Florence McKenzie

Florence O. McKenzie, 94, of Wedgewood Care Center died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at Wedgewood.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Sunday school department at the church.

Mrs. McKenzie was born icon June 19, 1905, in Grand Island to Jonas and Mathilda (Gosda) Kleinkauf. She grew up in Grand Island, and received her education here. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1925.

After graduating she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone for a brief time.

She married Anmgus McKenzie on June 17, 1931, in Grand Island. The couple lived their entire lives in Grand Island.

Mrs. McKenzie was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for more than 40 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Beverly (Mrs. Curt) Chalquist of El Cajon, Calif.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Lora Findley of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, Edwin, Richard, Rudolph, George and Elmer and three sisters, Ella, Alma and Frieda.

Albert Quandt

Albert C. Quandt, 63, 3620 Summer Drive, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church. A prayer service will be at 1:15 p.m. The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Trinity Lutheran School.

Mr. Quandt was born icon on Oct. 17, 1936, in Grand Island to Reinhardt and Paula (Scherzberg) Quandt. He attended District 56 School and Trinity Lutheran School. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1955. He worked on the family farm north of Grand Island from 1955 until 1959.

He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, Texas, from July 1, 1959, to May 3, 1961. After the service, he returned to Grand Island and worked on the family farm.

He married Dianne Bockman on Oct. 27, 1963, in Grand Island. Mr. Quandt worked at Chief Industries fabrication division from 1966 until the time of his death.

His hobbies included gardening, watching sports and car racing. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Platt-Duetsche.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cindy (Mrs. John) Gillespie and Chris (Mrs. Jeff) Reed, both of Grand Island; one son, Randy Quandt of Grand Island; three grandchildren; one stepgrandson; three brothers, Ronald Quandt of Grand Island, Harold Quandt of Aurora, Colo., and William "Bill" Quandt of Orange, Colo.; and three sisters, Anita (Mrs. George) Oliver of Grand Island, Marlene (Mrs. Albert) Pollock of Las Cruces, N.M., and Pauline (Mrs. Larry) Sallinger of Orange, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Venetta Rittenhouse

Venetta J. Rittenhouse, 72, of Grand Island died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Rittenhouse was born icon on Nov. 11, 1927, in Atkinson to Gilbert "Pete" and Lucy (Cunningham) Cheyney. She was educated and grew up in the Clay Center, Chapman and O'Neill areas. She worked at Rainbow Baking Co. for six years.

She married Willis Rittenhouse on Dec. 30, 1953, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island, where she helped her husband bake wedding and special-occasion cakes. Mr. Rittenhouse died on May 15, 1978.

Mrs. Rittenhouse was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island and also attended Good Samaritan Church in Hastings. She enjoyed playing bingo and reading Harlequin romance novels.

Survivors include two sons, David and Todd Rittenhouse, both of Grand Island; two daughters, Stephanie (Mrs. Fred) Hongsermeier of Grand Island and Roxanne (Mrs. Leroy) Ceplecha of Chapman; seven grandchildren; a sister, Volia Klabus of Mount Holly, N.J.; and two half sisters, Mevis Lavonne Cook of Lincoln and Wila Joyce Schroeder of LaVista.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Cheyney, Marvin Roy Cheyney and an infant brother; and an infant sister.

William Hickman

BROKEN BOW -- William Wesley Hickman, 88, of Broken Bow, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Fred Roedger will officiate with Masonic Rites by Custer Lodge No. 148 A.F. and A.M.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Mountain time in the Mitchell Cemetery with Masonic Rites by Mitchell Lodge No. 148, A.F. and A.M.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the Mitchell Lodge No. 263 A.F. and A.M., Custer Lodge No. 148 A.F. and A.M. of Broken Bow or the First Presbyterian Church of Broken Bow.

Mr. Hickman was born icon May 24, 1911, at Lillian to Fred W. and Della E. (Turnbull) Hickman. He attended country school and Broken Bow schools and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1929.

On Dec. 12, 1936, he married Lulu G. Ready in Cheyenne, Wyo. Mrs. Hickman died April 16, 1987.

After taking an accounting course he worked as an accountant for Ehrman-Dickson Chevrolet and Faulkner Chevrolet in Lyman and Mitchell. He was credit manager for Knox Chevrolet in Cheyenne, Wyo., until returning to Faulkner Chevrolet in Mitchell in 1937.

In 1941, he went to work for Pathfinder Irrigation District as an accountant. In November, 1945, he started an insurance agency and with Paul Williams formed Hickman-Williams Agency and added a finance company to the insurance and real estate business.

In April 1961, he went to work for the First National Bank as assistant cashier, later was cashier and then vice president. He retired on Dec. 31, 1975. After the change in ownership in August 1976, he returned to the bank as president and director. He retired June 30, 1977. He worked part-time as an appraiser for Tecumsey Building and Loan Association for five years.

On March 11, 1989, he married Ellen Burman in Broken Bow. They moved to Broken Bow in 1994.

He was a past secretary and Master of the Mitchell Lodge No. 263 A.F. and A.M., and a member of Scottsbluff Lodge No. 1367, B.P.O. Elks, the Sunflower Chapter No. 214 O.E.S. and Presbyterian Church in Morrill. He was a former member of Covenant Lodge No. 259 I.O.O.F. and American Society of Appraisers.

He was past secretary and president of the Mitchell Community Club, past secretary and president of the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Mitchell School Board, was elected four times and served three terms as mayor, was past president of the Scottsbluff Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers and was past chairman of the Mitchell Housing Authority.

Survivors include his wife; one son, William of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one brother, Chester of Sidney; and one sister, Carol (Mrs. Mike) Klingbeil of Broken Bow.

Carl Linden

BROKEN BOW -- Carl A. Linden, 81, of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Nathan Dahlke

Wyatt Dahlke

COLUMBUS -- Twin sons of Monte A. and Jill J. (Paustian) Dahlke of Columbus were born icon Jan. 31, 2000, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Nathan John Dahlke died shortly after birth on Jan. 31, 2000, in Omaha.

Graveside services were Feb. 4 at the Columbus Cemetery.

Wyatt Alan died Feb. 8, 2000, in Omaha.

A chapel service was Monday at the Gass-Haney Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Mark Lindloff will officiate. Burial was in the Columbus Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus.

In addition to their parents, they are survived by grandparents, Ron and Peggy Dahlke of Central City and Tony and Marilyn Paustian of Grand Island.

Alma Schamber

ONTARIO, Ore. -- Alma Clara Schamber, 82, of Ontario, Ore., died Feb. 1, 2000, in Oregon.

Services were Feb. 4 at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Ontario. The Rev. Fred Schuett officiated. Graveside services were at Rosedale Memorial Gardens in Payette, Ore. Haren-Wood Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Pilgrim Lutheran Church or the Pathway Hospice, both of Ontario, Ore.

Mrs. Schamber was born icon Nov. 10, 1917, in Shelton to Henry and Emma Moss. She grew up on the family farm. She worked at various jobs in Nebraska and Wyoming.

She married Harold Schamber on Nov. 16, 1943, while he was in the U.S. Army. They moved to Tacoma, Wash. and later to San Diego, Calif. where he was discharged in 1945.

They started farming in Nebraska, later moving to Idaho. They spent 23 years farming on the Oregon Slope.

They retired in 1980 and moved to Ontario, Ore. Mr. Schamber died in June 1998.

She enjoyed helping with the dairy and canning fruits and vegetables. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet (Mrs. Ray) Hewitt of Corvallis, Ore., Roselyn (Mrs. Jim) Clegg of Enterprise, Ore. and Nellene (Mrs. Lyn) House of Middleton, Idaho; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Erma Quaring of Nebraska.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Selma Chizek and six brothers, John, Henry, William, Paul, Charles and Ernest Moss.

Donald Smeall Sr.

OLATHE, Kan. -- Donald Smeall Sr., 51, of Olathe, Kan., formerly of Wood River, died Feb. 9, 2000, at his home.

Services were on Saturday at Frye and Son Funeral Home in Olathe. Burial was in the Olathe Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to Canine Companions.

Mr. Smeall was born icon on Jan. 17, 1949, in Grand Island. He graduated from Wood River High School. He served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1969 to 1971 and later graduated from Electronics Institute in Kansas City.

He married Janice Trammell in 1971 in Olathe. He had worked as an electronics technician for King Radio.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wood River and the Lenexa Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed spending time with his dog, Urich.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Donald D. Smeall Jr. of Gardener, Kan.; a daughter, Dawn Michelle Saville of Fairfax, Va.; two grandchildren; his mother and stepfather, Loretta Viola and Norman Lee Whitten Sr. of Grand Island; four brothers, Bill Smeall of Bellingham, Wash., Ron Smeall of Tacoma, Wash., Norman Lee Whitten Jr. of Grand Island and Francis Smeall of Omaha; and three sisters, Dorthea Fairbanks of Pierce, Joyce Hargons of Grand Island and Diana Kepford of Bellevue.
