Glenda M. 'Shorty' (Johnston) Tyrrell

Glenda M. ‘Shorty’ [Johnston] Tyrrell, of Loup City, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, with her family at her side after courageously battling Ocular Melanoma and the ensuing complications.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 25th at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. Reverend Murry Johnston will officiate. Burial of ashes will be 1:00 Wednesday in Fairview Cemetery at Phillipsburg, KS.

Visitation will be Monday, from 12:30 until service time, at the funeral home.

Glenda was born icon March 7, 1934, at Norcatur, KS, the daughter of Fred and Fern (O’Hare) Zweigle.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Richard Tyrrell of Loup City; children and their spouses, Jackie Aubert and Karl Young of Cairo, Rhonda Heuson and George Hamaker of Grand Island, Richard Heuson of Corpus Christi, TX, Mary Maret and Scott Evans of Loup City, Linda and Phillip Sloup of Seward, and Michael and Barbara Johnston of Henderson, NV; brother, Charles Zweigle of Colby, KS; sisters and brother-in-law, Vickie and Dan Lippelmann of Oberlin, KS, Vonda Alexander of Frederick, CO, and Gay Anders of Des Moines, IA.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and a great great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, George Anderson; and a grandson, Travis Lundell.

Glenda grew up and attended school at Norcatur, KS, graduating from Norcatur High School. She waitressed many years at the Satellite Club and Riverside Golf Course in Grand Island. Glenda fulfilled a lifelong desire to be a nurse when she returned to school and was certified as a CNA at the age of 64. She worked with Alzheimer patients for ten years at the Christian Homes in Holdrege and Andbe Home in Norton, KS.

Glenda was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Ocular Melanoma. She was so very passionate about finding a cure for her disease, donating tissue to researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, working toward a cure for OM.

Glenda was passionate about life in general. She loved people and had a servant’s heart. She spent her entire life serving those around her. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and generously devoted her time to them. Glenda was an enthusiastic Husker Football fan and an avid gardener who was especially fond of her ‘Almost Black’ roses. She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her by her tireless work ethic, feisty nature, and determined spirit.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Ocular Melanoma Foundation, PO Box 29261, Richmond, VA 23242.

Thomas 'Tom' Unrein

Thomas ‘Tom’ Unrein, 52, of Grand Island, journeyed to his heavenly home on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Reverend Sheri Lodel will officiate. To honor Tom’s wishes, cremation will have taken place.

Gathering of family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Tom was born icon September 21, 1959, in Longmont, Colorado, the youngest child of Cyril and Mary (Kuhn) Unrein.

Those left to cherish his memory include his cherished wife, Mary; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernie and Loree Unrein, Cy and Linda Unrein, Mel and Cathy Unrein and David and Yvonne Unrein, all of Colorado; sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene and Cecil Bohall, Carolyn and Vince Cummins, Joy McDonald, Phyllis Unrein, Mary Kay Unrein, also of Colorado, and Joyce and Warren Bertrang of Valentine, NE.

He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Anne Unrein and Gloria Powell, of Colorado; brother-in-law, John Curley of Massachusetts; Mary’s family, Mel, Betty, Jim, Karen, Russ and Cathy Larson; many nieces and nephews; numerous friends; and his feline ‘girls’, Samantha and Tabitha.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Betty Lou Unrein, Darrell Unrein, Denis Unrein, Ralph Unrein and Jeanne Curley.

Tom was raised in Mead, CO and attended school in Mead and Longmont High School. He met Mary Larson of Meckling, SD in 1985 and they were united in marriage on October 25, 1986, in Thornton, CO. The couple moved to Arizona for a time while Tom was employed by Continental Airlines. They then moved back to the Midwest to be closer to their families, moving to Grand Island in 1989.

Tom was employed by Hornady Manufacturing and Steve’s Appliance for several years and was currently employed by Case New Holland.

He was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church and had a passion for Drama Ministry. His strong faith was a comfort during his illness. He loved his kitties, playing cards, good food and fellowship with his friends. His enjoyments included hunting, fishing, gardening, stock car racing and his newest hobby, watching mud drag racing. Always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, Tom will be remembered for his wit and unique ‘Tom-isms’.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Calvary Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.

Jean Ann Wagner

Jean Ann Wagner, 74, of Grand Island, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 at her home.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 29 th at Faith United Methodist Church. Reverend Matthew Fowler will officiate. To honor her wishes, cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be at a later time at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Jean was born icon December 27, 1937, in Grand Island, the daughter of Paul and Marie (Hausman) Shanks.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 56 years, Dix Wagner; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Susan Wagner of Grand Island; and sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Harry Priesendorf of Grand Island.

She is also survived by two granddaughters, Geri (husband, Jesse) Kaufman of Gretna and Hollen Wagner of Chadron; a great-granddaughter, Adayln Kaufman and brother-in-law, Jim Swett of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Danny Wagner; daughter, Kimberly Wagner and sister, Betty Swett.

Jean grew up and attended school in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High, Class of 1953. She was united in marriage to Dix Wagner on August 18, 1955 in Grand Island. The couple spent several years in Omaha before returning to Grand Island in 1971. For many years she was a nurse aide at Lebensraum. Dix and Jean were co-chairman/secretary/treasurer of Union Pacific Railroad Olde Timers club.

For 29 years Jean and Dix displayed a Christmas Tree done in Union Pacific decorations at the Stuhr Museum annual tree display. The best wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother anyone could have wished for, Jean lived to take care of others.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.

Ruth D. Wahlgren

Ruth D. Wahlgren, 91, of Grand Island, formerly of Gothenburg, died Friday, September 21, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center with family at her side.

To honor Ruth’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Gothenburg Cemetery. The Reverend Roy Wahlgren is officiating. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Ruth was born icon October 12, 1920 at Etna, Wayne Township in Custer County, to George and Lily (Cross) Aunspaugh.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons and daughters-in-law, Col Van Wahlgren M.D. and Kelly of Ogallala, Maj Lynn Wahlgren and June of Chesapeake, Virginia and Wesley and Shirley Wahlgren of Grand Island; sisters, Verna Dell Brunkhorst of Mitchell, NE and Janet Schmitz of Medford, Oregon; and sister-in-law, Signe Block of Boulder, CO.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Stacie and Jonathan Wahlgren, Leslie Reynolds, Jennifer and James Wahlgren and Harry and William Wahlgren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Wahlgren; parents; son, William ‘Billy’ Wahlgren; brothers, Lt. William Aunspaugh and Lt. Merle ‘Tot’ Aunspaugh; and sister, Shirley Fochtman.

Ruth grew up in Gothenburg, receiving her education at Gothenburg Public Schools and Kearney State College. Ruth attained her teaching certificate and taught at numerous rural Gothenburg area schools, including District 89, Darr, 100-R and Valley Schools.

She was united in marriage to Harry F. Wahlgren, June 22, 1946. The couple made Gothenburg their home, raising four sons.

Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church and Nebraska State Teachers’ Assoc. She enjoyed socializing and loved to volunteer at Gothenburg Public School, the nursing homes and Gothenburg Senior Center. Her hobbies included reading, gardening and quilting. She was also an honorary longtime suffering Dodgers fan. Above all, she cherished her grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Public Library.

Etha M. Walters

Etha M. Walters, 98 of Grand Island died Friday, April 6, 2012 at Tiffany Square Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Chambers, Nebraska Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before service time.

Mrs. Walters was born icon June 25, 1913 at Chambers, NE the daughter of Edward and Sarah (McMillan) Adams.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Walters who died December 5, 1990.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Dennis and Diane Walters of Albion, NE, Margene and John Arensberg of Commerce City, Colorado and “Clo” CloEtha and Bruce Swihart of Grand Island.

Those also left to cherish her memory are 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. She was welcomed into heaven by her husband; her parents and ten brothers and sisters.

Etha was raised at Chambers graduating from Chambers High School. She received her BA degree from Wayne State College and continued with her graduate studies. On June 2, 1935 she was united in marriage to Arthur Charles Walters.

Etha retired from teaching school after 42 ½ years of service in education. She began her teaching career in 1932 having taught at Chambers, O’Neill, Amelia, Stuart and in Rural Schools. She served as Deputy County Superintendent for two years.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Chambers having served as choir director and church organist. After moving to Grand Island in 1996 Etha played the piano at Riverside Lodge for chapel and musical programs.

A memorial fund will be established in Etha’s name.

Gerald M. 'Jerry' Welliver

Gerald M. ‘Jerry’ Welliver, 76, of Grand Island, died Friday, October 05, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center.

To honor Jerry’s wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home with military honors provided by the United States Army and Grand Island Honor Guard. Daniel Naranjo will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Jerry was born icon March 31, 1936 at Lexington, Nebraska, the son of Max and Lela (Sloan) Welliver.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joan; his children, Toby Welliver and Jodi (James) Desbien; four stepsons, Dudley, Dan, and Tim Myers and Johnny Rohrer and two stepdaughters, Patricia (Verne) Penas and Dede Rohrer; and sister Nancy Nolan of Washington.

He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jerry grew up and attended school in Lexington, graduating from Lexington High School. He entered the United States Army on August 28, 1953 and was honorably discharged on May 27, 1958. He considered it an honor to have served his country.

He was united in marriage to Marlene Olkers and later married Joan Stalker on September 1, 1996.

Jerry was a proud member of AA and had just received his 21 year medallion. He loved old western movies. A ‘jack of all trades’, Jerry built a home for his loving wife. He will be remembered for his unique laugh and his gentle spirit.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Patty J. Whitt

Patty J. Whitt, 69, of Grand Island, died Thursday, March 1, 2011, at home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church. Reverend Harvey Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Patty was born icon on October 3, 1942 at Grand Island, NE, the daughter of Phillip Thelma (McClurkin) Van Bibber.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son and his wife, Scott and Jeanie Whitt of Marquette; brothers and their wives, Donald and Nancy Van Bibber Grand Island, Roy and Catherine Van Bibber of Grand Island, Roger and Connie Van Bibber of Boelus; and sister, Louise Andersen of Grand Island.

Those also left to cherish her memory are, grandchildren, Mari and her husband Justin Boehler of Grand Island, Sara and her fiancé Trent Hiatt of Kearney and Corry and Jill Powers of Westminster, CO; great grandchildren, Jackson Boehler, Daylon MaGraw, Amanda Powers and Holly Powers; sisters in law, Alberta Perkins of Grand Island, Leanna (Larry) Casford of Fresno, CA, and Susan Whitt of Lake Erickson, NE; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was welcomed into heaven by her father Phillip and mothers, Thelma (McClurkin) Van Bibber and Ella Van Bibber; her husband James; and her son, Jeffrey.

Patty was raised in Grand Island. She received her education from Grand Island Senior High School, class of 1960. She married James Whitt on July 23, 1961 in Grand Island. Patty was a crossing guard for 30 years for Jefferson Elementary School. Patty was loved by many and had a hug for everyone.

She is a member of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eagles Club.

Memorials are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
