Merlin D. Halm

Merlin D. Halm, 78, of Grand Island, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center with his family at his side.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21 in All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Gary Schulte will officiate. Military honors will be provided by United States Air Force. Burial of ashes will be in Grand Island City Cemetery at a later date.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Darlene; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Deb Halm of Grand Island; daughters and son-in-law, Debra and Kyle Holloway of Ord and Brenda Lee Halm of Grand Island; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Judy Halm of Central City and Gary and Arlene Halm of Phillips; and sisters and brother-in-law, Berniece Hiner of Grand Island and Joyce and Jack Tuma of Lincoln.

He is also survived by six grandchildren and their spouses, Brandon and Carlene Halm, Corey and Aiko Halm, Megan and Oscar Corona, Heather and Garland Krabbenhoft, Brian Oistad and Miles Enyeart and his fiancé, Amanda Jo; ten great grandchildren, Victoria, Xavier, Maxximus, Nicholas, Alex, Ethan, Sydney, Dayten, Cameron and Chloe and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorthy Hiner and a brother, Kenneth Halm.

Merlin grew up and attended school in Scotia. He was united in marriage to Darlene Faye Janicek on February 28, 1953 at Clay Center.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force on March 17, 1953. Merlin’s military career began in basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas. He was stationed at Amarillo, TX, Salinas, KS, Lincoln, had an overseas tour from 1965 to 1967, in the Philippines, and returned to Rapid City, SD. After twenty years in the U.S. Air Force, Merlin retired Master Sergeant on June 30, 1973. After his discharge, Merlin was employed for the US Postal Service in Lincoln. The family relocated to Grand Island in 1974 and Merlin was manager of Colonial Square Apartments for twenty years.

Merlin was a member of the Grand Island VFW and the Air Force Sergeant Association.

An avid gardener, Merlin was meticulous with his yardwork. His enjoyments also included fishing and Husker football. A wonderful and caring family man, Merlin greatly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to GRACE Foundation (Grand Island Area Cancer Endowment).

Nora Hansen

Nora Hansen, 92 of Grand Island died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at home with her family by her side.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate. Burial will be in the Kelso Cemetery near Farwell at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hansen was born icon June 2, 1919 at Rockville, NE the daughter of Soren and Emma Sorensen.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Hansen on August 23, 2002.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Koann Hansen of Grand Island, Danielle and Loren Bangs of Doniphan, Harry and Darla Hansen of Grand Island and Dr. Larry and Carol Hansen of Grand Island.

Those also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Krisha Goering, Heather Hansen Stites, Angela Bangs Schneider, Brian Bangs, Bradley Bangs and wife Jennifer, Audra Hansen, Gabriel Hansen and fiancé Kristin Brady and Tess Hansen; great-grandchildren, Matt Goering, Thaddeus Schneider, Hildi Schneider, Johnathan Bangs, Jacob Bangs, Allison Bangs and Olivia Bangs.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son and two brothers, Willie “Bill” Sorensen and Arthur Sorensen and sister, Rose Jakob.

Nora was raised on a farm near Rockville. She received her education at Souleville Elementary and graduated from Rockville High School, class of 1936.

On January 27, 1943 she was united in marriage to Raymond C. Hansen at Rockville. The couple farmed northeast of Rockville until 1953 when they moved to Grand Island.

She is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was very active in her church. Nora’s passion was her family. She enjoyed attending all her grandkid’s activities.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church, St. Francis Hospice or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Margaret M. Hardekopf

Margaret M. Hardekopf, 88 of Grand Island died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center with her family by her side.

Private family services will be held at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate. To honor Mrs. Hardekopf’s wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Cedarview Cemetery near Doniphan.

Mrs. Hardekopf was born icon February 18, 1923 in Hall County the daughter of LeRoy and Leona (Cox) Gregg.

Survivors are her children and their spouses, Peg and Jim Stulken of Doniphan, Patricia and Dan Rainforth of Doniphan and Stan and Jana Pokorney of Charlotte, North Carolina and sister, Arlene Nelson of Grand Island.

Those also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Victoria Larson, Kevin Rainforth, Brent Rainforth, Jill Osler, Troy Rainforth, and Scott Pokorney, Megan Brancato and Ben Pokorney and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her son, Steve Pokorney; grandson, Brad Stulken; sister, Meredith White and husbands, Joe Pokorney, Bill Wicht and Bill Hardekopf preceded her in death.

Margaret was raised in Hall County and graduated from Trumbull High School. She attended Kearney State College.

Margaret lived in Doniphan for 40 years moving to Grand Island in 1968. Taking care of her home and family was her passion. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, decorating, dancing and music. In addition to being a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife and friend she worked as a secretary-bookkeeper for many years. She spent the past year at Bickford Cottage.

A memorial fund will be established in Margaret’s memory.

Frank J. Hermes

Frank J. Hermes, 78 of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Wedgewood Care Center with his family by his side.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Reverend Chuck Peek will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Hermes was born icon March 25, 1934 at Davenport, IA the son of Walter and Mable (Tobin) Hermes.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joan; children and their spouses, Frank (Ed) Hermes of Illinois, Melissa and Jerry Schwieger of Grand Island, Julie and Chris Beckman of North Platte and Laurie and Marty Beason of Grand Island and sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Jane Lee of Grand Island and Ann and Steve Rosenblatt of Phoenix, AZ.

Those also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Eric Thompson, Tessa Thompson, Libby Beck, Alexis Beckman, Annie Beckman, Alleigh Beckman, Seth Davis, and Aaron Davis, Chad Davis, Kayla Hansen and Tyler Slauter and 16 great-grandchildren.

Frank was welcomed into heaven by daughter, Francie Slauter; great-grandson, Van Hansen and his parents.

Frank graduated from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1952. He was united in marriage to Joan Zook on January 16, 1954 at Grand Island. Frank worked in the family owned business at Hight’s Drive Inn; later Big John’s Restaurant and retired as a paint contractor.

Together they traveled coast to coast as he built furniture and country decor. Together they owned and operated Nana’s Country Store.

Frank was an avid Husker football fan and Oakland Raider fan. He enjoyed horse racing and woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren; great-grandchildren and his four legged friend, Sammy.

A memorial fund will be established in memory of Frank.

Bruce A. Herndon

Bruce A. Herndon, 58 of Grand Island died Friday August 10, 2012 at the Grand Island Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Mr. Herndon was born icon August 4, 1954 at Kansas City, Missouri the son of Robert and Dorma (James) Herndon.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Liberty Baptist Cemetery at Springfield, Missouri. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, TSgt Tabitha and Eric Grahn of Roy, Utah, Amanda Herndon of Lincoln, SrA Jessica and Jason Wieczorek of Belleview, NE and Zachary Herndon of Lincoln; brothers and sister-in-law, Frank Herndon of Wisconsin, Jack and Nicki Herndon of Wisconsin and John Herndon of Georgia and sisters, Eddie Herndon of Texas, Carol Davison and Cindy May both of Georgia.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Abigail, Kyler, Hunter, Danika and Payton. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Herndon and sisters, Linda Wicker and Vernie Zimmerman.

Bruce served in the United States Air Force. He received his degree in drafting and later a Paralegal Degree from Johnson County Community College in Kansas City. He was united in marriage to Kay Nouzovsky in 1980.

Bruce worked as a Paralegal for many years in the Kansas City area. He enjoyed fishing.

A memorial fund will be established in his name.

Margaret Ella (Schmidt) Hessel

Margaret Ella (Schmidt) Hessel, 91, of Grand Island died Thursday, August 30, 2012, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

A celebration of her life is planned for the near future.

Margaret was born icon April 7, 1921 to Herman D. and Reminnie D. (Michaelsen) Schmidt in Richmond, Nebraska where her family lived on a farm near Archer outside of Palmer.

Survivors in the immediate family include her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Richard Maschmeyer of Santa Fe, New Mexico and son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Hessel of Grand Island.

Margaret has six grandchildren, Ingrid Maschmeyer and Adam Maschmeyer of Anchorage, Alaska and Erika Davis of Lakewood, Colorado, Dustin Hessel of Lakewood, Colorado, Hilary Warner of West Des Moines, Iowa and Lindsey Hessel of Denver, Colorado. She was blessed with two beautiful great grandchildren, Caitlyn and her brother Leyton, both of Lakewood, Colorado. Her surviving nieces and nephew are Rosella Daughtery of Hastings, Joyce Ryan of Grand Island, and Susan Smith and Arnold “Skipper” Schmidt both of St. Joseph, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hessel in 1997 and her parents. She lost her two brothers, Robert L. Schmidt in World War II, and Arnold H. Schmidt in 1948. Her only sister, Rose Ann Jacobsen, passed in 2007.

Margaret graduated from Palmer High School in 1939. She was a great speller and won many awards while in school. During the World War II, she was one of many women who filled in for the men by working at a gas station. Later she worked at the Ordinance plant where she met her husband to be, Raymond Hessel. They were married on October 10, 1940 and made their permanent home in Grand Island. Each summer they made trips to Sacramento and San Leandro, California to visit family who had moved from Nebraska.

While working various job, Margaret continued her love of handicrafts that ranged from crocheting, knitting and sewing (making most of her daughter’s formal wear) to making Rickrack earrings and Christmas ornaments crafted from wallpaper sample books. When asked to make her daughter’s wedding dress, she declined, gladly paying for a “store bought” dress.

Her most amazing artistic feat was crocheting a six-foot by four-foot picture of the “Last Supper” following a pattern and completing it as one piece. Her father and brother-in-law framed the masterpiece and hung it for her. When asked how long the project took, she “guestimated” at least ten years, possibly because she was a perfectionist, tearing out row after row if she found a previous mistake.

John L. Hoffa

John L. Hoffa, 37 of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 19, 2012 in Howard County.

There will be a private family celebration of life service at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Reverend Michael McDermott will officiate.

Mr. Hoffa was born icon September 18, 1974 at Grand Island the son of Gary and Kathy (Nguyen) Hoffa.

Survivors include his parents of Grand Island; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and David Johnson of Chicago, Ill; grandfather, Robert Hoffa of Grand Island; his Florida mother, Carolyne Wine Gardener; a niece, Madalynn Johnson and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother and maternal grandparents.

John was raised in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Northwest High School, class of 1992. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity. John lived in Chicago and Florida. He enjoyed camping and computer games. For many years he worked as a graphic designer.

Memorials are suggested to Resurrection Catholic Church.
