Merna R. Wood
Merna R. Wood, 75, of Grand Island died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln as a result of complications after heart surgery.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Royce Rinehart will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wood was born icon June 23, 1933, at Ord to Arthur and Clara (Plejdrup) Lange.

Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Everett; two sons, Douglas Mercer of Grand Island and Michael Mercer of Duluth, Minn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Lyle 'Bubba' Conaway of Muldrow, Okla., and Heidi and Mike Moreland of Littleton, Colo.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Virginia Lange; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice Bartlett of Grand Island, Rhoda and Vernon Grauer of Cherokee, Iowa, and Margaret Kling of Los Angeles.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Tracy Conaway of Lake Forest, Calif., Alex Conaway of Indianapolis, Ind., Trayce Moreland of Littleton, Colo., Kris Moreland of Phoenix, Clint Moreland of Boulder, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Merna attended grade school at St. John's Lutheran parochial school at Ord and at Zion Lutheran parochial school in Scotia. She graduated from Ord High School in 1951.

She was united in marriage to Marvin 'Cotton' Mercer on Sept. 9, 1955, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. She was later united in marriage to Max Shelburne of Ogallala. She was united in marriage to Everett Wood on Nov. 3, 1994, in Ogallala.

Merna worked for Northwestern Bell, Pacific Northwest Bell and US West at North Platte, Ogallala, Seattle, Omaha and Grand Island. She retired from the telecom field with more than 34 years of service.

Mrs. Wood was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed applying her skills performing acts of kindness for individuals with developmental disabilities. She especially enjoyed playing bingo, cards, reading, country music and videos. She was known as a great cook and made excellent pecan pie and runzas. Her door was always open and you could count on Merna having the coffee pot on when you stopped by.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clarence Lange.

Memorials are suggested to Goodwill Industries.

Robert H. Zersen
Robert H. Zersen, 77, of Doniphan died Friday, March 21, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Doniphan United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joselyn Tupper will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mr. Zersen was born icon Nov. 28, 1930, at Omaha to Gilbert and Mary Zersen.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Marlene, and three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wade and Holly Zersen of Grand Island, Matt and Mary Zersen and Scott Zersen, all of Houston.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Kelly, Nicole, Tim and Bobby.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nadyne Reich.

Bob was raised in Gresham and moved to California, where he graduated from high school. He attended junior college in California.

He enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Marlene Lehmkuhler on March 10, 1956, at Sidney. They lived in California until deciding to have children and moved back to Nebraska "The Good Life" to raise their family.

They farmed near Doniphan and he retired in 1995. Bob was devoted to his family and community. He worked hard, played hard and had a passion for unique and fast cars. He had a great love for the veterans and the American Legion. He is a member of the Doniphan American Legion Post 300, he served as past State Commander for the American Legion, eight years with the National Executive Committee for the American Legion, member of Sons of American Legion, 40 & 8 American Legion, Eagles, Platt-Duetsche and was a volunteer at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

A memorial fund will be established in memory of Robert.

"Nate" Nathan J. Mattes
“Nate” Nathan J. Mattes, 26, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Henderson Healthcare Services in Henderson as the result of an accident in York County..

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 27, in the Christ Lutheran Church, 1300 North Grand Island Avenue, Grand Island. The Reverend David Wietzke will officiate. Cremation will take place following the service.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Nathan was born icon August 27, 1982 at Billings, MT, the son of Curtis Mattes and Lisa (Butsch) Fuss.

Those left to cherish his memory are his father, Curtis Mattes of Grand Island; his mother, Lisa Fuss of Brookings, OR; brother, Ryan Mattes of Brookings, OR; two sisters, Britni Keen of Fairborn, OH and Noelle Mattes of Grand Island; grandfather, Gilbert Mattes of Grand Island and great grandmother, Irene Blecke of Wayne, NE.

Other survivors include many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Nathan was raised and received his education in the Kansas City area. He was employed by Anytime Freight Inc. of Grand Island at the time of his death.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Nathan enjoyed martial arts, hunting, fireworks and spending time with his father and family.

Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

"Kathy" Mary K. Antle
“Kathy” Mary K. Antle, 74, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, June 09, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Berean Bible Church. The Reverend Scott Friesen will officiate. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Cremation will take place following the visitation.

Mrs. Antle was born icon January 18, 1935 at Leavenworth, Kansas the daughter of Edward and Mary (Goff) Gomerdinger.

Her husband Jesse died on October 11, 2008.

Survivors are sons, Casey Antle of Joplin, MO and Kevin Antle of St. Joseph, MO; daughters and son-in-law, Karen and David McEwen of Citrus Heights, CA and Deanna Antle of Grand Island; daughter-in-law, Barbara Antle of Doniphan; brothers and sister-in-law, Charles and Bev Gomerdinger of Raytown, MO, Dale Gomerdinger of Lane, Kansas and sister-in-law, Shirley Gomerdinger of Olathe, KS.

She is also survived by grandchildren, their spouses and her great-grandchildren, Jason and Deanna Antle and their four children; Stephanie and Dan Hemmingsen and their five children; Katheryn and Jason Keller and their two children; Dustin and Mandi Antle and their child; Keyon and Cori Naghavi; David and Kellie Antle; Teara Daniel and her son; Meagan Antle; Jessica Hoch-Antle and her child; Daniel Antle and Dakota Antle.

Kathy graduated from Lacygne, Kansas High School. She was united in marriage to Jesse Antle on July 3, 1954 in Kansas City, KS. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Kansas City and St. Joseph. They moved to Grand Island in 1973. Kathy was retired from Walmart.

She attended the Berean Bible Church. Kathy enjoyed reading, crocheting and spending time with her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband; son, Steven; parents and brothers, Edwin and William.

Memorials are suggested to either the Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Judy J. Arnett

Judy J. Arnett, 67, of Grand Island, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at St. Francis Skilled Care.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Arnett was born icon March 29, 1941 at Table Rock, NE the daughter of Robert and Zethel (Phillips) Bowman.

Survivors include daughter, Tara Thomas of Grand Island; sons, Jeffery Petersen of Grand Island and Michael W. Graves of Omaha; sister, Beverly Gottula of Franklin, NE and brother, Robert Bowman of Auburn, NE.

Those also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Zach, Chris, Britny, Jose, Miranda, Jacob, Gavin and Moises. Her parents and husband George Arnett preceded her in death.

Judy was raised in Table Rock before moving to Humboldt where she graduated from high school, class of 1958. She married Ronald Petersen in 1958. She later married Terry Graves in 1969 and then she was united in marriage to George Arnett in 1983.

Judy made her home in Grand Island where she was employed by Grand Island City Hall for 31 years before retiring in 2005. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, watching boxing but most of all; Judy enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Memorials are suggested to the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or the Central Nebraska Humane Society.

Eva (Faye) Awtry
Eva (Faye) Awtry, 63, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Golden Living Center at Park Place.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Reverend Matthew Fowler will officiate. Burial of ashes will be in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, NE.

Mrs. Awtry was born icon August 26, 1945 at Grand Island the daughter of Paul, Sr. and Nona (Wilson) Roberts.

Survivors are her husband Lonnie; step son, John Awtry of Hordville; step daughters and son-in-law, Dianna Awtry of Omaha and Holly and Grant Anderson of Plattsmouth; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda Saatmann of Aurora, NE, Wanda and Ralph Crouch of Glenwood, IA and Judy and Bernie Evens of Glenwood, IA.

Other survivors are five step grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Roy Roberts, Bob Roberts, Charles Roberts and Paul Roberts, Jr. and a sister, Goldie Armstrong.

Eva was raised and received her education in Grand Island. She was united in marriage to Lonnie Awtry on December 23, 1982. They lived in Grand Island where Eva worked at Chief Industries for 25 years, Leon Plastics for 15 years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Island Area Cruisers, Camping Clubs, Goldwing Association and Faith United Methodist Church.

Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.

Donald Omar Beason
Donald Omar Beason, 81, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at his home in Grand Island

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 14 at the Grand Island Family Church. The Pastors Duane and Diana Covey will officiate. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Litchfield Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 293, Litchfield.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Beason was born icon November 4, 1927 at Bennett, Colorado the son of Omar and LaVina (Shafaer) Beason.

Survivors are his wife, Wanda I. Johnson of Grand Island; children and their spouses, Cindy and John Davis of Pueblo, CO, Rocke and Marlene Beason of Grand Island, Monte Rex and Lisa Beason of Grand Island and Marty and Laurie Beason of Grand Island; and sister and brother-in-law, Joane and Melvin Blauvelt of Springfield, MO.

Other survivors are fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sally Beason, his parents and sisters, Evelyn and Carol.

Don was raised in Thedford, NE and Ventura, CA where he graduated from high school. He served in the United States Navy from 1945-1948. He was united in marriage to Sally Craven on November 8, 1951.

Don farmed, was a well driller, dragline operator in California; later becoming an Independent Insurance Agent upon his return to Grand Island. He received top producing agent many times over his forty plus year career.

His wife Sally went to be with the Lord in 1998. He later married Wanda I. Johnson on January 16, 1999.

Don with his strong faith led him to be part of the “God Mobile” ministry at county and state fairs. Sharing the Gospel was his passion. He was a member of the Full Gospel Businessman Association, Active in the prison ministry and high school ministry. “A lot of people talk about it, but Don lived it.”

Don with his great family values enjoyed spending time with his children as they were growing up; taking them hunting, camping, fishing and on many wonderful vacations. In Don’s early years he had a great love for horses. His memory will be treasured by many.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Family Church to help with the ministries that Don was so passionate about.
