Paul Griess
SUTTON - Paul "Pierre" Robert Griess, 72, of Sutton died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at Henderson Community Hospital in Henderson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, with the Rev. Dan Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until noon Friday at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.
Mr. Griess was born
Sept. 15, 1935, in Clay County to Carl and Clarice (Nuss) Griess.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Sinobia Griess; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet and Larry Driewe of Hampton, Jocelyn Hofmann of Sutton and Joleen and Brian Mowitz of St. Paul; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Sheila Griess of Sutton; a brother and sister-in-law, Evon and Naomi Griess of Sutton; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Wilmer Griess, Anna Marie and Curtis N. Griess, Leota and Silas Nuss and Gertrude and Waldine Nuss, all of Sutton.
Additional survivors include grandchildren, Clinton Griess of Kunsan AFB in South Korea, Jean Driewer of Hampton, Kevin, Michelle and Colleen Hofmann, all of Sutton, Ashley Mowitz of St. Paul, Michaela, McKenzie, Maddison and Sam Griess, all of Sutton; and a great-granddaughter, Victoria Hofmann of Sutton.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Free German Reformed Salem Church near Sutton and received his education at District 66 Country School in Clay County. He was a lifelong farmer and farmed until a stroke forced him to retire in December of 1998. While farming, he was also employed at the Sutton Livestock Auction for Richard Drudik for approximately 20 years. On May 14, 1954, he married Sinobia M. Griess in Central City. He and Sinobia were blessed to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary last May.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton. He was an avid Nebraska football fan and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Robert Hofmann.

Elmer Frerichs
LEXINGTON - Elmer R. Frerichs, 82, of Lexington died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, with the Rev. Michael Gruhn officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington with military honors.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Frerichs was born
March 9, 1925, at Culbertson to William H. and Mabel (Christensen) Frerichs.
He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Joe.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons, Richard Frerichs of Elwood and Robert Frerichs of Booker, Texas; three daughters, Katherine Rauch of Grand Island, Janice Cassels of Marietta, Okla., and Anna Marie Yeutter of Fremont; a brother, Bill Frerichs of McCook; and five sisters, Thelma Moorhouse of Culbertson, Pauline Horeck of McCook, Doris Popp of Colby, Kan., Viola Steinbeck of National City, Calif., and Emma Nelson of Yuma, Ariz.
Tony Calvo
Anthony "Tony" Calvo, 79, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Calvo was born
Aug. 5, 1928, in Newark, N.J.
He was preceded in death by a daughter.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Patty Calvo of Grand Island; a son, Joey Calvo of New Jersey; and a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Rick and Kim Zerr of Ocean Shores, Wash.
He is also survived by a stepgranddaughter, Angela Roff of Rapid City, S.D.; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Maudie Walters, Ken and Susie Perkins, and Jim and Lisa Perkins, Alberta Perkins, all of Grand Island and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by aunt Betty Jones and aunt Lena Catalano, both of New Jersey.
He was 17 when he joined the Merchant Marines in 1945 and became the youngest chief cook while there. Later he joined the Air Force and then the Navy. Tony settled for a number of years in Denver, where he met and married Patty Perkins on Oct. 29, 1964. They lived in California, Boston and New Jersey, finally settling for 15 years in McCook, where they owned and operated a supper club called "Tony & Patty's Speakeasy," and later a cab company. In 1985 they moved to Grand Island, Patty's hometown. He retired from "Prince Of The Road" due to ill health in December 2006.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Tony loved to cook and share his food and anything he had with friends and relatives. Cancer took his strength but not his heart.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers-in-law, a nephew, two nieces, five uncles and two aunts.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Thelma Brakeman
BROKEN BOW - Thelma K. Brakeman, 83, of Broken Bow died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
John Sickler
John W. Sickler, 83, of Grand Island died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Berean Bible Church in Grand Island, with the Revs. Robert Stretch and Scott Friesen officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sickler was born
Mar. 7, 1924, at Merna to Benjamin and Gladys (Prescott) Sickler.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Elaine Sickler of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and LaDonna Sickler of Grand Island; and a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Jerry Pankoke of Grand Island.
Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Kimberly, Chad, Rebekah, Natasha, Maranda and Paul; three stepgrandchildren, Sean, Dana and Seth; eight great-grandchildren, Caden, Brayton, Alexander, Ian, Machenzie, Gabriel, Xavier and Isaiah; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Abram, Kaylee, Elliot, Kenneth and Elizabeth; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Jones of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Beulah Marino and Vala Perkins.
John graduated from Broken Bow High School in May 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 31, 1943, and served in WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre on the USS Charles Ausburne. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 21, 1945. He married Elaine Brundige on April 16, 1946, at Phillipsburg, Kan. John returned to Broken Bow after his discharge and worked for Ely's Dairy until 1951. He then moved his family to Grand Island and worked at Fair Acres Dairy. In April 1953, he went to Chicago to school, graduating as a licensed massage therapist. He worked as a massage therapist until 1998, when he was forced to quit due to ill health. He also worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant a short time as a shift supervisor on Line 5 and later supervisor of the laundry department.
John was very active in the Evangelical Free Church, serving as a trustee, and in the Berean Bible Church, serving as head usher and greeter for many years. He was active in 7th grade basketball at Walnut Jr. High, his son's basketball and baseball teams, and as a coach of Little League Baseball for several years. John was involved in the Big Brothers program along with his son, Terry. He was very active in PTA and gladly helped whenever help was needed. For his years of involvement, he received the Nebraska Congress of Parents and Teachers Certificate of Honorary State Life Membership in appreciation of outstanding service to children and youth.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. John will be greatly missed by his family and the many people whose lives he touched.

Lianne Ryan
KEARNEY - Norma Lianne Ryan, 74, of Kearney died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at home.
Services will be will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Charles Peek officiating. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary.
Mrs. Ryan was born
Sept. 21, 1933, at Grand Island to Ralph and Margaret (Boelts) Farrall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ryan.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Pat and Dora Ryan and John Ryan, all of Bellevue; and two daughters and a son-in-law, Julie and Cornell Hiemke and Kathleen Ryan, all of Kearney.
Additional survivors of the immediate family include five grandsons, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
She graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1951. She married Robert Ryan in Grand Island in 1954. They lived in Lincoln, Omaha and San Francisco before settling in Kearney in 1960. She retired from Mid-Nebraska Community Services in 1999.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice.
Nancy Koehn
On Jan. 6, 1975, a very special person entered our lives.Her body left us on Oct. 15, 2007, but never her spirit.
Her name was Nancy Lynn Koehn.She was born
in Grand Island. Nancy attended Grand Island public schools, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1993.She worked for the Nebraska Credit Union and then Alltel.She then decided to go back to college.She received her degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Development from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.She then worked at Head Start, taught for one year at the Alda Public Schools, and was currently teaching 4th grade at Wood River Elementary School.
She loved teaching her students, spending time at home with her pets, and being with her family.
Nancy is survived by her parents, James and Virginia Koehn of Grand Island; a brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Jeannie Koehn of Grand Island; two nieces, Kara and Kayla Koehn; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and a friend from childhood to adulthood, Mrs. Mindy Weaver.
She was especially loved by her family and will be greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Emil Dvorak, Louise Dvorak Krejca, Harry Koehn and Hilda Koehn.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Burial will take place at a later date at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Don Kauk
SUTTON - Don David Kauk, 78, of Sutton died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Federated Church in Sutton. The Rev. Eric Biehl will officiate. Burial will be in Sutton Cemetery.
Kohler Mortuary in Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kauk was born
May 10, 1929, near Sutton to Benjamin Christian and Ella (Rauscher) Kauk.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Darlene Kauk; a daughter, Diane Lockling of Lincoln; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Darrel Kauk of Grand Island, Douglas and Delores Kauk of Harvard, Delane and Lori Kauk of Lincoln and Dennis Kauk of Clay Center; and a sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Richard Drudik of Sutton.
Additional survivors include 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
He attended District 5 rural school and Sutton High School. He then went into farming with his father. On June 30, 1949, he was united in marriage to Darlene Alberding at the Harvard Evangelical Church parsonage in Harvard. They made their home on a farm near Sutton. In 1994, they moved into Sutton.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, but loved getting together with his family on special holidays, some of which he invented himself.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Morris; a sister-in-law, Helen; and a son-in-law, Robert "Bob" Lockling.
Memorials may be given to the family.
