David C. Powers

David C. Powers, 80, of Grand Island, passed away, Friday, May 25, 2012, at the Nebraska Veterans Hospital in Grand Island.

A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 30th at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial of ashes will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time.

David was born icon December 28, 1931 at Marshalltown, IA, to George and Anna (Vajgrt) Powers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Rosemary; son, Jeff Powers of Grand Island; grandchildren, Cody, Alec, Brady, and Haley Powers; and a daughter-in-law Melinda Powers; sisters, Clarice (Russ) Kephart of Tennesee, and Katherine Hiatt of Flippin, AR.

David was welcomed into heaven by his parents; an infant daughter Laura; and a son, Jim.

David grew up in Marshalltown, IA where he received his education. After high school he attended the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelors degree. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Higham on January 7, 1956 at Marshalltown, IA.

David was an avid volunteer at the Elks Club, the Veterans Hospital and the Veterans Home.

David was a member of the Elks Club, where he served two terms as the Exalted Ruler, the Saddle Club, the State Vet Committee, American Legion and the Platt-Deutsche Society.

Memorials are suggested to the Family.

Thelma Mae Shovlain

Thelma Mae Shovlain, 91, of Grand Island died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Golden Living Center Lakeview in Grand Island.

A private family celebration of her life will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Shovlain was thinking of others when she chose to donate her body to the Anatomical Board of Nebraska. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mrs. Shovlain and her identical twin sister Wilma Grace were born icon on August 7, 1920 in Worden, MT to William Gregory Caster and Margaret (Dick) Caster.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Rich Skelton of Dana Pt. CA, and a son and daughter-in-law Gary and Linda Shovlain of Grand Island, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and her brother and sister-in-law Richard and Margaret Caster of Worden, MT.

Thelma attended Huntley Project school in Worden and graduated from Huntley Project High School in 1938. After the death of her twin sister, Thelma lived in Woodward, OK with her married sister Claire and family. After moving back to Montana she worked in the Worden Post Office. On December 17, 1941 Thelma was united in marriage to Bernard Shovlain in Salt Lake City, UT. They moved to Nebraska and lived in Lexington, Kearney, and Grand Island.

Thelma worked at the A & W Drive Inn and Willman's Grocery in Grand Island for many years. Thelma was a parishioner of St. Leo’s Catholic Church where she volunteered and assisted with funeral receptions. She and Bernard attended many events and dances at Elks Clubs and other social clubs. They enjoyed playing bridge with other couples. She was an accomplished seamstress and continued to enjoy playing bridge with friends throughout her life.

Thelma will be remembered for her many qualities of humor and quick wit, her fashion style, her friends and most of all her generosity and sentimentality towards all children, especially her grandchildren.

Thelma was preceded in death by her twin sister who died at age 13, sisters, Jesse Guptill, Janice Roberts, Claire Kramer, her parents and her husband, Bernard Shovlain.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Glen A. 'Butch' Spidle

Glen A. ‘Butch’ Spidle, Jr., 59, of Grand Island, died Monday, February 20, 2012 at Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 24, at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Butch was born icon June 29, 1952 in Grand Island, the son of Glen A. and Emma (Miller) Spidle.

Survivors include his daughter, Dierdre O’Gorman and her husband, Ryan Korkie of Denver, Colorado; and sister, Jacque Fegter of Des Moines, Iowa.

He is also survived by a niece, Dannell (Matt) Runge; a nephew, Jeff (Jennifer) Fegter; two great nieces and five great nephews; and two great great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Butch grew up and received his education in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High, Class of ’71.

Butch spent his entire adult life caring for and tending to the needs of animals. He was with the Central Nebraska Humane Society when he lived in Grand Island previously. After relocating to Des Moines, IA, he was employed by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. (ARL), Iowa’s largest nonprofit animal shelter, which cares for many thousands of animals each year. Butch continued working with animals in both Illinois and South Carolina, managing the facilities in S. Carolina until his health began to fail. He returned to the Grand Island area in 2002.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Roger D. Taylor

Roger D. Taylor, 81, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Wedgewood Care Center.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 2nd at Calvary Lutheran Church. Reverend Sheri Lodel will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 9:30 until service time on Monday at the church.

Roger was born icon June 1, 1931, Milford, NE. His parents were Otto and Nellie (Bridges) Taylor.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sandra ‘Sandy’; daughters, Sue Taylor and special friend, Dick Schwieger of Grand Island and Karen Johnson and her husband, Ray of Ravenna.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Chelsea Taylor of Lincoln, and Seth, Ryan, Kaia and Hanna Johnson of Ravenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Opal Taylor.

Roger grew up in Callaway, attending school and graduating from Callaway High School, Class of 1949. He furthered his schooling at the School of Electronics in Chicago. Roger entered the United States Army on October 4, 1951 and was honorably discharged October 6, 1953. He was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Liles, in Callaway, on August 16, 1959.

Roger owned and operated Taylor’s TV and Appliance in Callaway. The couple moved to Hastings in 1963 where Roger was employed by Roger’s Inc. The family moved to Grand Island in 1966 when Roger began working for Xerox Corporation. He worked for Xerox from 1966 to 1982. He later worked at Modern Methods and Dillards Dept. Store, retiring in 1993.

Roger was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and the Elks Club. He enjoyed watching all sports, especially football and baseball and was an avid Husker fan. Roger enjoyed the horse races at Fonner Park. Roger was happiest spending time with family and was especially proud of his grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Calvary Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.

Keith E. Versaw

Keith E. Versaw, 82 of Grand Island, died Sunday August 12, 2012 at the Grand Island Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Reverend Lonnie Logan will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force and United Veterans Honor Guard. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Franklin Cemetery.

Keith resided at the Riverside Lodge. Throughout his life he faced challenges with faith, a deep sense of duty to country and family, and a profound work ethic. Obstacles were turned to opportunities. Keith wanted to be a meteorologist in the Air Force but gave his billet to another. If he had not done so, he would not have met his wife of 49 years, Mickie.

When blessed with a child with special needs he gave up farming and instead built a career making better seeds for others to grow. Keith was a proud alumnus of the University of Nebraska, an accomplished woodworker and also earned the status of Master Gardner.

In retirement, Keith donated time to the Ronald McDonald House helping families with sick children. He was a long-time member of the American Legion and a Korean War era veteran.

His unfulfilled bucket list included a visit to the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. Keith had five children, one who preceded him in death, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He imparted guidance to his children through quips that included “People can smell half-ass and lazy from a mile away”. His family and friends shall miss him. Godspeed Keith.

LuVerne (Verne) Voss

LuVerne (Verne) Voss, 86 of Grand Island died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Grand Island Veterans Administration Medical Center with his family by his side.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. The Reverend Charles L. Torpey will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy.

Visitation with family greeting friends will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Voss was born icon February 4, 1926 at Ashland, NE the son of John and Agnes (Krahmer) Voss.

Survivors are his wife of 61 years, Mary; sons and daughter-in-law, Tom Voss of Grand Island and Tim and Lisa Voss of Lincoln; daughters and son-in-law, Jean Mohnike of Grand Island, Kathy and Tim Jakubowski of Grand Island and Julie and Rick Metcalf of McCook.

Those also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Corey Mohnike, Eric Mohnike, Michael Voss, Ann Behn, Hannah Voss, Sarah Voss, Jared Metcalf and Jake Metcalf and great-granddaughter, Ella Mohnike.

His parents; a brother, Donald Voss and an infant sister preceded him in death.

Verne graduated from Ashland High School, class of 1944. He entered the United States Navy serving as a radio operator in the South Pacific during WWII.

On March 26, 1951 he was united in marriage to Mary Dunn at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The couple made their home in Grand Island where Verne worked for the telephone company for over 42 years.

Verne is a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, the Platt-Duetsche and American Legion. Following his service in the Navy as a radio operator, Verne continued his love as a Ham Radio Operator; having the call letters WORVQ. He also enjoyed his yard work, gardening and love for his family.

A memorial fund will be established in memory of Verne.

Georgia M. Watkins

Georgia M. Watkins, 71, of Grand Island, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

A Celebration of Georgia’s Life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday at her home. The address is 403 North Grace Ave, Grand Island, NE 68803.

Georgia was born icon on October 10, 1940 in Marion, IN, the daughter of Leslie and Ruth (Gwin) Croussore.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Billy; 5 children; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and one stepson.

Those also left to cherish her memory are her brothers, John of Florida, Marvin, and Mike Croussore, both of Indiana; sisters, Marietta Butcher, and Martha Croussore, both of Indiana and Margie Brown of Virginia.

She was welcomed into heaven by her parents; her brother, Omer; her sister, Iline; and baby sister, Virginia.

Georgia was raised in Marion, IN and received her education in Marion High School. She married Billy Watkins on March 20, 1987 at Arvada, CO.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She also greatly enjoyed her family gatherings, BBQ’s, and playing games. She also enjoyed quilting, flowers and gardening, dancing and was an avid baseball fan.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the Nebraska Domestic Violence Coalition or the Grand Island Crisis Center.
