Rheta O'Sullivan
Ex-Beaver City resident, 85
TULSA, Okla. — Rheta I. O'Sullivan, 85, of Tulsa, formerly of Beaver City, Neb., died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Tulsa.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with the Rev. Tom Brouillette officiating.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Wenburg Funeral Home in Beaver City.
She was born
June 11, 1915, in Ashland, Neb., to William and Ida (Smith) Morton. She graduated from Lincoln (Neb.) High School in 1932 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1936 with a degree in education.
On July 1, 1937, she married John "Jack" O'Sullivan. She was employed as Furnas County school superintendent from 1948 to 1952. The couple moved to Arizona in the mid-1950s. She was an educator. She received her master's degree in education in the 1960s from the University of Arizona. Her husband died on Oct. 27, 1988.
She was a member of the Beaver City American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Catholic Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters.
Melvin Swanson
Hastings resident, 93
HASTINGS — Melvin Burdette Swanson, 93, of Hastings died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.
Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until noon Friday at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour before services Friday at the church.
He was born
March 25, 1908, in Ong to Henry G. and Mary (Nelson) Swanson. He graduated from Ong High School in 1926 and farmed in the Ong/Edgar area for 12 years. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On May 26, 1946, he married Seatta (Hornbacher) Wenz in Sutton. They lived in Davenport, where he worked for Davenport Implement Co . In 1955, they moved to Hastings, where he was employed by Fred Spady Motors and later for Big G General Supply until retiring in 1974.
He was an active member of the church, and a past member of the Chorus of the Plains, U.C.T., AARP and the American Legion. He played drums for 16 years for the Golden Age Entertainers Band of Good Samaritan Village.
Survivors include his wife; brothers, Chester of Edgar, Reuben of Oakland and Alvin of Denver; sister, Lorene Hope of Grandview, Mo.; stepdaughter Carol Wall of Kearney; and two stepgrandsons.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Mary Ann Owens
Ord resident, 69
ORD — Mary Ann Owens, 69, of Ord died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban presiding. Burial will be at Arcadia City Cemetery in Arcadia.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
She was born
April 5, 1932, at Loup City to Anton and Sophia (Rewonlinski) Lewandowski. She graduated from Loup City High School in 1950.
On Sept. 29, 1951, she married Raymond "Bud" Owens at Loup City. They farmed near Arcadia until moving to Arcadia in 1962. She became a resident of Valley County Nursing Home in Ord in 1985.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and altar society in Arcadia and the church in Loup City. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Arcadia. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, polka music and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of Arcadia; sons, Richard "Dick" of Albion, Myron "Mike" of Lincoln, Mark of Hastings, Dwain of Columbus and Shawn of Arcadia; daughters, Paula Johnson of Arcadia, Janelle Masters and Patricia "Patti" Buttell, both of Hastings, Julie Gydesen of Ord and Mary Young of Columbus; brothers, Fred Lewandowski of Ansley and Dale Lewandowski of Loup City; sisters, Donette Holcomb of Arcadia, Marge Larimer of Billings, Mont., and Harriet Polski and Esther Kaminski, both of Omaha; 24 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, one brother and two sisters.
Linda Spellman
Shelton resident, 60
KEARNEY — Linda M. Spellman, 60, of Shelton, formerly of Kearney, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton with the Revs. Paul Collins and Thomas Mullowney officiating. Burial will be at Shelton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church with a vigil and rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the church building fund and the American Cancer Society.
She was born
Oct. 7, 1941, in Auburn to Archie and Opal (Adams) Keup. She graduated from Gibbon High School.
On Sept. 12, 1959, she married Gary Spellman in Shelton. They lived in Cozad for 25 years, and she worked for Mead Lumber. They moved to Kearney and lived there for nine years where she worked for Wal-Mart, Kmart and the Head Start program. They had lived in the Shelton area for seven years. She was a "grandma" for the second grade class at Shelton schools. She had been disabled for two years.
She was a member of the church and the altar society.
Survivors include her husband; son, Scott of Lees Summit, Mo.; daughter, Kristy Kennedy of Shelton; brothers, Rodney Keup of Richmond, Ill., Eldon Keup of Puyallup, Wash. and Allan Keup of Kearney; sisters, Marylin Broekemeier of Gibbon, Judy Rose of Arnold, Mo., Nita Krueger of Ansley, Sue Hawke of Broken Bow, Gail Keup of Gibbon and Kathy Murr of Kenesaw; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Hazel L. Boyles
KEARNEY - Hazel L. Boyles, 79, of 1315 W. 21st St. died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Homestead Retirement Center in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. North Sherrill, Jr. officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at the Ansley Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary or before service time Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
She was born
May 27, 1923, in Miller, S.D., to Edley and Ella (Bowman) Kegley. She graduated from Kearney High School in 1941.
On Jan. 24, 1942, she married Jesse Boyles in Kearney. They farmed north of Kearney and later moved to Litchfield where they farmed.
They moved to Kearney in 1953 and she worked at the Nebraska State Tuberculosis Hospital and later at St. John's Good Samaritan Center until she retired. He died Feb. 14, 1969.
She was a Tupperware distributor in Kearney for several years.
Survivors include her sons, Rick of Castle Rock, Colo., and Clifford of Phoenix; brother, Merle Kegley of Kearney; sisters, Orpha Boody of Lakewood, Colo., Karen Axtell of Axtell, Janet Rasmussen of Pleasanton and Joyce Hadwiger of Kearney; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Margaret Alkire
Kearney, 87
KEARNEY - Margaret F. Alkire, 87, of 600 E. 23rd St. died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Burial will be at Overton Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before services Friday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in Kearney.
She was born
June 15, 1915, in Overton to Jesse and Mary (Overturf) Alkire. She attended school in Overton.
She moved to Kearney more than 55 years ago. She was employed as a sales clerk at Baumgartner Department Store in Kearney until she retired.
She was a member of the church, American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Hospitality Center.
Survivors include nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.
Albert Einspahr
Kearney, 75
KEARNEY - Albert G. Einspahr, 75, of 1919 Fifth Ave. died at his home in Kearney.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
There will be no visitation.
O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
