Alfred G. Sweet

Alfred G. Sweet, 83, of Clarks, died Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at his home near Clarks. Services will be Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 10 A.M. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Central City with the Reverend Brad Rick officiating. Visitation will be Friday, October 12, 2001 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Mr. Sweet was born icon on August 31, 1918 to Alfred and Sarah (Sharman) Sweet in Clarks, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm North of Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1936. On February 10, 1942, Alfred joined the United States Army during WWII. He then married Rita A. Goerl on September 26, 1944 in Grand Island. The couple made their home on the farm near Clarks where Alfred farmed and fed cattle all his life.

Mr. Sweet was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a past President of the Clarks School Board. He was a member of the Voter’s Assembly and a Trustee for St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed attending cattle sales, driving teams of horses, especially for kindergarten kids through Clarks

Survivors include: wife- Rita of Clarks, NE; two sons- Eddie A. Sweet of Clarks, NE and Jack J. (Coleen) Sweet of Clarks, NE; two daughters- Sally A. (Jack) Neel of Clarks, NE and Susan (Eddie) Sweet Grossi of Rohnert Park, CA; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; two sisters- Ethel M. Sweet of Clarks, NE and Alice M. Hirschbach of South Souix City, NE.

He was preceded in death by four brothers- George, Frank, Joe, and Eddie Sweet; and 3 sisters- Ellen Sloan, Florence Morgan, and Lucy Fern Sweet; daughter-in-law - Sue Sweet

Anne Wallingsford

Sheilda Anne Wallingsford, 45, of Chapman, died Monday, September 24, 2001 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Graveside services will be Friday, September 28, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Prairie Creek Cemetery near Archer with the Reverend Curt Ensz officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Creek Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family. Wagner Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wallingsford was born icon on August 28, 1956 in Plainview, Texas to Jerome and Elsie (Hatcher) Wallingsford. She grew up in Clovis, New Mexico and attended Central Community College in Grand Island graduating in 1985 with degrees in nursing and computer programming. She married Dan Lawson on December 16, 1976 in Clovis, NM. After which, the couple moved back and forth to New Mexico and Texas.

Anne was a member of My Family.com, Random Acts of Kindness, and Ancestry.com, which were all genealogy websites. She also loved to ride horses and write poetry.

She is survived by a spouse- Duane Barrett of Chapman; one son- George Stanley of Tulsa, OK; three daughters- Tanya Duncans of Central City, NE; Sarah (Joseph) Remold of Grand Island, NE; Hazel Stanley of Grand Island, NE; one stepson- Daniel Barrett of Denver, CO; one stepdaughter- Michelle (Rod) Fordland of Central City, NE; nine grandchildren; parents- Jerome (Martha) Wallingsford of Matador, TX and Elsie Wallingsford of Panama City, FL; four brothers- Jay (Inez) Wallingsford of Tacoma, WA; Jim (Madonna) Wallingsford of Ervin, TX; John Wallingsford of Matador, TX and Joe Wallingsford of Matador, TX; two sisters- Phyllis Stalls and Carol Wallingsford of Panama City, FL.

Beulah J. Starmer

Beulah J. Starmer, 87, of Clarks died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City. Services will be Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Reverend Richard Fairbanks officiating. Visitation is Tuesday, June 19, 2001 from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wagnerfuneral.com.

Memorials are suggested to the Clarks Methodist Church or Long Term Care Activities.

Mrs. Starmer was born icon on April 28, 1914 to Chauncey and Jessie (Moore) Hare in Schuyler, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm northeast of Schuyler in the Purple Cane area. She was baptized in the Methodist faith. She was educated in rural Schuyler and Schuyler High School. She married Floyd W. Starmer on March 25, 1935 in Schuyler. They lived in the Schuyler and North Bend area for several years and then moved to Washington State and North Platte. In 1950, they moved to Fremont where they lived for fifteen years. Beulah worked at several jobs as a cook. They moved to Grand Island in 1964 and she worked at Hested’s and Woolworth’s. She was a very compassionate listener and volunteer with Al-Anon.

In 1970, the couple moved to North Platte where they remained until 1996 when Mr. Starmer needed to move into a nursing home in Central City. Mr. Starmer died on September 9, 1997. Beulah moved to Clarks in June of 1996 and then moved into Long Term Care in 2000.

Beulah enjoyed cooking, gardening, rodeos, and horse races. She loved to be with her friends and family. She enjoyed spending time with children and especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by on daughter- Sandra (Maurice) Lindgreen of Clarks, NE; 3 grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband- Floyd; one son- Donald Starmer; two sisters- Wylma Cantral and Thelma Harris.

Dustin “Dusty” R. Marker

Dustin “Dusty” R. Marker, 20, of Kearney, formerly of Central City, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, near Hordville, Nebraska, due to a traffic accident. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Bible Church in Central City with the Reverend Gilbert Larsen officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City.

Memorials are suggested to the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wagnerfuneral.com.

Dusty was born icon on July 28, 1980, to Ronda Marker and Lloyd Brittain. He received his education at the Central City Schools. He enjoyed fishing, reading books, working on cars and stereos. He also enjoyed listening to music and spending time with friends and family. He was employed at Carl Whitney Sand and Gravel in Kearney at the time of his death.

He is survived by his parents- Don and Ronda Fishler of Central City, NE and Lloyd and Barbara Brittain of Ohiowa, NE; one brother - Corey Marker of Kearney, NE; two sisters- Crystal and Heather Marker of Central City, NE; two nieces- Shelby Wall and Tanika Marker; two nephews- Nathan Marker and Christopher Brokaw-Marker; grandmothers- Darlene Marker and Alice Brittain of Central City, NE; and a special friend- Josey Roberts of Central City, NE.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Emmett Marker and Merle Brittain; three uncles Robert, Paul, and Emmett Dale Marker; two aunts- Lela M. West and Mary A. Ledoux.

Glen L. McLean

Glen L. McLean, 87, of Grand Island, formerly of Central City, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare Park Place in Grand Island.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. The Reverend Richard Fairbanks will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Pierce Chapel Cemetery near Clarks.

Mr. McLean was cremated. There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. McLean was born icon on July 30, 1913, in Clarks, to Len and Iva (Inbody) McLean. He grew up in Clarks and attended school at Pleasant Hill and then graduated from Clarks High School in 1931.

He married Ruby Haynes. The couple lived in Omaha where he was employed by Martin Bomber Plant and Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1979. He married Lola J. Husman on July 14, 1969, and the couple moved to Central City where they lived for thirty years before moving to Grand Island in 1999.

He was a member of Pierce Chapel Church near Clarks and enjoyed working on automobiles and reading.

Survivors include his wife, Lola of Grand Island; one son, Francis McLean of Littleton, CO; one daughter, Elaine Shea of Omaha, NE; one step-son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Joanne Husman of Wichita, KS; two step-daughters and one son-in-law, Yolanda and Tom Rathman of Grand Island and Sharron Ryba of Lincoln, NE; five grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard McLean.

William B. Pickrel

William B. Pickrel, 74, of Clarks, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 4, 2001, at 10:00 A.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Reverend Richard Fairbanks officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, May 3, from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mr. Pickrel was born icon February 16, 1927 in Fullerton, Nebraska to Henry and Bertha (Harrison) Pickrel. He grew up in Clarks, attending school there and graduating in 1944. During grade school, Bill ran the projector at the local movie house. In high school, Bill began his truck-driving career. His first employer was Booth Transfer of Clarks.

William married Nina Wagner on June 10, 1951. Of this union, 8 children were born. The Pickrel’s would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this June.

After several years of driving for Booth’s, he went on to drive for Delicious Foods Co. of Grand Island. He continued driving for them through many company name changes, including Am-Can Distribution and most recently, Ore Ida. Bill officially retired in 1998, but didn’t stay off the road for long. He was an independent driver for Hay-Dot Farms, Inc. for the past two years.

Bill enjoyed truck driving, playing card and watching sports. He loved visiting with family, friends and neighbors.

Survivors include his wife, five sons, Don (Darlene) Pickrel of Columbus, NE; Alan (Debra) Pickrel of Polk, NE; Scott Pickrel of Grand Island, NE; Tom (Lynn) Pickrel of West Des Moines, IA; Larry Pickrel of Lincoln, NE; three daughters, Karen Schank of Central City, NE; Jeanne Sprenger of Lincoln, NE; Marcy Pickrel of Omaha, NE; twenty three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Pickrel of Shady Cove, OR; and four sisters, Emma Stromberg of Polk, NE; Phyllis Hilderbrand of David City, NE; Norma Pauly of York, NE; and Louise Pickrel of Central City, NE.

His parents, two brothers, Jim and Paul, and two sisters, Kate Brown, Edith Maxson, preceded him in death.

Dorothy M. Larson

Dorothy Larson.jpg (21845 bytes)Dorothy M. Larson, 75, of Central City, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be Monday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City with the Reverend Brad Rick officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Dorothy was born icon on August 24, 1925 near Battle Creek, Nebraska the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Brase) Rodekohr. She grew up on a farm near Battle Creek and attended parochial school there. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1943. She completed college in only three years, receiving a B.S. in Education, cum laude, from Wayne State College. She taught two years in Ponca, NE and 6th grade for four years in Norfolk, NE. A highlight at Ponca was directing a one-act play for county contest and receiving first place. She loved teaching music to her 6th grade class.

She was united in marriage to Donald C. Larson on July 6, 1952, at Battle Creek, NE. The couple farmed north of Meadow Grove, NE until 1958. They then moved to Loup City where Don worked for the Soil Conservation Service. In 1963, they moved to Central City, NE. Dorothy was a homemaker and active volunteer. From 1960-1975, Dorothy taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and directed Christmas Eve programs.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, LWML, and enjoyed making photo albums, playing with her grandchildren and the neighbor children.

Survivors include her husband, three sons, Glenn (Jo) Larson of Henderson, NE; Dale (Elaine) Larson of Garland, TX; Wayne (Janelle) Larson of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Ann (Murray) Ostberg of Omaha NE; Helen (Gary) Krichau of Omaha, NE; fourteen grandchildren; one brother, John David (Donna) Rodekohr of Battle Creek, NE; and six sisters; Marjory (Wayne) Tegeler of Meadowgrove, NE; Helen Wegner of Santa Fe, NM; Artie Russell Summerlin of Tucker, GA; Annette (Melvin) Miller of Battle Creek, NE; Marcy Lee(Jim) Bartee of Norfolk, NE; and Joan (Jerry) Freudenburg of Peoria, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
