Kearney Resident
Adam E. (Pete) Bartusiak, 95, of Kearney, died Monday, Sept. 15th at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Friday ath the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Charles Torpey will officiate. Interment will be at the Kearney Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
He was born
on December 23, 1907 in Elyria, Nebraska to Peter and Anastasia (Furtak) Bartusiak. He attended school at Ft. Hartsuf, Nebraska. In his early years he worked as a mechanic in the Chevrolet Garage in Ord. He was married to Josephine Kaslon in Ashton, Nebraska on April 3, 1931. She died on May 1, 1952. He moved to Manitou Springs, CO and worked in Fort Carson, CO during WWII where he also worked as a mechanic. He moved to Renton, WA where he owned a grocery store. He moved back to Nebraska during the mid 1940’s where he owned his own mechanic shop. He was married to LeNora Cafferty in Nevada in 1954. She died in 1975. During the 1970’s he was the owner of the Little USA service station west of Kearney. He was married to Linda Slater in Las Vegas in 1977.
He was a member of the Travelers Protective Associations (TPA). His pastimes included; traveling, carpentry and loved to tinker.
Survivors include his wife of Kearney; son, Ray and wife Lois of Littleton, CO; daughter, Arlene Buchanan and husband Bob of Seattle, WA, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 wives, his parents, a granddaughters, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Leonard A. Hurt
Grand Island Resident
Leonard A. Hurt, 79, of Ashton died Saturday, September 13, 2003 at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island. Memorial services were Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Wood River, with Rev. Rose Bartleson officiating. There was no visitation. Burial was at the Wood River Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Wood River. Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River handled the arrangements.
Leonard was born
on February 16, 1924 on a farm near Rockville, Nebraska the son of Rudolph and Rose (Steckley) Hurt. He grew up on a farm near Ashton and graduated from Ashton High School in 1942. He entered the United State Navy in January of 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 31, 1946. He attended Refrigeration and Air Conditioning School in Omaha. In 1948 he trained and became a Journeyman Iron Worker and worked on various iron construction projects in Nebraska and surrounding areas. He continued in iron work until returning to the family farm in 1954.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Rathman on December 29, 1954 in Grand Island, after which the couple lived on a farm near Ashton. Leonard retired from farming in 1976 but continued to live on the family farm.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 108 in Ashton and Disabled American Veteran’s organization.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hurt of Grand Island; son Dan and wife Roxanne Hurt of McCook; daughters, Judy and husband Gary Markvicka of Manhattan, KS; Pam and husband Ralph Urbanski of Kearney; and Shelly and husband Jay Sorensen of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, and brother, Gilbert of Bellevue.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Hurt; and sister, Caramel Morehead.
Laverne Jess
SCOTIA - Laverne Jess, 94, of Scotia died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Revs. Bruce Phillips and Martha Voigt will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jess was born
Oct. 14, 1913, on the family farm south of Scotia to John and Eva (Maxwell) Jess.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laretta Wells.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Laurine Jess of Scotia; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Mary Ann Jess of Johnson Lake, Randy and Debbie Jess of Tobias and Rodney Jess of Scotia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tom Fields of Sublette, Kan., and Judy and Leonard Williams of Grand Island; and a son-in-law, Ron Wells, and his wife, Bonnie, of Cotesfield.
Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jess graduated from Scotia High School in 1931. He moved to Wyoming in 1933 to work in the oil fields.
He was united in marriage to Laurine Nelson on March 10, 1936, in Hot Springs, S.D. They moved back to the family farm in 1942. To this union was born
six children, Larry, Laretta, Janet, Judy, Randy and Rodney.
Mr. Jess farmed until 1959 when he bought the Scotia hardware store. In 1968, he sold the store but continued his heating and air conditioning business.
He had numerous hobbies. He enjoyed playing cards and telling stories. He loved being around his family, especially during the holidays and birthdays. He also enjoyed family reunions and being around his relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Scotia United Methodist Church and the Rock Club of Grand Island.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Joe Einspahr; one great-grandson, Jacob Canfield; two sisters, Jessie Yost and Bernice Jess; and a brother, Elton Jess.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia Methodist Church or to the Scotia EMTs.
Fern Young
Bertrand resident, 76
BERTRAND — Fern M. Young, 76, of Bertrand died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand with the Rev. Harlan Meyer officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Bertrand.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
Memorials are suggested to Methodist Homes in Holdrege or the Bertrand Cemetery Fund.
She was born
Jan. 4, 1924, at Smithfield to William and Edith (Wortman) Vinzant. She attended school in the Smithfield/Bertrand area and graduated from high school in 1941.
On May 12, 1942, she married LeRoy Brell Young in Lexington. She taught school at Ash Grove for four years. She also worked on the farm and at Plectron in Overton for several years. Her husband died on Sept. 17, 1971.
On Nov. 14, 1974, she married John Young at Bertrand. He died on March 15, 2000.
She had enjoyed her family and their visits.
Survivors include her sons, David and Dale, both of Bertrand; daughters, Carol Cole of Bertrand and Diane Wieg of Lincoln; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; stepson, Ronald of Clearwater, Fla.; and stepdaughters, Joann Weston of Lincoln and Marilyn Allison of Des Moines, Iowa.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by an infant brother and two infant sisters.
Teresa Hogan, 100
GREELEY Teresa A. Hogan, 100, of Greeley died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley.
Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church, with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters rosary and a 7 p.m. wake service.
Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Anderson, 92
ST. EDWARD - Mary N. Anderson, 92, of St. Edward died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward, with the Rev. Glen Holtz officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.
Mrs. Anderson was born
Dec. 27, 1914, in St. Edward to Joseph and Bertha Weakley Carter.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Oscar Eckland and Axel Anderson, and one infant son.
Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter and son-in-law, Lee and Paul Cressman of Mercer Island, Wash.; a son, Robert Eckland of St. Edward; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Beverly Lammert Eckland of Las Vegas, Ron and Jan Eckland of Cummings, Ga., and Rich and Robin Anderson of Columbus; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Werner of St. Edward.
Edward A. Whaley, 85
KEARNEY - Edward A. "Tiny" Whaley, 85, of Kearney died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kearney Church of Christ, with Mr. Smith Kite officiating. Burial will be in Kearney Cemetery with military rites at the grave by V.F.W. Post 759, American Legion Post 52 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Group.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Whaley was born
Aug. 15, 1922, at Cozad to Guy and Laura (Elliott) Whaley.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Voneta of Kearney; four daughters and three sons-in-law, May Irene and Lyle Godfrey of Garden City, Kan., Gloria and Jim Smith of Grand Island, Elizabeth and Elton Schmidt of Belton, Mo., and Kimberly Whaley of Lincoln; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sheri Whaley of Kearney; a sister, Marjorie Carman of Imperial; three brothers, Harry of Ontario, Idaho, Robert of Grand Island and Emery of Stanton, Calif.
