Claude Tacha
Norton, Kan. resident, 77
NORTON, Kan. — Claude Anthony Tacha, 77, of Norton, Kan., died Friday, May 5, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton with the Rev. John Walsh officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. today with wake service at 7 p.m. at Enfield Funeral Home in Norton.
Memorials are suggested to the Norton County Senior Citizen Center of the church.
He was born
Jan. 12, 1923, near Jennings to Carl and Mary Elizabeth (Stramp) Tacha. He graduated from Jennings High School in 1942 and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in India from 1943 until 1945.
On Nov. 27, 1950, he married Barbara Wetter in Norton where they made their home. He was employed by the Scheetz Motor Co. for 42 years and also tended bar part time at the Silvaire and Eagles clubs in Norton for many years.
He was a member of the Norton Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years and a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Patrick, Topeka, Lynn, Gibbon, Neb., Jim, Kearney, and John, Norton; daughters, Mary Jo Montgomery and Sharon Poage, both of Norton, Anita Adams, Lakewood, Colo., and Marcia, Topeka; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and one brother.
Robert Schaffer
Kearney resident, 50
KEARNEY — Robert J. "Bob" Schaffer, 50, of 2814 Ave. L, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with the Rev. Charles Torpey officiating. Burial, with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759 and Kearney National Guard Unit, will be at Kearney Cemetery.
Wake service will be at 7 p.m. today at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

He was born
Dec. 3, 1949, in Wichita, Kan., to Reinhold and Regina (Depperschmidt) Schaffer. He graduated from East High School in Wichita in 1968. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
On Oct. 7, 1972, he married Carol J. Wood in South Dakota. Following his discharge, they moved to Kearney where he was employed by Rockwell Manufacturing for nine years. For the past 18 years, he had been employed as a custodian at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
He was a member of the church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife; mother, Wichita, Kan.; and brothers, Richard and Ralph, both of Derby, Kan., and Roy, Wichita.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Robert Jochem
Ex-Poole resident, 80
BELGRADE, Mont. — Robert N. Jochem, 80 of Belgrade, formerly of the Poole, Neb., area, died May 28, 2000, at Mountain View Care Center in Belgrade.
Services were June 1 at Valley of Flowers Catholic Church in Belgrade with burial at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman.
He was born
March 6, 1920, on a farm near Poole, to Karl and Frieda (Reese) Jochem. He served in the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1945.
On April 29, 1943, he married Frances Buell. They lived in Billings until moving to Belgrade in December 1999.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Mary Ann Jacobson, Missoula, and Teresa Riggs, Belgrade; sons, Robert, Lanier, Calif., and Dan, Bozeman; sisters, Beulah Davis, Leavenworth, Kan., Bernice Peterson, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Rosella Lammers, Kearney, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Thelma McCreary
Ex-Gibbon resident, 87
GIBBON — Thelma Hagge McCreary, 87, of Minden, formerly of Gibbon and Columbus, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Shelton with the Rev. Timothy Parker officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery at Gibbon.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
She was born
Nov. 16, 1912, in Butler to Weaver and Ethel (Long) Lunger. She graduated from Gibbon High School in 1932 and attended Kearney State College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
On May 6, 1935, she married Arnold Hagge in Clay Center. They lived in Gibbon until his death in 1978.
On Sept. 8, 1979, she married Harold McCreary, and they resided in Kearney until his death. She moved to Columbus where she lived until moving to Bethany Home in Minden earlier this year.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus and a 60-year member of Alpha Xi Delta National Sorority, Lincoln Chapter.
Survivors include her son, Terry Hagge, Gibbon; daughters, Janice Anderson, Columbus, Linda Lucas, Loveland, Colo., and Cheryl Triplett, Plover, Wis.; stepson, John, Forestdale, Mass.; stepdaughter, Jayanne Ritter, Lake Zurich, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, one brother and three grandchildren.
Archie Fairbrother
Kearney resident, 77
KEARNEY — Archie L. Fairbrother, 77, of 1011 Sixth Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Capital City Christian Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Bill Thornton officiating. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 today at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Lincoln.
Memorials will be established in his name.
He was born
June 24, 1923, in Oconto Falls, Wis., to Charles and Lucille (Ferguson) Fairbrother. He farmed with his father in northeastern Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1941 on a basketball scholarship. He transferred to Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1944 and graduated from Lincoln Bible Institute in Lincoln, Ill., in 1950.
On March 26, 1948, he married Marguerite Bare in Oswatamie, Kan.
In 1951, he began missionary work in Shillong, Assam, India, with his family. They returned to the U.S. in 1968, and he served as dean of men and taught at Dakota Bible College in Huron, S.D. In 1972, he became senior minister at Douglas Street Christian Church in Lincoln. Beginning in 1976, he served as manager for the McKinley Indian Mission in Toppenish, Wash. for five years.
The family went to Hong Kong in 1981, where he served as a missionary. In 1984, he served as pastor of the Church of Christ in Waverly and then spent six years as director of the Boise (Idaho) Christian Retirement Home. Although he semiretired in 1993, he took a mission trip to Africa in 1994 and was pastor at the Douglas Street Church in Lincoln in 1995. He retired in Kearney in July 1999.
Survivors include his sons, Charles of Santa Clara, Calif., and Ken of Kearney; daughters, Jewel Martinez of Gibbon, Ellen Banta of Caldwell, Idaho, Jean Mortimer of Morrow, Ga., and Zana Durst of St. Louis; sister, Claire Freburg of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter and two sisters.
Leo Methe
Kearney resident, 83
KEARNEY — Leo Methe, 83, of 407 E. 31st St. died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with the Revs. Charles Torpey and Tim Stoner officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church with the family receiving friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Vigil will be at 5 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the family.

He was born
Oct. 23, 1917, at Farnam to Joseph and Eva (Clonatre) Methe. He grew up in Hastings and attended St. Cecilia's Parochial School.
On April 8, 1942, he married Salamae "Sally" Danczak in Omaha. They farmed south of Gibbon for 25 years and moved to Kearney in 1965. He was employed at Good Samaritan Hospital until retiring.
He was a member of the church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; son, James of Omaha; daughters, Dianne Kraus of Wood River and Marilyn Beckman of Lincoln; brothers, Eugene of Kearney, Jerome and Louis, both of Omaha, Albert of Venice, Fla., and Joseph of Wichita, Kan.; sisters, Loretta of Loup City and Agnes Ripp of Omaha; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Alex Schukei
Rural Minden infant
KEARNEY — Alex Schukei, stillborn baby of Matt and Dianna Schukei of rural Minden, died at birth Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Pleasanton Cemetery with the Rev. Karla Sheffy of Pleasanton United Methodist Church officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Survivors include parents; brother, Chance at home; grandparents, Danny and Darlene Dale of Pleasanton and Gayle and Mark Schukei of Eagle; great-grandparents, Bob and Willavee Unick of Pleasanton and Herb and Joyce Dornhoff of Heartwell; and great-great-grandmother, Bertha Unick of Pleasanton.
He was preceded in death by a grandmother.
Laverne Goodell
Kearney resident, 78
KEARNEY — Laverne Clyde Goodell, 78, of 1517 E. 44th St. died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Kearney with the Rev. Dr. Ron Roemmich officiating.
Family will be receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney.

He was born
Dec. 8, 1922, at Waterbury to John Clyde and Bertha (Fegley) Goodell. He attended school in Waterbury and then did mechanical work in the Ponca area.
On Sept. 29, 1946, he married Arleen Roberts at Allen. They lived in Ponca prior to moving to Kearney in 1956. In 1959, he started a backhoe and trenching business.
He was a member of the church, assisted with Sunday school, congregational coffees and men's breakfasts. He enjoyed assisting his sons with Boy Scout projects and giving his grandchildren tractor rides. He also enjoyed camping, playing games and socializing with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Dick of Odessa, Lynn of Kearney and Kevin of San Francisco; brother Verle of Yucca Calley, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son and one sister.
