Marjorie H. Silkett, 85, of Kearney , died Friday, Aug. 1st at the St. John’s Care Center in Kearney .
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, Aug. 6th at the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney.
The Rev. Bob Gannon will officiate.
Interment will be in the Kearney Cemetery .
Visitation will be 4-8P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Care Center .

She was born icon on December 18, 1917 in Cedar Rapids , Nebraska to Edward A. and Myrtle E. (Halpin) Thomas. She grew up in Cedar Rapids and received her education from Cedar Rapids where she graduated from high school. She was united in marriage to Clarence H. Silkett on February 1, 1937 in Buffalo County , Nebraska. After which the couple lived in several towns in Nebraska and South Dakota. While living in Kearney she was employed by Baldwin Manufacturing and K-Mart.

She was a former member of TOPS, American Legion Auxiliary Post #52, and Eagles Auxiliary AERIE 2722.

Survivors include her daughters, Donna J. Owings of North Platte , and Sandra J. Monthey and husband Lloyd of Minden; 6 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; sisters, Maxine Miller and Jean Clabaugh both of Kearney; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and a son-in-law.

Rosie Vogt
85, Kearney Resident

Rosie Vogt, 85 of Kearney died on Friday, August 1, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney .
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 5 at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney with Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Interment will be in the Kearney Cemetery .
Visitation will be 4-8 PM, Monday, August 4 at the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney .
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church .

She was born icon November 4, 1917, in Gibbon to James and Katherine (Yendra) Polka. She grew up in Buffalo County and attended Buffalo County District #110 school. On March 2, 1937, she married Charles W. Vogt in Gibbon. They farmed north of Ravenna until moving to Kearney in 1940.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kearney and the Eagles Auxiliary.

Survivors include; sons, Milfred Vogt and wife, Marjorie and Donald Vogt and wife, Cathy of Kearney; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles and one son, Raymond.

Violet Lockwood
Kearney Resident

Violet V. Lockwood, 89, of Kearney , died Tuesday, Aug 5 th at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney . Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday at Grace Fellowship in Kearney . The Revs. Bruce Demmel and D. R. Nelson will officiate. Interment will be 1:30 P.M at the Moses Hill Cemetery .
Visitation will be 6-8 P.M.,Thursday at the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney and one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church. O’Brien – Straatmann Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon June 9, 1914 in Savannah , MO to Jasper and Nina (Crane) Case. She grew up in Atlanta , NE and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1932. She worked at the Holdrege Library.
On May 22, 1938, she married Lewis “Lee” Lockwood in Atlanta . The couple lived in McCook, Broken Bow, Cozad, Lexington and Kearney . She was an Avon representative and worked at the Solid Rock Book Store in Kearney until her retirement.

She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church .
She was the women’s missionary council president, treasurer and taught children and adult Sunday School classes at the Assembly of God Church. She and her husband were the organizers of the “Keenagers” group at both the Assembly of God Church and Grace Fellowship Church. She was also a member of the Valley Bards Poetry Club of Kearney.

Survivors include her husband, Lee of Kearney ; son Larry Lockwood and wife Judy of Framingham, Mass; daughters Linda
Standage and husband Monte of Gibbon, Karen Johnson and husband David of Gibbon, and Merrilee Thomas and husband Sam of Beaver City, NE; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister and one granddaughter.

Chester "Chet" L. Bowman
Kearney Resident

Chester “Chet” L. Bowman, 76, of 3207 20 th Avenue , Kearney , died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney .
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, August 8 at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney with Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling and Rev. Jerry Beltz officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in the Kearney Cemetery .
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Chet Bowman Memorial Fund. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon August 7, 1926 in Arnold , Nebraska to Harry and Harriet (Eastburn) Bowman. He grew up on a farm south of Stapleton , Nebraska and graduated from Stapleton High School in 1944. On May 18, 1947 he married Dottie Beltz in Arnold , Nebraska . He began working in the grain business in Arnold in 1948. He managed elevators in Callaway and Fremont before moving to Kearney in 1965, as Manager of Peavey Grain. In 1991 he retired from Con-Agra as vice president and general manager of the Western Region, including a large export elevator in Kalamah , Washington . He was involved in merchandising grain from Kearney to Asia’s Pacific Rim. He had various farming interests after his retirement and in August 2002 purchased Cargill Grain Elevator in Kearney , which is now B4 Grain.

He served on the Nebraska Executive Committee of the Nebraska Grain Associations, and was a member of the Omaha , Denver and Kansas City Grain Exchanges and the National Grain Trade Council. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church , Kearney Elks Club, Kearney Country Club, UNK Foundation, Past Chairman of Gateway Farm Expo and a member of the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet of Kearney; son, Brad Bowman of Kearney; daughter, Tami Hellman of Kearney; sister, Lois Vosicky of Fairhope, Alabama; grandchildren, Jacy Jones of Overland Park, Kansas, Jolie Bosshamer, Brett Bowman, and Christopher Bowman all of Kearney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Glenn Luce
Kearney Resident

Glenn E. Luce, 81 of 2011 East 34 th Street , Kearney died Wednesday, August 06, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney . Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney . The Revs. Dr. Sam Rathod and John Gosswein will officiate. Interment with military honors will be at the Kearney Cemetery by the VFW Post 759, American Legion Post 52 and the National Guard Unit of Kearney. Visitation will be 4-8 pm, Friday at the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney .
Memorials are suggested to the Glenn and Terry Luce Music Scholarship Fund at UNK. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Glenn was born icon on June 8, 1922 in Grant , Nebraska to Charles A. and Inez (Frink) Luce. He grew up in Central City, NE and graduated from high school there. He attended Kearney State College for 2 years. He entered the United States Army on March 5, 1943 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945. On October 7, 1945 he was united in marriage to Edna Bolt. The couple made their home in Kearney . He was employed by the Kearney Hub and Nebraska Job Service.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, V.F.W., American Legion, 1733 Barbershop Chorus and Dixie Land Band.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; daughter, Connie Fie of Kearney; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers; 2 sisters and a son.

Truman Ludlow
Eddyville Resident

Truman H. Ludlow, 82, of Eddyville, died Saturday, Aug. 9th at his residence. A memorial service will be held at graveside at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Chaplain Norval Holtmeier will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the North Platte Veterans Group. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Plains Hospice of Cozad. O’Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon April 10, 1921 at Monument, KS to Frank and Ethel (Pettigrew) Ludlow . He grew up and attended school at Oakley , KS . He entered United States Navy on
Dec. 7, 1941 and served during WWII.

He was united in marriage to Pearl Bayne on Dec. 6, 1945 at Colby , KS . After which the couple lived in Oakley for one year. Later they moved to North Platte where he was employed by Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years.

He was a member of the Eddyville Grace United Methodist Church . He also was a former member of the North Platte VFW and American Legion. Pastimes included traveling in their RV. They would travel to Port Isabel, Texas each winter. They were also members of the Oldtimers R&R Association.

Survivors include his wife of Eddyville, daughter June Ludlow of Lincoln, son-in-law Victor Smith of Lincoln , sister; Goldie Wright of Oakley , KS . Also surviving are 2 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Smith, parents and 2 brothers.

Terry Schroeder
Kearney Resident

Terry Schroeder, 54, of 1304 East 33 rd Street , Kearney , died Thursday, August 21, 2003 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha . Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 26 at First Christian Church in Kearney with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Interment will be at the Kearney Cemetery .

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 on Monday at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials will be established. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon on May 2, 1949 in Kearney to Leo and Orva (Robinson) Schroeder. He grew up in the Elm Creek/Overton area. He graduated from Overton High School and attended Kearney State College. He married Sharon Burkey on April 5, 1970 in Elm Creek after which the couple made their home in Kearney . He was owner and operator of Platte Valley Glass since August 1976.

He was a member of the church, Eagles, Kearney Chamber of Commerce, and on the Board of Directors of the Kearney and Nebraska Bowling Associations. He was active in the Kearney High Parents Association. Terry and his wife, Sharon were active foster parents for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Kearney; sons, Christopher Schroeder, and Tony Cumpston both of Kearney , and Corey Cumptson of Sumner, Tim Coulter of Littleton , Colorado ; daughters, Kerstin Schroeder of Kearney , and Diana Fleming of Littleton , Colorado ; brothers, Dan Schroeder of Elm Creek, and Mick Schroeder of Johnson Lake, 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Betty L. (Wiles) Helmick
Kearney Resident

Betty (Wiles) Helmick, 80 of Kearney, died Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at St. Luke’s Good Samaritan Village. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 30 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Interment will be at Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney and continue one hour prior to service time on Saturday. Memorials are suggested to the Church or Kearney Senior Hospitality Center. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon on November 13, 1922 in Odessa, Nebraska to Arne and Ella (Sear) McElhinny. The family lived in Odessa and later moved to Elm Creek where she graduated from high school in 1940 and lived there until she moved to Kearney. She attended business school in Grand Island. After finishing, she worked at the State Capitol in Lincoln in the Vital Statistics Department. Then she worked for the Signal Corps office in Washington D.C. and in Philadelphia, PA. On October 6, 1946 she married Glen E. Wiles, the couple lived in Kearney and had three children. In 1961, she started worked at Ruter’s – ladies ready to wear. Glen passed away on June 6, 1976. On March 24, 1984 she married Lowell D. Helmick. She retired from Ruter’s on April 1, 1996.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of VFW auxiliary, and a member of Eagles auxiliary all of Kearney.

Survivors include her husband, Lowell of Kearney; son, Dennis J Wiles and wife Jan of Omaha; daughter, Glenda K. Frasier and husband Charles of Grand Island; daughter in law, Marcia Wiles of Grand Island; step-daughter, Susan Shonka and husband Bill of Norfolk, NE; step-sons, Larry Helmick of Kearney, NE, David Helmick and wife Teresa of Roseland, NE, and Scott Helmick and wife Sheri of Valley, NE; 10 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Glen; parents; son, Randy Wiles; and step-granddaughter, Jill Helmick.

Betty Connell
Kearney Resident

Betty J. (Whitney) Connell, 75, of Kearney, owner of Grandpa’s Steakhouse in Kearney, died Tuesday, Oct. 14th at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, Oct. 20th at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev. Charles Torpey will officiate. Interment will be in the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 P.M., Sunday at the church with a prayer vigil at 7 PM. Memorials are suggested to Kearney Catholic High School Foundation-Bud and Betty Connell Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society or the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon on Oct. 26, 1927 in Kearney to Wert D. and Mary (Cassidy) Whitney.

She attended Kearney Public Schools and was a 1945 graduate of Longfellow High School. She was married to Howard “Bud” Connell in Grand Island on May 1, 1948. She worked for Safeway District Offices. In 1952, she and her husband opened and operated Grandpa’s Steakhouse until her death. Her husband died in 1993.

She was a member of the church, American Legion and VFW Aux., Nebraska Restaurant Association, Kearney Eagles and DOES. She was also was named in Who’s Who of Nebraska, and an honorary member of K.V.F.D.

Survivors include son; Jim of Tucson, AZ, daughter; Elizabeth “Libby” Merrifield of Kearney, 2 grandchildren; Kristen and Keyton, brothers; Carl Whitney of Kearney and Edward Jones of Carlsbad, CA, sister; Ollie Dady of Kearney.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 brothers, 1 sister and 2 step-sisters.
