Gordon Hodges Sheffield
Gordon Hodges Sheffield, 95, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the Grand Island NE Veterans Home.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 13 at the Grand Island Veterans Home All Faiths Chapel. Reverend Lonnie Logan and Chaplain William Noer will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes and graveside services will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha with Reverend Keith Cook will officiating and military honors provided.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at All Faiths Funeral Home.
There will also be a gathering held at the Presbyterian Church of the Master in Omaha ( 10710 Corby Circle) from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 Noon following the inurnment on Saturday, July 14.
Mr. Sheffield was born
October 29, 1916 at Storm Lake, Iowa, to Ralph E. and Edna (Hodges) Sheffield. His wife, Dorothy Sheffield, preceded him in death on August 29, 1999.
Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter and son-in-law, Dori and David Bush of Grand Island; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Bruce and Margaret Sheffield of Raymond and Robert and Cindy Sheffield of Omaha; sister, Helen Langner of Storm Lake, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Ruth Sheffield of Midland, Michigan.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Matthew Bush (Leticia Robles) of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Tyler Bush and Scott Sheffield of Lincoln; Rebecca (Randi) Gathje of Kearney; Heather, Chad and Adam Sheffield of Omaha; great-granddaughter, Elle Sheffield; great-grandson, Ryan Gathje; and many nieces and nephews.
He was welcomed into Heaven by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; sister, Ruth Cunningham; brother, Paul Sheffield and a nephew, Morris Langner.
Mr. Sheffield grew up in Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1934. He attended Buena Vista College (now University) and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1939, a member of Rho Chi Honor Society. Following graduation, he worked at Triplett’s Drug Store in Storm Lake and then at the Toller Drug Store in Sioux City, Iowa. In September, 1940, Mr. Sheffield began a pharmaceutical sales career with Eli Lilly Co., living first in Creston, Iowa.
On August 4, 1940, he was married to Dorothy Mae Schultz at First Methodist Church in Storm Lake.
In January, 1943, Mr. Sheffield began training with the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina with the 1 st Convalescent Hospital which was activated and accepted patients for a year beginning in November, 1944 on the east coast of Leyte, in the Philippine Islands. In May, 1945, Mr. Sheffield received a direct commission as a 2 nd Lt. He was honorably discharged in February, 1946. He was a 67 year member of the American Legion Post #1 ( Omaha). Following the war, Mr. Sheffield resumed his employment with Eli Lilly, working in Ottumwa, Iowa and retiring in Omaha, Nebraska in 1978.
Mr. Sheffield and his wife resided in Omaha from 1950-1979 and in Sun City, Arizona from 1979 until Mrs. Sheffield passed away in 1999. Mr. Sheffield moved to Grand Island in 2000 to be closer to his family, living at Riverside Lodge until moving to the Nebraska Veterans Home in April, 2007. Mr. Sheffield’s family would like to express sincere gratefulness to the Veterans Home staff and to the caring staff of AseraCare Hospice for their gentle care of our father and grandfather.
Mr. Sheffield was very active in Trinity Methodist Church and later at the Presbyterian Church of the Master while living in Omaha and was an Elder at Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City, Arizona. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. He enjoyed his family, reading, music and watching all sports, particularly basketball and golf. Prior to January, 2007, he was a prolific correspondent with many friends and relatives. Mr. Sheffield was a kind and generous father and grandfather, who will be greatly missed by his family and who will be remembered by many acquaintances.
In thankfulness for, and because of his belief in the importance of education, Mr. Sheffield and his wife established memorial scholarships at Buena Vista University, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, Simpson College ( Iowa), University of Dubuque ( Iowa), and Cottey College ( Missouri).
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dorothy M. Sheffield Scholarship at Cottey College, 1000 W. Austin, Nevada, MO 64772, AseraCare Hospice and the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Mary J. Sondergaard
Mary J. Sondergaard, 61 of Grand Island died Saturday, February 11, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church. Reverend Harvey Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sondergaard was born
May 11, 1950 at Sutton, West Virginia the daughter of Woodrow and Norma Jean (Dodrill) Thomas.
Her husband Edmund James Sondergaard, Sr. preceded her in death on October 23, 2006.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Edmund Jr. “Jim” and Lisa Sondergaard of Grand Island and daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Scott Becker of Grand Island; her mother, Norma Jean Thomas of West Virginia; mother-in-law, Lilly Sondergaard of Grand Island; brothers and sister-in-law, Jim and Janette Thomas of West Virginia and Steve Thomas of West Virginia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barb and JR Cook of West Virginia, Becky and Gary Keyser of Ohio and Shirley Meeks of California and sister-in-law and her husband, Sharon and Art Hogan of Omaha.
Other survivors are her grandchildren, Maria, Meagan, Taylor, Evan, Kaitlin, Thomas and Tyler; and nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Thomas and father-in-law, Edmund P. Sondergaard.
Mary was raised at Muddlety, West Virginia graduating from Nicholas County High School in 1968. She attended Glenville State College in West Virginia.
She was united in marriage to Edmund James Sondergaard on September 6, 1970 at Browns Mills, NJ. They made Grand Island their home since 1971. Mary worked at Swift for over 30 years.
Mary was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She loved traveling with her family, shopping, watching football; she loved her dogs and cats. Most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren. During her earlier life she played on a traveling softball team and later on a coed softball team.
Memorials are to be given in care of the family to be designated at a later date.
Norma M. Staab
Norma M. Staab, 88 of Grand Island died Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Tiffany Square Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Evangelical Free Church. Reverend Gary Schulte will officiate. To honor Mrs. Staab’s request cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mrs. Staab was born
September 27, 1923 at Mason City, NE the daughter of Charles and Petra (Lauridsen) Mohr.
Her husband Glenn Staab preceded her in death in 2004.
Survivors are children and their spouses, Eldon and Ann Staab of Centennial, CO, Jean and Gaylord Jensen of St. Libory and Charles and Lana Staab of Grand Island.
Those also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Tony and Melissa Staab, Nick and Jeannette Staab, Tammie and Tony Berck, JoDee and Todd Hubbard, Greg and Rebecca Raymond and Jeff and Jeanette Raymond and 12 great-grandchildren and special friend, Erm Hiser of Grand Island.
Norma was raised on a farm near Mason City graduating from Mason City High School. She taught elementary school from 1941-1943. On March 29, 1943 she was united in marriage to Glenn Staab. They lived in Ansley and Berwyn area farming until 1959. They moved to Broken Bow where Norma worked at the Bakery and Universal Insurance Agency until 1976. They moved to Grand Island where she worked until her retirement at Rich and Sons Camper Sales.
She attended the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island. Some of her enjoyments were camping, reading, sewing, going to coffee at Skagway north and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to Evangelical Free Church, Hope Harbor or the Crisis Center.
Francis E. 'Butch' Stenka
Francis E. ‘Butch’ Stenka, 67, of Ogallala, formerly of Grand Island and Kearney, died Monday, May 28, 2012, at Mount Caramel Nursing Home in Kearney with his family at his side.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. Father Joseph K. Joseph will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and Grand Island Veterans’ Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the church with a Rosary at 7:00. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Butch was born
April 8, 1945 in Grand Island, the son of Leonard and Catherine (Stenka) McCarty.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sandra of Ogallala; children and their spouses, Otis Dale Stenka, Connie Finley, both of Grand Island, Peggy Stults of Kearney, Chris Stenka of Ogallala, Rena (Victor) Zapata of Kearney, Francis II (Kari) Stenka of Kearney; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom (Luz) McCarty of Arlington, TX, Leonard (Eunice) McCarty of Grand Island, Dennis (Wendy) McCarty of Grand Island and David (June) McCarty of Arlington, NE; and sister and brother-in-law, Linda (John) Pedrosa of Lincoln; several aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, Drew, Dusty, Skylar, Jessica, Brian, Chris, Shawn, Michelle, Rochelle, Harley, Cody, Rena, Chris, Dakota and Zackary.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Devin Hatcher and Raymond Hatcher and a daughter-in-law, Tresa Stenka.
Butch grew up and attended school in Grand Island. He entered the United States Army on October 24, 1962 and was discharged January 24, 1966. Butch was united in marriage to Sandra Sue Stults on February 9, 1967, in Grand Island. They made their home in Grand Island, Denver, and Kearney, with their final move in 2006 to Ogallala.
Butch was a member of the VFW and a strong member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed camping, four wheeling, and fishing, and had a real passion for hunting. He will be remembered as a gentle, generous, loving man and only a ‘little’ stubborn. He dearly loved his wife and family, especially his grandchildren and had a nickname for each one.

Dale W. Stolle
Dale W. Stolle, 62 of Grand Island died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Dan Naranjo will officiate.
To honor Mr. Stolle’s wishes cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Mr. Stolle was born
March 15, 1950 at Grand Island the son of Wilmer and Nancy (Fuerstenau) Stolle.
Survivors include his wife Nancy; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jeff Good of Seward, NE and sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Tom Patterson of Kennewick, Washington.
His parents preceded him in death.
Dale was raised in California where he graduated from Savannah High School in 1968. He was united in marriage to Nancy Koester on September 30, 1975 at Las Vegas, NV. They made their home in Grand Island where Dale was employed by Chief Industries for over 20 years.
He is a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Sons of the American Legion and the Platt-Duetsche. Dale enjoyed NASCAR racing and playing golf.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
Harry William Stoltenberg
Harry William Stoltenberg 79, of Grand Island died peacefully at home on Friday, January 27, 2012.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Caroline Price-Gibson will officiate. Burial will be held at the Grand Island Cemetery with military honors by the United Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home with the family present from 5:30-7pm.
Harry was born
on January 21, 1933 in Omaha, Nebraska to Harry and Edna (Schamp) Stoltenberg.
Survivors include, his wife and best friend of 52 years Harlene of Grand Island; a daughter Jane and her husband Tim of Lincoln; a son, David and his wife Nicki and son, Robert and his wife Joanna all of Grand Island.
He is also survived by his precious grandchildren Logan, Ashley, Trey, Wil and Jon Stoltenberg as well as brother-in-law and his wife, Harlan and Connie Sawyer of North Platte. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews who he loved and adored.
Harry grew up in Ainsworth and attended and graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1950. He was a talented athlete involved in football, baseball, basketball and track. Harry was drafted and inducted into the US Army in 1951 and served his country with pride and honor. He graduated from Northeast Community College in Norfolk, NE in 1957.
Harry and Harlene were united in marriage on August 9, 1959 at the Congregational Church in Ainsworth, NE. The couple lived in Des Moines, Omaha and Superior, NE before transferring to Grand Island. Harry managed the Hested's in all of the aforementioned locations. Upon the sale of the Grand Island Hested's, Harry worked at various different Grand Island businesses. He owned a restaurant in town, he worked for Food Services of America as a sales person supplier and later retired after working for the Grand Island Public School District.
He was an avid Yankees and Husker fan and loved watching his teams. He even had an opportunity to visit the original Yankees Stadium. Harry was very active in community and devoted to his church. He was a member of several civic organizations including: Kiwanis, Elks, and many others. He was a Sunday School teacher and was involved in the Stephen's ministry for shut-in while in Grand Island. He enjoyed family get togethers, reunions, and being with the people who made his life whole. He loved going to kid's athletic and school activities and enjoyed the same activities with his grandchildren.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Edna as well as his sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Bill Lambley, and sister Beverly Moravec.
Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island.
Robert Eugene Sutton
Robert Eugene Sutton, 91 of Vero Beach Florida, formerly of Grand Island died Monday, April 9, 2012 in a hospice house in Vero Beach.
Private graveside services will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
