Trina M. Rodriguez, 79, of 308 Beechwood Drive, Grand Island died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her residence. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Saturday, June 21, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River with Rev. Phil Flott and Rev. Paul Colling officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Wood River. Visitation will be 5-8 PM Friday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River with a Rosary Service at 7 PM. Memorials are suggested to the family. Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rodriguez was born icon on January 23, 1924 in Omaha to Zenon and Rosario (Martinez) Rivera. She attended South High School in Omaha. Trina met her husband Andres as a café in Shelton. They married three weeks later on October 17, 1946 in Minnesota. She worked as a telephone operator and as a riveter during World War II. She also assisted in translation for the Grand Island Extension Club and Head Start. She was a C.S.M. at Park Place Nursing Home.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River.

Survivors include her husband, Andres of Wood River; sons, Larry and wife Kris Rodriguez of Lincoln, Anthony and wife Sue Rodriguez of Lincoln, and Robert Rodriguez of Lincoln; daughters, Juanita and husband Migual Moreno of Glennwood, IA, Rosie and husband Garry Thompson of Grand Island, Jeannie and husband Joe Smith of Arizona, and Susie Imlay of Lincoln; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Knopp of Omaha; brother, Zenon Rivera, Jr. of Shelton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Andrew Rodriguez, Jr. and great-granddaughter, Briana Verba; two son-in-laws, Dale Imlay and Donald Kinney; 4 sisters and 4 brothers.

Elizabeth Gilbert
55, Kearney Resident

Elizabeth Gilbert, 55, of 3607 13th Avenue Kearney, Nebraska died Sunday, June 15th, 2003 at her residence. Memorials services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 23, 2003 at First Baptist Church in Kearney with the Rev. Stan Murdoch officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Research. There will be no visitation. O'Brien - Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon on September 28, 1947 in Crab Orchard, KY to Cecil and Mae (Dyehouse) Martin. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education from the University of Illinois and did masters work at UNK. On June 26, 1971 she married James Gilbert. After they were married the couple lived in Champaign, IL, Chadron, NE and Radford, VA before making their home in Kearney in 1988 where she was employed by UNK. She taught English as a second language to international students. Her interests focused on her family, gardening, reading and travel. Her love of children and education was greatly important to her. Her daughter was her treasure.

In addition to her husband she is survived by daughter, Jennifer Hunter, Kearney, Nebraska; her mother; brothers, Randy Martin, and Don Martin; and sister, Pat Godby all of Crab Orchard, KY.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Etta Broadbent
87, Kearney Resident

Etta Broadbent, 87 of Kearney and formerly of Miller, died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at St. John's Good Samaritan Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at Faith United Church in Kearney with the Rev. C.J. Willis officiating. Interment will be at Armada Cemetery in Miller. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM Tuesday at O'Brien - Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to the church. O'Brien - Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney and Elm Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Broadbent was born icon on December 7, 1915 in Varina, Iowa to Charles Thomas and Melissa Etta (Selleck) Martin. She grew up in the Haven Chappel area where she attended a country school. She was united in marriage to William W. Stevens of Amherst on June 2, 1941 until his death in 1947. On June 28, 1950 she married Stanley C. Broadbent and the couple made their home in Miller until his death in 1986. The couple farmed and Etta was a housewife and mother.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney. She enjoyed bowling, farm life, sewing, gardening, attending coffee club and spending time with her family.

Survivors include sons, Leslie C. Stevens and Wendell M. Stevens both of Kearney, Eldon W. Stevens of Allendale, MI, and C. Milan Broadbent of Green Bay, WI; daughters, Virginia L. Butler of Elm Creek, and Geneva M. Sickler of Lincoln; a step-brother, Millard (Bing) Martin of California; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, a grandson, a great-granddaughter, her twin brother and a sister.

John J. Arrants
73, Kearney Resident

John Arrants, 73 of 3700 Avenue G, Kearney, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 16 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kearney with the Rev. Dr. Thomas P. Hansen officiating. Interment will be at Kearney Cemetery with military rites performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #759 and American Legion Post #52 of Kearney. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Sunday with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 at the O'Brien - Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. O'Brien - Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arrants was born icon March 4, 1930 in Morrill County, Nebraska to John and Elsie (Fiscus) Arrants. He attended rural schools in Morrill County. On July 3, 1951 he married Ethel (Neumeyer) in Bridgeport, NE. In September of 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for two years. The couple made their home in Mitchell, NE on a ranch until 1958 when they moved to Mullen where John ran the Jewel Diner for a few years. In 1968, the family moved to Burwell where he worked for the Burwell Community Hospital. In 1972, they made their move to Kearney for John to work as Director of Environmental Services at Good Samaritan Hospital until his retirement in 1997.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, American Legion in Mullen, Nebraska, VFW in Kearney, Nebraska Association of Institutional Linen Management, American Society of Healthcare Environmental Services, American Hospital Association, National Executive Housekeepers Association Incorporated, Nebraska Healthcare Housekeepers Association and officiated the Nebraska Hospital Association.

Survivors include his wife of Kearney; son, Jim and wife Ginger of Rural Bridgeport; daughters, Ila of Columbus and Violet and husband Robert VanHorn of Kearney; sisters, Maxine and husband Homer Parks of Callaway and Bessie Hubbard of Bayard; brother-in-law, Wes and wife Shirley Neumeyer of Prince George, BC, Canada; sister-in-law, Gladys Arrants of Alliance; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bobby Arrants.

James W. Davis Sr.
Kearney Resident, 75

James W. Davis Sr., 75, a resident of St. John's Care Center in Kearney, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the center. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Chapel in Elm Creek. The Rev. Cathy Cole will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #316 of Elm Creek and Masonic rites will be conducted by the Rob Morris Lodge of Kearney. There will be no
visitation. Memorials will be established by the family. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Elm creek is in charge of
arrangements.

He was at Omaha, Neb on June 15, 1927 to Roy and Doris (Johnston) Davis. He received his education at Carlsbad, N.M. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1945 and was stationed for a time at the Kearney Airbase. He was married to Vera Kenton in Kearney on August 8, 1948. After his discharge from the service in 1948, he worked as an air conditioner engineer for Southwestetrn Public Power in Roswell, N.M. Later he worked for D&F Industries in McAllen. He moved to Elm Creek in May 2003.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge 32 degree. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, rock grinding and silversmithing.

Survivors include sons, James W. Jr. and wife, Kathy of Grand Island, Jeff and wife, Susan of Elm Creek; daughter, Pamala Loomis and husband, Gary of Riverdale; sister, Ann Wonders of Roswell, N.M. Also surviving are five
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death his parents.

Genevieve Maloney, 87
Wood River Resident

Genevieve Maloney, 87, loving mother and grandmother of Wood River, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2003 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, June 9, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River with the Father Paul Colling officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wood River. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8, Rosary will be recited at 7 PM, Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. Memorials are suggested to the Wood River Rescue Unit. Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Maloney was born icon March 25, 1916 in Lawrence, NE to Joseph and Mary (Vonhaus) Schutte. She lived most of her life in the Lexington area.

Survivors include her son, Jim Maloney and wife, Barbara of Wood River; daughter, Berny Hawley and husband, Keith of Olathe, KS; sisters, Alma Hoelling and husband, Dan of Minden, Norma Karmazin and husband, Clarence of Lawrence, Lucille McMillion of Leominster, MA, and Mary Sidlow and husband Gordon of Hastings; brothers, Clarence Schutte and wife, Irene of Kearney, and Gilbert Schutte of Granite Falls, WA; a sister-in-law Eleanor Schutte of Grand Island; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents; brothers, George and Norbert Schutte.

Elton Dubbs, 84
Retired Wood River Farmer

Elton E. Dubbs, 84 of Wood River died Sunday, June 1, 2003 at the Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday morning at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Wood River with the Rev. David Lamb officiating. Burial will be at Cameron Cemetery north of Wood River. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River or the family’s choice. Apfel-O’Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon September 23, 1918 in Shelton to Emmett and Nora (Dean) Dubbs. He grew up in the Shelton/Wood River area. He attended Hall County Rural District 13 school and graduated from Wood River High School in 1937. He entered the Army Medical Corp in February of 1942 and served in Africa for four years, being discharged in October of 1945.

On January 31, 1945 he married Jean Allan in Wood River. He was a life-long farmer in the Wood River area and operated a large custom farming business in Hall County and the surrounding counties.

He served on the School Board of Wood River Rural High School District #83 for 16 years and served as both an elder and deacon of the Presbyterian Church in Wood River. He served on the ASCS Board for 6 years. He also served as a Wood River Booster and on the Cameron Cemetery Board for several years.

Survivors include his wife of Wood River; sons, Richard E and wife JoAnn, and David G. and wife Patricia, both of Cairo, Randall E. and wife Pam of Shelton, Michael D. and wife Marilyn, Danny J. and wife Kathy, Terry L., and Wendell R. and wife Sally, all of Wood River; sisters, Colleen Snyder of Shelton, Cuba Snyder of Arnold, and Bonnie Goodwin of Cairo; 16 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 sisters, Ruby Vogel, Madeline Lubes, and Wauneta Dubbs (infant).

Leidy C. Cardenas, 19 and daughter: Sujeili, 2 of Kearney, died Saturday, May 24th from injuries in a car accident three mile west of Gibbon. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Victor Carrillo will officiate. Interment will be in the Kearney Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family. Visitation will be 6-11P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home and 8 A.M. to service time, Wednesday at the funeral home. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Leidy C. Cardenas was born icon on June 9, 1983 in Medellin, Columbia to Mariano and Lilian (Aguirre) Ospina. She moved to Kearney in July of 1998. She was married to Arturo (Art) Cardenas in Mexico on Dec. 29, 1999. She had worked for Good Samaritan Hospital. She was working for First National Bank of Omaha as a tele marketer at the time of her death..
She was a member of the Light of the World Church in Kearney
Survivors include her husband of Kearney, daughter Abby of the home, parents of Kearney, sister; Angela Ceja of Kearney and step-brother; Carlos Ospina of Omaha.

Sujeili A. Cardenas was born icon October 22, 2000 in Kearney to Arturo and Leidy (Ospina) Carndenas. Survivors include father of Kearney, sister; Abby of the home; grandparents; Mariano and Lilian Ospina of Kearney and Manuel and Aurora Cardenas of Mexico.

Betty Connell
Kearney Resident

Betty J. (Whitney) Connell, 75, of Kearney, owner of Grandpa’s Steakhouse in Kearney, died Tuesday, Oct. 14th at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, Oct. 20th at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev. Charles Torpey will officiate. Interment will be in the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 P.M., Sunday at the church with a prayer vigil at 7 PM. Memorials are suggested to Kearney Catholic High School Foundation-Bud and Betty Connell Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society or the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon on Oct. 26, 1927 in Kearney to Wert D. and Mary (Cassidy) Whitney.

She attended Kearney Public Schools and was a 1945 graduate of Longfellow High School. She was married to Howard “Bud” Connell in Grand Island on May 1, 1948. She worked for Safeway District Offices. In 1952, she and her husband opened and operated Grandpa’s Steakhouse until her death. Her husband died in 1993.

She was a member of the church, American Legion and VFW Aux., Nebraska Restaurant Association, Kearney Eagles and DOES. She was also was named in Who’s Who of Nebraska, and an honorary member of K.V.F.D.

Survivors include son; Jim of Tucson, AZ, daughter; Elizabeth “Libby” Merrifield of Kearney, 2 grandchildren; Kristen and Keyton, brothers; Carl Whitney of Kearney and Edward Jones of Carlsbad, CA, sister; Ollie Dady of Kearney.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 brothers, 1 sister and 2 step-sisters.

Adam Bartusiak

Adam E. (Pete) Bartusiak, 95, of Kearney, died Monday, Sept. 15th at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Friday ath the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Charles Torpey will officiate. Interment will be at the Kearney Cemetery. He was born icon on December 23, 1907 in Elyria, Nebraska to Peter and Anastasia (Furtak) Bartusiak. He attended school at Ft. Hartsuf, Nebraska. In his early years he worked as a mechanic in the Chevrolet Garage in Ord. He was married to Josephine Kaslon in Ashton, Nebraska on April 3, 1931. She died on May 1, 1952. He moved to Manitou Springs, CO and worked in Fort Carson, CO during WWII where he also worked as a mechanic. He moved to Renton, WA where he owned a grocery store. He moved back to Nebraska during the mid 1940’s where he owned his own mechanic shop. He was married to LeNora Cafferty in Nevada in 1954. She died in 1975. During the 1970’s he was the owner of the Little USA service station west of Kearney. He was married to Linda Slater in Las Vegas in 1977.

He was a member of the Travelers Protective Associations (TPA). His pastimes included; traveling, carpentry and loved to tinker.

Survivors include his wife of Kearney; son, Ray and wife Lois of Littleton, CO; daughter, Arlene Buchanan and husband Bob of Seattle, WA, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 2 wives, his parents, a granddaughters, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Leonard A. Hurt
Grand Island Resident

Leonard A. Hurt, 79, of Ashton died Saturday, September 13, 2003 at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island. Memorial services were Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Wood River, with Rev. Rose Bartleson officiating. There was no visitation. Burial was at the Wood River Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Wood River. Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River handled the arrangements.

Leonard was born icon on February 16, 1924 on a farm near Rockville, Nebraska the son of Rudolph and Rose (Steckley) Hurt. He grew up on a farm near Ashton and graduated from Ashton High School in 1942. He entered the United State Navy in January of 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 31, 1946. He attended Refrigeration and Air Conditioning School in Omaha. In 1948 he trained and became a Journeyman Iron Worker and worked on various iron construction projects in Nebraska and surrounding areas. He continued in iron work until returning to the family farm in 1954.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Rathman on December 29, 1954 in Grand Island, after which the couple lived on a farm near Ashton. Leonard retired from farming in 1976 but continued to live on the family farm.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 108 in Ashton and Disabled American Veteran’s organization.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hurt of Grand Island; son Dan and wife Roxanne Hurt of McCook; daughters, Judy and husband Gary Markvicka of Manhattan, KS; Pam and husband Ralph Urbanski of Kearney; and Shelly and husband Jay Sorensen of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, and brother, Gilbert of Bellevue.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Hurt; and sister, Caramel Morehead.
