HOWARD N. HALKER
Elwood

Services for Howard N. Halker, 84, of Elwood were Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Elwood, with Rev. Bonnie Linton-Hendrick officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Elwood Cemetery at Elwood.
Howard died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Gosper County to Alvin and Inez (Lux) Halker. He grew up on a farm with his brothers, Delmar and Carl, and sister, Phyllis. He was baptized at the Christian church in Elwood.
Howard attended school at Gosper County District 16 and District 30 at Elwood. In 2002, Howard was awarded his high school diploma in a ceremony held at the Elwood High School. The diploma was awarded to veterans who fought for their country during World War II.
In 1941, Howard was drafted into the Army where he proudly served his country. Upon leaving the Army, Howard then returned to Elwood where he spent most of his life.
On Aug, 27, 1948, he married Ardus (Haney) Gruber at Sterling, Colo. Ardus was widowed with five children, Mary Ellen, Larry, Don, Estelline and Lynette, and they all moved to the home place three miles east of Elwood.
Howard and Ardus were blessed with three children of their own, Inez Joy, Nelson and Greg.
In October 1984, Howard and Ardus retired from farming and moved to Elwood. They enjoyed the Senior Center, where Howard loved playing pool and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed checking the cows and windmill, riding his bike, taking drives with Ardus, watching ESPN and CNN and discussing politics.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Elwood, the American Legion in Elwood, as well as a volunteer for the American Red Cross bloodmobile.
Survivors include his wife Ardus Halker, Elwood; four sons, Larry (Elinor) Gruber of Joplin, Mo., Donald (Mary) Gruber and Nelson (Lannae) Halker, all of Smithfield, and Greg (Sondra) Halker, Bertrand; four daughters, Mary Ellen Ford, Hildreth, Estelline (Gene) Townsend, Caldwell, Kan., Lynnette (Jim) Phillips, Lexington, and Inez (Darrel) Bourne, Medford, Ore.; two brothers, Delmar Halker, Yakima, Wash., and Carl (Marilyn) Halker, Edina, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Phyllis Adler.
Memorials are suggested to the Elwood Senior Center or the United Methodist Church.

LOUIS L. WACKERLA
Lexington

Services for Louis L. Wackerla, 78, Lexington, will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington, with Fr. Don Buhrman officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. Visitation will be today, Feb. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. with Rosary to follow at 7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
Louis died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
He was born July 4, 1924, on a farm near Doniphan to Emmett and Frances (Grayek) Wackerla. He attended school at Doniphan.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre.
On Nov. 24, 1954, he married Dorothy Landreth in Oconto. Three children were born to this union, Kathleen, Richard and Robert.
Louis was a very talented man, an accomplished farmer, carpenter, welder and mechanic. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oconto, as well as a life-time member of the American Legion and VFW. He was also a member of the Eagles Club in Kearney.
He led a full life in the Oconto, Lexington and Johnson Lake areas. He loved to fish and travel.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Wackerla, Johnson Lake, and Robert (Diann) Wackerla, Axtell; one daughter, Kathleen (Stephen) Orcutt, Kearney; one brother, Frank Wackerla, Lexington; special friends, Bob Hurst, Arapahoe, and Mike Wigstone, Lexington; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, George, Tom and William, one nephew and a boy his parents raised, Bill Dembowski.
Memorials are suggested to the American Legion.

THEODORE D. "TED" MENKE
Cozad

Memorial services for Theodore D. "Ted" Menke, 94, Cozad, will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church, east of Cozad.
He died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge of arrangements.

CONNIE CHILDRESS
Overton

Services for Connie Lee Childress, 53, Overton, will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington, with Pastor Dean Pofahl officiating. Burial will be in the Overton Cemetery at Overton. There will be no visitation.
Connie died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

LEONA MAY MOSHER
Lexington

Funeral services for Leona May (Switzer) Mosher, 94, of Lexington will be at 3 p.m. today, March 26, 2003 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St. in Lincoln, with visitation prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
She died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.
Leona was born May 18, 1908, at Nehawka to Delbert and Estella (Buchanan) Switzer.
Leona had moved to Lexington several years ago to be near her daughter, Sally Schneider.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert (Norma) Mosher of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Kenneth (Donna) Mosher of Lincoln; one daughter, Sally (Jim) Schneider of Johnson Lake; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd, two brothers and two sisters.
Memorials should be made in care of the family in lieu of flowers.

ARCHIE KROEKER
Lexington

Archie E. Kroeker, 84, of Lexington, Nebraska died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Park Avenue Estates in Lexington. The family has chosen cremation. There will be no services.
He was born June 6, 1918, on a farm east of Henderson to Jacob and Sarah (Epp) Kroeker. In 1928, he moved with his parents to Perkins County, near Madrid, where he graduated from high school in 1938. He attended the First Mennonite Church in Madrid and was baptized upon confession of faith June 1, 1941, in the First Mennonite Church in Madrid.
In 1940, he married Sarah Friesen in Bellville, Kan. They lived in Perkins County until 1945 when they moved to a farm near Henderson. To this union four children were born, Roger, Dennis, Allen and Dale.
In 1960, employment took the family to Fairmont, where he joined the First Methodist Church. In 1975, employment took them to Lexington, where he became a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Roger (Lois) Kroeker of Las Vegas, Nev., Dennis (Lorraine) Kroeker of Pontiac, Mo., and Dale Kroeker; three grandchildren, Kristi (Carl) Nybro, Calvin (Molly) Kroeker and Keith Kroeker; great-grandchildren, Blake and Alek Nybro and Sam and Sophie Kroeker; a brother, Norman (Verna) Kroeker, Henderson; brother-in-law, Albert (Viola) Friesen, Redding, Calif.; sister-in-law, Anna Babbitt, Orangevale, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sarah, Nov. 26, 2002, 2½-year-old son, Allen, and an infant brother.
Memorials are suggested to the Park Avenue Estates Employees Christmas Fund.

DOROTHY WEISMANN
Elwood

Services for Dorothy May (Davis) Weismann, 80, Elwood, were Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood, with the Rev. Kenton Birtell officiating. Burial was in the Robb Cemetery at Smithfield.
Dorothy died Friday, March 21, 2003, at her home in Elwood.
She was born May 7, 1922, to Homer and Ida "Faye" (Alkire) Davis of Smithfield. She attended rural school north of Smithfield near Powerhouse #2. In the mid 1940s, she worked at the Lexington Hospital as a nurse aide.
On Jan. 25, 1947, she married Walter Weismann at Norton, Kan. They raised three children, Dianne, Karen and Dan. They started married life on a farm northwest of Elwood. They spent most of their married life south and east of Eustis, farming and raising cattle and hogs.
In 1983, they retired from farming and moved to Elwood. Dorothy worked as a nurse aide for 13 years at the Elwood Care Center. In 1996, she had open-heart surgery in Omaha and at that time retired from work. In December of 2001, she was diagnosed with cancer.
Dorothy served one term as president and one term as director of Phelps and Gosper County Porkettes, and state director of the Nebraska Pork Producers. She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Elwood.
Survivors include her husband, Walter, Elwood; daughters, Dianne (Dean) Keller, Eustis, and Karen Schutz, Elwood; a son, Dan (Bonnie) Weismann, Smithfield; sisters, Ilean Falkinburg and Georgia (William) Ashmore, all of Lexington; brothers, Everett (Loretta) Davis, Lexington, Homer Jr. (Mary Ann) Davis, Elm Creek, and Howard (Erlene) Davis, Arapahoe; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Tucker) Thompson, Eustis, Brenda (Jim) Collura, Marietta, Ga., Shane Schutz and Davy Schutz, both of Elwood, Dustin (Mary) Schutz, Kimball, Ian and Aaron Weismann, Smithfield; three step-granddaughters, Jenny Chrisp, Auburn, and Liz and Paige Chrisp, Smithfield; four great-grandchildren, Collin and Colton Thompson, Tayla Schutz and James Arthur Collura III; plus close relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mary Adams, and a daughter-in-law, Marcy Weismann.
A memorial has been established in her memory.

LINNAEUS "LINN" FLOCK
Cozad

Services for Linnaeus "Linn" Flock, 87,Cozad, were Monday, July 28, 2003, at the Maywood Christian Church, with Dale Heimer officiating. Burial was in the Maywood Cemetery.
Linn died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad.
He was born June 2, 1916, south of Maywood to Willie and Elizabeth (Spence) Flock. He grew up on the family farmstead and attended rural school south of Maywood, finishing his education at the Ag school in Curtis.
On March 4, 1940, he married Maude Davis at Ogallala. They lived in Omaha and Buffalo, N.Y., before returning to Maywood where he worked at the McCook Air Base on the flight line. In the late 1940s, he began farming and in 1998, retired and moved to Cozad.
He attended the Christian Church and had a strong faith that carried him through the good and bad times, bringing him comfort. He is remembered for reciting poetry, bringing love to his family, singing and yodeling. He also had a love for traveling and the outdoors. He always enjoyed a good story or joke and had one ready to tell. He was a strong believer in the Lord and his ways.
Survivors include four daughters, Jean Ann (David) Boland, Kaslo, B.C., Linda (Ron) Deprez, and Patricia Durner, all of Cozad, and Debra (Jim) Phillips, Littleton, Colo.; two sons, Russell (Elizabeth) Flock, Maywood, and Ronald Flock, North Platte; a sister, Zelma Dodson, Curtis; a sister-in-law, Irene Flock, Pearland, Texas; seven grandsons; a great-granddaughter and three great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude, in 2001, an infant son, Gary, and a brother, Marlin.
A memorial has been established in his memory.

CHARLES "CHARLIE" LOWER
Wheatland, Wyo.

Funeral services will be conducted for Charles Edward "Charlie" Lower, 64, at 2 p.m., today, Dec. 3, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Wheatland, Wyo., with Rev. Les Ludlam officiating. Interment will be in the Wheatland Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to noon, at Gorman Funeral Homes-Platte Chapel in Wheatland.
Charles died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland, of a heart attack.
He was born June 1, 1939, at the family home in Todd County, S.D., the son of Roy and Luella (Grooms) Lower. He attended country school north of Valentine, and graduated from Valentine High School. He attended a Body and Fender Trade School in Kansas City, Kan. He served in the United States Army for two years and of that time, 13 months were in Korea.
On June 4, 1961, he married Virginia Thornton in Valentine. This marriage was blessed with the birth of three children, Larry, Vickie, and Cassy.
The family lived in Lexington for 13 years and Charlie worked and began his hobby of racing stock cars.
He moved with his family to Wheatland, Wyo. in November 1979 and began working at the Laramie River Power Station and was still employed at the time of his death.
He enjoyed hunting with his children, riding his Harley with his son, and playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia Lower, Wheatland, Wyo.; two sons, Larry (Annette) Lower, Gillette, Wyo., and Cassy (Tiffany) Lower, Wheatland; one daughter, Vickie (Mark) Rizzi, Casper, Wyo.; father, Roy Lower, Valentine; four brothers, Ted Lower, Aberdeen, Wash., Robert Lower, Valentine, Jerry Lower, Riverton, Wyo., and Don Lower, of Washington; five grandchildren, Garrett and Amanda Lower, Gillette, and Aure, Corey, and Sydney Rizzi all of Casper; mother-in-law, Ruth Thornton, Wheatland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, an infant sister, a nephew, and his grandparents.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, the American Lung Association, or the donor's choice.
