Nettie Carlson
Ravenna resident, 98

RAVENNA — Nettie E. Carlson, 98, of Ravenna died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ravenna with the Revs. Mark Cadenbach and Todd Swift officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon.

Memorials are suggested to the Ravenna Emergency Unit.

Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon Dec. 24, 1901, north of Shelton to Herman and Louise (Puchert) Pope.

On Jan. 25, 1928, she married LaVergne Carlson. They lived on the Carlson family farm south of Ravenna. In the early 1970s, they retired and moved to Ravenna.

She was a member of the church and was a loving, devoted mother. She enjoyed her home and garden.

Survivors include her sons, Glenn, Grass Valley, Calif., and Myron "Jack", Dixon, Ill.; daughters, Vernetta Svanda, Ravenna, and Shirley Swift, Omaha; 11 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and three sisters.

Lawrence Walker
Alma resident, 76

ALMA — Lawrence Donald Walker, 76, of Alma died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Harlan County Hospital in Alma.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Alma United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Burial, with Masonic rites by Jochin Lodge 146 A.F. and A.M. of Holdrege, will be at Alma Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma.

Memorials are suggested to the church Building Fund.

He was born icon Aug. 14, 1924, northwest of Alma to Lovell Robert and Mable Clara (Coe) Walker. He attended Midway Rural School District 76 and graduated from Orleans High School in 1942.

On Oct. 16, 1945, he married Vada Fern Anderson at Alma. They made their home in Orleans until moving to Alma in 1963. He farmed the family farm, was a crop insurance adjuster and sold crop insurance.

He was a member of the church in Alma and Jochin Lodge 146 A.F. and A. M. in Holdrege.

Survivors include his wife; son, Douglas of Alma; brothers, Oscar of Holmes Beach, Fla., and Hiram of Kearney; and sister, Ellen Kerr of Billings, Mont.

Theodore Wendland
Arapahoe resident, 88

HOLDREGE — Theodore F. "Ted" Wendland, 88, of Arapahoe died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. Carl Lilienkamp officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Arapahoe Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today at Williamson-Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church building fund or Arapahoe Rescue Unit.

He was born icon June 1, 1913, in Gosper County to Julius and Auguste (Schievelbein) Wendland. He grew up in Gosper County where he attended Immanuel Lutheran School. He worked on farms in Gosper and Hitchcock counties. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater and received a Purple Heart. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Arapahoe.

On April 7, 1946, he married Phyllis Wieland in Norton, Kan. He worked for Milt Stewart for 25 years as a brick mason. He also was custodian for Arapahoe Public Schools for 13 years.

He was a member of the church and the American Legion Post in Arapahoe.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Jerry of Denver, Billy of Paxton and Dale of Arapahoe; daughters, Darlene Wymes of Brunswick, Ga., and Wanda Pulley of Arapahoe; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Yuletta Yeutter
Lexington, 84

LEXINGTON - Yuletta Yeutter, 84, of Lexington died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Berean Bible Church in Lexington with the Rev. J.J. White officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation will from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to KJLT Christian Radio Station of North Platte or the church.

She was born icon Jan. 16, 1918, in Eustis to Charles and Emma (Hueftle) Yeutter. She grew up in Eustis where she attended one year of high school. She went to Kearney where she attended A.O. Thomas School for two years and later moved to Lexington, where she graduated in 1940.

Due to poor health, she was unable to work outside the home, but was a caregiver for her parents and cooked for threshers during harvest.

She enjoyed cooking and baking. She also enjoyed growing flowers and corresponding with family.

She was a member of the Methodist Church while growing up in Eustis and enjoyed the activities there. She was a member of the church in Lexington for more than 40 years and was the prayer club chairperson for many years.

Survivors include a brother, Clarence of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Elizabeth Smith
Ex-Lexington resident, 96

BERTRAND — Elizabeth W. Smith, 96, of Bertrand, formerly of Lexington, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Bertrand Nursing Home in Bertrand.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege with the Rev. Melva Tranmer officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Bertrand.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in her name.

She was born icon Jan. 8, 1905, in Otoe County to Louis and Emma (Haeffner) Karsten. The family moved to Bertrand where she attended elementary school and later moved to Elm Creek. She helped care for the family and also worked as a telephone operator in Elm Creek.

On Feb. 15, 1923, she married Raymond H. Smith. They lived in Oconto, Overton, Elm Creek and Darr before moving to Lexington. Her husband died in 1969. She relocated to Holdrege in 1994 and became a resident of the Bertrand Nursing Home in 1995.

She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, traveling and her flower gardens.

Survivors include her daughter, Ruthe McGraw of Sand Coulee, Mont.; sisters, Lila Rishel of Gothenburg and Fern Karsten of Portland, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, two daughters, four brothers, three sisters and a stepdaughter.

Charles Pope
Johnson Lake resident, 78

LEXINGTON — Charles F. Pope, 78, of Johnson Lake died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Lexington with the Rev. K.C. BeDunnah officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell.

O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin Wescoat
Lexington resident, 72

LEXINGTON — Alvin Lee Wescoat, 72, of Lexington died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with the Rev. Michael Gruhn officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation will be until 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to the hospital.

He was born icon Aug. 5, 1929, in Riverton to Charles and Gladys (Kugler) Wescoat.

On May 12, 1955, he married Eunice Kranau in Phillipsburg, Kan. He worked for Bill McKee Farming, Nis Jensen Farming and several area hay mills. He was a member of the church.

Survivors include his wife of Gothenburg; son, David of Alda; daughters, Vera McIntosh of Grand Island and Sherry Thaden of Lexington; sister, Ethel Farrens of Red Cloud; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Bernard Brehm
Kearney resident, 76

KEARNEY — Bernard C. Brehm, 76, of 3810 Ave. L died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Mother Hull Home in Kearney.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Stan Murdoch officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759 and American Legion Post 52.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and until service time Wednesday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the church in Kearney or Grace Lutheran Church in Franklin.
