Donald A. Dishman

Don was born icon Feb. 6, 1932, in Blaine County to Archie and Bessa (Godfrey) Dishman. Don was the fourth of six children and was nick-named 'Boone,' a name that he went by his whole life. They were a close-knit family and lived in a two-room sod house during Don's early years near Dunning.

The Dishman's later moved to a cattle ranch 10 miles north of Brewster. Some of his happiest times were horseback riding through the Sandhills. His first horse, Squaw, was acquired when he was 7-years-old.

Don attended Brewster High School, graduating as valedictorian of his class, lettering in basketball and receiving other numerous awards.

Don served in the Navy aboard USS Renshaw from 1952-1956 during the Korean conflict.

Don married his love, Mina Ree Martindale, April 20, 1955, in Loveland, Colo. He graduated from Union College in Lincoln, with a bachelor of science degree in theology. He accepted a position with United Medical Laboratories and moved to Kansas City, Kan., in 1966. In 1968 he took a position with Narco Medical and was there until his retirement in 1999. Sales was Don's 'nitch' and it was not work, but a pleasure to him. He enjoyed calling on his customers and could communicate with everyone from the president to the janitor.

When Don and Mina retired, they formed D and M Medical Company and planned to work together and enjoyed traveling with their children, family, and friends. In June 2002, all their plans changed when Don became ill.

Don passed away June 29, 2004. Services were held at the Maple Hill Funeral Home in Kansas City July 2, with internment at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions were given to the Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Don's positive and courageous attitude gave everyone hope and he was an inspiration to all.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bob.

He is survived by his wife, Mina, his sons, Douglas Dishman, Donald Dishman, and daughter Debra Kipper; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother Dale Dishman and sisters, Fona Hall, Naomi Johnston, and Norma Davis.

Leo LaVerne Templin

Leo LaVerne Templin departed this life July 22, 2004. Leo was a victim of Parkinson's Disease which contributed to his death. Funeral services were held in Sacramento, Calif., July 27, Final interment was held at East Lawn Sierra Hills Cemetery.

Leo was born icon on a farm south of Mason City Dec. 6, 1920. He and his wife, Eunice, were married 58 years.

Leo served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He and his wife spent the early years of their marriage in Ansley.

In 1956, the family moved to Auburn, Calif. They later moved to Sacramento, Calif., where he was employed in retail lumber. After retirement the couple returned to Auburn where he was living at the time of his death.

Besides his wife Eunice, Leo is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Dennis Lyons of Weimar, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Templin of Antelope, Calif., and a brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Elaine Templin of Minneapolis, Minn. He leaves five grandchildren: Jonathan Templin of Champaign, Ill. and his wife Sara, Jennifer Templin and Jane Templin, both of Antelope, Calif., Tiah Norton Reppas of San Diego, Calif. and her husband, Art, and Alexus Lyons of Weimer. He also leaves eight nephews, four nieces and their families.

Leo was preceded in death by his son, Lynn, and brother Martin.

East Lawn Mortuary in Sacramento, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Lillie H. Volzke

Lillie H. Volzke, age 96, died July 16, 2004, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services were July 21, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kathy LaRocque officiating. Interment was at the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Lillie Helen Volzke was born icon March 15, 1908, in Hooker County to Steve and Florence (Maupin) Ham. She received her education at Mullen, graduating from Mullen High School. She then attended Nebraska Weslyan University at Lincoln.

She married Emil Volzke in 1931. They made their home at Broken Bow. Lillie worked as a teacher and worked at Brown McDonald Dept. Store and the Corner Style Shop for several years. Mr. Volzke passed away Nov. 8, 1966.

Lillie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO, Eastern Star, Past guardian Job's Daughters. Lillie enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and playing piano. She loved fashion and interior design and especially loved spending time with family and friends.

Lillie was a gentle and caring individual who lived life with a passion. She was an eternal optimist and always saw the best in others. Everyone who knew her loved her and she loved them.

Mrs. Volzke is survived by two daughters, Bonnie McCarroll of Alliance and Peggy Kelley of Lincoln; three grandsons E.T., Kory and Jon Kelley. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.

Susie Marie Hyatt

Susie Marie Hyatt, 96, of Broken Bow, died July 18, 2004, at Heritage Hall, where she had been a resident since February 2003. Services were held July 22 at Govier Brothers Mortuary with Pastor Bob Winn and Pastor Bruce Boehmer officiating. Interment was at the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Susie was born icon on a farm southwest of Broken Bow Nov. 17, 1907, to Louis Gremm and Sophia Marie Wedeking Gremm. She attended elementary school at the Cracker Box School and was a 1926 graduate of Broken Bow High School. She studied business and was a member of the High School Orchestra.

Following graduation, Susie helped her parents care for her invalid younger sister, Ethel. Susie also had three brothers: Herman, Earl and Wilbur Gremm.

On Sept. 26, 1928, she married Ellis William Hyatt of Ansley. To this union was born icon three children, Charles Irvin, Joan Marie and Donna Rose. The couple farmed southeast of Westerville from 1928 until Ellis's death in 1970. Susie was a sales representative for the Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance of Iowa and remained on the farm until 1977, when she moved to Broken Bow. In October 2001, she moved to Independence Hall and later to Heritage Hall in February 2003.

Susie was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Broken Bow for many years, the Westerville United Methodist Church, and in 1982, joined the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow, where she remained a member until her death.

As a member of the Helping Hand Club of Westerville, Susie's love of quilting flourished. She pieced and quilted treasures for three children, seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Susie was a member of the Royal Neighbors in Broken Bow and the Custer County Grange. Susie traveled to every state in the U.S., except Alaska, with the Grange Tours.

Susie's love of music began as an 8-year-old, when her Uncle Harry Wedeking presented her with her first mandolin. She played her mandolin for many home dances, PTA programs, church functions, and grandchildren's weddings. She also spent hours playing the organ, piano, banjo, violin, and accordion for her own enjoyment.

As a homemaker, Susie's favorite cooking activity was bread making. She loved serving delicious cinnamon rolls, along with a joyful smile, to her family and friends. Susie loved picking and canning fruits and vegetables. Along with quilting, Susie knitted, crocheted, and sewed many beautiful garments.

Her husband, mother and father, three brothers, one sister and one grandchild preceded Susie in death. She is survived by three children: Irvin (Marilyn) Hyatt of Broken Bow, Joan (John) Swick of Burlington, Colo., and Donna Keller of Buffalo, Wyo. Surviving grandchildren include Bill (Luanne) Hyatt of Lexington, Vicki (Randy) Jenkins of Broken Bow, Cheryl (Rudy) Espinoza of Denver, Colo., Mark (Jane) Flora Swick of Olathe, Kan., Peter (Sherri) Keller of Riverside, Iowa, and Michael Keller of Marshall, Wis. She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one first cousin, three sisters-in-law, two nieces and one nephew.

Memorials are suggested to the Heritage Hall Activity Dept.

Dennis K. Zeigler, 68
December 22, 2010

Dennis Keith Zeigler, 68 of Broken Bow, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.

He was born icon July 12, 1944, in Broken Bow to Keith and Lillian (Ferguson) Zeigler. he spent most of his life in Broken Bow, graduating in 1962.
March 16, 1966, he married Ruby Davy in Moline, Ill. To this union three children were born; Darcy, Deana and Dustin.

Denny worked road construction until joining the Navy in 1965. He served in the Navy four and a half years, after which they returned to Broken Bow to raise their family.

He loved his family, watching his grandkids, and fishing. He was a kind, generous and patient man with a big heart. He was a man who didn’t see things in black and white; the fact is he kind of hovered in the gray area.

Denny wasn’t burdened with the social status society limits people to these days. He would help anyone from any walk of life. He was blessed that way, and we were blessed to have him in our lives to set that example.

He loved to visit and did not know a stranger. If he did, it was only for a short time span. He could fix anything and loved a good challenge. He was a good listener and wasn’t judgmental about anything. He saw the good in everyone.

He was loved by many, and will be missed by more than he could ever imagine.

Memorial services were Dec. 20, 2010, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Minister Kathy Salts officiating. Memorials have been established to the Dennis Zeigler Memorial Fund.

Eric W. Gallett, 45
December 22, 2010

Eric William Gallett was born icon May 24, 1965, in Manchester Center, Vt., and died Dec. 14, 2010, at Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow, at the age of 45 years, 6 months and 19 days.

Eric joined the United States Coast Guard in August, 1983, and was stationed in Long Beach, Calif. He met Tina Wilder on the USCG Cutter Hamilton in 1989, and proposed
Thanksgiving of that year in CuraÁao (pronounced Curasow) in the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean. They were married Jan. 27, 1990, in Salem, N.H., and made their home in Boston, Mass.

In June 1991, they were transferred to Federal Way, Wash., and Eric worked at Vessel Traffic Service in Seattle. While stationed there, son Christopher, was born icon Aug. 5, 1991. May 24, 1995, Eric's 30th birthday, daughter Jennifer was born.

In 1996, Eric was again transferred, this time to Key West, Fla., where he was stationed on the USCG Cutter Mohawk. In 1998, the family moved to Virginia where they were stationed for four years while Eric took his computer expertise and traveled the world, working in Russia, Spain, Germany and Canada. In 2002, they moved to Fort Dix, N. J., where Eric continued to travel. While in New Jersey, Eric also worked for Lockheed Martin and continued to travel.

In February 2007, Eric and Tina bought a house in Broken Bow. In May of that year, after 24 years of service, Eric retired from the United States Coast Guard as a Master Chief Radarman. The family then moved to Broken Bow.

In August 2008, Eric began working for Truestone where he continued traveling and built two ships, the Waesche (pronounced Way she) and the Bertholf. He was home for the holidays when his life was cut short.

Eric is survived by his wife, Tina; children, Christopher and Jennifer; parents-in-law, Ed and Etta Wilder; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Amy and Terry Hauf and Katie and Chris Hogg and Richard Wilder; father, Earl Gallett, retired Army, and wife Jo of Augusta, Ga; mother, Beverly Gallett and sister, Natasha both of Manchester Center, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry Kramer, 59
December 22, 2010

Jerry (Grease) Kramer, 59, a rancher from Stapleton, passed away Dec. 18, 2010, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

He was born icon June 13, 1951, to Eugene and Lenora Kramer. Jerry graduated from Stapleton High School in 1969, with many athletic honors.

Jerry could make and repair anything out of nothing. He and his father did custom haying, and grass drilling, along with ranching.

Survivors include his daughters, Heidi Kramer of Merna and Holly Kramer of Broken Bow; son, Tom Fuller and family of Kearney; grandchildren, Kadence and Tregun Trew of Broken Bow; his companion of many years, Gay Lynn Brown and her family; a sister, Karen Kramer of Jerome, Idaho; a brother, Jim (Mary) Kramer and family of Fairfield, Idaho; aunts, Arta Jean Kramer, Twyla Kramer and Pauline Clouse; uncles, Donny (Dottie) Kramer, Charles (Delores) Clouse, Ivan Pooschke; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; aunts and uncles, Denny Kramer, Skinner Kramer, Rose Pooschke, Swede and Henrietta Swanson and Donnie Clouse.

Services will be Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Stapleton Legion Hall with Frank Scott officiating. Cremation was chosen. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha F. Beeken, 76
December 22, 2010

Martha Frances Beeken, 76, was born icon Nov. 22, 1934, in Thedford, to Cecil and Lottie (Swisher) Herbaugh. She grew up and graduated from high school in Thedford.

She married Tom Beeken and together they had five children. Martha and Tom lived on the ranch in Gandy for many years. She was a member of Extension Club and a 4-H leader. She assisted every year with the Gandy alumni party. She also received several commendations for her leadership with 4-H.

Martha attended Mid Plains Community College to learn about carpentry and spent many years working in and around Arnold and Broken Bow. She loved helping people fix up their homes and cooking for others.

She loved attending community events and visiting with her friends. She was an excellent card player.

Martha also loved to read, do crafts, go to garage sales and tell jokes. She always had one handy, no mater where she was. She was the hostess for many family dinners and always invited anyone she knew that would be alone. She also loved working at the local food bank and with the podiatrist.

Martha is survived by her sister, Judy (Larry) of Missouri; children, Patty (Steve) of Omaha, Terri (Rex) of Plattsmouth, Tommy (Brenda) of Valentine and Kelli (Mark) of Arnold; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lottie Flora; her brother, Dennis; and ex-husband, Tom Beeken.

Funeral services were Dec. 18, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Arnold. Inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Martha Beeken Memorial Fund, PO Box 141, Arnold, 69120. Arnold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Viola Spencer Lucas, 85
December 22, 2010

Viola (Ada) Spencer Lucas was born icon June 7, 1925. She departed this life Dec. 14, 2010, at Broken Bow.

Services were Dec. 18, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold with Pastor Dale Coates and Frank Scott officiating. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery with Arnold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Viola and her twin sister, Iola, were born icon at the family home near Weissert. They were two of 12 children born icon to Ralph and Elsie (Pirnie) Spencer.

Viola went to West Weissert Country School. She was always so proud of the fact that she was chosen to represent her country school at the local spelling bee. Her formal education ended at the 8th grade due to poor health.

Viola met and married Bob, Jan. 30, 1949. They farmed and ranched south of Arnold on the Lucas family homestead. To this union three children were born; Michael Douglas, Betty Jo and Phillip McClellan. Later nephew, Ed Larsen, joined the family.

Viola loved and enjoyed her family, and always had time for them. She played many a card game with her grandchildren, which was one of their favorite things to do with her.

She loved to sing. The family has many memories of her singing hymns as she worked around the house.

Viola bowled on a Monday afternoon league and thoroughly enjoyed it. She had many great stories to tell of going to state bowling with the girls.

She rarely missed listening to Nebraska football games on the radio. Even after she moved to Off Broadway, she continued her enthusiasm for the Huskers.

All 11 of the kids walked across fields to the Weissert Church of God where Viola, at a young age, became a lifelong follower of Jesus. After they were married, Bob and Viola raised their family in the Arnold Methodist Church. She was often found reading her Bible, and her faith sustained her through the challenges of life.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Ralph and Elsie; husband, Bob; two brothers; three sisters; one sister-in-law, and eight brothers-in-law.

Viola is survived by her children, Mike (Marcy) Lucas, Jo (Craig) Rosentrater, Phil (Kendra) Lucas, and nephew Ed (Jane) Larsen; grandchildren, Lucas Rosentrater, Matthew Lucas, Amy (Joe) Buehler, Joseph Lucas DeMarco, Julie (Barry) Gaston and Adam Lucas; sisters, Ethel Sams, Frances Scott, Ellamae (Russell) Moseley, Darb (Jerry) Ahrens, Jean Olson and Iola Purintun; two sisters-in-law, Betty Mckain and Roberta Clark; many nieces and nephews; great-grandson, Jude Buehler and great-granddaughter, Ada, who will be born icon in January.

Viola will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
