Bernice Lock

Bernice Lock, 86, of Central City, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City. Services will be Friday, January 18, 2002 at 10:30 A.M at Wagner Funeral Home with the Reverend Joy Savage officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 18, 2002 from 9 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Bernice was born icon on April 14, 1915 to George and Amanda (Paustian) Ehlers in Chapman, Nebraska. She grew up in the Chapman area and attended Chapman schools. On April 1, 1950, she married Edwin James Lock in Hastings, Nebraska. After which, the couple made their home on the Lock farm south of Central City. They worked together all their married life, raising crops, gardens, chickens, cattle, and fish. They are remembered by many as the "egg suppliers." They prided themselves on fine quality in all their produce.

Bernice was a great cook and baker. Her pies were a delight! She joined her husband in deer hunting and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor activities offered by their pasture, lakes, and river front property. The handwork, knitting, crocheting, needlework, garment making, and crafts were a source of enjoyment for her and for the individuals that received them. She and Ed had a lovely rose garden. The couple took great pride in being a Pioneer Farm Family. Mr. Lock died in 1988. Bernice remained on the farm and then moved to Merrick Manor for two and a half years and spent the remainder of her life in Long Term Care.

She is survived by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 sisters - Alma, Laura, Edna; five brothers - Willie, Hugo, Ralph, Earl, and Floyd.

Bernice M. Steele

Bernice M. Steele, 94, of Central City, died Monday, January 21, 2002, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at 3:00 PM at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Mike Booth officiating. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Steele was cremated.

Bernice was born icon on October 27, 1907 in Clay County, Nebraska to Adam and Dorothea (Wahl) Burbach. She grew up at Stockham and Sutton, NE, and graduated from Sutton in 1925.

She married Francis Steele on February 1, 1938 at Los Angeles, CA. They made their homes in Los Angeles, and Aurora, NE, then retired in Yucaipa, CA in 1979. Francis died on June 22, 1991, and Bernice moved back to Bader Villa in Central City in1994 where she was living at the time of her death.

Bernice enjoyed needlework, traveling and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Valley Lutheran Church in North Hollywood, CA, and attended the United Presbyterian Church in Central City.

Survivors include her two daughters and son-in-law’s, Diane Clayton and husband Gary of Central City, NE; and Michaela Nelson and husband Wayne of Fresno, CA; three grandchildren, Sheri Clayton, Kristen Clayton, and Andrea Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Rueben and Paul Burbach.

Ervin W. Blauhorn

Ervin W. Blauhorn, 88, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at his home in Central City. Services will be Saturday, December 29, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. at Archer Zion United Methodist Church near Archer with the Reverend Rich Savage officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 28, 2001 from 5 to 7 P.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Archer Zion United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wagnerfuneral.com.

Mr. Blauhorn was born icon on August 11, 1913 to William C. and Anna M. (Otto) Blauhorn on a farm southeast of Palmer. He went to Rural District 58 through the 8th grade in Merrick County. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. He served in the Army from December 1, 1941 until October 1945. He was in the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

Ervin married Bonnie M. Scharvin on June 22, 1947, at his parent's home near Archer in a double wedding ceremony with his sister Dorothy Blauhorn and Bonnie's brother Frank Scharvin. They lived and farmed near Archer all their married life. Bonnie died in 1997. Ervin move from the farm to Central City in January of 2001.

He served on several boards including School District 43, Merrick County Weed District, Chapman and Archer Telephone Board, Merrick Foundation, several boards in the Zion United Methodist Church. He served as Director of the Archer Co-op Bank. He was chairman of the building committee for the Archer Community Center. He was pleased to see it used so much.

Ervin liked the farm and watching crops grow, traveling, enjoyed flowers and gardening, going for coffee, fishing, and bird watching.

Mr. Blauhorn was survived by one brother- Orville (Barbara) Blauhorn of Palmer, NE; four sisters- Mildred Scarborough of Palmer, NE; Dorothy Scharvin of Oxford, NE; Edna (Thomas) Shull of Central City, NE; Ina Jean (Charles) Giles of Broken Bow, NE; one sister-in-law Helen Blauhorn of Central City, NE

He was preceded in death by his wife; one brother- Elmer Blauhorn; two infant sisters, and 3 brother-in-laws.

Taylor M. Grieves

Taylor M. Grieves, 2 months, of Central City, died Sunday, December 9, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13, 2001, at 10:30 A.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Deacon Robert Flesch officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Taylor was born icon October 3, 2001 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Russell Grieves Jr. and Jessica Sumovich.

Frances B. Klanecky

Frances B. Klanecky, 100, of Burwell, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 7, 2001, at 10:30 A. M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell with the Father Bernard Berger officiating. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 6, from 5 to 7 PM., with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Wagner Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Klanecky was born icon July 4, 1901 in Columbus, Nebraska to Vaclur and Barbara (Wachal) Klanecky. She grew up near Sargent, and received her education at Phillipsburg School District No. 36, four miles east of Sargent.

Frances married Edward Klanecky on September 23, 1919 at the Geranium Catholic Church west of Ord. The couple lived east of Sargent until 1935 and then moved to Sargent where they operated a grocery and meat market until 1960. They lived there until 1976 and then moved to Burwell where they continued to live until the time of her death.

Mrs. Klanecky was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church Altar Society and Con Fraternity of Christian Mothers. She also enjoyed singing in the Sargent Church Choir. Frances hobbies included gardening, cooking, sewing and playing cards. She loved visiting with friends and having family come to visit her for the holidays.

Survivors include her son Edwin, and wife Dorothy Klanecky of Hastings, NE; three grandchildren, Lester (Sandy) Johnson of Lincoln, NE; Shirley (Don) Farlee of Grand Island, NE; Sharon Nolte of Hastings, NE; four great grandchildren, Kim (Trent) Wagner of Archer, NE; Todd (Nicole) Farlee of Raeford, NC; Craig Farlee of Grand Island, NE; and Justin Nolte of Lincoln, NE; and one great great-granddaughter, Taylor Jo Wagner.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, daughter, Evelyn Johnson, brother, James Klanecky, sisters, Elma Lukesh and Mary Brim, and grandaughter, Barbara Johnson.

Frederick H. Ewoldt

Frederick H. Ewoldt, 71, of Silver Creek, died Saturday, November 10, 2001 at his home. Graveside services will be Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Reverend Bev Minor officiating the 11 a.m. services. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Ewoldt was born icon on September 14, 1930 to Frank E. and Alvina H. (Niedfelt) Ewoldt in Grand Island, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm near Grand Island. On December 12, 1954 he married Lillian M. Eisenmann in Grand Island. The couple made there home in Grand Island where Mr. Ewoldt worked as a welder for the Ordinance Plant. In 1964, the couple moved to Lincoln for a year and then back to Grand Island. In 1970, they moved to Lexington, Nebraska where Fred worked for Valley Sales (now known as Behlen). Then in 1990, the couple moved to Columbus and Mr. Ewoldt worked for Behlens. In 1991 the couple moved to Silver Creek where Fred retired.

Mr. Ewoldt was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was also a member of the Eagles Club in Grand Island. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping, building bird houses, catching snapping turtles, and spending time with his grandsons.

He is survived by one son- Roy (Wanda) Ewoldt of Cozad, NE; one daughter- Nannette “Dee” Gass and Butch Way of Silver Creek, NE; four grandchildren- Corey Crites, Nick Ewoldt, Doug Ewoldt, and Garrett Gass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son- Daniel Ewoldt; one sister- Virginia Anderson; two brothers- Kenneth and Harold Ewoldt.

Kenneth E. Larson

Kenneth E. Larson, 77, of Central City, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Friday, November 2, 2001, at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Father Willys Neustrom officiating. Inurnment will be at the Central City Cemetery.

Ken was born icon in Central City, Nebraska, September 1, 1924, to Irl and Mildred (Benson) Larson. He grew up and received his education in Central City, and graduated from Central City High School. In November of 1942, he joined the Navy and was assigned to the Naval Air Corp, Operating first, anti-submarine patrol from Cuba up the coast to Virginia, next serving in Navy B-24 s (VPB-117) the first radar night patrol bombing squadron in the Navy, serving on Tinian in the Marianas, night bombing Iwo Jima, then Tacoban Air Strip on Letye, Philippine Islands, patrolling the area north to Formosa, later operated off the air strip on Mindora, Philippine Island patrolling the China Sea to French Indo China (now Vietnam).

Returning to the states in 1945, he married Lorraine Snyder on June 10, 1945, and of that union three children, James Michael, Peggy Ann and Jo Anne, were born.

After graduating from Grand Island Business College, Ken worked for Swift & Co. as an office manager for 5 years, returning to Central City in 1952 working for his father and uncle in Larson Chevrolet, purchasing the dealership in 1956 along with his cousin Wayne Larson, purchasing Wayne s portion in 1962.

Ken's wife, Lorraine, died in 1980. Selling his dealership in 1984, he married Shirley Folbrecht and moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he received his Real Estate sale license in 1985, his broker license in 1991 in which year they returned to make their home in Central City, and he received his real estate appraisers registered license, in 1992, upgraded this to licensed appraiser in 1995. He operated Larson Appraisals along with his wife who is also a licensed real estate appraiser.

Ken is a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Central City. His hobbies include riding his tractor, his yard work and planting trees. He enjoyed flying his own plane, building and traveling.

Survivors are his wife Shirley, son James of Central City, NE; two daughters, Peggy (Dan) Wieseman of Osceola, Ne; and Jody (Dave) Schaecher of Baldwin City, KS; step sons, Michael (Joan) Folbrecht of Lincoln, NE; and Douglas (Barb) Folbrecht of Greenfield, Indiana; stepdaughters Joette (Mark) Kapke and Lea Ann (C.J.) Johnson of Lincoln, NE; Jill (Timm) Hanke of Columbus, NE; eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

David H Buller

David H Buller, 77, of Clarks, died Friday, October 26, 2001 on his farm at Clarks, Nebraska. Memorial services will be Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at 2:00 PM at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Reverend Melvin Zichek officiating. There will be no visitation. The burial will be at a later date as Mr. Buller was cremated.

Mr. Buller was born icon January 7, 1924 to Henry P. and Maria (Janzen) Buller in Langham, Saskatchewan, Canada. He grew up in the Henderson, Nebraska area. He completed eighth grade at West District #73 in the Henderson area, but was forced to stop his education and help his family on the farm during World War II. Growing up during the Depression, when you would work all day for a loaf of bread, taught him to be conservative and to “make do with what you have.” He also learned to have a sense of humor. No matter what the situation was, he could always find the bright side and give everyone a smile.

Upon his confession of faith, he was baptized September 3, 1939 in the Blue River by Reverend John R. Barkman. He became a member of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Henderson.

In 1946 during World War II, Dad was part of a crew that took a shipload of cattle and other livestock to Europe to feed the American soldiers. Upon return, he met Elsie Esther Zimmerman during a rollerskating outing, and they married February 20, 1949, at the First Christian Church in York by Reverend G. R. Miller.

They were blessed with two sons, Sidney Eugene and David Duane. Twelve years later, they were again blessed (and surprised) with a daughter, Judy Kay.

After renting farmland near York, Silver Creek, and Central City, David and Elsie purchased their own 320 acres of farmland three miles north of Clarks in 1973. During the winter months, Dad worked other various jobs many years, including building the Central City High School and installing cable boxes throughout the Central City and Clarks area.

David loved farming, and his favorite time of the year was the fall during harvest when he knew that the worries of unpredictable weather that could influence his crop were behind him. He also loved farm animals and enjoyed all the various types at one time or another, including horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep, cats, dogs, and miniature donkeys.

Mr. Buller is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elsie, their three children, and five grandchildren: Sidney and wife Terra and their children Creston and Brooke of Clarks, Duane and wife Carole and their children Brian and Dawn of Clarks, Judy and husband Rhett Hall and son Austin of Seaside California.

He is also survived by three sisters, Anna Wiebe of Beatrice, Sara Regier of Evansville, Indiana, and Tena Brenneis of Hollenberg, Kansas. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry H Buller, John H Buller, and Jacob H Buller.

Richard E. Butt

Richard E. Butt, 66, of Central City, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services will be Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 2 P.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Reverends Glen Kline and Allen Houston officiating. Visitation will be Friday, October 12, 2001 from 6 to 8 P.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. Burial is in the Central City Cemetery.

Mr. Butt was born icon on August 4, 1935 to Fritz and Pauline (Donchesky) Butt in Central City, Nebraska. Richard grew up in the Central City area and attended District 50 and then Central City High School. He married Alice J. Wagner on June 7, 1953 in Archer, Nebraska. The couple made their home in the Central City area and farmed until 1975. He then retired due to health problems and drove a semi truck for Butch Thompson and worked on his cattle ranch until 1977. He then received his education in Alcohol & Drug Counseling. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and helped lead many people to a better life. In 1989, due to severe health problems, he was forced to retire.

His greatest love was his children & grandchildren. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, win or lose. He enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting. Bowling was his favorite past-time and he was on several leagues through last May. He even bowled with his oxygen on.

Mr. Butt is survived by his wife- Alice of Central City, NE; three sons- Richard (Sharon) Butt of Imperial, NE, Rick (Wendee) Butt of Central City, NE, Russ Butt of Grand Island, NE; five daughters- Victoria Troestle of Cheyenne, WY, Bonnie (Maryl) Hanson of Fullerton, NE, Susan Butt of Austin, TX, Teena (Nick) Paup of Central City, NE, Connie(Jim) Holmes of Grand Island, NE; two sisters- Dee(Kenneth) Luebbe of Central City, NE and Nadine (Dale) Hilderbrand of Central City, NE; one brother- Roger (Marilyn) Butt of Central City; 18 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and 1 grand cat.

He was preceded in death by his mother Pauline, his father Fritz; one sister- Ernestine Grigsby and Grandparents.
