"Bob" Robert L. Wissel

“Bob” Robert L. Wissel, 80, of Grand Island, died Sunday, January 4, 2009.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Caroline Price-Gibson will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Hickman Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Wissel was born icon July 11, 1928 at Beatrice, NE the son of Alfred and Rachel (Walfoord) Wissel.

He is survived by his wife Patricia.

Other survivors include a brother-in-law and his wife, William and Donna Lindgren of Gering, NE and a sister-in-law and her husband, Judith and Frederick Gaines of Appleton, Wisconsin and nieces, nephews and many friends.

His parents and sisters, Anita Wissel and Donna Williams and two infant brothers preceded him in death.

Bob was raised in Beatrice graduating from Beatrice High School, class of 1946. He graduated from Doane College in 1951. While at Doane, Bob participated in football, basketball and swimming. He was a member of Doane’s first intercollegiate swim team and taught swimming classes. A football letterman, he played in offensive positions and was a member of the 1950 Nebraska College Conference championship team.

He taught in Tobias and then came to the Grand Island school system, where he would spend the next 30 years. His titles at Walnut Junior High and later Grand Island Senior High, included social studies teacher, counselor, football, basketball and track coach, business manager and athletic director.

He announced Grand Island senior and junior high track meets for 25 years. He worked the finish line for Nebraska State Track meets for 24 years. He was meet director for the second Girl’s State Track Meet. He served on the board of directors and was state president of the Nebraska Athletic Director’s Association. His service earned him state and national honors, including a national federation citation presented at the National Convention of Athletic Directors in 1981; and Nebraska Athletic Director of the Year award.

Bob, who earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska, retired in 1988. He joined his wife in managing Lebesraum Retirement Home, which they owned for more than 30 years.

He and Patricia Lindgren were married on June 18, 1967. They are members of First Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the choir since 1958.

Memorials are suggested to the choir robe fund at the church.

Donald "Jack" Wonka
Donald “Jack” Wonka, 81, of Grand Island, died peacefully on Monday June 1, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2009 in Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Blue Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Wonka was born icon on April 1, 1928 to Frank and Anna (Barry) Wonka at Rosemont, NE.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include wife, Barbara; son, Don Wonka of Omaha; daughter and special friend, Diane Wonka and Ernie Hulinsky of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi and Gary Brockhoff of Lincoln; sisters, Florris Zimmerman of Scottsdale, AZ and Florrine VanWinkle of Aurora, CO; and sister-in-law, Lucille Wonka of Albuquerque, NM.

Other survivors are a grandson, Matthew Brockhoff of Lincoln; his furry companion, Shadow; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Willard Wonka and Frank Wonka, II; brother-in-law, Clyde Zimmerman and sister-in-law, Jean Wonka.

Jack graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1945. He served during the Korean War where he was a teletype operator at the General Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He was united in marriage to Barbara Martin on July 15, 1951.

He worked as assistant manager with his father at Chicago Lumber Company in Rosemont and Blue Hill until his father’s death in 1974. At that time Jack became manager. Jack and his father both won numerous ‘manager of the year’ awards. He transferred to Grand Island in 1978 and retired in 1992, after 50 years with the same company.

Jack is known for his love of his family and his love of animals. He was an avid golfer and bowler, receiving many trophies. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion and was a regular blood donor while living in Blue Hill.

Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island.

Harvey E. Zichek

Harvey E. Zichek, 83, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

There will be a gathering of family and friends an hour prior to service time at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Harvey was born icon June 25, 1925, in Lincoln, NE, the son of Ed and Agnes (Varga) Zichek.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 58 years, Deloris; son Ronald Zichek of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Matthes of Cairo and sister, Daisy Kuskie of Central City.

Also left to cherish his memory are a granddaughter and her husband, Michelle and Rick Lockard and a great granddaughter, Gabrielle Lockard.

Harvey is preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Gayle Diane Zichek; brother, Donald Zichek; brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Dorothy Zichek and a brother-in-law, Elsmer Kuskie.

Harvey was raised and attended school in Central City. He had to leave school at an early age to help on the farm, since his brothers went into the service. He was united in marriage to Deloris May on August 14, 1950. After their marriage, the couple lived in rural Palmer before settling in Grand Island in 1960. Harvey farmed and was a self-taught welder. He was employed by New Moon/Redman Mobile Homes and later by BonnaVilla Homes in Aurora. Eventually Harvey became co-owner of J-Boys Lounge and Package Store from which he retired in 1996.

A hard-working man, Harvey always had a project in the works; building five homes and three playhouses for his family over the years. His interests included reading westerns, gardening and watching the Guy Lombardo show, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Arthritis Foundation or donor’s choice.

Wendell W. Zwink

Wendell W. Zwink, 74, of Grand Island, died Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Golden Living Center Lakeview.

Burial of ashes will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. There will be no service. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wendell was born icon March 1, 1935, in Giltner, NE, the son of William and Viola (McNeff) Zwink.

Survivors include two sisters, Charlene Zwink and Cleetis Meyer, both of Grand Island, NE.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Wendell grew up around Hastings, graduating from Hastings High School. He was a member of the NE Army National Guard in Hastings. He entered the United States Air in 1958, serving in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1962. Over the years Wendell was real estate agent for various firms.

Ilene J. Pletcher

Ilene J. Pletcher, 81, of Grand Island, died Sunday, November 8, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the North Loup United Methodist Church. The Reverends Bruce Phillips and Mary Avidano will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at North Loup.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mrs. Pletcher was born icon February 21, 1928 at Lincoln, Nebraska the daughter of Clifford and Bertha (Mong) Bishop.

Survivors are her husband Gene; son, Randy Martin of Grand Island; daughters and sons-in-law, Lauren and Duke Stevens of Grand Island and Kim and Mark Koch of Norfolk, NE.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Rhett Martin, Jamie Hurley, Tracey Stevens, Sherri Kolar, Kalin Koch and Kirstie Koch and five great-grandchildren.

Ilene was adopted as an infant, was raised and received her education in Bartlet. She graduated from Wheeler County High School, class of 1944. She married Robert Martin in 1946. She then was united in marriage to Gene Pletcher on June 4, 1963. They made their home in North Loup until moving to Grand Island in 1989.

Ilene was employed at the Yancey Hotel as a telephone operator then worked for the Grand Island Independent and later as a dispatcher for the Ord Police Department. She played the piano at Bartlet Methodist Church and was a gifted singer that sang for many funerals and weddings in her earlier life. Ilene enjoyed photography and crocheting having crocheted many afghan’s for family and friends.

During Ilene’s last years her faithful cats, Mushie and Molly brought her laughter and companionship. Ilene had a great interest in all of God’s creatures and would be pleased to have memorials directed to Central Nebraska Humane Society.

Robert W. Fahnestock

Robert W. Fahnestock, 80, of Grand Island, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday, November 12, 2009.

Service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held Monday, November 16 at 2:00 PM at Calvary Lutheran Church at 13th and Custer. Reverend Sheri Lodel will officiate.

There will be no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mr. Fahnestock was born icon on February 6, 1929 in Milford, Nebraska. When he was three months old he was adopted by two very special and loving parents of Scribner, Nebraska where he grew up. His adoptive parents were William and Clara Fahnestock.

On February 10th 1950 he married Amy Schroeder also of Scribner. They were blessed with 59 wonderful years of marriage. They were blessed with a son, Robert Jr. and a daughter, Jill.

Bob graduated from Scribner High School in 1946 and then attended Wayne State College where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1950. He went to work for the Social Security Administration (SSA) when farmers became eligible for Social Security benefits. He worked for SSA for 30 years winning many awards for his fine work and dedication to his community and those he served. His career took him and his family from Omaha to Lincoln to Norfolk back to Omaha, Kansas City and then to Grand Island where he was the Assistant District Manager until his retirement, March 1 of 1985

When the family was permanently settled in GI, Bob and Amy began a dream of becoming foster parents. Robert Jr. was in Vietnam and Jill was 17 when they took Lucy. Thro the years they added Virginia, Mark, Jolene, Margie, Vickie, Jenna, Justine, Larae, John, George, Roberta and Monica. They have 15 foster grandchildren.

Bob had many interests in his life and retirement years. The greatest was his love of area High School sports. He also was the announcer for Legion Baseball games for 3 years. He served on the Crisis Center Board some years ago and was active in serving his church on the board, singing tenor in the choir and teaching Sunday school. When he was honored as an Extra Ordinary Person in the GI Independent he shared how important his love of Christ was to him. Before his heart problems he and Amy loved dancing, he was a wonderful waltzer but he really got into the polka and stomping his feet. Bob and Amy played an active part in the Spiral Marriage Encounter Group. They were very active on a state level with foster parenting.

On April of 2004 Bob and Amy were honored by their hometown of Scribner as their native son and daughter of the year for their work with children.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife Amy and son Rob and wife Virginia of Grand Island, daughter Jill and Grandson Benjamin of Grand Island and 13 foster children, his sister Lou Ann Henkens and husband Ken along with 7 nieces and nephews.

May God comfort us as we mourn the loss of Bob. Help us to rejoice with him in his arrival home to God’s kingdom.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials can be given to either Calvary Lutheran Church or Lutheran Family Services.

Lorena I. Legg

Lorena I. Legg, 83 of Wood River, died Thursday, June 02, 2011 at Good Samaritan in Wood River.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. Daniel Naranjo will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Legg was born icon July 12, 1927 at Holyoke, Colorado the daughter of Albert and Myrtle (Thomas) Lorimer.

Her husband Howard Legg preceded her in death on November 14, 2010.

Survivors are her children and their spouses, Gerald and Sandy Legg of Dannebrog, John and Judy Legg of Grand Junction, CO, Sandra and Bob Bolton of Aurora, NE and Melvin Legg of Doniphan.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Shannon, Jacki, Tom, Kristy, Mike, Nicci, and Matt, Kelly and Kim and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She was welcomed into heaven by her husband, daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn Legg; her parents; brothers, Morris, Forrest, Wilbur and Lawrence and sisters, Dorothy, Hazel, Violet and Marjorie.

Lorena was raised on the family farm in Yuma County, Colorado. She was united in marriage to Howard W. Legg on February 17, 1946. They lived in Wauneta, NE for many years before moving to Grand Island in 1967. They then moved to Osceola in1985 later returning to Grand Island.

Some of her enjoyments include her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, gardening, canning, raising rat terriers, playing cards and slot machines. She was a hard worker her whole life and reluctantly fully retired at the age of 78 due to poor health that she endured for many years.

Memorials are suggested to ‘GRACE’, Grand Island Area Cancer Endowment or the Central Nebraska Humane Society.
