M. Charlene Calvin
GREELEY, Colo. -- M. Charlene Calvin, 72, of Greeley, Colo., formerly of Ord, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at the Northern Colorado Hospital Hospice Center.
Mrs. Calvin was cremated.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Ord City Cemetery. Dr. Bernard Keown and the Rev. David Stipp will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Northern Colorado.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Calvin was born
March 26, 1927, to Charles and Eleanor Wiswell at Omaha. She attended schools in Gresham and transferred to St. Paul High School where she graduated with the class of 1944. Following graduation, she worked in the offices of Dobry and Dobry in St. Paul.
She married Wilbert J. Calvin on Sept. 2, 1944, at Belleville, Kan. She was a graduate of cosmetology school and owned and operated a salon in Ord. In 1981, she accepted a position with KMS Research Lab and later purchased the franchise from Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa.
In 1983, she and her husband moved to Phoenix until 1999 when the couple moved to Greeley to be near their family.
She was a volunteer for Mesa Community College and was a member of the All Faith Community Church in Phoenix.
Survivors include her husband; one son, David Calvin of Greeley; one daughter, Kathleen Anderson of Boulder; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Russell Goins
Russell L. Goins, 85, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church's Gollaher Chapel. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Goins was born
Jan. 29, 1914, to Leslie and Maggie (Smith) Goins at Fairfax, Mo. He grew up on a farm near Fairfax and attended Northwest Missouri Public Schools.
He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s and was sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kan. for initial training. He then was sent to Eureka, Calif., where he spent two-and-a-half years working for the National Park Service.
After returning from California, he worked for Earl May Seed and Nursery in Shenandoah, Iowa. While living in Shenandoah, he sang and played on the radio with his band, "Missouri Tunesmiths." He moved to Grand Island to work for Cornhusker Ordnance Plant during the early years of World War II until it ended. He then worked for Fairmont Foods Co. in 1945, working there for 10 years.
He married Alma "Peggy" (Jerome) Tegler on Aug. 6, 1949. The couple purchased the Diner Cafe in 1955 and operated the restaurant for 20 years, and then retired.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Eagles No. 378 and Platt-Duetsche.
He enjoying fishing and traveled to the Northwestern Territories and several Canadian provinces to fish. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening and his dog, Maggie.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Patricia "Pat" Miller and Lucinda "Cindy" Paustian, both of Grand Island, Rucel "Rusty" Barth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Sharon Brown Molander of Batavia, Ill.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mary Goins of St. Joseph, Mo. and Juanita Lamb of Little Rock, Ark.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
DeLysle Jeffres
DeLysle "Jeff" Jeffres, 76, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia with military rites by Reuben Beck American Legion Post No. 150 in Scotia.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church in Scotia.
Mr. Jeffres was born
March 20, 1923, at Horace to Floyd and Wilhelmina (Beck) Jeffres. He attended grade school in Greeley, then Scotia High School, where he graduated in 1941.
He married Mavis Schudel on Sept. 27, 1942, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Scotia, then moved to her father's farm near North Loup, where they worked for her father.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving in Guam. He was discharged in 1946.
They continued to farm near North Loup for six years, then moved to Iowa for one year, then to Scotia and Central City for four years. They also lived in Corvallis, Ore. for a short time before moving back to Scotia in 1958.
Much of his life was spent in sales work, selling cars, fertilizer and feed. He sold cars for Clayton Peterson in St. Paul for 11 years. He worked the remaining years in Scotia at the elevator, service station and as a sheriff's deputy. They moved to Grand Island in 1989 after retiring.
He was a member of United Methodist Church in Scotia and Reuben Beck American Legion Post in Scotia.
He enjoyed working with Black Angus cattle and horses.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Jim of Ogallala; five daughters, Sheila Loescher, Janie (Mrs. Gary) Worrell, Vicki Buckman and Kimberly (Mrs. Terry) Aldrich, all of Grand Island and Lori (Mrs. Steve) Lewis of St. Libory; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Don "Mick" Jeffres of Burwell; four sisters, Darlene Brinkley of Wood River, Corrine Kesterson and Caroljean Samway, both of Grand Island and Gail (Mrs. Floyd) Wilson of Elba.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda Lee.
Marvin Ripp
Marvin L. Ripp, 87, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 25,1999 at the Nebraska Veterans Home.
Livingston-Sondermann funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Elsie Rodekohr
Elsie E. Rodekohr, 88, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Richard Bacon will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Rodekohr was born
on Oct. 24, 1910, at Blue Rapids, Kan., to Phillip and Alice (Reedy) VanHoutan. They moved to Madison, S.D., when she was 6. She grew up and was educated there. She returned to Kansas at the age of 20.
She married Charles H. Joseph on Nov. 24, 1934. He died on Nov. 21, 1947.
She married Edward W. Rodekohr on April 5, 1958, at Central City. She was a cook at the Ace Cafe in Chapman and retired in 1968. Mr. Rodekohr died on March 12, 1983. Mrs. Rodekohr moved to an apartment in Grand Island in 1991 and to the Grand Island Veterans Home in 1996.
Mrs. Rodekohr was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed flowers and painting.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty P. (Mrs. Paul) Brooks of Chapman, Thelma E. (Mrs. Harold) Padget of Blue Rapids and Patricia A. (Mrs. Don) Skinner Yonker of Phillips; one son, Phillip L. Joseph of Blue Rapids; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Phillip VanHoutan of Hamilton, Mont., James Albert VanHoutan of Florence, Colo., and Luther E. VanHoutan of Alamogordo, N.M.
Other than her two husbands, she was preceded in death by one grandson, three sisters and four brothers.
Hazel Burmood
VERDIGRE -- Hazel E. Burmood, 86, of Verdigre, formerly of Wood River, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999 at Alpine Village Nursing Home in Verdigre.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. John McKinley will officiate. Burial will be in Wood River Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Burmood was born
June 8, 1913, to Christian and Daisy (Hayes) Otto at Prosser. She attended school in Grand Island, and did domestic work in Grand Island after graduation.
She married Donald Burmood on Aug. 16, 1935, at Wood River. They lived in Wood River, Ovid, Colo. and Grant. They moved to Loup City in 1948, then to northeast Nebraska in 1986. She spent the past few years in Verdigre. Mr. Burmood died in 1992.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and several extension and garden clubs.
Survivors include three sons, Philip of Long Beach, Calif., Paul of Niobrara and Daniel of Fountain Valley, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two brothers, Basil Otto of Beatrice and Rex Otto of Grand Island.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie Thomas and Mildred Powell.
La Ora Govier
BROKEN BOW -- La Ora Govier, 72, of Broken Bow died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Dr. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Baptist Women.
Mrs. Govier was born
Aug. 7, 1927, to Seba and Neva (Lyon) Phillips at Sargent. She attended school at Gates from kindergarten through eighth grade, then attended Sargent schools through eleventh grade and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1946.
She married George T. Govier on May 23, 1946, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Broken Bow. After their children were raised, she worked at J.C. Penney's, IGA, Broken Bow Elks Lodge and Fashion Crossroads.
She attended First Baptist Church in Broken Bow, was active in American Baptist Women and was a member of the Birthday Club.
She enjoyed Nebraska football, gardening and embroidery.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Ted of Ansley, Jack of Lexington, Tom of Riverton, Wyo., and Joe of Broken Bow; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; four step-great-grandchildren and two brothers, Lowell and Roberts Phillips, both of Spokane, Wash.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard and one sister, Nora.
Frieda Jacobs
ST. PAUL -- Frieda Jacobs, 91, died Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services are pending with Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Frank Kurek
SILVER CREEK -- Frank Kurek, 77, of Silver Creek died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Lawrence Church in Silver Creek. The Rev. Dave Korth will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Cemetery in Omaha.
Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Monday at the church and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Lawrence.
McKown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kurek was born
Aug. 23, 1922, to Andrew and Anna (Konwinski) Kurek at Fullerton. He attended country school and Krakow school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a military policeman.
He married Elaine Zywiec on May 6, 1950, at St. John Berchman's in Chicago. They lived in Chicago, Columbus, Omaha and Silver Creek. He worked for the mill departments in a building supply company.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, his pet dog and carpentry.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Omaha.
Survivors include two sisters, Helen Borowiak of Genoa and Clementine (Mrs. Ralph) Chalupka of Schaumburg, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his wife; four sisters, Lucille Govern, Victoria Gunchick, Dora Para and Leona Shotkoski; and two brothers, Edward Kurek and Lawrence Kurek.
