Laveta Feis
Kearney resident, 90

KEARNEY — Laveta P. Feis, 90, of 3207 11th Ave., died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where she was a patient for 18 days.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Hastings with Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation will be Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Brand Wilson Mortuary in Hastings.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Pooh Corner.

She was born icon Jan. 13, 1910 in Campbell to Clem and Elizabeth (Rosch) Cory.

She married Gordon Feis July 16, 1929. He died Feb. 10, 1974.

She graduated from Campbell High School. She and her husband lived in Franklin 25 years, where she worked for J.C. Penney and Tilford's Department Store. They moved to Hastings in 1963 and she worked as a psych technician at Hastings Regional Center, retiring in January 1975. After retiring she worked as a foster grandmother for 22 years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hastings and the Friendly Dozen Club in Franklin, and was a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge of Franklin.

Survivors include daughter, Gwen Sterner, Kearney; sons Gillys, Rocklin, Calif., and Gillford, Hastings; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and three sisters.

Jack Day
Miller resident, 76

KEARNEY — Jack D. Day, 76, of Miller died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grandview Church in rural Miller with the Revs. Dean Pofahl and J.H. Schroeder officiating. Burial, with military honors by American Legion Post 351 of Miller, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759 of Kearney and the Kearney National Guard unit, will be at Armada Cemetery in Miller.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Armada Cemetery Association.

He was born icon Dec. 6, 1923, northeast of Miller to Harold R. and Mabel L. (Keyser) Day. He graduated from Miller High School in 1942. He served with the First Cavalry Division in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947.

On June 5, 1949, he married Ruth M. Jorgensen in rural Miller.

He was a member of Legion Post 351, VFW Post 759 and the Miller Volunteer Fire Department. He was president of Miller Rodeo Association and coached youth baseball for many years in Miller.

Survivors include his wife; sons, George, Amherst, Schuyler, Plattsmouth, John, Omaha, Dick, Callaway, Charles, Miller, and Ned, Kearney; brother, Norman, Miller; sisters, Jeanne Stevens and Sarah Graham, both of Miller, Shirley McCullough, Broken Bow, and Susan Underhill, Riverdale; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Linda Cook
Kearney resident, 52

KEARNEY — Linda L. Cook, 52, of 312 W. 29th St., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Parkplace Healthcare Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Evangelical Free Church in Kearney with the Rev. Greg Gangwish officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and prior to services Thursday afternoon at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Helen Nelson
Ex-Loomis resident, 99

HOLDREGE — Helen Leavina Nelson, 99, of Holdrege, formerly of Loomis and rural Bertrand, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Christian Homes in Holdrege.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Westmark Evangelical Free Church in Phelps County with the Rev. David Carlson officiating. Burial will be at Sandstrom Cemetery in Phelps County.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

A memorial has been established in her name.

She was born icon on Nov. 29, 1900, in Bertrand to John H. and Mamie A. (Lindsten) Nelson. She attended District 21 Star School and graduated from Bertrand High School in 1918. She then attended the Minnehaha Business School in Minneapolis and Kearney State Teachers College. She taught at Districts 21 and 75 schools in Phelps County for four years.

On Oct. 21, 1925, she married Fred Nelson in Bertrand. They lived northeast of Bertrand for 52 years before moving to Loomis in 1977. In 1988, she moved to Chrisoma Villa. In 1997, she moved to Christian Homes.

She was a member of the church, where she served in the Free Church Women's Ministries, taught Sunday school and was a choir member. She was a charter member of the neighborhood Advance Extension Club in Phelps County.

Survivors include her sons, LeRoy of Atlantic, Iowa, Howard and Raymond, both of Bertrand, and Willard of Overland Park, Kan.; daughter, Helen Carlson of Eaton, Colo.; brother, Holland of Bertrand; 11 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and a great-granddaughter.

Marvin Burton
Ex-Kearney resident, 72

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Marvin Edward Burton, 72, of Fernandina Beach, formerly of Kearney, Neb., died Oct. 2, 2000, in Florida.

Services were at the First Presbyterian Church in Florida with the Rev. Conrad Sharps officiating.

He was born icon Aug. 5, 1928, in Kearney and grew up in the area. He served with the U.S. Navy and then worked at Container Corp. in Florida for 37 years before retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the church and served as deacon, choir member and adult school teacher. He enjoyed working on projects around the church and for Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors include his wife, L. Barbara; sons, Robert of St. Augustine, Steve of Hazelhurst, Ga., and Rusty of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter, Judy Owens of Jacksonville; brother, Art of Washington, Utah; and five granddaughters.

Wilbur Kuhl
Loup City resident, 80

LOUP CITY — Wilbur Kuhl, 80, of Loup City died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loup City with the Rev. Shawn Kitzing officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery with military honors by Loup City American Legion Post 48.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Zelda Giddings
Kearney resident, 81

KEARNEY — Zelda L. Giddings, 81, of Kearney died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Mother Hull Home in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney with the Rev. North P. Sherrill Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

She was born icon Nov. 20, 1919, at Amherst to Arnold and Linda (Wuehler) Ray. She grew up and attended school north of Amherst.

On Dec. 21, 1941, she married Clifford J. Giddings at Kearney. They made their home in Gibbon. Her husband died in 1958 and she moved to Kearney in the early 1960s. She worked as a beautician for Alice Harvey, at the Hilltop Lanes Bowling Alley and at the Dodge-In Cafe. She retired from Baldwin Manufacturing in 1990 and worked part-time at Horizon Middle School cafeteria and cared for her grandchildren.

She was a member of the church and bowled for more than 50 years with the Kearney Women's Bowling Association. She participated in the Women's State Bowling Tournament for 52 years. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her son, Larry of Kearney; daughter, Linda of Kearney; sisters, Erma Shriner of Kearney, Jurethia "Jerry" Waage of Fremont, and Lois Bliss of Greeley, Colo.; three grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son.

Willis Lemburg
Cairo resident, 72

GRAND ISLAND — Wilma L. Lemburg, 73, of Cairo died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at St. Francis Skilled Care. Her husband, Willis A. Lemburg, 72, of Cairo died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services for the couple will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo with the Rev. Glen Keylon officiating. Burial will be at the Cameron Cemetery. Military honors graveside for Mr. Lemburg will be conducted by a unit from Fort Riley, Kan.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church in Cairo.

Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lemburg was born icon Nov. 13, 1928, in Hazard to Henry and Minnie (Brewer) Smith. She graduated from Hazard High School in 1949. She attended medical school in Omaha.

Mr. Lemburg was born icon Sept. 14, 1929, near Dannebrog to Gustav and Dora (Becker) Lemburg. He grew up in Dannebrog and attended school at District 16 country school until 1942 when the family moved to Grand Island. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1949 and was a World War II veteran.

On Feb. 18, 1951, the couple were married in Ravenna. They lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., for a short time and then returned to Nebraska. She was employed by Omaha Cold Storage in Ravenna and the Gibbon Turkey Plant. They moved to Cairo where they ran the bowling alley, Cairo Bowl, for many years. She also candled eggs.

He worked for the sugar beet factory and was then employed with Supersweet Feeds for more than 32 years.

They were members of the church in Cairo. They also were members of the Eagles Club.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the NRA.

She enjoyed bingo, reading, sewing and bowling. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and in his youth, swimming.

Survivors include their son, Brent of Giltner; daughters, Delphine Ciemnoczolowski and Doreen Lemburg, both of Kearney, and Sharon Lindell of Cairo; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a brother, Lyle Smith of Hazard; and sisters, Shirley Palasek of Fullerton and Arlone Breiner of Grand Island.

He is survived by brothers, Mervin of Mesa, Ariz., and Lowen of Lincoln; and sisters, Elaine Grim of Dannebrog and Lois Drake of New Johnsonville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
