Marilyn K. "Mem" McConnell

78, Lincoln, died Wednesday (10-27-10). She was born icon on May 26, 1932 to Hugh and Faye (Wheeler) Knight in Carroll, Iowa. Mem grew up in Elk Horn, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Prairie City, Iowa. She attended Iowa State University and graduated from the UNMC School of Nursing in 1954. She worked as both a surgical and office nurse in Lincoln. Marilyn and her husband traveled extensively to such destinations as Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, France, Central America, New Zealand, Australia, and the Soviet Union. Numerous trips to the Caribbean enhanced her enjoyment of swimming, sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Mem became a skilled potter and for many years enjoyed the camaraderie of other artists at the Burkholder Project in the Haymarket. She enjoyed the fine arts and nurtured an extensive collection of art and house plants.

Ruth J. Blecha

82, Lincoln, died Saturday (10/23/10). Born Leigh, NE (2/17/28) to Robert Henry and Marian Hazel (Whinnery) Stevens. Retired Library Aide at Auburn High School and Auburn City Library. Member of Good Shepard Presbyterian Church; Brownville Chapter, Order of Eastern Star; PEO, Chapter EE; attended Wayne State Teachers College, avid reader and quilter.

William Francis Duke

95, Lincoln, died Sunday, October 24, 2010. The son of Ira and Mattie (Cogdill) Duke was born icon September 16, 1915 on a farm northeast of Sutherland, Iowa. First came to Lincoln in 1955 leaving in 1965 and returning in 1967 residing in Lincoln ever since. He attended a number of schools in northeast Iowa and California graduating from high school in Peterson, Iowa. He attended the University of Maryland briefly. He entered the military in 1941 and in 1942 was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Army of the United States. In 1947 he was appointed First Lieutenant, Air Corps, Regular Army. He graduated from Air Staff and Command School and Associate Course Air War College. Stationed at Lincoln Air Force Base from 1958 to 1965. Last assignment at Base was Executive Officer 818th Air Division. His 25 year military career included service during three armed conflicts; World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1966 as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retirement he was employed by the State of Nebraska as Deputy Director of the State Department of Personnel retiring from that position in 1977. He is a member of the American Legion Post #3, Lincoln, NE and a life member of The Retired Officers Association. In 1942 he was united in marriage with Ruth Lillian Jensen in Greenville, South Carolina. They are the parents of one son Terry William.

Service: Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Thursday (10-28-10) Roper and Sons Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ Street.

Family Gathering: Family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday

Cemetery: Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday (10-29-10) Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland, IA with full military honors.

Memorials: Memorials in lieu of flowers to donor’s favorite charity.

Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law Terry and Wendy of Seattle, WA, two grandsons Nicholas and Matthew, nephew Howard and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth in 1977 and his parents.

Ruth Florence Dyke

95 years of age, of Lincoln, Nebraska passed away on Friday, October 29, 2010. Ruth was born icon on October 11, 1915 on the family farm near Axtell, the oldest of three children of Carl Victor and Hulda Christine (Hagge) Larson. She was baptized in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell. Ruth spoke only Swedish upon entering grade school yet she persevered and received her education from Axtell Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression. In spite of the hard times she was able to carpool with five other recent graduates and drive to the State College in Kearney for classes. However, after one year, even that became too expensive and she had to stay home and watch the dust and thistles blow across the farm country. In 1935 Ruth returned to school working as a receptionist-secretary in the dean of women’s offices, and was able to graduate in August of 1938 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a business major. She was hired to teach typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping at Sergeant, in the sandhills, for $80.00 a month. She truly lived her mother’s American dream. Ruth was united in marriage with Robert Dyke of Sidney who was a fellow teacher in Sergeant. They married July 30, 1939. As a married woman in the depression, Ruth was not able to teach. Ruth and Bob were blessed with two children: David and Katherine. They worked in education, living in Harvard, Culbertson, Lexington and Lincoln. Later Ruth returned to education for twenty years of teaching junior high students in English and journalism from which she retired in1980. Ruth and Bob were devoted to each other for nearly 65 years of marriage. Her husband preceded her in death in 2004. Ruth was a member of the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln. She was a member of PEO and a member of LARTA. She loved playing bridge, cooking, reading, and traveling. Ruth and Bob lived a happy fifteen years at Eastmont Towers Retirement Center where they were active in many activities and committees. Most important to Ruth were her family. Ruth will be remembered for her caring considerate manner, her gentle spirit, and her warm smile and laughter.

Ruth leaves to mourn her passing: son, Dr. David Dyke and his wife Elaine of Lincoln; daughter, Katherine Beebe and her husband Jim, of Rockwall, Texas; four grandchildren: Dr. Christopher Dyke and his wife Ankie of Anchorage, Alaska; Jennifer Gourdie and her husband Brennan of Seattle, Washington; Tony Beebe and his wife Joyce of Houston, Texas; Melissa Kemp and her husband Kevin of Royce City, Texas; four great grandchildren: Clay and Cole Kemp and Amelie and Dawson Dyke.

She was preceded in death also by brothers Roy and Burthron Larson, and her sister-in-law, Ruth Larson.

William L. "Bill" Yost

82, Lincoln, died Thursday, October 28, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born icon to Loverne B. and Zella (Van Gilder) Yost in Brunswick, NE. He grew up in Coleridge, NE and after graduating high school, attended UNL where he graduated with a degree in journalism. After UNL he went to Stuart, NE, Bicknell, IN, and then Madison, NE serving as newspaper editor. He met his wife, Jean (Meisinger), and they were married on October 10, 1954. After Madison, Bill served as newspaper editor in Aurora, NE, and Broomfield, CO. He then began his career in the printing business, working at printing companies in Boulder, CO, North Platte, NE, and he retired from Christensen Printing Company in Lincoln, NE.

Visitation: 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Roper and Sons, 4300 'O' Street, Lincoln, Nebraska

Service: Celebration of Life: 11:30 a.m. Monday, November 1, 2010, Christ Lutheran Church, 4325 Sumner St., Lincoln, NE. Pastor Luke Schnake officiating.

Family Gathering: Family will greet friends from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

He is survived by; son and daughter-in-law: Todd and Shonna Yost, and grandsons: Joshua and Christopher of David City; daughter: Michelle Yost and granddaughter Aubrey Yost of Lincoln; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife, O. Jean Yost and parents.

Jane E. Davidson

90, widow of John F. "Doc" Davidson, died Saturday (10/30/10), at the Country House Residences, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was born icon March 3, 1920, in Rossland, BC, Canada, to Alexander and Helen Mary (Lewis) Cox. Jane earned a business degree at the University of British Columbia/Vancouver, and a master's degree at the University of California/Berkeley. It was at Berkeley's International House that she was courted by her future husband, John, a Canadian botanist. The couple moved to Lincoln in 1948, when John accepted a position at the University of Nebraska, and Jane took on the role of homemaker extraordinaire. In that capacity, Jane served as chief cook, bottle-washer, banker, chauffeur, gardener, and housekeeper to John and their growing family of eight children. Selfless and giving, Jane supported her children and grandchildren through her presence and her involvement in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Faculty Wives, Little League, PTA, and, most especially, her church. She was a loyal and active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, especially its outreach committee, with rummage sales, bazaars and collections for the Food Pantry at St. Mark's on the Campus. At age 90, she would say that her life had indeed been blessed: Although she resisted taking personal credit, Jane was immeasurably proud of her eight children and their children, who, in turn, marvel and give thanks for the blessing that was their mother and Grannie.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, (11/5/10), Church of the Holy Trinity, 6001 A Street, Lincoln, Fr. Sam Boman officiating.

Memorials: Memorials are suggested to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church or to the charity of your choice. The family invites friends to bring a non-perishable item for the Food Pantry to the service; Jane would approve.

Jane’s survivors include her children, Janet Davidson, Lincoln; Liz/Betty Davidson (Clark Hodder), Bellevue, WA; Doug (Mary/“Beth”) Davidson, Hemet, CA and Lincoln; Bob (Debbie) Davidson, Kirkland, WA; Pamela (Tim) Deffer, Springfield, MO; Mary Fuller, Lincoln; and Jim (Julia) Davidson, Hillsborough, CA; daughter-in-law Carolyn Davidson (Ft. Worth, TX); twenty-three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her sister Mary Ripley, New Milton, England. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Edmund; her husband, John; and her son, John "Ed" Davidson.

Al "Moe" Moeller

88, Lincoln, died Wednesday (11-3-10). Born (6-6-22) in Clarkson, Nebraska to Otto and Alice (Rosenberry) Moeller. WWII U. S. Army Veteran. Ret. Sound Engineer for Muzak KFAB. Member: Grace Lutheran Church, Walton; American Legion, Softball Hall of Fame Inductee.
