Marjorie Miller
Broken Bow resident, 71

LINCOLN - Marjorie Miller, 71, of Broken Bow died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at BryanLGH Medical Center-East in Lincoln.
Services were today at Iverson Memorial Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Henry Duerksen officiating. Burial was at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow Rescue Unit or Trinity Broadcasting Network.
She was born icon April 15, 1931, in Larto, La., to Virgin and Bessie Wiley.
In 1954, she married John Miller.
She sold life, accident and health insurance for several years until she stopped in 1988.
She enjoyed cooking, decorating and painting, especially mountain scenes.
Survivors include her husband; son, John II of North Platte; daughters, Sharron of Broken Bow and Linda of Lancaster, Calif.; brothers, Charles and Martin Wiley, both of Walton Beach, Fla.; and sister, Wilma Jones of Ft. Walton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter.

Annie E. Vian

KEARNEY - Annie E. Vian, 86, of Kearney died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling and the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.

Rebekah ritual services will be conducted at the church by Naomi Rebekah Lodge 12.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and until service time Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the hospital Hospice program.

She was born icon Oct. 19, 1915, in Dewitt, Mo., to Fred and Geneve (Ritchie) Easley. She graduated from Merna High School.

On May 14, 1940, she married Ray Vian. They farmed in the Litchfield area until moving to Kearney in 1962.

She was employed in the accounting department at the Youth Development Center until she retired in 1980.

Her husband died June 10, 1994.

She was a member of the church, was active in S.P.I.C.E., Circle One of the United Methodist Women, Open Circle Sunday school, Sociable Seniors and Naomi Rebekah Lodge 12.

She enjoyed bowling on the Senior Bowling League and worked as a volunteer for the Good Samaritan Hospice program.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her sons, Wayne of Grand Island and Loren of Centralia, Wash.; sisters, Katie Brozorich of Kittitas, Wash., and Janie Stingley of Yakima, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and a half brother.

Josie Shuman
Lincoln resident, 54

LINCOLN - Josie A. Shuman, 54, of Lincoln died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with the Revs. Charles Torpey and Doug Shada officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.

Wake services will be at 7 p.m. today at the church. The casket will be closed.

Additional memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Berean Church in Lincoln.

Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon March 19, 1949, in Kearney to Antonio and Edith (Rivera) DeLaTorre.

She graduated from Kearney High School in 1967. She attended Kearney State College.

She lived in Parsons, Kan., and worked at Labette County Hospital.

She moved to Lincoln in 1998 and was the office manager of Transfiguration of Lincoln.

On Sept. 8, 2000, she married Howard Shuman in Molokai, Hawaii.

Survivors include her husband; son, Colby Christensen of Lawrence, Kan.; daughter, Kristina Perez of Lincoln; her father; brothers, Anthony DeLaTorre of Cheyenne, Wyo., Daniel DeLaTorre of Kearney and Carlos DeLaTorre of Jeffersonton, Va.; sisters, Theresa Salazar of Omaha, Esther Maes of Aurora, Colo., and Yolanda Herron of Lincoln; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Dave Snyder
Broken Bow resident, 61

BROKEN BOW - Charles David "Dave" Snyder, 61, of Broken Bow died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Harry Kurtenback officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Broken Bow.

Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.

He was born icon March 25, 1943, in Callaway to Charles and Helen (Wilcox) Snyder.

On Aug. 13, 1966, he married Mary Kalinowski in Oconto.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Matt of Steamwood, Ill., and Tony of Broken Bow; daughters, Becky Burke of Sutherland, Libby of St. Paul and Sara Myers of Broken Bow; and sister, Connie Burr of Gibbon.

Additional survivors include his sons-in-law, Shawn Burke of Sutherland and Dustin Myers of Broken Bow; brother-in-law, Richard Burr of Gibbon; and grandchildren, Shelbi, Josie and Morgan Burke and Joel Myers.

He attended school at Oconto and graduated from Oconto High School in 1961.

During high school, he scored 1,665 points in basketball, which still stands in the top 100 in Nebraska, according to the Nebraska School Activities Association.

After high school, he attended Kearney State College and played football and baseball. At college, he had the lowest earned run average in the history of Kearney State Baseball to that date.

In 1963, he was the punter for a football team that went undefeated in the regular season and had its first-ever NAIA playoff appearance. He graduated from college in 1965.

He started teaching school in Stapleton. He taught for 11 years. In 1974, his track team won the Class D state track title.

He also worked for Shelter Insurance part-time while living in Stapleton.

He was a loving and understanding dad, and as the four grandchildren arrived, he found a new level of caring and giving. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. His personality shone through in his sense of humor, his practical joking and his dedicated and compassionate nature.

In summer 1975, he moved with his family to Broken Bow where he established a successful Shelter Insurance Agency. He had 31 years of opportunities as a top representative and received numerous awards. Through the years, he met many people who became clients and well as friends. For some, he was recognized as a mentor.

In 1991, he received a kidney transplant, thanks to his sister, Connie. As a result to this gift of life, a profound bond was built between them. This connection of life and love overflowed to his wife and children.

Through the years, he was a member of the Broken Bow Optimist Club, Broken Bow Elks Lodge, Broken Bow Country Club Board of Directors, State Seniors Golf Board of Directors, broken Bow Boosters, Broken Bow Parks and Recreation Board, Custer County Car Club, Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Eucharistic minister and a member of church-related boards. He was a sports enthusiast from golf to NASCAR.

Although recently his illness was devastating, he fought a good fight as his body failed him. His courage, strength and bravery are an inspiration to his children, family and friends.Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation or the Broken Bow Booster Club.

Lyle Wilkens
Gibbon resident, 89

WOOD RIVER - Lyle Edward Wilkens, 89, of Gibbon died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith United Church in Gibbon with the Rev. Jerry Heydenberk officiating. Burial will be at Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon Oct. 29, 1914, in St. Michael to Herman and Hazel (Schultz) Wilkens.

On June 5, 1940, he married Gladys Nelson in Grand Island. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sons, Jim of Gibbon and John of Fort Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Gifforn Swenson
Bertrand resident, 89

HOLDREGE — Gifford Swenson, 89, of Bertrand died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.

Arrangements are pending with Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand.

Hazel Shay
North Platte resident, 90

NORTH PLATTE - Hazel Mae Shay, 90, of North Platte, formerly of Oxford, died Jan. 27, 2002, at Linden Court in North Platte.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oxford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Theta Dame officiating.
Adams and Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte is in charge of arrangements.
She was born icon Sept. 17, 1911, in Furnas County to George and Vesta (Ziebel) Quinn. She attended country school and graduated from Oxford High School in 1930.
On June 5, 1935, she married Edward Shay in Beaver City. They lived in Oxford, Central City, Grant and Big Springs before returning to Oxford in 1983.
She was a member of the church and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge. She served several years as a 4-H club leader and was a member of an extension club in Oxford.
She enjoyed gardening, reading and crocheting.
Survivors include her daughter, Vesta Oerter of North Platte; brother, George Quinn of Oxford; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Frances Williams
Ex-Kearney, 90

CALLAWAY - Frances E. Williams, 90, of Callaway, formerly of Kearney, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Callaway Good Samaritan Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Callaway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Schwarz officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Callaway Good Samaritan Care Center Memory Unit and Garden or to the donor's choice.

Evelyn Swanson
Kearney resident, 86

KEARNEY - Evelyn M. Swanson, 86, of Kearney died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Wel-Life Center in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. North Sherrill officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and until service time Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
