Arlene R. Rivera

Arlene R. Rivera, 61 of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Wedgewood Care Center.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Reverend Richard L. Piontkowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday with a parish Rosary at 7 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Ms. Rivera was born icon October 3, 1950 at Kearney, NE the daughter of Frank, Sr. and Mary (Aldana) Rivera.

Survivors include her children, Jesse Rivera of Omaha, Linda Rivera of Omaha, Ray McBride of Grand Island, Lisa Rivera of Florida, Rose Rivera of Grand Island, Jason Rivera of Florida and Crystal Lewis of Grand Island; brothers and sisters, Frank Rivera, Jr., Richard Rivera, Jesse Rivera, Mary Mason, Kathy Laws and Rachel Rivera all of Grand Island.

Other survivors are numerous grandchildren and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Joe Rivera and sister, Anita Rivera.

Arlene was raised in Kearney and Grand Island, graduating from Central Catholic High School. She was a Foster Mother for over 20 years. She also served as a security guard at the power plant near Nebraska City.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Donna June Roeber

Donna June Roeber, 77, of Grand Island, passed away Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Wood River Good Samaritan Society, with her family at her side.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June, 22nd at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Glen Keylon will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children and their spouses; LaRae and Randy Anderson of Norfolk, Harlan Roeber of Grand Island, Patty and Dean Homolka of Grand Island, Perry Roeber of Grand Island and Candice Thies of Clarks; a sister, Frances Nickelson of Atlantic, IA.

She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Tommy in 1995; her parents; one brother; and three sisters.

Donna was born icon January 18, 1935, in Lincoln to, Robert and Sylvia (Grimm) Erdelt. She grew up in Ashland, NE where she received her education.

She was united in marriage Tommy Barron Roeber on February 26, 1956. Following their marriage they lived in Corpus Christi, TX, and Norfolk, NE for many years. The couple made Grand Island their home in 1971. Donna was a homemaker for many years before she was employed by the Hub Lounge for a long period of time.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was an avid bowler, loved gardening and also enjoyed camping.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Neal Sahling

Neal Sahling 52 of Prosser, Nebraska died Monday, April 24th as a result of a car accident in Hastings.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church at rural Juniata, NE. The Reverend Greg Volzke will officiate. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 South Locust Street, Grand Island.

He was born icon July 1, 1959 in Hastings, NE to Donna and LaMonte Sahling. He grew up on the family farm south of Wood River. Farming was his first love and he was never afraid of hard work or long hours. He graduated from Wood River High in 1977 and went on to Central Community College in Hastings and became a licensed electrician. He was in the seed corn industry for over 25 years. For the last 12 years he was a district sales manager for Channel Bio.

Neal enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles his entire life. He enjoyed many great trips with family and friends. One of his favorites was “The Ride Around Nebraska” with Bill Lawry, Sr.

Neal lived his life clean and sober for the last 23 years. He had many friends and supporters in the program.

He was a 10 year veteran of the Wood River Volunteer Fire Department. He valued his contribution to the community and always strived to give more. He was the Safety Officer, an EMT, CPR instructor and graduated from the National Safety Officer Program. He completed his Firefighter 1 certification and was also Wildland Red Card certified. He always wanted to do his best in whatever he set out to do. He cherished the great brotherhood he had with his fellow firefighters. He was active in Christ Lutheran Church serving on different committees.

Neal enjoyed preparing meals for a crowd, large or small. Sahling Catering was a passion he shared with his wife Jackie. Neal also had recently run his first 10K in honor of their daughter Genevieve Marie. Neal was united in marriage to Jackie Hubby on February 16, 1991. They raised 3 children.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons, Jeffrey Hubby & wife Kristin of Omaha and Ian Sahling of Prosser; granddaughters, Kaydence & Stella Hubby; sisters & brothers in laws: Lynn & Kim Struebing of Lincoln; Shelley & Todd Zart of Lincoln; brother and sister in law: Scott & Mary Sahling of Worms and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by their daughter, Genevieve Marie and his parents, Donna & LaMonte Sahling.

In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting memorials to the Gena Sahling Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Kenesaw Public Schools or to Christ Lutheran Schools for the new addition.

Eugene 'Gene' Salazar

Eugene ‘Gene’ Salazar, Jr., 81, of Grand Island, died Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Grand Island Veterans’ Home with his family at his side.

Service will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Grand Island Veterans’ Home Chapel. Chaplain Bill Noer will officiate. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Hastings with Military Honors provided by U.S. Marine Corps and Hastings Honor Guard.

Visitation is one hour prior to service time. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters and son-in-law, Penni and Dusty Holdeman and Cindi Salazar, all of Hastings and brothers, Donald Salazar of Hastings and Ronald Salazar of Chicago, IL.

He is also survived by four grandchildren, Talitha Wallace, Tabitha Holdeman, Sierra Salazar and Antonio Salazar and Uncle Jerry Lovejoy of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Jackie Salazar; son, Eugene Salazar III and an infant son, Paul Anthony Salazar.

Gene grew up and attended school in Chicago. When he was 17, he entered the United States Marine Corps. He was inducted December 13, 1951 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged April 1, 1958.

Gene was united in marriage to Jackie Ross on September 18, 1956 in Hastings. The couple eventually made their home in Hastings where they owned and operated Gene’s Upholstery for 35 years. Gene retired in 2004.

Gene loved to work with his hands. He got his start in upholstery while working at Pioneer Village, and refurbished the interiors of the majority of the cars on display there. He enjoyed vintage and street rod car shows, refurbishing many of the vehicles’ interiors. His enjoyments included camping and fishing. Above all, he loved and lived for his family.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Loretta M. Schmidt

Loretta M. Schmidt, 92 of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Tabitha Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Celebration of life service will be Sunday, June 24, 2012, 11 a.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island at a later date.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Larry Mitchell of Arizona City AZ, and Charlotte and Rod Hazzard of Lincoln NE; grandchildren Greg Bauer, Sheila Brennise (Scott), both of Craig CO, Marcus Bernt (Liz) of Kearney NE and Michele Jensen (Brandon) of Aurora CO; two great-grandchildren Kasen and Kinlie Brennise; and brothers Fay and Leo Gillham both of St Paul NE.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles (CJ) Smith; sister, Irene Murphy; and brothers, Raymond and Gerald Gillham.

Loretta was born icon June 10, 1920 in Scotia, the daughter of Jess and Ruby (Kelley) Gillham.

She received her education in Greeley County Nebraska, graduating from Scotia High School, class of 1938. She married Harold Smith on August 14, 1939. The couple lived in Wolbach where she taught grade school for four years. They moved to Denver in 1950 for special medical treatment for their son, returning to Nebraska in 1956 when they purchased the Spalding Livestock Market. There she managed the office and café they built. After selling the market she became office manager for the Ericson Livestock Auction for seven years. Following that, she commuted for over four years to Omaha then Denver working as auction market office manager for the Omaha Stock Yards and Denver Livestock Auction Exchange.

In 1977, Loretta moved to Grand Island where she was employed by E.F. Hutton until retiring in 1980. In 1979, she married Chuck Schmidt and together they made their home in Grand Island.

Loretta cherished her children and grand-children who added so much pleasure to her life. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her many friends.

Loretta was a member of VFW Auxiliary, First United Methodist Church and Evangelical Free Church.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to Tabitha Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.

Robert E. 'Bob' Schnuelle

Robert E. ‘Bob’ Schnuelle, age 81, of Grand Island, died Saturday July 7, 2012 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Robert E. ‘Bob’ SchnuelleMemorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 12 at the All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The family will receive visitors beginning at 9:30. Following the service, inurnment with military honors will take place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE. Joint burial of Mr. and Mrs. Schnuelle’s ashes will take place at 3:00 p.m.

Bob was born icon on May 21, 1931, in Omaha, NE. He was adopted by Clarence F. and Pearl (Wilson) Schnuelle. Bob attended school in Gering, Dannebrog, and Gibbon, graduating from Gibbon High School in 1949. He attended UNL. Bob enlisted in the USMC and served as a Sergeant until his honorable discharge in 1951. Returning to NE after his military service, Bob met and married Sara Jane Krebs on November 2, 1952 in Kearney. The couple lived in Hastings and Grand Island. They were married for 49 years until Sara passed away on January 27, 2002.

Bob’s career was in Broadcast Media, both radio and television. Bob started out at KGFW Radio in Kearney and transitioned to television in 1952. Bob opened Channels 5, 13, and 11 as an anchor, putting all three stations on the air. His television career began at KHOL-TV (now NTV) and moved to KHAS Radio and Television, in Hastings, in 1953. Bob joined KOLN/KGIN in 1960. He drove to Lincoln every Saturday and did the news for Channel 10 KOLN TV at 6 and 10 for 14 years. In 1973 he was promoted to general manager of Channel 11/KGIN TV in Grand Island. Bob managed the Grand Island bureau for 13 years, working globally in advertising, delivering news and announcements, hosting public affairs programs, recording innumerable voiceovers, and tirelessly promoting Grand Island. A massive stroke in 1977 took his speech and forced him to leave the airwaves. While he worked hard and regained his speech, he never returned to the air, and retired in 1986.

Bob received numerous awards for civic and fraternal organization involvement. In 1961, Governor Morrison named him Admiral in the Great Navy of Nebraska in recognition of his work in promoting Nebraska Tourism, Growth, Industry, and growth. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1974, a board member of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association, President of the NE Broadcasters Association in 1974, and was a Pioneer Broadcaster. Bob was inducted into the Nebraska Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1979. He was State Chair of the Marine Corps League, general chairman of the Grand Island Community Development Council, and vice chairman of the Goals for Nebraska Committee. Bob served as a board member for the Rotary Club, GI Chamber of Commerce,and the Grand Island Community Chest. He was also active in the American Legion, Ak-Sar-Ben, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Grand Island Industrial Foundation, and the Tri-City Coordinating Council. He was a member of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Supreme Court’s Fifth District and a lay member of the Conflict of Interest Committee for the State of Nebraska. He was Chancellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias and was awarded by the Optimist Club.

Bob was passionate about community –building, and helping make Grand Island a progressive, growing community. He worked hard to help Grand Island achieve its All American City designation in 1967 and received an Oscar award from the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce for the film, “This Is Grand Island, A Profile of Progress.”

Bob strongly believed in life-long learning opportunities and worked to establish a community college in Grand Island. He was on the founders of Central Community College, and served on the CCC Board of Governors from 1975 until his retirement in 1990. He was elected vice chairman in 1979 and then chairman in 1981. He advocated for the role of technical education in preparing a skilled workforce for Nebraska.

Prior to his stroke he was very active: an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman, enjoyed metal detecting, swimming, camping, and particularly loved the outdoors. He was very social, enjoying hosting many barbeques, playing cards, and traveling.

Following his stroke he continued to enjoy being outdoors, reading, and spending time in his neighborhood. He had many friends and was very social, often saying he never met a stranger.

Bob moved to the Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home in 2007 where he had many friends and deeply appreciated the kindness and exceptionally good care he received.

Bob’s personal motto was: “You play the hand you are dealt.” The stroke completely changed his life and some of his activities, but not his ability to find enjoyment and meaning in life. Part of his enduring legacy was his ability to deeply enjoy his life, even in circumstances many people would find tragic. He was a lesson on living in the moment and not wasting precious time on regret.

Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Shari Schnuelle and Richard Sharkey, a son Robert K. Schnuelle of Grand Island and Annie Schnuelle of Manitowoc, WI; grandchildren Brian and Rachel Sharkey, and Amanda Sharkey, of Casper, WY; six great-grandchildren, niece Linda Petersen; and nephew Kern and Marsha Petersen of California.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara; and his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children’s Home or Tabitha Hospice.

Raymond M. Schoonver

Raymond M. Schoonover, 85, of Grand Island, NE, died Friday, July 13, 2012 at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at the All Faiths Chapel of the Grand Island Veterans Home. Military Honors will be performed by the U.S. Army. Burial of ashes will be at Cedar Memorial Cemetery at Cedar Rapids, IA.

Pastors Bill Nore and Dorothy Molczyk will officiate.

All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Raymond was born icon September 28, 1926 at Sioux City, IA, the son of Raymond Maxwell and Celia (Meyers) Schoonover. He was raised in Sioux City, where he received his education. Raymond joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1948 to 1952 and achieved the rank of Corporal. He was united in marriage to Erika Wolffgramm in 1952, in Berlin, Germany. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, IA. Raymond retired from National Oats after 25 years of service.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Renate and James Pemberton of Villa Park, IL; and son, LeRoy Schoonover of Crawfordville, FL; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Raymond was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed working on various crafts in the Veterans Home workshops.

He was welcomed into heaven by his wife, Erika; parents; sister, Melvina Johnson; and a grandson, Matthew White.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Veterans Home.
