjoyed being a member of the Nebraska Rod and Custom Association of which he was an avid Hot Rod enthusiast. He will be remembered for his humor, his love of Nebraska Football and his willingness to help someone in need.

Preceded in death by father, mother and stepfather.
