Dorothy Louise (Martin) Schultz of Chadron, formerly of Gresham, died Sunday, June 7, at her home in Chadron. She was 75.

Roy Schnell, 90, of Rapid City, S.D. died Friday, May 29 at the Ft. Meade V. A. Medical Center.'¨Funeral services were June 5 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Kathy Monson Lutes officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard, was at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Florence Fisher of Chadron died Jan. 10 at Crestview Care Center. She was 86.

Vivian Ann Boyd

A memorial service for Vivian Ann Boyd of Chadron was held Saturday, June 6, at Chamberlain Chapel with Dr. Russ Seger officiating, with a reception following at the American Legion Hall. Her remains will be interred with those of her late husband at the National Cemetery of the Pacific (“Punchbowl” in Honolulu.

Larry Dean Bertsch

Larry D. Bertsch died May 29, 2009, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron at the age of 67.

Kathleen Hawk Norman, age 54, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday April 15, 2009.

Shirley M. Kaiser

Shirley Mae Kaiser went to her eternal rest June 2, 2009 to be reunited with her waiting husband Red. Shirley was born August 10, 1922 the daughter of James and Alice (Camp) Moore in North Fond Du Lac, Wisc. Shirley married Harold Kaiser July 23, 1943. They enjoyed fifty-one happy years together living both in Fond du Lac Wisc., and Chadron. Shirley owned a ceramic shop and volunteered at the Chadron Public Library, was a member of Lady Elks and Eastern Star of Chadron.

Larry D. Bertsch

Larry D. Bertsch of Chadron passed away on Friday, May 29 at Crestview Care Center in Chadron. He was 67.

Luisa W. Strong

Luisa W. Strong, 94, of Rushville, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs. Luisa was born June 30, 1914 to Lydia and B.J. Petersen of Rushville, and was the fifth child of eight. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and later transferred membership to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church on June 10, 1936 Louisa married Ralph Strong of Rushville and started a marriage that would last 54 years before Ralph passed away.

Wanda M. Turbiville

Wanda M. Turbiville, 81, of Belle Fourche, formerly of Newell, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Cora Britton Leetch

Cora Britton Leetch, 92, passed away May 22 at the Chadron Community hospital with family at her side.

Dan Mohr, 92, died Monday morning at Pioneer Manor in hay Springs.

Lloyd A. Softley, Jr., 77, of Alliance, died May 16, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Frances C. Connelly
March 6, 1918 - May 1, 2002

Services for Frances Connelly of Harrison will be hosted privately at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Omaha. Mrs. Connelly died at Hemingford Care Center in Hemingford on May 1. She was 84 years old. Mrs. Connelly was born March 6, 1918 in Omaha to Cecil B. Magnuson and Mildred K. (Schommer) Magnuson.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Sandra J. Jasa. She is survived by her husband, Romanus John Connelly; brother, Reverend Richard Magnuson of Canada; son, James J. Connelly of Omaha and three grandchildren.

Richard Joseph Starman
Oct. 7, 1930 - May 1, 2002

Funeral services for Richard Joseph Starman of Chadron was Monday, May 6 at 1 p.m. at Chamberlain Chapel with Rev. Rod Smith officiating. Burial will be at Saint Michael’s Cemetery in Albion. Mr. Starman died May 1 at Hemingford Community Care Center. He was 71. A memorial has been established for Area 1 OHD. Military services were provided by the Veteran’s Honor Guard. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, 69337.

Mr. Starman was born Oct. 7, 1930 in Petersburg to Joseph and Clara (Wiegand) Starman. He was preceded in death by his parents. His survivors include his brother, Jerome Starman of Alliance.

Marcella Marie McNeill Luther
July 9, 1917 - April 30, 2002

Marcella Marie McNeill Luther, 84, died April 30 in Fountain of the Sun, Mesa, Ariz. Arrangements were handled by the Bunker Family Funeral home. Mrs. Luther will be buried in The Grove Cemetery in Indianola. Mrs. Luther was born July 9, 1917 in Indianola to Alta Helm and John McNeill. Her early education was made possible by the use of a pony car that she and her siblings used to go from their farm to Indianola schools. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1935.

Rural elementary schools employed Mrs. Luther right out of high school. She taught in one room schools from Kansas to the Wyoming border. Using this income she was able to attend Chadron State College during the summers. It was in Chadron in 1936 that she met her husband, Clayton. They were married Aug. 18, 1940 by the local Methodist minister. Two sons were born to the union, John C. and David I. Luther. After the children were older, Mrs. Luther enrolled in Eastern Michigan University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. With this degree she was certified to teach in Michigan schools. She taught and substituted in Novi, Mich., until she decided to concentrate on raising her two sons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister. She is survived by her husband, Clayton; son, John; son, David Luther; stepchild, Scott; stepchild, Laura Reaver; sister, Lois; brother-in-law, John Sines of McCook; daughters-in-law, Carolyn and Yvonne Luther; several nieces and nephews, three grandchildren and “Dog.”

Eva B. Galey
Nov. 16, 1909 - May 3, 2002

Funeral services for Eva B Galey, 92, were this morning (Wednesday, May 8) at the United Methodist Church in Whitney. Mrs. Galey was a long-time resident of Dawes County. She died Friday, May 3 at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford where she had been a resident since 1988. Mrs. Galey was born Nov. 17, 1909 in Perry, Iowa to Rayburn and Margaret (Thompson) Cunningham. The family lived in the Glitner area for several years before moving to Whitney in the 1920s.

Mrs. Galey graduated from Whitney High School in 1927. After attending the old Nebraska State Normal College at Chadron to earn her teaching certificate, she began her career in education. She taught school in Whitney for three years and later at District No. 49. She met Thomas Galey in 1932 and they were married Nov. 25, 1933 in Rushville. They raised six children. Tom died in 1958. Mrs. Galey and family continued to live on the farm east of Whitney. She had a passion for education and returned to Chadron State COllege to renew her teaching certificate in 1962. She taught at rural schools in Dawes and Sheridan counties until her retirement in 1978. She loved teaching and many of her students visited after she retired.

Mrs. Galey is survived by her sister, Doris Gustavson of California; sons, Thomas and wife Dorothy of Lubbock, Texas, Robert and wife Naomi of Whitney, Gary and wife Zoleta of Crawford; daughters, Margaret of Chadron, Karen and husband Larry Miller of Hummelstown, Penn., and daughter-in-law Kay (Mann) Galey of Chadron; 18 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rayburn and Margaret Cunningham; husband Tom and son Bernard; sisters Geraldine Kritenbrink, Lois Thompson, Elma Cunningham, Elva Mosher and Vera Cunningham and brothers Rayburn and Richard Cunningham. Memorials may be sent to the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford.

Donald Macumber, Jr.

Funeral services for Donald Macumber, Jr., 43 of Gordon, will be Thursday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Gordon with Pastor Scott Shields officiating. Mr. Macumber died May 3 at his home. A memorial has been established for the family, donations may be sent to 220 Grant St. Gordon, NE, 69343.

Mr. Macumber lived in the Gordon area all his life. He worked for Deen and Russell Johnson for the past 17 years. He was also a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Donna and his sons, Kirk and Trevor.

Virgil E. Couch
May 23, 1908 - May 2, 2002

Funeral services for Virgil E. Couch of Crawford will be Tuesday May 7 at 10 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Crawford with Rev. Tim Pratt officiating. Burial will be at Whitney Cemetery. Mr. Couch died May 2 at Chadron Community Hospital. He was 83. A memorial has been established for Virgil Couch Children’s Christmas Project. Donations may be sent in care of RSVP Box 521 Crawford, 69339.

He was born May 23, 1908 in Royal to Samuel Edgar Couch and Mary (Ingram) Couch. His father worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and the family moved to Whitney in 1920. He played basketball for Whitney High School. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln for a short time before going to Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. Back in Whitney, he installed Delco light plants and wired many of the houses for electricity. Mr. Couch married Emilie Gobel on July 28, 1932. Two children were born from this union, John and Jeanette. He operated the Red Cloud Refinery in Whitney and worked part-time for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. In 1941, Mr. Couch became a permanent track foreman with the CN&W and worked in Powder River, Wyo.; Sturgis, S.D.; Wayside; Whitney; Gordon and Crawford. He retired from the railroad in 1971. Over the years he built a home and barn on the farm using Prisoner of War buildings that he moved from Fort Robinson after WWII. He loved traveling, fishing, hunting and remodeling homes. After retirement, Mr. Couch became one of the first male volunteers with the RSVP program in Crawford and accumulated more than 18,000 hours of service. In the 1970’s, he began repairing broken toys for children at Christmas. Along with the assistance of his wife and other volunteers, the project has assisted more than 2,000 children and their families. He has received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award, honored as an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy and recognized by the Area Agency on Aging for his years of representing the elderly in the Panhandle.

Mr. Couch was preceded in death by his parents and son John in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Emilie Couch of Crawford; daughter, Jeanette Potloff and husband, Gene of San Mateo, Calif; daughter-in-law, Lynda Couch of San Francisco, Calif.; sister, Katie Hetrick of Chadron; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
