Richard L. Dehning

Richard L. Dehning, 81, of Grand Island, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Tiffany Square.

Private family services will be in Grand Island City Cemetery with the Reverend Randy Fett officiating.

All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard was born icon August 17, 1925, at Louisville, NE to Emil and Gladys (Carey) Dehning. Richard was raised and received his education in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1943. He entered the United States Navy on July 3, 1943, serving during World War II, and was discharged August 16, 1946. He saw duty with Dive Bombing Squadron 87 as an Air Crewman on the Aircraft Carrier USS Randolph in the Atlantic and the Aircraft Carrier USS Ticonderoga in the South Pacific. He received 2 Air Medals and 3 Campaign Stars for his service in the Pacific.

On January 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Shultz in Grand Island.

He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service on May 8, 1967, and on September 30, 1972, was appointed Postmaster at Chapman, NE, where he served until retiring on October 2, 1992.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lorraine; two daughters, Marilyn McHugh of Alda and Dorothy Ferguson of Grand Island; a sister, Dorothea Scott of Surprise, AZ, four grandchildren, Nikki Bradley, Tammy Rapp, Libia Schardt and Adam Ferguson; and four great-granddaughters, Jeris Rapp, Kaleigh Rapp, Shalee Bradley, and Lauren Schardt, one step great granddaughter Devri Bradley, and two great grandsons Jonathan Schardt and Jimmie Lee Bradley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.

Richard was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Platt Duetsche Society, and a Chartered Life Member of the VJW Post 1347.

He had held the offices of President of the Platt Duetsche, Adjutant & Quartermaster & Trustee of the V FW. He had also been Secretary Treasurer of the United Federation of Postal Clerks Local 9 and President of that organization, President of the local chapter of American Postal Workers Union, and President and Editor of the newsletter of the Grand Island Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society.

"Bob" Robert W. Edgar
“Bob” Robert W. Edgar, 79, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at his home in Grand Island.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Cheryl Lamb will officiate. Inurnment will be in the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 3 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the All Faiths Funeral Home.

Bob was born icon October 12, 1927 at Morning Sun, IA the son of Lloyd and Helena (Reid) Edgar. He attended and graduated from the Morning Sun High School in 1945. From September 1946 until March 1948 he served with the United States Army in Korea. He graduated from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania in 1952.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Margaret Long on June 25, 1955 at Beaver Falls, PA.Bob worked for Firestone as a plant engineer in Ohio and Indiana plants from 1952-1961. In 1961 he joined the Sheller-Globe Corporation and worked in the Montpelier, Portland and Grabill, Indiana plants until 1978. In 1978 he moved to Grand Island and worked for Leon Plastics in Alda until his retirement in 1993.

He enjoyed golf, fishing, camping and traveling. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and held all the Lay offices in his lifetime. He volunteered for Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity and was a Boy Scout Leader from 1966-1983. For 10 years he cooked for the ham and bean supper to benefit the PTA of General Shanks Elementary in Portland, Indiana. Mostly, he enjoyed spending time with family and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Margaret, sons and daughters-in-law, Bob Edgar of Lincoln, Bill Edgar and his wife Martha Hakenkamp of Lincoln and Brad and Deonna Edgar of Hastings, NE, daughter Rebecca Knee of Bellevue, NE, brothers James Edgar of Roseville, CA and David Edgar of Norman, OK, a sister-in-law Jean Edgar of St. Louis, MO and grandchildren, Emilie Corbin, Ruth Edgar, Ethan Edgar, Cohen Edgar, Baxter Knee and Dairien Edgar.

His also is survived by his beloved cats, patches, and klondike.

His parents and a brother Sam Edgar preceded him in death.

Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity or St. Francis Hospice.

George Fass
Prayer service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Reverend Onamae Waddel will officiate. Burial of ashes will be in the Wiegert Cemetery.

There will be a time of gathering of family and friends Saturday one hour before service time.

George was born icon June 12, 1936 at Grand Island the son of George and Elizabeth (Waeglie) Fass. He was raised near St. Libory attending country school. He was united in marriage to Marie Heglmeier on June 6, 1970. They made their home in Grand Island where he was employed by MFS York for 24 years.

George went to be with his Lord on Friday, June 22, 2007 at Golden Living Park Place.

Those left to cherish his are his wife Marie, daughters and sons-in-law Melissa and David Brandt of Grand Island, Christine and Kurt Stephens of Ravenna, step daughter and son-in-law Judy and Daniel Sather of Norstrand, MN and Nancy Bucher of Ravenna and 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

His parents and step son Gregg Bucher preceded him in death.

Nancy Pack Fell

Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Catherine Kuschel will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the St. Stephens Columbarium.

All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Nancy was born icon April 13, 1932, in Niagara Falls, New York. She was the daughter of Andrew and Clara Wilson. She grew up and received her education in Buffalo, New York. She was married in May 1951 to Harold Whitney Fell, Jr. She spent her adult years in New York, Texas and Nebraska and recently re-located to Grand Island, Nebraska.

She was an avid volunteer always-seeking ways to help others. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, Texas. She also gave her time at the Women in Need shelter in Greenville and purchased hundreds of stuffed animals, sewed clothes for them and gave them away to the families at the shelter. While in Grand Island, Nancy designed artistic cards “Hats by Nancy” to be sold at fundraisers with proceeds going to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Dominican Republican Mission Team.

Nancy was an artist who enjoyed working with pastels and most recently began working with mosaic glass. Her most treasured artistic moments include making crafts with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family members left to cherish her memory are three daughters and sons-in-law; Kathy and David Stoddard of Grand Island, Nancy and Kevin Gilbert of Hedgesville, West Virginia, and Elizabeth and Clifton Wise of Warrensburg, Missouri; two sons and daughters-in-law; John and Shannon Fell of Big Sandy, Texas and Bill Fell and Amy Kirkpatrick of Big Sandy, Texas.

Nancy was adored by twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild; Jayson Stoddard and Nicholas Stoddard of Hastings, NE, Sarah Hansen and her husband Jared of Grand Island, Robert French of Baltimore, Maryland, Jami Gilbert, Krystal Gilbert and Kevin Gilbert of Hedgesville, West Virginia, Rachel Fell of Shreveport, Louisiana, Jacob Fell of Ore City, Texas, Wade Fell and Hannah Fell of Big Sandy, Texas, Kiersten Wise of Warrensburg, Missouri, and Samantha Stoddard Hansen of Grand Island.

Her sister-in-law, Ruth Fell of Rochester, New York as well as many faithful friends in Greenville, Texas, will also fondly remember Nancy.

Memorials may be made to the Dominican Republic Mission Team c/o St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Grand Island.

Donald W. Fischer
Donald W. Fischer, 76, of Grand Island died on Tuesday, July 24th in Boise, Idaho. He died from complications of hemochromatosis, a hereditary condition he was only diagnosed with 4 years ago. He was surrounded by his wife and children at the time of his peaceful death.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31st at Grace Lutheran Church, 545 E. Memorial Drive. The Reverend Dan Bremer will officiate. Burial will be at the Phillips Cemetery with full Air Force Military Honors.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Don was born icon on January 6, 1931 to William and Ella (Mettenbrink) Fischer. He was raised on the family farm near Phillips, graduating from high school in 1948. After serving in the Air Force he returned to Nebraska, graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1958. He married Marilyn Otto on August 11, 1954 together they had 3 children, Brett, Blake and Barbra. Don and Marilyn originally made their home in Lincoln and later York, moving to Grand Island in 1965. Don worked in sales, he enjoyed his work, traveling and developing many friendships over the years. Don’s life centered around his wife and family. Don was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 40 years, serving in many positions.

Don will be greatly missed by Marilyn his wife of 53 years, sons and daughter-in-law, Brett and Sue Fischer, Blake Fischer, and daughter and son-in-law, Barbra and Darin Osterhout. He is survived by his special grandchildren Jake and Mitchell of Arizona, Travis, Jess J. and Jessica M. of Colorado, and Gabe, Meg and Luke of Idaho. He is survived by his brothers Bill of Omaha and Jerry of Durango, CO, and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded into death by his parents.

Don enjoyed his family, children and later his grandchildren. He always had pictures of his family to share with others. Time with his family was very special, and since his diagnosis in 2003 our time with Don became even more special. These latter years we filled with many many happy memories and we were so blessed to have Don for as long as we did. Don’s goal was to have his entire family together in June and to fish with the boys in South Dakota. We were all thrilled when he caught the biggest fish!

We would like to thank all of the staff at Internal Medical Associates and the staff at St. Francis Radiology Department for their wonderful support and care.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church or Heartland Lutheran High School.

Marie Jeane Freese
Marie Jeane Freese, 85, of Grand Island, died Monday March 26, 2007 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. There will be a family prayer at 10:15 a.m. The Reverend Royce Rinehart will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Jeane was born icon October 24, 1921 at Hastings, NE the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Lofing) Sittner. She was raised and received her education in Hastings graduating from Hastings High School in 1939. She worked for the U.S. Naval Department.

On March 14, 1947 she was united in marriage to Harold Freese in Hastings. They lived in Hastings and Lincoln before moving to Grand Island in 1950.

She is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the church’s Ladies Aid and the eager to learn bible study group. She enjoyed sewing, reading, dancing, being around people and loved laughter.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Harold, daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Jeff Kellogg of McAllen, Texas and Janet and Reed Stockman of Monticello, Iowa, brothers Walter Sittner of Juniata, Nebraska, and Donald Sittner of Hastings, Nebraska and sisters Doris Wigert of Hastings, Nebraska, Sarah Wright of Medford, Oregon and two grandsons Justin Kellogg and Dillon Stockman.

Her parents, brothers Adam Sock and Jacob Sittner, and sister Dorothy Rhodes preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested to Heartland Lutheran High School.

Ronald (Ronnie) L. Gannon
(Ronnie) Ronald L. Gannon, 69, of Kingman, Arizona, formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at his home with his wife and family at his side.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2007 at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Ronald was born icon October 21, 1937 in Grand Island the son of Earl and Ruth (VanWey) Gannon. Ronald attended Giltner and Grand Island Schools. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper from 1957-60.

He worked as project manager at Kershaw Construction, P.J. Carroll Construction for 35 years, Lacy Construction and Galvan Construction.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Charlene Morse Gannon, sons Tim and Tom Gannon, step- daughters and their spouses, Arlee and Jake Campbell and Emily and Mike Mitchell, sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Jim Roberts of Fremont, NE, Marilyn and Mike Galvan of Grand Island, Sharon and Larry Martens of Fremont, NE, brother and sister-in-law Gary and Connie Gannon of Grand Island and step-grandchildren Madison Mitchell and Cobe Sjogren, numerous nieces, nephews and family and friends who will remember him for his great sense of humor and caring attitude. He made many trips to Nebraska to spend time with family and friends who were very dear to him.

His parents and a brother Robert L. Gannon preceded him in death.

Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

Wanda Gosnell
Wanda Gosnell, 49, of Omaha, died Saturday May 5, 2007 at her home following a bout with cancer.

Wanda was born icon November 25, 1957 at Grand Island the daughter of Ronald and Geraldine (Holder) Rathjen. Wanda was raised and received her education in Grand Island and Hastings, graduating from Adams Central in the class of 1976. She was united in marriage to Richard Gosnell on March 10, 1993 in Maui, Hawaii. She worked at Great Plains Packaging in Hastings for 17 years.

She enjoyed decorating, traveling and most of all; she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Reverend John Rathjen will officiate. Cremation will take place following the services.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Richard, step children and their spouses, Tami and John Klimpel of Lincoln, Carrie and Brent Wilson of Lincoln, Kenneth Gosnell and his fiancé Carrie Kress of Des Moines, Maggie Gosnell of Des Moines and Katie Gosnell and her fiancé Nick Flury of Lincoln, her mother and step father Geraldine and Sam Harper of Joplin, MO and father and step mother Ronald and Charlene Rathjen of Grand Island, sisters and brother-in-law, Vickie and Pat Martin of Grand Island and Teri McMullen of Grand Island, brothers Craig Rathjen of Omaha and Ricky Rathjen of Talladega, Alabama, step sister Jessica Rathjen of Grand Island, step brother Henry Rathjen of Grand Island and grandchildren Jake Klimpel, Milena and Braiden Wilson and McKenna Hilton and her mother-in-law and dear friend Mary Krasula of Lincoln.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Phyllis Hall

Phyllis M. Hall, 60 of Grand Island, died Tuesday at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln.

Phyllis was born icon September 15, 1946 at Salina, Kansas the daughter of William and Alvena (Berger) Whitman. She was raised in Salina where she graduated from High School. She was united in marriage to Jerry Utley. Later she married Kenneth Hall, Jr. She moved to Grand Island in 1977 and attended Central Community College.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son Troy Utley, daughters Shira Utley, Lanita Svitak and Brandy Guerrero all of Grand Island, her mother Alvena Strain of Wichita Falls, TX, foster mother Vera Lavonne Smith of Fletcher, OK, brothers Clark and Gary Strain both of Wichita Falls, TX, foster brothers Scott Smith and Bob Hester, foster sister Roxanna Keehn and 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Phyllis was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall.

Her father and brother Mark Strain preceded her in death.
