Shirley Brandt

Shirley Brandt, 70, of Wayne died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Norfolk.

Shirley R. Brandt was born icon Jan. 23, 1933, in Wayne. She graduated from Wayne High School in 1950 and attended Wayne State College. She then taught rural school on the southwest edge of Wayne. She married Irvin Brandt on June 6, 1954, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wayne. The couple made their home in Wayne until moving to Norfolk in 1955. They returned to Wayne in 1959. She moved to the Oaks Retirement Community in July 1998.

She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Survivors include; three sons, Steve (and wife, Lisa) Brandt of Fremont, Mark (and wife, Kim) Brandt of Columbus and Jeff Brandt of Norfolk; a sister, Margie Smidt of Trumbell; a brother-in-law, Vern Kahler of West Des Moines, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Betty Gildersleeve of Hastings; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2001, a brother and a sister.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne with the Rev. William Koeber officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Home in Wayne. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.

Bryant Clegg

Bryant L. Clegg, 80, of Fremont died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Clegg was born icon Jan. 31, 1923, in Ionia, Kan. He grew up in Mankato, Kan., where he graduated from high school in 1940. He was a member of First Christian Church in Mankato. He married Carol J. Seals on Sept. 16, 1943, in Mankato, and she preceded him in death on March 15, 1998.

He had served in the Army Air Corps during the World War II years of 1943-45. He served with the 451st Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Cleggs moved to Fremont in 1954, when he was working on the construction of Omaha's City Auditorium. He then began working at Hormel Food Corporation in Fremont, retiring from there after 30 years in 1984.

Survivors include: a daughter, Trudy (Mrs. Gary) Cross of Lincoln; two sons, Bruce (and wife, Linda) Clegg of Nickerson and David Clegg of Milwaukee; three sisters, Vivian Reed of Burr Oak, Kan., Joan Lammon of Denver and Sharon (Mrs. Bill) Hunter of Denver; and two brothers, Frosty Clegg of Burr Oak and Mike Clegg of Winona, Minn.

No local services will be held. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato.

A memorial has been established to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Francis Kluthe

Francis Kluthe, 76, of Howells died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.

Kluthe was born icon Aug. 14, 1927, in Howells. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Olean (rural Howells) and Howells High School. He graduated from Clarkson High School in 1945. He attended National Auto Body School in Kansas City. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945-50. He married Shirley Mohnsen on June 17, 1950, in Clyde (rural North Bend). He was a supervisor at the Ford Manufacturing Plant in Kansas City until moving back to Howells in 1952. He worked for IBP in West Point for 13 years. He worked for Pimper Garage before purchasing the Mobil Gas Station in Howells and then he built the Kluthe Radiator Shop and operated that for more than 40 years. He played saxophone and clarinet in the Howells Hot Shots and the Solid Eight bands. He was involved in the Civil Defense for many years.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad and the Community Club, all of Howells.

Survivors include: his wife; three sons, Mike (and wife, Marilyn) Kluthe of North Platte, Doug (and wife, Karen) Kluthe of Wakefield and Chris Kluthe of Hastings; three daughters, Cindy (Mrs. Bill) Kroll of Hebron, Patty (Mrs. Mike) Recker of Howells and Janet (Mrs. Mike) Jundt of Norfolk; two sisters, Elizabeth Ernesti of Dodge and Sister Marie Therese Kluthe of Madison, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Bernadette (Mrs. Mark) Buresh of Dodge; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, five brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Howells with the Rev. Paul Ortmeier officiating. Visitation will be from 2:30-8 p.m. today and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, all at the church. Rosaries will be said at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. today, both at the church. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Howells with military honors by Albin Folda Post 155 of the American Legion.

Memorials have been established to Howells Catholic Community School, Howells Volunteer Fire Department and Howells Rescue Unit.

Svoboda Funeral Home in Schuyler is in charge of arrangements.

R. Wiley Remmers

R. Wiley Remmers, 87, of Auburn died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn.

Remmers was born icon March 1, 1916, near Auburn. He was a former educator and state senator.

Survivors include: his wife, Maxine; four daughters, Joyce Bruggeman of Modesto, Calif., Lois Callan of Sacramento, Janice (Mrs. Mike) Guilliatt of Fremont and Jacqueline (Mrs. Brian) Branda of Houston; a brother, Merle (and wife, LouElla) Remmers of Burlington, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lee Remmers of Auburn; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran (Stone) Church near Auburn. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Auburn Rescue Squad, Nemaha Valley Museum, Nemaha County Hospital Foundation and Peru State College Foundation.

Lloyd Conrad

The memorial service for Lloyd Herman Conrad, 88, of Beemer will be 10 a.m. today at Colonial Haven Nursing Home Chapel in Beemer.

He died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer.

Conrad was born icon June 10, 1915, at the family farm one mile north of Beemer. He was baptized with his siblings by his uncle. He grew up on the farm and graduated in 1934 from Beemer Public High School. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at an early age but continued to farm until 1953 when the family moved to Beemer. He entered Colonial Haven Nursing Home in 1976. He served on the Resident's Council and was honored to be the Valentine's Day King. He took part in as many activities as he could and as long as he was able. He was an inspiration to those he came in contact with as he struggled with the effects of multiple sclerosis.

He was a member of United Methodist Church and Beemer Masonic Lodge 253 A.F. and A.M. He held various offices including Worshipful Master. He was presented with a 50-year-membership badge from Wisner Lodge 114 A.F. and A.M. in March 2002.

Survivors include: a sister, Betty M. Wostoupal Predoehl of West Point and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

The Rev. Scott Evans will officiate today's service. Burial will be in Beemer Cemetery at a later date.

Nancy Harris

Nancy L. Harris, 51, of Fremont died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.

Arrangements are pending at Warne-Johnson Funeral Home in Hooper.

Vesta Tillotson

The funeral for Vesta Tillotson, 96, of Fremont, formerly of Beatrice, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice.

She died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at Merrick Manor in Fremont.

She was born icon June 17, 1907, in Beatrice. She married Leon Tillotson on Dec. 28, 1927, in Beatrice. She moved from North Platte to Beatrice in 1965 and then to Fremont in 1995. She was a former resident of the Paddock Kensington in Beatrice. Her husband preceded her in death in 1975.

She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice. Survivors include: a son, Larry L. (and wife, Dee) Tillotson of Fremont; a grandson, a granddaughter, many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a sister and an infant brother. The Rev. Kelly Karges will officiate Monday's service. The body will lie in state from 12-9 p.m. Sunday and until the time of service Monday, all at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. Burial will be in Evergreen Home Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Merrick Manor in Fremont and Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice with Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge. Messages of condolences may be sent to rich@griffithshovendick.com. They will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of arrangements.

William J. Vopalensky

The funeral for William J. "Bud" Vopalensky, 78, of North Bend will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. He died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Vopalensky was born icon Jan. 10, 1925, in Morse Bluff. He grew up in rural Morse Bluff and was a graduate of North Bend High School. He married Juanita Tharp on June 6, 1946, in Fremont. He farmed the family farm near Morse Bluff all his working life until retiring and moving to North Bend in Oct. 1988. He was an agent and director for Farmer's Mutual United Insurance Co. and was an agent for Farmer's Mutual Hail Insurance Co. of Des Moines.

He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, a life member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 3736, a former member of St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff and previously served as a trustee and served on the building committee when the church was built. He served nine years on the Morse Bluff District 14 School Board and for many years on the Morse Bluff Dike and Drainage District. He was a 45-year member of Morse Bluff Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Don Vopalensky of McKinney, Tex.; two daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Morris) Kisling of Cortland and Peggy (Mrs. Edwin) Nelson of Luzerne, Iowa; a sister, Betty Melcher of Fremont; eight grandchildren, Durayne, Dawn, Paul, Cory and Chris Ebbers and Tammy, Shawna and Brandon Nelson; two step grandchildren, Dale and Ronda Kisling; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Faith Ebbers; three step great-grandchildren, Sophia, Olivia and Timothy Kisling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Bill" and Ludmila "Lillie" Vopalensky and a son-in-law, Gary Ebbers.

The Rev. Roland Peschel will officiate Tuesday's service. A public vigil service with a rosary led by Knights of Columbus will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Visitation will be from 12-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Durayne, Paul, Cory and Chris Ebbers, Brandon Nelson, Bill Melcher and Charles Vopalensky. Burial will be in Killian Cemetery, west of Morse Bluff.

Memorials have been established to North Bend Rescue Squad, North Bend Senior Center, Morse Bluff Fire Department and St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend is in charge of arrangements.

Clifford Freeman

The funeral for Clifford C. "Cliff" Freeman, 82, of Fremont will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Fremont.

He died Monday, April 21, 2003, at his home.

He was born icon Aug. 31, 1920, in Nickerson. He grew up in Nickerson and was a 1940 graduate of Nickerson High School. He worked with his father at Freeman Manufacturing until entering the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a sergeant and served from Sept. 10, 1942, to Dec. 27, 1945, in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre. After his discharge, he returned to Nickerson and worked with his father. He later was a welder and mechanic at Gifford Implement in Fremont and then for Flynn & Larson International in Fremont until retiring in 1985.

He married Roberta Dunker on Nov. 28, 1942, in St. Louis.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fremont, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and a member of American Legion Post 20, both of Fremont. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 of Fremont, a member of the Fremont Honor Guard, Fraternal Order of Eagles 200 of Fremont and the Eagles Camping Club. He was a former volunteer fireman at Nickerson and at Fremont for many years and was a former volunteer for the Civil Defense.

Survivors include: his wife; three daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Larry) Bokowski of Longmont, Colo., Linda (Mrs. Bill) Giddings and Susan (Mrs. Brad) Benzel, all of North Bend; three sisters, Alice Schwinck of Fremont, Donna (Mrs. John) Morris of Omaha and Eleanor (Mrs. Bob) Miles of Fremont; eight grandchildren, Bryan and Angela Bokowski, Bill Giddings Jr., Sarah Ann and Kristie Giddings, Stacie (Mrs. Jim) Wieneke, Sara Sue (Mrs. Jamie) Goertz and Bradley Benzel II; and eight great-grandchildren, Blake and Brooke Bokowski, Austin and Dalton Wieneke, Colton Giddings, Tanner Fraas and Callie and Kaydance Goertz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Sarah (Million) Freeman; three brothers, Glen Burel, Edwin and Richard Freeman; and two sisters, Ola Anderson and Ruth Greunke.

The Rev. Greg Hall will officiate Saturday's service. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time at the church. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post 854 and American Legion Post 20. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Memorials have been established to Calvary United Methodist Church in Fremont, Grace Hospice and American Cancer Society.

Preston Goebel

Preston Lee Goebel, infant son of Steven Goebel and Tabitha Sweet of Fremont, was born icon and died on Monday, April 21, 2003, at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Survivors also include: grandparents, Jack and Brenda Sweet and Randy and Tina Goebel, all of Fremont; and great-grandmothers, Alvena Evans of Fremont, Dolores Sweet of Nickerson and Betty Goebel of Fremont.

The graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont with the Rev. Greg Hall of First United Methodist Church in Fremont officiating. There is no visitation.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.

Fern Vanshur

The graveside service for Fern D. Vanshur, 84, of Fremont will be 10 a.m. Friday in Union Cemetery south of Cedar Bluffs.

She died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Nye Pointe Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fremont.

Fern Smith was born icon Jan. 23, 1919, in Leigh. She lived with her family in Leigh and when she was 11 years of age, they moved to Fremont, and she had resided here since that time. She married Harvey A. Vanshur on June 6, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa. During her working years, she had been employed at the hospital in Fremont and also at Rogers Tent & Awning. Her spouse preceded her in death in July 1988.

Survivors include: two sons, Ronald (and wife, Frances) Vanshur and Terry (and wife, Judy) Vanshur, all of Fremont; a sister, Virginia (Mrs. Gerald) Claussen of North Bend; two brothers, Norman Smith of Central City and Charles (and wife, Alvera) Smith of Fremont; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

The Rev. Jocelyn Tupper of First United Methodist Church will officiate Friday's service. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont.
