Ted Ostrand, 81
December 15, 2010

Theodore "Ted" Ostrand, age 81 of Ansley, died Friday Dec. 10, 2010, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at the Christian Life Center Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.
Theodore "Ted" J. Ostrand was born icon Dec. 19, 1928, in rural Custer County to John R. and Harriet (Southard) Ostrand. Ted attended rural schools and Broken Bow High School. He later attended electronics school.
In 1946, Ted was married to Yvonne Dobesh. Ted operated Ted's Furniture and TV for almost 40 years in Ansley.
Ted enjoyed shooting blue rock and hunting. During his life he was faced with many times of adversity, but he persevered through it all.
Ted is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Ansley; one son, David (Joan) Ostrand of Omaha; one grandson, Karl (Julie) Ostrand of Cape Town, South Africa; and two great- granddaughters, Jensen and Emme of Cape Town, South Africa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John; and a brother, Jack.
Memorials are suggested to the Christian Life Center in Broken Bow or the Ansley Rescue Unit.

Elaine Martindale, 81
December 15, 2010

Elaine M. Martindale, 81, of Holdrege and formerly of Elm Creek, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Phelps County Health Center in Holdrege. Funeral services will be today, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at the O’Brien Straatmann Funeral Home. Chaplain DeWane Dow will officiate. Interment will be at 3 pm at the Brewster Cemetery. Memorials will be established in her name. O’Brien Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Elaine was born icon to George and Marion (Baker) Wilkinson, Dec. 25, 1928, in Dunning. She grew up in Brewster and graduated from Brewster High School in 1946. She then attended Kearney State College and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English and Library science. She was married to Eldon Martindale Nov. 16, 1947, in Brewster. She taught school in Mullen for three years. They moved to Elm Creek in the fall of 1969. She worked for the Educational Service Unit as director of media department for 15 years. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Holdrege. Her hobbies included painting and gardening.
Survivors include daughter Claire A. Olson and husband Gayle of Holdrege; sons, Jay R. Martindale and wife Kathie of Brewster, Mark E. Martindale and wife Dee of Funk, and Glen L. Martindale of Whittington, Ill.; four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and son Donald Martindale.

Frank Beran, 85
December 15, 2010

Frank J. Beran of Sargent, age 85, died Dec. 6, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, after a brief battle with lymphoma. Born Dec. 10, 1924, at home in Valley County to Frank E. and Martha (Karty) Beran, Frank was the third of six children born icon to the family.
As a young boy he attended elementary school in the country at District 71. He received his early secondary education at North Loup Public School, and he would stay with his Aunt Lil and Uncle Ig during the week. There he learned his good work ethic by becoming an early riser to help with the chores and milking cows before school.
On completion of high school at Ord Public School and after his brothers returned from the war, Frank joined the Army where he served overseas in Japan in the medical field. When he returned, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation as a surveyor and it was then he met his future bride while he was doing a project in Sargent.
Frank and Juanita (Greenstreet) were united in marriage Aug. 25, 1951. They resided in Ord for the next few years where Frank worked in the family-owned hardware store and Juanita was a teacher.
They were overjoyed in 1952, when their daughter Teresa Sue was born. In 1954, they moved to the Greenstreet ranch west of Sargent where they were blessed with a son, James Francis.
Frank’s dream of ranching was fulfilled in 1958, when the family purchased the beautiful Beran Ranch, nestled on the Middle Loup River southeast of Sargent, where Frank resided until his death. Frank had a true passion for ranching and a great love of the land and the animals that grazed there. Many knew him for his quality seedstock cowherd made up primarily of Simmental genetics, but he was no stranger to many other breeds of cattle.
He was an inspiration to many, as he was a pioneer of new technology when he began to use Artificial Insemination on his cowherd in 1962. He was an independent representative for ABS Global, a genetic company that he was involved with until his retirement in 2007. Frank instilled his work ethic and animal husbandry skills on to his children and grandsons and he enjoyed the time they shared on the family operation. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed playing ball with them, reading books, playing cards and games, and attending their many events. He was an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Nebraska Cattlemens Association, American Simmental Association and Custer County Feeders and Breeders. Frank enjoyed being a part of the Growing Young Senior Citizens and Key Villa fun night. He has received numerous awards throughout the years with ABS Global, showing cattle and for being a supporter of FFA and other youth organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita; daughter, Teri Svoboda and friend Mike Peterson; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Janice Beran; grandchildren, Scott & Jennifer Svoboda, Chris Beran and Jacki Ash, Casey and Molly Beran, Cory Beran and Lisa Herbert; great-grandchildren, Weston Svoboda, Rileigh Beran, Wryder Svoboda, Kaitlyn Beran, Mace Beran, Brennan Beran and another great-grandchild to be born icon in January; brothers Dick Beran, Rollie (Marsha) Beran, and Don Beran; sister, Alice Rogers; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and sister-in-law Vernon and Cecil Beran; one infant brother; one brother-in-law Carson Rogers; three sister-in-laws, Kathryn Beran, Pat Beran and Janie Beran.
Services were Dec. 11, 2010, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sargent. Rhoad Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and Father Jim Hunt officiated. Pall bearers were Doug Beran, Russ Rogers, Ron Rogers, Roger Rogers, Tom Beran, Rich Beran and Paul Beran. Honorary pallbearers were Marvin Rice, Ben Barnhart, Ben Gabriel, Ben Quandt, Larry Rowden, Richard Bossen, Larry Mosier and Lonnie Hughes.
Burial was in the Sargent Mount Hope Cemetery with military rites by Sargent Legion Post 104. Memorials are suggested to Sargent Summer Recreation Program or Sargent Bulldog Education Foundation.

Lloyd Porter, 87
December 15, 2010

Lloyd Delbert Porter, 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. Lloyd was born icon June 11, 1923, at home near Lomax, Nebr. He was the second child of four children born icon to Joseph and Laura Etta (Whisman) Porter.
As a youth, he was raised on a farm and learned at an early age the value of hard work. Lloyd attended Eddyville High School through the 9th grade. He was most proud of earning the letter “E” in track. After leaving high school, he went to help his father.
February 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Margaret Maxine Buschow. To this union, two sons and four daughters were born.
Lloyd and Margaret farmed in the Eddyville/ Sumner area with the last 35 years being in Park Valley. Margaret passed away July 22, 1984.
Lloyd married Bonnie Cummins April 22, 1985. He continued farming for six years. Lloyd retired and they moved to Lexington in 1991. Farming was in his blood so for several years he made daily trips to the farm. Lloyd settled into his retirement years finding great contentment spending time with his family and friends. In pursuing his passion for wood working, he shared his projects with many, including his prized hand-crafted marble boards.
Lloyd could always be found at the Grand Generation Center playing pitch and shooting pool. If you were lucky, the guys would let you play, but don’t expect to win as it was cut-throat pitch. You can be sure that he reminisced about the good old days and how things have changed through the years.
After the death of Bonnie, Jan. 23, 2009, Lloyd moved in with his daughter, Debby and Curt Benjamin. This heartfelt decision by Debby and Curt enriched his life with joy, peace, contentment and created wonderful memories. One of the most cherished memories was playing marbles with Lloyd and hoping that you could win a game every now and then.
December 2, 2010, Lloyd fractured his hip, and passed away due to complications Dec. 9, 2010, at the age of 87. Even on the last day of his life, he was working hard to get home.
Lloyd will always be remembered as a kind and generous man who loved his family and friends with all his heart. He touched the lives of many and will be missed.
He leaves to mourn two sons, Jerry Porter of Sumner, and Dr. Richard and Gwen Porter of Ceresco; four daughters, JoAnn and David Currie of Lincoln, Dianne and Ryan Roberts of Plano, Texas, Deb Jones and Curt Benjamin of Lexington, and Judy and Tim Schroeder of Omaha; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold; two sisters, Loretta Owens and Velda Matz; and one great-granddaughter, Jillian Woita, as well as his wives.
Funeral Services were Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington, with Pastor Michael Gruhn officiating. Burial was in the Kearney Cemetery at Kearney.
Because of Lloyd’s love for children, the family has requested memorials be given to Children’s Hospital in Omaha. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington was in charge of arrangements.

Tim DeBauche, 51
November 29, 2010

Tim DeBauche, age 51, of Merna died Nov. 18, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Tim DeBauche was born icon May 27, 1959, at Onawa, Iowa, to Thomas and Wilburta (Carroll) DeBauche. He grew up in Moorhead, Iowa.
June 1, 1977, he was married to Sally Winn. The couple farmed at Moorhead, Iowa on the family farm. They lived in various locations before moving to Merna in 1988. Tim farmed and worked at the COOP.
Tim loved the outdoors. He collected guns, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and cooking barbeque. Tim enjoyed helping his neighbors from branding cattle to working on their car.
Tim is survived by his wife Sally of Merna; son, Joel (Sara) DeBauche of Bellevue; daughter, Jodi DeBauche of Omaha; two grandchildren Kayleen and Payton; his parents, Thomas and Wilburta DeBauche of Indianola; a brother, Terry (Deb) DeBauche of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his sister, Tina (Jerry) Kircher of Indianola.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ted.
Funeral services were Nov. 22, 2010, in Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Richard Duryea officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Donor’s Choice.

Ellen Kleeb Hickman, 99
December 15, 2010

Ellen Olga Kleeb Hickman was born icon March 15, 1911, the third child but the first to be born icon in the frame house of Albert and Sylvie Haumont Kleeb on the French Table near Weissert. Ellen attended Elton School and Broken Bow High School, graduating in 1929.
Upon graduation, she was offered a job in the Custer County Register of Deeds office, where she worked for several years saving toward her goal to attend a business school. In the late 1930s, she moved to Chicago to attend Gregg’s Business School.
Typing was her forte, and was taught by Mr. Gregg. She represented the Gregg Business School in typing competitions because of her ability to type 120 words per minute accurately on a manual typewriter.
Upon graduation her first job was a secretary in a Chicago apartment complex. It was during this time she met her future husband. She married Edward John Burman July 20, 1940, in Chicago, where they made their home.
In 1945, they adopted a son, Jerry. After that Ellen changed jobs and worked for the Zenith Corporation’s hearing aid division.
On his way to pick Ellen up from work, Ed was killed in the Chicago tornado April 20, 1967. Ellen remained in Chicago until 1970, when the Kleeb family asked her to return to Broken Bow to take care of her father, Albert Kleeb.
Ellen and her father moved from the farm to Broken Bow, and she remained in Broken Bow until she married Bill Hickman in 1989, after which they moved to Morrill.
Ellen and Bill returned to Broken Bow and resided at Liberty Square in the Melham Medical Complex. Bill passed away in 2000. Ellen continued to reside in Liberty Square until 2006, when she moved to Independence Hall. She moved to Heritage Hall in 2010, where she passed away Dec. 11, 2010.
Ellen was an interesting and witty lady. She was always a Presbyterian. She loved to read, was an avid fan of the Chicago baseball teams, and told interesting stories of how she met Bob Hope, Al Capone’s sister and brother, and Pearl Bailey. She also told family stories that were always fun and interesting. She will be missed.
Ellen is survived by her son, Jerry Burman; stepson, Bill Hickman; granddaughter, Honey Lynn Burman; four great-grandchildren, Doran, Austin, Angel and Jeremiah; nieces and nephews, Edith Gorley, Pat (Roland) Hansen, Shirley (Butch) McGinn, Harvey (Julie) Kleeb, Jr., Al (Joann) Kleeb, Cheryl (Roie) Black, Linda Crist, Lynn (Dave) Nuss, and many more extended family members.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Ed Burman and Bill Hickman; parents, Albert and Sylvie Kleeb; sisters, Lucille (Bill) McArthur and Ethel (Carlos) Schaper; brothers, Harvey (Jardis) Kleeb and Robert (Eileen) Kleeb; sister-in-law, Carol (Mike) Klingbeil, and brother-in-law, Chester (Evelyn) Hickman.

Ervin Mortensen, 75

Ervin “Erv” Mortensen passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Ervin Eugene Mortensen was born icon Sept. 5, 1935, to Marvin and Grace (Krause) Mortensen on the family farm near Mason City. He attended school in Mason City through the 9th grade, when his father’s illness required him to help on the farm.
He entered the U.S. Army Oct. 14, 1958, and served at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and Ft. Bragg, N.C. Erv also spent nearly 1 1/2 years in Germany before being discharged Sept. 28, 1960, at Ft. Dix, N.J. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1964.
Erv was married to Sue Stevenson June 11, 1961. To this union four children were born: Timothy Ray, Jimmy Dean, Jody Kent and Tanya LaRece. The couple later divorced.
Erv married Barb Lauer July 4, 1976, on the Lauer farm near Merna. To this union was born icon daughter, Christine Marie.
Erv worked at Bow Oil and L&W Tire, but spent most of his life as a truck driver, both over the road and construction. He worked for Western Engineering for many years, and also for Critter Trucking until his retirement in 2008.
He also enjoyed helping out on the farm whenever he got a chance, working on both the Krause and Lauer family farms through the years.
November 24, 1992, he was married to Betty Harmon. They made their home in Callaway.
He was a member of the American Legion Post of Callaway.
Erv never knew a stranger and always had a million stories to share with anyone with a listening ear. He had a great sense of humor and loved a good practical joke.
He was happiest when outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing or working in his garden. Many of his neighbors enjoyed the bounty of fresh vegetables from Erv’s garden during the summer. He also loved working on cars, and could often be found under the hood of a car.
He loved to cook and can, and his cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies were always family favorites. Visitors to Erv’s house were usually greeted with a cup of coffee, a baked goodie and a great story. Those stories will be treasured and shared by all who knew him.
Erv is survived by four children, Jim of Callaway, Jody (Ellen) of Broken Bow, Tanya Allen of Broken Bow, and Christine (Guy) Holloway of Broken Bow; step-daughter, Misty (Eddie) Garza of Sody Daisy, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Tracy Mortensen of Grand Island and sons Tyler and Steven; brothers, Lee (Sherry), Lynn (Vickie), Everett (Joyce), all of Idaho, and Rich (Anne) of California; one sister, Kay (Lee) Winegar of Idaho; special friend, Evelyn Rich of Ansley; grandchildren, Ann (Chris) Scott of Gothenburg, Adam Holland of Lincoln, AJ (Tara Taul) Holland of Broken Bow, and Aron (Arlene Smith) Holland of Lincoln, Chelsey (Tommy) Haywood of Broken Bow, Megan Allen and Shelby Allen of Broken Bow, Matt, Corey and Zackary Holloway of Broken Bow, and Jordis and Jada Garza of Tennessee; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Timothy Ray; brother, Bill; baby sister, Marie, and step-daughter Margeret.
Funeral services were Jan. 18 in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow, with the Rev. Kathy Salts officiating. Inurnment will be in the Mason City Cemetery at a later date. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family or the donor's choice.
