Elinor "Tad" Harms

Elinor ‘Tad’ Harms, 84, of Grand Island, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Golden Living Center at Lakeview.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with a family prayer service at 10:15. The Reverend Kris Rebentisch will officiate. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harms was born icon June 13, 1924 at Battle Creek, NE the daughter of George and Amalie (Oetting) Eggen.

Survivors are her husband Reverend Robert Harms; children, Constance Halderman of Grand Island, Daniel Graney of Amarillo, TX, Rochelle Sassman of Foley, MO, Bret Harms of Central City, NE and son-in-law, Eugene Howell of Ansley, NE; brothers, Ray Eggen of Florida and Gilbert Eggen of Des Moines, IA; and a sister, Irene Boehnke of Grand Island.

As a child her family moved to Norfolk where they became members of Christ Lutheran Church. Since that congregation had a Christian Day School, Tad received her elementary education there. She then attended Norfolk High School from which she graduated. She received training and learned short-hand, which she used as a secretary for several employers in Norfolk and finally at Monsanto in St. Louis, MO.

She was joined in marriage to Robert Harms June 22, 1947, at Christ Lutheran in Norfolk. Over the course of time they adopted five children, three girls and two boys. One daughter has already been called to glory. They have enjoyed 62 years of marriage.

Since her husband was a pastor, they have lived in several communities. The first was Trinity Lutheran at Lebanon, MO. The next congregation was Zion Lutheran at Pierce, NE; then to Zion Lutheran at Hastings, NE, and finally to Zion Lutheran at Harvester, MO. Upon her husband’s retirement they moved to Grand Island, where they became members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Tad joined the Ladies Aid and the Lutheran Laymen’s League.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Helen M. Harvey

Helen M. Harvey, 86, of Phillips died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Jose Flores will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Harvey was born icon February 27, 1923, at Rockville, NE, the daughter of Charles and Mary ( Burton) Reasland.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son and daughter-in-law, John James Jr. and Sari Harvey of Cairo; a daughter, Beverly Ost of Holdrege and a son-in-law, LeeRoy Hansen of Superior, NE.

Other survivors are 10 grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren and her faithful companion, Cookie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Harvey Sr., on October, 16, 2004. She was also preceded by her daughter, Joanna Hansen; son-in-law, Emerald Ost and brothers, Lloyd and Lewis Reasland.

Helen was raised on the family farm near Rockville and attended country school. She was united in marriage to John James Harvey on March 17, 1954. Following their marriage, the couple farmed until moving to Phillips in 1964. Helen was a homemaker for her husband and family. She loved to garden.

Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

Ryan Alan Hitchler

Ryan Alan Hitchler, 25, of Waverly, NE, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, May 15, 2009 at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. Reverend William Pavuk will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Ryan was born icon December 5, 1983 in Grand Island, NE, the son of Rodney and Sheri (Knuth) Hitchler.

Those left to cherish his memory include his parents; a brother, Alex Hitchler of Grand Island; his grandparents, Elaine Hitchler of Grand Island and Leroy and Rita Smith of Minden.

Also left to cherish his memory are Ryan’s uncles and aunts, Kathy and Bill Bartunek of Grand Island, Rich and Mary Hitchler of North Platte and Doug Knuth of Wood River; numerous cousins and many friends.

Ryan is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Harold (Babe) Hitchler and Bill Knuth.

Ryan grew up in Grand Island, attending Shoemaker, Westridge and graduated from Northwest High School class of 2002. He attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln. He was a grain bin contractor and worked in construction. Ryan was planning on attending University of Nebraska Kearney in the fall.

Ryan enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing X-Box. Ryan was blessed with many wonderful friends. In this time of sorrow, Ryan’s memory will live on through tissue donation that will benefit many others.

A memorial fund will be established in Ryan’s memory.

Richard J. (Dick) Homan

Richard J. (Dick) Homan, 71, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at St. Francis Skilled Care.

A gathering for family and friends will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Monday May 25, 2009 at the

Platt- Duetsche in Grand Island in lieu of a memorial service.

All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dick was born icon September 19, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, NE, the son of Matt and Marcella (Goering) Homan.

He is survived by his wife Johanna; sons Joe and his wife Jackie of Waverly, Paul and his wife Tara of Bellevue, William and his wife Audrey of Lincoln, Robert and his wife Laura of Omaha, and daughter Mara and special son-in-law Stuart Detloff of Alda; sister, Mary Jo Higginbotham of Council Bluffs, IA and sisters-in-law, Julie of Omaha and Sandy of Meadow Grove.

Other survivors include his twelve grandchildren, Zachary, Derrik, Daniel, Taylor, Kelsey, Alyssa, Dana, Julia, Tess, Sawyer, Annika and Nichole and a great granddaughter, Lorelei.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and William and a granddaughter, Emily Bolles.

Dick was raised on the family farm near Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1955. He moved to Omaha in 1958, where he worked for R&C Packing until he was drafted into the Army in 1961. Dick served in Okinawa as a radar operator until his honorable discharge in November 1962. In 1963, Dick started working for Wilson Concrete out of Omaha, then later Sioux City, IA. Dick met Johanna Jordan while working in Sioux City. They were united in marriage on February 27, 1965 at Sutherland, IA. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1965 where Dick continued to work for Wilson Concrete as a salesman for 40 years, until his retirement in 2003.

He was a past president of the Nebraska Concrete Pipe Association and a Chairman of the Agricultural Committee for National Concrete Pipe Association. Dick was also a member of the Engineers Club, Saddle Club, Platt Duetsche and the American Legion.

A memorial fund will be established in his name.

JoAnn Kutschkau Hyde
JoAnn Kutschkau Hyde, 71, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family. .

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, in Trinity United Methodist Church. Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate. Burial will follow in Phillips Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

JoAnn was born icon September 9, 1937 in Denver, CO, the daughter of Leroy and Rhea (Schroll) Kutschkau.

Survivors are her husband, Ron; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhea Jo and Dave Runge of Yankton, SD and Kim and Jeff Mitchell of Grand Island and sister, Janice L. McMullen of Grand Island.

Also left to cherish her memory are four granddaughters, Amanda J. Matthiessen, Jennifer L. Matthiessen, Samantha J. Mitchell and Baileigh M. Mitchell; a great granddaughter, Akela Mae Matthiessen; a great grandson, Noah Roger Matthiessen; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, Karen and Larry Fagen of Hampton, NE, Joann and Lee Gilsdorf of Merced, CA, Dale Hyde of Aurora, NE, Gerald and Dawn Hyde of Parker, CO and Dorothea Hyde of Aurora, NE and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

JoAnn was raised in Grand Island where she graduated from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1957. She graduated from Barnes School of Commerce in Denver, attaining an Executive Secretarial Certificate.

Joann married Larry Remmers in Denver, CO in 1958. In 1970, she married Roland Hyde. During her working career she served as Executive Secretary for a number of organizations, retiring in late 2002 from Saint Francis Medical Center.

She was active in Professional Secretaries International when the chapter was active in Grand Island, including serving a term as President. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the Board of Trustees and enjoyed serving as liturgist for the early morning service.

JoAnn enjoyed spending time with her grand children and great grandchildren, who brought her great joy, as well as many fishing adventures with her husband Ron.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or Saint Francis Medical Center Foundation.

Virginia Ann Jeffres
Virginia Ann Jeffres, 78 of Grand Island died at Skilled Care in Grand Island on Sunday, Feb 8, 2009 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

There will be no visitation. A private service was held by the family at All Faiths Funeral Home officiated by her son, Mike. Mrs. Jeffres was cremated.

Virginia was born icon on Oct 25, 1930 to Harvey M. and Georgia E. (Tempest) Davis in Newman Grove, Nebraska. She attended school in Newman Grove until her senior year, when she graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1948.

She married Eugene W. Jeffres in 1952. They owned and operated the Lazy V Motel for several years and bought and sold real estate in addition to raising a family.

Survivors include her children, Michael E. and Tammy Jeffres of Highlandville, MO; Sandra and Mark Britton of Ft. Collins, CO and Susan and Laura Jeffres of Doniphan, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Donald and Harvey (Dewey) Davis and an infant sister, Lois.

Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

Bethyl Z. Johnson

Bethyl Z. Johnson, 81, of Grand Island, died Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Tiffany Square Center.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. Burial of ashes will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Ms. Johnson was born icon March 15, 1928 at Grand Island the daughter of Henry and Edna (Rockhold) Bremers.

Survivors are her daughters, Michele Downs of Grand Island and Robyn Congrove of Russell, KS and son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Sunshine Johnson of Boulder Creek, CA.

Those also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Anthony Harris, Andrea Harris, Marcie Johnson Higgins, Mercadies Congrove and Mikala Peterson and great-grandchildren, Katie Higgins, Kyle Higgins, Jasmine Harris, Michael Harris and Keli Harris. She is also survived by her faithful “ladies”, Puff and Sable.

Her parents; three sisters, Helen Bremers, Esther Bremers and Avis Frey preceded her in death.

Bethyl graduated from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1946. She married Christ Johnson on April 17, 1951. She started working for the Veterans Administration Hospital in 1956 as a switchboard operator; later serving as a statistician, then moving onto procurement of prosthetics. She retired in 1988 from the VA. She then went to work for NOVA Tech as an office administrator retiring in 1994.

Bethyl made many wonderful friendships playing bingo. Her memory will be treasured by many.

Memorials are suggested to “GRACE” Grand Island Area Cancer Endowment to assist cancer patients and their families.
