Gertrude Andrews, 87

SANDY, Utah - Gertrude E. (Gee) Andrews, 87, of Sandy, Utah, formerly of the Palmer and Central City areas, died at Atria Assisted Living in Sandy on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. Doug McHargue officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery near Palmer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Andrews was born icon July 27, 1920, in Palmer to Truman Alvah and Etoile (Colburn) Gee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Andrews on Sept. 17, 2005, and by infant twin daughters, Betty Jane and Bonnie June.

Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Samuel J. Andrews of Castle Rock, Colo., Michael T. and Tanis Andrews of Draper, Utah; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn J. and Mark Schuck of Dayton, Wash.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Dwayne Killion of Kearney and Suzanne and Russ Schmaljohn of Maryville, Mo.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jay and Billie Gee of Central City and Lyle and Darlene Gee of Palmer; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Leth of St. Paul.

Also left to cherish her memory are nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Palmer High School in 1937 and then attended the American School of Business in Omaha.

Gertrude worked as a secretary for F.A. Wellman Commission Company in Omaha, then as secretary in the office of the vice president and general manager of Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Omaha.

In the service during WWII as a WAC, she served as secretary to the director of personnel at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver from March 8, 1945, until June 26, 1946.

Gertrude E. Gee and Thomas L. Andrews were united in marriage on June 2, 1946, in Palmer. They made their home in Boulder, Aurora, and Denver in Colorado.

Gertrude worked as a clerk for the Colorado and Southern Railway Company for the Chief Dispatcher and Trainmaster.

For eight years she worked as a secretary at Denver Boys Inc., working with youths. She then served as secretary to the head minister of Montview Bouleard Presbyterian Church in Denver. She retired after 10 years with Denver Juvenile Court, where she served as Court Clerk and Secretary to the presiding judge. After retiring in 1977, Tom and Gertrude moved to Palmer, where they lived on the family farm until 1997, when they moved to Central City.

Gertrude enjoyed crafts and hobbies, but her special interest was in making quilts for many members of her family, including many nieces and nephews. Her quilt-making totaled 336 while living in Nebraska. She was a member of Cover Lovers Quilt Club, PAL Extension Club, and Palmer Women's Club for many years.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Wayne and Richard Gee; and a sister, Virginia Leth.

Kenneth Eggleston, 81

OCONTO - Kenneth Lee Eggleston, 81, of Oconto died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007 at Callaway District Hospital in Callaway.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Oconto Community Center, with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Masonic rites will be included. Burial will be in the Oconto Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 4 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Visitation with family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Oconto Methodist Church, with a family and friends prayer service at 7.

Mr. Eggleston was born icon Aug. 4, 1926, on Ryno Table in Custer County to Elijah Luke and Zelda Grace (Hemphill) Eggleston.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Beulah; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Sandra Eggleston of Oconto; a daughter, Debra Mayor of Broken Bow; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen and Myrna Eggleston of Lexington, Charles and Vicky Eggleston of Gothenburg and Lloyd and Sandra Eggleston of Broken Bow; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lavonne and Gene Oxford of Broken Bow, Lorraine and Delbert Rogers of Franklin, Judy and Maynard Struempler of Oconto and Jane and Nick Liakos of Lawrence, Kan.; five sisters-in-law, Violet Eggleston and Wanda Eggleston, both of Oconto, Darlene Forster of Smithfield, Va., Coryell and Ruth Magoon of Lexington; three brothers-in-law, Roger Casey of Houston, Clifford Martin of Lexington and Roger Martin of Eddyville.

Teresa Hogan, 100

GREELEY - Teresa Hogan, 100, of Greeley died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at Greeley Care Home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Revs. Robert Matya and John Cook will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the church, with a Catholic Daughters rosary at 4 and a wake service at 7.

Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Hogan was born icon Sept. 11, 1907, at Greeley to John A. and Ellen "Nell" Taylor.

Survivors of the immediate family include a sister, Angela Matya of Cedar Rapids.

Other survivors include nieces and nephews.

She received her elementary education at Greeley Public Schools and graduated from Greeley High School. Teresa continued her schooling by attending Duschene College in Omaha.

Upon completing her schooling, Teresa began working for the Lanigan & Lanigan Law Firm in Greeley. She later moved to Omaha, where she worked for the IRS until the spring of 1948, when she returned to Greeley. She worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of Lanigan & Ondracek until retiring in the late 1980s.

Teresa was an active and lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. She was also an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Altar Society and American Legion Auxiliary.

She entered Greeley Assisted Living in August of 2002, and later entered Greeley Care Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Eileen Troutman; and one brother, John J. Hogan.

Charles Hoops, 89

Charles E. Hoops, 89, of Grand Island died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Schuyler City Cemetery at Schuyler.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hoops was born icon May 15, 1918, at Richland to Clyde and Frances (Hart) Hoops.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Hoops.

Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Gerald Miller of Lincoln; a brother, Richard Hoops of Sanborn, Iowa; and a sister, Joyce Petersen of Dakota City, Iowa.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Brent Miller and family of Silverdale, Wash., Brad Miller and family of Giltner, and Ciji Shields and family of Houston.

He worked on the family farm near the Platte River along Hwy. 281 (now owned by Crane Meadows) until he married Della Holder on Dec. 28, 1938.

Charles then worked as a switchman for the Union Pacific Railroad until an accident in 1944 that took his leg. After recovering, he moved to Janesville, Wash., and started the Janesville Livestock Auction.

He later began Hoops Livestock Barn in Humboldt, Iowa, which he ran with his father, Clyde, and his brother, Bill. In the mid- '50s he was a livestock dealer in Bethany, Mo. In 1957-58 he owned the Bottle Shop in McCook. From May 1958 until January 1960, he owned another livestock sales barn in Mobridge, S.D.

A lake project put the land under water, so Charles moved his family back to Bethany, Mo., to build a fourth livestock auction company. In 1962, he settled his family in Grand Island. He worked as a car salesman, was a dispatcher for the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, and owned Star Liquor until he retired in 1975.

Charles was a member of the Masons, Eagles and Platt-Duetsche Society.

Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River and the Diabetes Association.

LaVern Gawrych, 61

ST. PAUL -- LaVern W. Gawrych, 61, of St. Paul died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at the Central City Care Center in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with a vigil service at 7. Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gawrych was born icon on July 11, 1944, at Loup City to Walter and Bertha (Papiernik) Gawrych.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Linda Gawrych of St. Paul; four daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda Gawrych of Waterloo, Becky Harvey of Papillion, Kathy and Gary Ewers of Columbus and Pam Schutz of Central City; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Julie Gawrych of Norfolk; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Jackie Gawrych of St. Paul; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Louise and Karl Kulwicki of Loup City, Elizabeth and James McElligott of Omaha and Lorraine Ferguson of Grand Island; and a sister-law, Edith Payne of St. Paul.

He also leaves to cherish his memory eight grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

LaVern attended St. Francis parochial school in Ashton and graduated from Ashton High School in 1962.

He was united in marriage to Linda Crossman on Aug. 11, 1962, at Ashton. The couple first lived in St. Paul where he worked at various places in the community. In 1976, the couple moved to St. Libory when they purchased the Lone Tree Service, which they operated until 1984.

He worked for Berkley Pump/Sta-Rite Industries in Grand Island for 18 years and ran LaVern's Lawnmower Repair for many years. In 2002, he moved to the Central City Care Center, where he lived the rest of his life.

He loved to hunt deer, play cards and spend time with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was a board member of the former Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Bill Schutz; an infant grandson, Christopher Gawrych; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Madison Johnston; a brother, Jerome Gawrych; and a brother-in-law, Bill Ferguson.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Nathan H. Lutes, 79

CENTRAL CITY - Nathan H. Lutes, 79, of Central City died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview United Methodist Church in Central City, with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial in Lone Star Cemetery near Ringgold will follow a 3:30 p.m. service at Hall Church near Ringgold.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City.

Mr. Lutes was born icon Jan. 24, 1928, at Sidney to Louis and Ernestine (Hanna) Lutes.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Joyce Lutes; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Ruth Lutes of Omaha and Daryl and Jeanne Lutes of Grand Island; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Warren Crouse of Hastings, and Kristi and Michael Jauken of Fort Collins, Colo.; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Vernon and Pat Lutes and Keith and Alice Lutes, all of Tryon, Ernest Lutes of Hartford, Wis., and Loren and Janice Stout Lutes of Glen Rose, Texas; and five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Susan Shimmin of Cloquet, Minn., Inez and Jim Fattig of Wallace, Phoebe and Frank Martin of Sun City West, Ariz., Olive and Stan Gurney of Burwell and Esther and Tom Harmon of Pierre, S.D.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren.

Nathan grew up in the Sidney area until he was 9 and then moved to Stapleton. He graduated from high school in 1946. He also attended North Central Bible College.

He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 19, 1950, serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged Nov. 19, 1952.

Nathan was united in marriage to Joyce L. Jameson on Dec. 28, 1952, at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Thedford.

The couple lived nine years in Minneapolis, where Nathan attended North Central Bible College and pastored for four years. Then he pastored in Lyons for seven years.

The family moved to Central City in 1969 so the children could attend Nebraska Christian Schools.

Nathan worked for Dean Christensen, Roy Glynn, and Butch Thompson. He retired in 1993, but continued to raise cattle, garden and write poetry. He served God in preaching and teaching Sunday school.

He was a member of the Assembly of God church and greatly enjoyed ministering and teaching at Fairview United Methodist Church and Zion United Methodist Churches.

Nathan enjoyed working for the Lord 12-12 years before he suffered a massive heart attack and had five bypass surgeries. He felt God allowed him to live 12-12 more years because he needed him to do ministry work.

Nathan was a great student of the Bible and an excellent teacher. Many enjoyed his poetry books and readings at nursing homes.

He enjoyed hunting mule deer and fishing at Prairie Creek. He was a quiet man, but spoke appropriate words of wisdom.

He loved his family and grandchildren and leaves many friends and loved ones behind. He loved animals of all kind and was known as an outstanding cowman.

His gardening abilities were excellent and many people enjoyed the fruits of his labor. Flowers were seen all over the yard and garden, some of them being used in the casket piece for his funeral.

He greatly appreciated his 10 years of walking at cardiac rehab at the YMCA in Grand Island. He walked 11,500 miles and made many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Martin and Stephen; and a sister, Flora Connell.

Memorials are suggested to Nebraska Christian Schools.
