Margaret DeVany

BURWELL -- Margaret G. DeVany, 86, of Burwell died June 21, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

She was cremated.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Parkview Plaza recreation room in Burwell. The Rev. David Stipp will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens at Cheyenne, Wyo.

Memorials are suggested to the hospital or Burwell Parkview Plaza.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. DeVany was born icon on Sept. 28, 1912, to Samuel A. Sr. and Emma K. (Wetzel) Gailey. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg, Pa., and Zeth Secretarial Business School in Altoona, Pa.

She married George D. DeVany on Aug. 8, 1948, in Williamsburg. The couple moved to Cheyenne. She worked as an administrative assistant for the Wyoming Public Service Commission.

The couple retired in September 1973 and moved to Roswell, N.M. After her husband's death on June 10, 1980, she continued to live in Roswell until recently moving to Burwell. She had lived at Parkview Plaza in Burwell for nearly one year.

Survivors include two brothers, James of Wilmington, N.C., and Sam of Ord.

'Bud' Pauley Jr.

HASTINGS -- William G. "Bud" Pauley Jr., 72, of Hastings died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sam Rathod will officiate. Private family burial will precede the church services.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Jerry Pauley Scholarship Fund in care of Hastings College.

Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pauley was born icon on April 28, 1927, in Hastings to William "Bill" Sr. and Bessie (Cattle) Pauley. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1946 and Hastings College in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Glenda McManigal on Dec. 28, 1950. He was president of Pauley Lumber Co. and was involved in 27 businesses. He had been a pilot for 50 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lochland Country Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, chamber of commerce, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Hastings Lodge 50 A.F. and A.M. He had been a member of the Skyriders and Optimists.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Rhonda Pauley and Reneé Pauley, both of Hastings; two sons, William George Pauley III and Thomas R. Pauley, both of Hastings; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Harriet Callahan of Palm Coast, Fla., Mary Guenin of Latrobe, Pa., and Margaret Brown of Fullerton; and one brother, Robert Pauley of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Pauley; and a sister, Jay Kelly.

Inez Prince

ST. PAUL -- Inez Prince, 90, of St. Paul died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Howard County Community Hospital.

Services are pending at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Betty Swanson

OSCEOLA -- Betty Jeane Swanson, 75, of Polk County died June 21, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services were on June 24 at the United Methodist Church in Osceola. The Rev. Robert Berlie officiated. Burial was in the Osceola Cemetery.

Mrs. Swanson was born icon on Oct. 26, 1923, at her grandparents' home in Polk County to Clifford and Florence (Willits) Johnston. She grew up on various farms in Polk County as well as in Stromsburg. She graduated from High Prairie High School west of Stromsburg in 1941.

She attended college part time for many years while she taught school. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964. She taught elementary school for 27 years, first in country schools and then in Panama, Hickman, Waverly and Clarks.

She married Theodore W. Swanson on March 8, 1945, at Swedehome. They lived on several farms in Polk County during the first part of their marriage. They moved often after her husband quit farming and started working in road construction. The last 30 years of their marriage were spent on a farm near her birthplace, where she cared for her parents.

She enjoyed playing piano, fishing, water skiing and picnics with her family. She also started a Willits family reunion 50 years ago and was secretary for many years.

She was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church and was active with the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband and one brother, Larry Johnston of Shelbyville, Texas.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley and Verlie Johnston.

Elvin Wheeler

LOUP CITY -- Elvin R. Wheeler, 79, of Loup City died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at Loup City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church, Rose Lane Home or the donor's choice.

Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wheeler was born icon on Jan. 29, 1920, on a farm north of Orleans to Loren and Eunice (Dearson) Wheeler. He attended the Orleans School and graduated from Potter High School in 1939. Upon completing his education, he worked in farming.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific theater in Australia and New Guinea.

He married Kathryn M. Legg on July 3, 1945, at Gainsville, Texas. The couple lived in Gainsville and Mineral Wells, Texas, while he served in the Army. Upon his discharge from the service, the couple moved to Oklahoma City, where he worked in construction. The family moved to Nebraska in 1946 and lived in Potter, Alma and Bucktail. They moved to a farm south of Loup City in 1952.

The couple retired in 1990 and moved into Loup City. Mrs. Wheeler died on Dec. 9, 1997. Mr. Wheeler moved to the Rose Lane Home in February 1999.

He enjoyed gardening.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Loup City. He was a former 4-H leader and former member of the Loup City Saddle Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet (Mrs. Frank) Kaslon of Como, Texas; four sons, Stephen and Allen Wheeler, both of Holdrege, Rex Wheeler of Lewellen and James Wheeler of Loup City; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Eugene Wheeler of Potter.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin and Leonard Wheeler; and one sister, Opal Winn.

Harold Robinson

COLUMBUS -- Harold J. Robinson, 61, of Columbus, formerly of Belgrade, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. The Rev. Timothy W. White will officiate. Burial will be at noon in the Belgrade Main Cemetery with military rites by Belgrade Legion No. 99.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mr. Robinson was born icon on May 17, 1938, in rural Nance County to Arnold and Mildred (Oakley) Robinson. He attended rural schools in Nance County and graduated from Belgrade High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959.

He married Phyllis Demuth on July 2, 1960, in Cedar Rapids. They lived on a farm in rural Nance County. He farmed until 1969, when they moved to Columbus. He worked at Tran-Tec Corp. in Columbus.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Kenneth of San Antonio; three daughters, Kay (Mrs. Joe) Arlt and Kris (Mrs. Scott) Greenlee, both of Columbus, and Keri (Mrs. Christopher) Robbins of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Ron of Sheldon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eugene.

Mark Sheagley

ESTES PARK, Colo. -- Mark E. Sheagley, 56, of Estes Park, Colo., died Tuesday, July 6, 1999.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel at LaSalle in LaSalle, Colo.

Memorials are suggested to the Chapel at LaSalle and the West African Center for Ministerial Studies.

Mr. Sheagley was born icon on Jan. 21, 1943. He grew up in Indiana and Nebraska.

He married Connie J. Hartmann on June 23, 1962, in Wood River. They moved to Estes Park, Colo., in 1980. The Sheagleys owned and operated the Montgomery Ward store in Estes Park until 1985. He then established an appliance repair business, which he developed into Estes Park Garage Door and Appliance Repair. He still operated the business at the time of his death.

The Sheagleys established the Chapel at LaSalle in LaSalle, Colo. He took an active leadership role in the church's ministries. In the summer of 1998, Mr. Sheagley traveled to Ghana in West Africa, where he was involved in missions work.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lisa (Mrs. Marc) Haynes of Longmont, Colo., and Shannon (Mrs. Daniel) Brown of Estes Park; three grandchildren; his mother, Fay H. Sheagley of Hastings; a sister, MaryAnn (Mrs. William) Weber of Kearney; and a brother, Andrew Sheagley of Caņon City, Colo.

Vivian Anderson

STROMSBURG -- Vivian Marie Christina Anderson, 88, of Stromsburg died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Bob Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Frances Benisek

HASTINGS -- Frances Benisek, 93, of Hastings, formerly of Ravenna, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Tomasita Kern

WOOD RIVER -- Tomasita Kern, 66, of Wood River died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at her home in Wood River.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Minden City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River, with a 7 p.m. rosary. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Diabetes Foundation.

Mrs. Kern was born icon January 29, 1933, to Esteban and Lourdes (Juary) Herrera at Hastings. She grew up in Hastings and attended school there.

She married Andrew Kern Jr. on Jan. 24, 1963, at Minden. The couple moved to Gibbon, where they lived during their married life. She worked at Baldwin Filters in Kearney. She moved to Wood River in 1993 after her father's death.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River.

Survivors include three sons, Richard of Gibbon, Thomas of Omaha and James of Ravenna; one daughter, Anna Campos of Gibbon; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Esteban Herrera Jr. of Wood River; and one sister, Carmen Santos of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her husband.
