Jose G. Magana, 91, of Grand Island, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012 at Schuyler, NE. Services will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, June, 13 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. A Rosary will be 7:00 pm, Tuesday, June 12 at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Ione A. Martens

Ione A. Martens, 84, of Grand Island died on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society-Grand Island Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Bethany Cemetery near Carroll, NE.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Ion Martens was born icon on March 30, 1927 in Wayne County, NE to Gwilym and Ruth (Gray) Jones. She attended school in Lead, S.D., and graduated from Carroll High School in Nebraska. She attended Doane College and graduated in 1948.

She married Irvin Martens in 1949. They lived in Clarks, Nelson, Lincoln, Omaha, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Schuyler. They had two daughters. Their marriage was dissolved in 1973.

She taught High School English in Wahoo, Schuyler, Central City, and at Grand Island Senior High where she retired in 1989. After she retired, she was active in YWCA, United Way, AARP, First Presbyterian Church, Eagles Auxiliary, and Retired Teachers. She conducted a reading group for members of the YWCA and residents of Riverside Lodge. She also wrote a short novel titled “The Savor of the Salt” in 1994. Her favorite activity was dancing. She also enjoyed golf and table tennis.

Ione is survived by her two daughters, Sue Heffner of North Platte and Sally Anderson and her husband, Greg Anderson of Grand Island.

Other survivors are her grandchildren, Clint Heffner of Omaha, Ryan Heffner of Kearney, Noah Anderson and wife, Lisa of Omaha, and Scott Anderson of Omaha; her great grandchildren, Kelsey Heffner, Abby Heffner, and Bethany Anderson; and her brother, Lynn Jones and wife, Sharon of Denver, CO.

Ione was welcomed into heaven by her parents, Gwilym and Ruth Jones; brother Alverne Jones and wife, Edyth; her special friend, Bill Gulzow and three infant great grandsons, Jacob, Nolan and Cody Heffner.

Memorials are suggested to GISH Academic Aristocrat fund for Scholarships.

Lila Rose (Canaday) Masden

Lila Rose (Canaday) Masden was born icon June 28, 1916 in Chadron, Nebraska to Emma Eliza (Wood) Canaday and Prier Raymond Canaday. She died in the Grand Island Veteran’s Home on January 21 st, 2012 at the age of 95.

Services will be 10:30 am, February 2, at the All Faiths Chapel of the Nebraska Veterans Home. Burial will follow in Nebraska Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Lila attended elementary school in Page, Nebraska and her high school years at Faith Home Bible School in Mitchell, South Dakota where she cared for the orphan boys and girls. She also met her future husband Kenneth Elbert Masden there.

On June 28, 1941 Kenneth and Lila were married at the Wesleyan church in Page, Nebraska. Shortly thereafter (February, 1942) Kenneth served in World War II leaving Lila alone. During that time (1943) Lila gave birth to her daughter Philisha (Pam) Ehrismann and they stayed in a small shack near Kenneth’s folks on the Missouri river bottom about 20 miles from Wagner, South Dakota. Lila said that this was one of the happiest times in her life.

In 1945 Kenneth returned from the military and he and Lila purchase a home in Avon, South Dakota. Their son, Kenneth Ellard Masden was born icon there in 1946. In 1948 Kenneth and his father exchanged homes and the family moved back to the river bottom near Wagner.

After being flooded out several years, they moved to a farm near Worthington, Minnesota and shortly thereafter moved on to Ocheyedan, Iowa where the children grew up and graduated from high school. During these years in addition to taking care of her children, she took care of Aunt Anna, Uncle Glenn Little, Thelma (Summers) Philippi and Lila’s mother Emma (Wood) Canaday.

In 1962, Kenneth found employment in Lincoln, Nebraska and Lila remained in Ocheyedan to allow Ellard to complete high school. In 1964 Lila joined Kenneth in Lincoln, Nebraska where they resided for 35 years. Here again, Lila cared for her mom Emma as well as Kenneth’s mom Alice Masden.

Upon retirement in 1998 Kenneth and Lila moved to Grand Island, Nebraska to be near their daughter Pam and Pam’s family.When their health started to fail, in November of 2003 they moved into the Grand Island Veteran’s home where they both received wonderful care during the last years of their lives.

Lila was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and her husband Kenneth Elbert Masden. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Philishia (Pam) and Don Ehrismann of Grand Island, NE, her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth (Ellard) and Martha (Marty) Masden of Carnation, Washington, her granddaughter Sheila Marie Ehrismann and Sheila’s husband Leslie Morris as well as their children (Lila’s great grandchildren) Jason Lucas, Andrew Morris, Ali Morris and Ariel Morris of Grand Island, Nebraska.

Maurice F. McNerney

Maurice F. McNerney, 89, of Grand Island, formerly of Giltner, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Giltner. There will be a Rosary at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Father Dennis Hunt will officiate. Burial will be in Giltner Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mr. McNerney was born icon April 18, 1922 in Atchinson, Kansas, the son of William and Nellie (Madden) McNerney.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Kathy (Dusty) Kohl of Hastings, Robert McNerney of Giltner and Liz Cornwell of Grand Island; and a sister, Helen Manion of Grand Island.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Casey Cornwell, Laura McNerney and Karly McNerney; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews and a special four-legged friend, Lucky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty McNerney, on April 9, 2005; brother, Donald McNerney; daughter-in-law, Jo McNerney; two nephews and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Maurice grew up and received his education in Oshkosh, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Betty Joan Gimpel on July 2, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Giltner. Following their marriage, the couple made their home on the family farm in rural Giltner. Maurice farmed his entire life, operating a mechanic shop ‘McNerney Repair’ on the farm. Over the years, he was employed by Ranard Well Drilling and Harv’s Custom Combining of Giltner.

At the urging of his wife, he retired in his 70’s. Maurice was a resident of East Park Villa in Aurora for two years, before moving to Tiffany Square in Grand Island in 2010.

He was a member and volunteer at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed his annual vegetable garden, and fishing in his spare time. He was a regular at the auctions and was a ‘hoarder’ before it was a word. Morris and Betty spent many enjoyable summers traveling with friends. Most of all, Maurice enjoyed his grandchildren and spending time with them.

Memorials are suggested to Giltner Volunteer Fire Department and Central NE Humane Society.

Kenneth Earl 'Ken' Meints

Kenneth Earl ‘Ken’ Meints, 79, of Grand Island died Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Wedgewood Care Center.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, at Peace Lutheran Church. Reverend Michael Reiners will officiate.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mr. Meints was born icon September 13, 1932, at Palisade, Nebraska, the son of Albert Jensen and Minnie (Baker) Meints.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Darla; four children and their spouses, Melanie and Dwight Livingston of Grand Island, Kandi and Ashton Lee Smith of Grand Island, Kristine and Robert Michalski of Columbus, and Kurt and Kaye Meints of Shelton; and brother, Paul Meints of McCook.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Edward (Crystal) Livingston, Adam Meints (Audrea Aquilar), Keith (Cody) Meints, Kylee (Nick) Rhamy, Heather Meints, Ashley Smith (Jason Manning), Kelsie Meints, Wayne Smith and Bobby Michalski; four great grandchildren, Allen, Jacob, Kaitlyn and Connor; brother-in-law, Larry (Shirley) Baucom; many, many friends and his beloved ‘lapdog’ Gus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Nathan; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and George Scott; brother-in-law, Garry Baucom; and sister-in-law, Wilma ‘Willie’ Meints.

Ken grew up in Palisade. At the age of eight he was stricken with polio. He coped with the effects of the disease the rest of his life. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and confirmed in 1947. He attended school in Palisade, graduating in 1947. He then continued his education in Lincoln to be certified as an X-ray/lab technician.

Ken was employed at Hand Community Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa, where he met his future wife. Ken and Darla Jean Baucom were united in marriage on December 23, 1956, in Shenandoah. The couple lived in Randolph, IA, Pender, Creighton, Plainview and Ord as Ken worked for various hospitals or doctor offices.

In 1967, Ken moved his family to a farm north of Shelton. Ken worked at the Ordinance Plant, Ravenna Cheese Factory and was employed as custodian for Shelton School and Central Catholic High School. In later years, he was a door greeter at WalMart, until his retirement in 2006.

Ken enjoyed reading Louis L’amour westerns, collecting Norman Rockwell items, Nebraska football and tinkering on cars. He taught each of his children how to change tires. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially with his grandchildren and attending their activities.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.

Tackla Alice Michalski

Tackla Alice Michalski, 95, of Grand Island, went to be with her Lord Friday, June 8, 2012 at Tiffany Square.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 12 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Reverend Richard Piontkowski will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. at the All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel.

Tackla was born icon December 10, 1916, at Rockville, Nebraska, to Mike and Agnes (Kowalski) Slobaszewski, the youngest of 16 children.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sharon Michalski of Grand Island and daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gene Hansen of Lincoln; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years Leo F. Michalski in June of 1992; her daughter, Janet Sullivan; six brothers and six sisters.

Tackla grew up and received her education in Sherman County. She was united in marriage to Leo F. Michalski on October 28, 1935, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral. Her hobbies included embroidery, appliqué and playing cards. Tackla enjoyed tending to her garden and flowers, but especially enjoyed her family. They fondly remember her cooking, including her ‘cinnamon rolls’ and ‘chicken and dumplings’.

Memorials are suggested to the family or to the donor’s choice.

Evelyn R. Miller

Evelyn R. Miller, 89 of Grand Island, died Thursday, May 29, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Services will be Saturday, June 2 at 3 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Bob Rhodes will officiate. Cremation has been chosen as per her wishes.

Evelyn was born icon June 17, 1922 at Curtis, NE to Charles D. and Jesse J. (Miller) Linnemeyer.

Survivors are her husband of 53 years, Jack; her children and their spouses, Randy K. and Connie Nicholson of Las Vegas, NV, Jack L. and Lynne Miller of Placerville, CA, and Christine Marie Camp of Placerville, CA; a sister, Marjorie Nelsen and her husband Harv of Apache Junction, AZ; 4 grand children and 5 great grand children; numerous nieces and nephews; a God Daughter, Joanna and good friends, Tom and Myra Oshlo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Tim Nicholson, two sisters, Eleanor and Naomi and a son in law Bernard Camp.

Evelyn was raised and received her education at Curtis. She was united in marriage to Tim Nicholson in 1939. Tim passed on December 25, 1953. Following the death of her first husband, she continued to operate their grocery store in Palisade. She later married Jack L. Miller on October 26, 1958. She worked at KODY radio in North Platte and Brown Fruit Company for many years and then for KMMJ radio for 14 years.

She enjoyed muzzle loading, camping and fishing with her husband Jack. She was also an avid Lapidary worker and enjoyed silver work and making ceramics. Evelyn will always be remembered for her great turkey plucking abilities.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Elenora Barbara Ackerman Miller

Elenora Barbara Ackerman Miller, 95, of Grand Island, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the Wedgewood Care Center.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 23 at the United Congregational Church. The Reverend Rex Logan will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel.

Elenora was born icon August 26, 1916, at Sutton, NE, the daughter of Edgar and Rachel (Peter) Griess. She grew up in the Sutton area, and attended county grade schools until the 8th grade. Elenora couldn’t speak English when she started school, so the school sent her home and she was told she had to learn English before returning.

She married Karl Ackerman on August 30, 1936 at Sutton, Nebraska and was married for 51 years. To this marriage 5 children were born; Coleen Ackerman, Allan Ackerman, Arlen Dean Ackerman, Karen Ackerman Gruener, and Janelle Ackerman Stelk. Karl passed away in 1987. Elenora then married Roy Miller in 1992, and Roy passed away in 2009.

She and Karl worked in the sugar beet and potato fields in Gering, NE until returning to the Phillips area where they farmed for many years. Elenora worked in Sutton at a creamery, a diner in Fairmont, and at Wolbach’s and Kaufman’s in Grand Island. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and made beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed having the family over for a German/Russian dinner of Borscht, Blachinda and Kutchen. She relished her family and was always there with a helping hand. Elenora and her husband’s spent many winters in Texas where Elenora loved to fish. Also, she was an avid dancer and belonged to the Platte Duetsche, the Eagles, and the Liederkranz. She was an active member of the Extension Club of Hamilton County and also many card clubs. She was also a member of United Congregational Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children and their spouses, Allan and Joann Ackerman of Tampa, FL, Arlen Dean and Darlene Ackerman of Hastings, NE, Karen and Duane Gruener of Phillips, NE and Janelle and Dennis Stelk of Phillips; step children and their spouses, Janet and David Gilleylen of Arvada, CO and Larry and Karen Miller of Grand Island, NE; brothers and their wives, Ivan and Florence Griess of Lodi, CA and Louis and Regina Griess of Apto’s, California; sisters, Verna Schmer of Sutton, NE and Ruth Reichert of Gering, NE; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 11 step great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Karl Ackerman and Roy Miller; a daughter Coleen; a granddaughter, Lindsey; sister LeNea Winters; 4 brothers, Will, Marlin, Keith, and Curt Griess.
