F. S. "BUD" DEANS
Chadron

Funeral services for F.S. "Bud" Deans, 79, of Chadron were Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at St. Patrick's Church, with Father Ed Cortney officiating.
Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery.
He died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Chadron Community Hospital.
He was born June 30, 1922, in Dawes County to Henry E. and Emma (Hollinrake) Deans.
He is survived by his wife, Verna J. Deans of Chadron; sons, Larry Deans of Vonore, Tenn., David (Fonda) Deans of Eagle River, Ark., Randy (Teri) Deans of Lexington, Rick (Carol) Deans of Hemingford, Curt Deans of Eagle River, Ark. and Steve Deans of Lincoln; a daughter, Judy Christiansen of Fountain Green, Utah; brothers, Marcus (June) Deans of Woodland, Wash., Everett (Martha) Deans of Chadron and Bernard (Maxine) Deans of Lakewood, Colo.; sister, Virginia Emery of Springfield; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alfred Deans.
A memorial has been established to Chadron Rescue Unit and St. Patrick's Church.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

BETTE M. CARLSON
Bertrand

Funeral services for Bette M. Carlson, 59, of Bertrand were Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Bertrand, with Rev. Dennis Sylte officiating.
Following the funeral service, the body was creamated. A private family inurnment will be at the Immanuel Cemetery in Phelps County at a later date.
She died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
She was born Feb. 1, 1942, in Bertrand one of seven children of Harold Wilbur and Geraldine Stella (Griffith) Clark. She attended school in Bertrand, Elwood, Lincoln and Torrence, Calif.
In 1959, Bette was united in marriage to Jimmy Hodges and they had three children, Marshyl, Marion "Gail" and Marlene.
On Dec. 16, 1962, she was united in marriage to Fredrik H. Carlson at First United Methodist Church in Lexington and the couple had two children, Fredrik "Scott" and Margaret.
Prior to LPN school, Bette was employed by the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. She then graduated from LPN school on May 24, 1974, and practiced nursing in this capacity for several years working at Phelps Memorial Health Center and Christian Homes in Holdrege and the Elwood Care Center. In May 1993, she became an RN and worked at the Bertrand Nursing Home and the Walker Post Manor in Oxford.
She is survived by her husband, Fredrik of Bertrand; three daughters, Marshyl (Steve) Everett of Cozad, Marion "Gail" (Mark) Davis of Omaha and Marlene (Karl) Detmers of Minden; one son, Fredrik "Scott" Carlson and his fiancée, Kim Kirby of Holdrege; nine grandchildren, Stacy (Jeff) Underwood, Steve Everett, Lucas Everett, Melanie Davis, Joshua Everett, Holly, Katie, Emily and Abigail Carlson; two great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Zachary Underwood; five sisters, Twila (Allan) Phillips of Lexington, Norma Henry of Cozad, Connie (Jack) Reeves of Cozad, Charlotte "Jo" (George) Wence of Nebraska City, Linda (James) Carlson of Lexington; one brother, Charles (Sandy) Clark of Lexington and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Margaret Lenore, a granddaughter, Lilly Mae Davis, a brother-in-law, Dan Henry, and a nephew, Ryan Clark.
A memorial has been established in her name.

IRMA BENTON HOFFERBER
Amarillo, Texas

A memorial service for Irma Benton Hofferber, 96, of Amarillo, Texas, formerly of Lexington, will be at 1:30 p.m. today, Jan. 23, 2002, at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, with Mr. Jerry Hofferber officiating.
A private family burial will take place prior to the memorial service.
She died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Craig Methodist Retirement Center in Amarillo, Texas.
She was born Sept. 17, 1905, in Lexington to Fred C. and Cora Benton. She attended high school in Lexington.
Irma lived most of her life in Lexington until 1999 when she moved to Amarillo, Texas.
She married George Hofferber in Geneva in April 1927. They had three children. She operated her own beauty shop located in the home until her retirement in 1964. She was a member of the local DAR chapter many years.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Hofferber of Seabeck, Wash.; grandchildren, Dwight Knox of Tucson, Ariz., Bonnie Gabel of Amarillo, Texas, Daniel Knox of Lexington, Lisa Hofferber Peterson and Jessica Hofferber Dorling, both of Seattle, Wash.; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George, in 1948 and two daughters, Delores in 1991 and Virginia in 1998.
Memorials are suggested to the Dawson County Historical Society.

HELEN J. HOUBORG
Cozad

Funeral services for Helen J. Houborg, 94, of Cozad will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church northeast of Cozad, with Rev. Ray Grieb officiating.
Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be today, Jan. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
She died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad.
She was born Dec. 4, 1907, in Nuckolls County to Pete and Andora (Foged) Rasmussen. She graduated from Cozad High School and worked at the Anderson Department Store.
On Oct. 22, 1930, Helen married Alfred Houborg and the couple made their home on a farm site northeast of Cozad. She continued living on the family farm until the early 1990s, when she moved to Cozad.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was also a member of a garden club, a craft club and a past member of the Rebekah Lodge. Through the years on the farm, she enjoyed raising chickens, gardening and raising flowers. For a number of years, she provided transportation for the ladies of the rural neighborhood.
She is survived by two sons, Robert (Carol) of Cozad and Jimmy "Houby" (Linda) of Gothenburg; a sister, Nina (Carl) Knudsen of Cozad; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, in 1974, a daughter, Leone Marshall, a son-in-law, Jim Marshall, and four brothers, Leo, Oscar, Bent and Dale Rasmussen.
A memorial has been established in her memory.

ROBERT R. CARSON
Kearney

Funeral services for Robert R. 'Bob' Carson, 78, of Kearney will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney, with Rev. C. J. Willis officiating.
Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery with military honors provided by the Kearney VFW Post 759 and the Kearney American Legion Post 52.
Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 24, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and prior to services on Friday at the mortuary.
He died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born Sept. 16, 1923, to Lloyd and Berniece (Bell) Carson at their home near Ord. His mother died at a young age and he was raised by his father and step-mother, Laura Carson. He attended school in Lexington graduating in 1942.
Bob joined the Army where he served in the Philippine Islands and Germany during World War II. While in Germany with the CIA, he was a guard during the Nuremberg Trials. He was discharged as corporal while in Battery B in the 427th Armored Field Battalion in 1945. He served in the Nebraska National Guard Company B 195th Tank Battalion and was discharged in January 1956.
On July 12, 1955, he married Naomi Ruth Wolf in Lexington. They lived in Lexington, Lamar, Colo., and Blair, while he was employed as a chemist for National Alfalfa. In 1962, they moved to Kearney, and he was employed with Guy's Foods and Agrifirst Chemicals before going to Rockwell International, retiring in 1985 due to a disability.
He was a volunteer with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Lexington and Kearney. He also coached youth baseball and soccer. His hobbies included reading, whittling, fishing, camping and traveling. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and attending their numerous school programs, soccer, baseball and softball games, track meets and music recitals.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi Ruth of Kearney; two sons, David and Bob of Kearney; three daughters, Teresa Journey of Kearney, Kerri Harris of Lexington and Deb Thacket of Longmont, Colo.; and a sister, Lois Luce of Portland, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, one brother and one granddaughter.
Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

HARRIET J. PLANTZ
North Platte

A memorial service for Harriet Jean Plantz, 71, of North Platte will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte, with Rev. Dr. Nathan R. Wadenwitz officiating.
Inurnment of her cremains will be in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.
Signing of the memorial book will be today, Jan. 23, 2002, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Odean Colonial Chapel or before the memorial service at the church on Thursday.
She died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
She was born April 3, 1930, near Genoa to Herman Emmanuel and Signe Christina (Kalberg) Nelson. She graduated from Genoa High School in 1947 and got her teaching certificate and taught two years in rural Genoa in Nance County.
Harriet married Neven O. 'Bud' Plantz Feb. 19, 1950, in Genoa at Augustana Lutheran Church. They moved to North Platte in 1953, and in 1956, they moved to Lexington, where they live for 13 years. They moved back to North Platte in 1969.
She was a very active mother and grandmother and was involved in many church and community activities. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and Sarah Circle.
She is survived by her husband, Bud, of North Platte; two daughters, Peggy (Richard) Albright of Columbus and Karma (Lary) Bomberger of Lexington; a son, Greg (Karen) Plantz of Lolo, Mont.; a sister, Pearl Bunde of Hastings; three brothers, Vernon (Alice) Nelson of Grand Junction, Colo., Raymond (Jean) Nelson of Genoa and Merle (Caryl) Nelson of Lake Bluff, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Allisyn (James) Plantz-Becker, Clifford Plantz, Matthew and Kayla Albright, and Zachary and Kelli Bomberger.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Timothy Plantz, a sister, Dorothy Nelson, and a brother, Kenneth Nelson.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested for the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte is in charge of arrangements.

VIRGINIA R. BAACK
Cozad

Services for Virginia R. Baack, 78, Cozad, were Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the American Lutheran Church, Cozad, with Pastor Bruce Berggren officiating.
Burial was in the Cozad Cemetery.
Virginia passed away Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Cozad Community Hospital.
She was born Nov. 17, 1923, at Hebron to William and Loretta (Renner) Hieronymus. She graduated from Bexly High School in Columbus, Ohio, in 1942 and attended Capitol University at Columbus.
On Nov. 25, 1945, she was married to Rev. Ernest Baack Jr. They made their home at Macon and Talmage before moving to Cozad in 1959.
She had been employed at the Tri-City Trib Newspaper and Valley Vending during her time in Cozad. Virginia was a member of the American Lutheran Church, where she was active in the choir and other church activities. Her interest and pastimes included music, cards, bowling and sporting activities.
Survivors include two sons, David (Teena) Baack, Cozad, and James (Catie) Baack, Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Karen (Randy) Devine, Lincoln; two sisters, Miriam (Richard) Boyd and Carol (Dick) Chapman, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa; five grandchildren, Stacy (Tony) Kolbo, Gina (Corey) Jensen, Justin Devine, Tracy (Andy) Goodyear, and Elizabeth Baack; four great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jackson Goodyear, Devin Kolbo and Carissa Jensen.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1968.
A memorial has been established in her memory.

BETTY TOPINKA
Cozad

Funeral services for Betty Topinka, 79, Cozad, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad, with Roger Sloan officiating.
Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, June 5, 2002, at the Berryman Funeral Home.
Betty died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at her home.
She was born Oct. 31, 1922, at Booker, Texas, to Arthur C. and Alda May (Carr) Gregory. She attended school in Oklahoma.
On July 5, 1946, she married Blaine Topinka at Beaver, Okla. They made their home at Forgan, Okla., and Liberal, Kan., before moving to Cozad in 1965. She had worked at Monroe Auto Equipment, Circle S Motel, and the Merchandise Mart, all in Cozad.
Survivors include two sons, Brad Topinka, Gothenburg, and Kevin (Cindy) Topinka, Cozad; one daughter, May (Dennis) Siemering, Cozad; three brothers, Glen Gregory, Beaver, Okla., Bernard Gregory of Arkansas and Arthur Gregory, Nampa, Idaho; one sister, Mary Pugh, Beaver, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Stacy, Patrick, Jeremy, Sherlynn, Nathan, Lacey, Cody and Kayla; eight great-grandchildren, Levi, Dylan, Karly, Treistan, Cope, Caleb, Rileigh and Kayleen.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979, an infant son, Cory, three brothers and one sister.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
